A Simple Formula for Success, in Sports, in Life It’s all about respect. Respect for the sport. Respect for the student-athlete. Respect for the university they represent, and the community in which they live. It’s a very big picture approach to track and field at Northwestern State. The NSU track and field coaching staff is anchored by one of the icons of collegiate track, Demon head coach Leon Johnson, a man legendary among his peers and beloved by his colleagues and athletes. It’s a family atmosphere, with everybody getting equal billing and pulling equal weight. The coaching team compiles of some of the brightest young coaches anywhere to provide NSU’s athletes with the finest technical knowledge presented in a nurturing, positive teaching environment. It’s about respect, after all. And continually striving to be better than you were yesterday, as an athlete, as a student, as a person.

The oldest institution in the University of Louisiana System, Northwestern State University has a long tradition of academic excellence in a student-centered environment. Founded in 1884 as the State Normal School, Northwestern was originally dedicated to the education of teachers. Northwestern gradually added programs in nursing, business, liberal arts, the sciences and graduate programs. Today, NSU offers more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Northwestern has nationally-recognized programs in computer information systems, creative and performing arts, nursing, educational technology and industrial technology. The university has put an emphasis on incorporating technology in the classroom, working to provide students with cutting-edge technology that is applicable to the workplace. Northwestern is also home to the Louisiana Scholars’ College, the state’s designated honors program in the arts and sciences. The university is also preparing for changes in higher education by aggressively seeking new ways to deliver to courses to students. Northwestern has taken a leadership role in electronic delivery of classes as students are taking classes via the Internet, compressed video or desktop video. Eighteen degree programs are available completely online. Enrollment at Northwestern is more than 9,000 students. The university has more than 70,000 alumni in all 50 states and 12 countries. Students come primarily from Louisiana. Located in Natchitoches, the oldest settlement in the Louisiana Purchase, the university and community value history. Part of the university is entered in the National Register of Historic Places. The university is home to the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, a unit of the National Park Service dedicated to promoting and enhancing the preservation and conservation of prehistoric and historic resources in the United States. Northwestern seeks to provide a well-rounded education for its students, allowing them to take part in a variety of extracurricular activities. Doug Ireland
Assistant AD/Sports Information Director In charge of athletic media relations at his alma mater since January of 1989, Doug Ireland coordinates publicity efforts for Northwestern’s 14 intercollegiate sports teams through local, regional and national media outlets in print, broadcast, television and the internet. He also serves in the volunteer role of chairman of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. Ireland assumed that post in April 1991. His 1992 Demon Football Media Guide won “Best in the Nation” in FCS Division from the College Sports Information Directors of America. A 1997 story on Joe Delaney, “The Guy We Called Joe D,” won a national second-place award in a COSIDA writing contest. Ireland has won numerous awards as SID from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. He was recently awarded the Distinguished American Award” by the S.M. McNaughton Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. Several of his assistant SIDs and graduate assistants have advanced to prominence in media fields. Former NSU sports information staffers under Ireland include Bruce Ludlow, assistant commissioner of the Southland Conference for media relations; Bill Magrath, media relations manager for the Sports Business Daily; Mike Morrison, co-editor of the ESPN Information Please Almanac; Daucy Crizer, assistant AD and business manager at Lamar; Erik Cox, SID at Lamar; Dart Volz, former SID at Southeastern Louisiana; Melissa Reynaud, former assistant SID at LSU; Kenny Lannou, SID at Kansas State; and Troy Mitchell, SID at Henderson State. Dustin Eubanks, NSU’s director of NCAA compliance, worked in the NSU SID office as a graduate assistant and for two years as the fulltime assistant. And Adam Jonson, NSU’s former ticket manager, was a student and graduate assistant in the SID office. In 1981-82, while an undergraduate at Northwestern, Ireland worked as chief of the Shreveport Times Natchitoches Bureau, coordinating news coverage of an eight-parish region along the Red River. From 1982-85, he was assistant SID at Southwestern Louisiana, working with a men’s basketball program that made three straight postseason tournament appearances. He won CoSIDA publications and writing awards while at USL. Ireland was the sports editor of the Natchitoches Times in 1985-86 and attended graduate school at Northeast Louisiana before joining the Alexandria Town Talk sports staff in 1987. In 18 months at the Town Talk, he covered both NSU and LSU sports and won 15 writing awards from the Louisiana Sports Writers’ Association. In 2001, the LSWA presented its prestigious Mac Russo Award to Ireland for his contributions to the organization. In 1999, Ireland was awarded honorary membership in the Graduate N Club at NSU by the university’s group of athletic lettermen for his service to Northwestern and its athletic program, and in 2003 he was given full membership. He was appointed by President Dr. Randall Webb to serve a two-year term on the inaugural University Planning Council in 1997-99. A member of the Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and a student government senator while completing a journalism degree from Northwestern, Ireland was editor of the student newspaper “Current Sauce” as a sophomore before going to work for the Shreveport Times. He was an all-district baseball player and the student body president at Jonesboro-Hodge High School, where he was a wingback for the Tigers’ 1977 Class AA state football finalists coached by Don Shows.

Matthew Fowler
Associate SID/Baseball Contact
Matthew Bonnette is in his ninth season as a member of the NSU sports information staff serving as the associate SID. Bonnette joined the staff in August 2003 after spending a year as sports information director at Henderson State (Ark.) and for former NSU legendary coach Sam Goodwin. Bonnette surpervises all layouts and design work for all media guides and game programs and is the primary media contact for the NSU baseball and women’s basketball teams while overseeing soccer and volleyball. He also coordinates statistics for all sports. A 2002 graduate of McNeese State University, Bonnette is no stranger to the SID field as he is the son of longtime McNeese SID Louis Bonnette, who is a member of the CoSIDA Hall of Fame, Southland Conference Hall of Honor, Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, and the McNeese State Athletic Hall of Fame. Matthew’s older brother, Michael, is the sports information director at LSU. While at McNeese, Bonnette served two years as the sports editor of the school’s newspaper. He also worked as both a volunteer and student sports information director while being employed at KPLC-TV as the commercial production manager where he won several advertising awards for his work. He is a member of CoSIDA, Louisiana Sports Writers Association, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and the United States Basketball Writers Association. He has been a member of the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee the last four years and directed the voting for the All-Louisiana Baseball teams. His 2010 football media guide placed second and third in its respective divisions in the LSWA sports information directors contest while his baseball media guide placed second in its division. He has won 11 awards by the LSWA in his career. He is married to the former Colene Lanier of Lake Charles and the couple has two daughters, 11-year-old Haley, who is a sixth grader and a member of the NSU Middle School Dance Line, and 8-year-old Katelyn, who is in the second grade at the NSU Elementary Lab. Colene is the Northwestern State men’s basketball and women’s soccer administrative assistant.
SID Intern
Matthew Fowler is in his fifth year as a member of the NSU sports information office and and the first as a SID intern. The Homer, Louisiana native graduated this past December with a bachelor’s degree in general studies with a concentration in arts and communication. He also minored in sports management. During his time as a student assistant, Fowler assisted with the production of NSU’s award winning football, baseball, and men’s basketball media guides, as well game programs and being the primary contact for the Lady Demon soccer program. He is also the official Stat Crew scorer for football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, and soccer contests. Prior to joining the sports information staff full-time, Fowler was a member of the Spirit of Northwestern marching band as a trumpet player. In 2010, Fowler became the fourth NSU student assistant to receive the prestigious Ace Higgins Award that is presented annually by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. Fowler is also very active in campus activities including serving as President of the Baptist Christian Ministry and participating in intramural athletics. He’s also an avid golfer and enjoys playing pick-up basketball. Fowler is engaged to be married this summer to Whitney Brandon, a NSU graduate and currently a teacher at Natchitoches Central High School.

2012 brings hope and promise to nsu track & field With the venerable Leon Johnson and dynamic Mike Heimerman setting the tone, track and field followers can always count on excitement from the Northwestern State program. The 2012 season brims with promise of national qualifiers and athletes and relay teams challenging for championships. It’s impossible to consider this season without acknowledging the epic accomplishment last year, when senior Trecey Rew won the NCAA discus title, giving Northwestern State its third NCAA event championship. She is training in Natchitoches and serves as a constant inspiration point to the NSU competitors of just how close greatness is, with the combination of sharp preparation, effort and ability, along with tremendous coaching. It’s also impossible to think about 2012 without keeping the London Olympic Games in mind, and the USA Olympic Trials in Eugene, two weeks following the NCAA Championships. Rew (now, by marriage, Trecey Hoover) will make her first bid for Olympic glory, while Demons great Kenta Bell aims to make the USA team for a third straight Olympiad. Former Lady Demon Samantha Ford will take a shot in the javelin and is capable of a breakthrough throw to punch her ticket to London. NSU redshirt freshman javelin thrower Ashley Aldredge hopes to earn a trip to Eugene and get experience which could help her develop into a strong possibility for making the 2016 Olympics. For the Lady Demons, 2012 is about backing up their splendid 2011 season which culminated in a runner-up finish, the program’s best ever, at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships. For the Demons, this season’s mission is steady improvement, both as a team and individually, for a young overall squad with several proven performers capable of medal stand success in any meet they enter. COACHING There are a handful of legendary figures in college track and field, coaches whose accomplishments have stood the test of time. There’s only one active coach who has a meet named after him. That’s men’s head coach Leon Johnson, who was honored last year when Northwestern State added his name to the identity of the school’s annual signature home event – The Leon Johnson NSU Invitational. That honor testifies to the excellence and continuing passion displayed by Johnson, who has produced 48 NCAA Division I All-Americans along with Top 20 teams in his 29 previous seasons at Northwestern. One of Johnson’s stronger throwers in the mid-1990s, Mike Heimerman, has developed into a renowned throws coach, and now his overall coaching expertise is rising to the fore. Heimerman shared Louisiana women’s Coach of the Year honors with LSU stalwart Dennis Shaver last season after guiding the Lady Demons to their best-ever finish in Southland championship competition, second place, and coaching Rew to her NCAA crown. Johnson’s son, Dean, is credited by Bell with helping shape his world-class career. Dean works with NSU’s jumpers and sprinters as an assistant coach and is regarded by the sport’s experts as one of the premiere tutors in track and field. The new addition to the track and field staff is energetic Adam Malloy, whose accomplishments at this early stage of his coaching career are impressive and signal great potential to ramp up the distance corps in NSU track and field. THE LADY DEMONS Graduation was costly, with Rew and school-record hammer thrower DeJon Griffin clutching diplomas, and the NSU women also are without their two 2011 Southland medalists in the javelin, conference champion and All-American Jessica Talley (medical redshirt) and third-place Carrie Lantrip (transfer to pursue a pharmaceutics degree). But it wasn’t devastating. There’s strong depth in the weight throws with Janae Allen, Chantel Bratton, Keona Jackson and Shakemia Johnson. The addition of Aldredge Great Tradition • Brighter Future

Northwestern State Season Outlook • Season Outlook • Season Outlook to the competitive roster gives the Lady Demons a redshirt freshman who was one of the top junior throwers in the country as a prep athlete, giving NSU a strong possibility of retaining the Southland’s javelin crown. The sprint contingent is well stocked with accomplished veterans. Quiana Griffin, Angelica Kotun, Consuela Lindsay, Lawana Perkins and Constance Seibles give NSU contenders in their specialties and provide Heimerman with a formidable foundation for relay success. Griffin, Lindsay and Perkins were All-Louisiana relay honorees last year. Kotun was third in the SLC in the 200, and Seibles, the school record holder, finished fourth. Perkins will be among the 800 meter championship contenders in the Southland again, after a fifth-place finish a year ago. Karensa Ellis appears primed to threaten the school record in the 1500, while Ali Fontenot and Sarah Emory are emerging as distance stalwarts. Sarah Jones, a former volleyball player who converted to track and field last year, gives NSU potential for solid success in the jumps while Keyera Thomas is back in the high jump. THE DEMONS Standout sprinter Justin Walker had offseason knee surgery and might take a medical redshirt this season, but there are veterans who can keep the Demons high on the list of Southland contenders in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays in 2012. Trey Hatton, an All-Louisiana sprinter as a freshman, heads the list, along with fellow NCAA qualifiers Kendal Taylor and Karliss Perry (the Demons reached the national semifinals last year in the 4x100). Also fitting in the mix should be freshmen Keenan Jackson and Lawrence Jackson (no relation), along with sophomores Jarrod Charles and Dez Williams. Wayne Douglas was the Southland runner-up in the triple jump and sailed 50-8 last year with NCAA qualification. NSU will be bolstered in the long jump and triple jump by freshmen Aaron Williams and Emmanuel Williams (not related), and in the high jump, newcomer Jordan Clark. Senior P.J. Bennett was fourth at the Southland Outdoors in the 110 meter hurdles (14.46), and NSU figures to add to its scoring there with freshman Brent Giddens and sophomore Michael Barnes. Mark Dotson will contend for conference honors in the middle distance and distance events, and Nathanial McReynolds is emerging in the longer races. Freshmen D.J. Beyette and Travis Plumb are atop a group of young distance and middle-distance runners in the picture for 2012. Junior Kartemus Heary is nearing the 200-foot range in the javelin.

Leon Johnson Men’s Head Coach 30th Season
The phrase “legendary” gets tossed around too easily when discussing athletic personalities, but nobody who’s competed for, worked with, or competed against Leon Johnson would disagree that he’s approaching legendary status as a track and field coach. In his 30th season in charge of track and field at Northwestern State, he retains the same joy for coaching and teaching, the same burning competitive drive to excel and the same humble and diligent approach to every day. Those who are called “legends” in their chosen field always carry with them a passion for what they do, and they consistently achieve at a level that exceeds the grandest expectations. So it is with Johnson, whose stature is already “legendary” in Louisiana High School track and field circles, and in collegiate track and field, he’s an icon among his peers across the nation. When disagreement erupted at the 2005 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships over how to restart the rain-delayed competition in the prelims of the 200 meter dash, a room full of coaches and NCAA officials quickly turned to hear Johnson’s perspective. At Southland Conference championship events over the past 24 years, league and meet officials have always sought Johnson’s counsel on rules and administrative issues. The Louisiana High School Athletic Association has been holding its all-classifications state cross country championships at Northwestern for more than a decade, relying on Johnson and his staff for smooth management of a massive event involving thousands of competitors from every corner of the state. In January 2010, the LHSAA gave him its “Distinguished Service Award.” In each of the past three Olympic Games, one of Johnson’s athletes has competed for Team USA -- both triple jumpers, LaMark Carter in the 2000 Sydney Games and Kenta Bell in the 2004 Athens Games, and the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Last year, NSU’s biggest home meet was renamed in his honor. Texas has the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays each year, and Northwestern will always host the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational at the Walter Ledet Track Complex. The only coach or athletic staff member who has been around NSU longer became president. That would be 37-year (1913-1950) head basketball coach H. Lee Prather, for whom Prather Coliseum, NSU’s arena, is named. Johnson’s son, Dean, who has spent more than 18 seasons working under his father after competing for him at NSU, is today regarded by USA Track and Field as one of the nation’s bright horizontal jumps coaches -- a chip off the old block. Johnson also tutored Lady Demon head coach Mike Heimerman, who also competed for the Demons in the mid-1990s in the shot and discus. Heimerman has emerged as one of the country’s top young throws coaches. Speaking of All-Americans, Johnson has produced 48 in his 29 previous seasons as coach. In track and field, there’s no subjectivity -- that honor is earned by placement at the national meet, measured against every Division I competitor in the country in each event. In his fifth decade of coaching, Johnson still brings a youthful energy to each day. He is, as well, part of the heart and soul of the Northwestern athletic department. Johnson’s persona and professionalism has made him a role model to coaches and staff in every sport during the past decade. Basketball coach Mike McConathy invited Johnson along with the team on a 2006 trip to Hawaii as a token of admiration for his mentorship, friendship, selflessness and loyalty – qualities that can’t be taken for granted in today’s environment. Whether or not the word “legendary” fits him yet (and he wouldn’t accept that idea), there’s been no doubt for years that “unselfish” does, along with the description as “a team player” and a “caring colleague and coach.” He’s won a wall full of Coach of the Year honors in the longest tenure of any track coach in Northwestern sports history. Johnson has become the dean of track and field coaches at Northwestern and in the state of Louisiana. During those years, he has not only continued, but enhanced the reputation of NSU as a program that has remained remarkably competitive nationally, standing the test of time. Johnson has coached NSU to Top 20 finishes in both the indoor and outdoor NCAA Division I Championships. He has led the Demons to nine conference championships and been named conference Coach of the Year eight times. As a prep coach, he was named state Coach of the Year three times. He’s served as meet referee for the prestigious Oklahoman Daily Classic Indoor Meet and served on the NCAA Championships Throws Jury. At Northwestern, he started the Lady Demon track and field program. In 1999, Johnson was inducted in the Graduate N Club Hall of Fame in tribute to his accomplishments and dedication to NSU and its track and field program. For 16 consecutive seasons from 1989-2005, the Demons finished in the top half of the men’s team standings at the Southland Conference Outdoors. For 10 straight years, 19962005, Northwestern was the top scoring Louisiana team in the SLC men’s standings. After Johnson has shaped a tremendous recruiting classes in the last two years, the Demons are returning to form. Prior to being appointed head coach at NSU in the fall of 1982, Johnson coached at DeRidder High School. While there, he won the Louisiana Class AAA state title and was named the high school track and field coach of the year in 1982. During this stint, he twice led the Dragons to second place finishes in the state cross country competition. Before going to DeRidder, Johnson coached at Opelousas High School from 1965 until 1974 where he established a tradition of dominant track and field teams which still exists today. After being appointed as head coach in 1970, Johnson’s Opelousas teams dominated the Class AAAA state ranks like no other team in Louisiana, winning state titles in 1971 and 1972 and finishing as state runners-up in 1973 and 1974. During this time period Johnson worked with legendary coach Claude Paxton who coached 1972 Olympic gold medalist Rodney Milburn at Southern. Johnson began his career at Grand Valley (CO) High School on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains where he coached cross country, basketball and track for two years. His stay was highlighted by a fourth place finish in the state basketball tournament during his first campaign. A devotee of the sport, Johnson continues to be a source of information for many high school coaches who consult with him on an individual basis. Johnson was one of the first coaches to become Level I and Level II certified by USA Track and Field in the Sprints, Hurdles and Relays. A native of Elmore City, Oklahoma, Johnson graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana where he was a distance runner on the cross country and track teams and also went out for football. In 1971 he returned to earn his master’s in secondary education. He is married to the former Elaine Waters of Lafayette with whom he has four children: sons Dean and Kendon and daughters Darla and Molly. He is a proud grandfather, a member of the Church of Christ and a devoted volunteer for the Special Olympics and several other charities. Mike Heimerman (NSU, 1998) Women’s Head Coach • Throws 13th season
The 2011 season was spectacular for the Lady Demon track and field program, with Trecey Rew’s NCAA discus championship and the team’s best-ever finish, a runner-up showing, at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships. No surprise that Mike Heimerman was voted women’s Coach of the Year honors on the All-Louisiana Team last year, sharing the honor with LSU’s Dennis Shaver. Heimerman was Rew’s mentor and he guided a very young Lady Demon team to a great performance (102 points) at the Southland Championships. Heimerman’s technical expertise and passion for coaching have been key attributes in his rapid rise among the bright young faces in collegiate track and field coaching circles. They combine with his love for his alma mater and his tremendous work ethic, among other qualities, which led to him being named head women’s track and field coach at Northwestern State in August 2007. Even before taking the helm of the program, he was a key factor in helping the Lady Demons make the most consistently high finishes at Southland Conference championships of any Louisiana team. That has been true since Heimerman joined the NSU coaching staff in the late 1990s. Since Heimerman wrapped up his own outstanding competitive career and joined the coaching staff, NSU has consistently produced nationallycompetitive throwers. Ten of NSU’s last 11 All-America awards have been won by Heimerman-trained competitors. He’s coached 19 athletes who have reached the NCAA Outdoor Championships. In the last six years, 11 javelin throwers (three in 2007, two last year) surpassed the NCAA qualifying standard. When Cody Fillinich won his fourth All-America award at the 2009 NCAA meet, it was also the ninth time in 11 years that Northwestern had either a male or a female javelin thrower reach the NCAA Outdoors. All of the athletes have been Louisiana prep products and four previously — Regina Roe, Latrell Frederick, Samantha Ford and Fillinich— won All-America honors by virtue of their performances at the national meet. Ford reached the 12-woman USA Olympic Trials Finals in 2008. Last year provided the most unlikely member of the NSU javelin All-America contingent. Jessica Talley walked on in November, having never thrown over 130 feet in high school. She added almost 30 feet to that under Heimerman’s guidance, throwing 158-6, and finishing 11th at the NCAA Championships to win All-America honors. Heimerman developed Rew develop into a legendary competitor in school and Southland Conference history. She first achieved national prominence in 2007 as a freshman, when she qualified in two events for the USA Junior Nationals and made the USATFCCA (coaches’ association) All-Academic Team. She capped her career last spring with All-America honors in the shot and discus, eight Southland titles, being named Academic All-America, USATFCCA National Field Events Scholar-Athlete of the Year and claiming the NCAA discus crown. It’s not just technical knowledge that makes Heimerman a great coach – it’s his competitive fire and his ability to instill that quality in his athletes. After capping his competitive career with an eighth-place finish at the 1998 USA Outdoor Championships in the shot put, Heimerman emerged as a highly regarded throws coach who has made a major impact on NSU track and field history. The 1996 Southland Conference Outdoor champion in the shot put, Heimerman is credited with significantly shaping the record-shattering careers of Rew, Fillinich, along with Frederick, also the 1999 USA Junior Champion; Ford and USATF Junior All-America javelin throwers Dawn Comeaux (2004) and Randy Fauntleroy (2006). Heavy scoring in the shot put helped the 2001 Demons win the SLC Indoor title. Big point totals in the shot and javelin spearheaded the drive to the 2002 SLC Outdoor crown for the NSU men. Adam Malloy (Millersville, 2006) Assistant Coach • Distance 1st season
Adam Malloy, who helped the James Madison 2010 women’s cross country team capture its first Eastern College Athletic Conference team and individual championship in ten years, is the newest addition to the Northwestern State track and field coaching staff. Malloy came on board late last summer as the head coach for women’s cross country team. This spring, Malloy will work primarily as an assistant coach with the distance-running athletes during the indoor and outdoor track seasons. “Adam has been great addition to our staff,” said long-time NSU track and field head Leon Johnson. “He has great knowledge about distance running and he’s doing a great job with the runners. With time, I know he could lead us to
the top of the conference.” “Adam doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty,” said veteran NSU head women’s track and field head coach Mike Heimerman. “He came in only days before the athletes were to report to practice and he hit the ground running and spending a lot hours preparing the runners and we feel he’s going to do well for us.” The Ephrata, Penn., native has a solid background as a student-athlete and part-time coach in distance running. Before graduating from James Madison with a M.S. degree in Kinesiology-Sport Leadership in May, he served as a volunteer coach for the women’s cross country team. In that time, the Dukes captured several team and individual championship titles including the 2009-2010 Colonial Athletic Association steeplechase championship, 2010 CAA cross country team championship and the 2010 ECAC team and individual championships. A 2009 graduate of Millersville University of Pennsylvania, Malloy was an all-round standout student-athlete and a two-time NCAA qualifier on the cross country team. He became the top finisher for the cross country team on many occasions and marked his named in the Marauders’ record books among the top 25 all-time finishers in the 8K (13th) and 10K courses (24th). Malloy also contributed on the track, setting school records in the 4x400 and 4x800 (second), 400-meter dash (sixth), and the 800-meter dash and 3,000-meter steeplechase (tenth) and earning a spot on the 2009 All-Conference 3,000-Meter Steeplechase outdoor team.
Dean Johnson (Alderson-Broaddus College, 2006) Assistant Coach 14th season
Among the nation’s most highly regarded horizontal jumps coaches, Dean Johnson is in his fifth season back on the track and field staff at his alma mater. Head women’s track and field coach for nine seasons, Johnson left the NSU staff after the 2003 season to take a teaching and coaching position at adjacent Natchitoches Central High School, where three of his five daughters were attending. He remains a teacher at NCHS, having seen a fourth daughter reach high school. He is the son of venerable head men’s track and field coach Leon Johnson, and while he’s worked with his father for most of the past two decades since competing for him, Dean has risen from the formidable shadow of his dad’s accomplishments and forged a name for himself in the sport. Coaching two Olympic triple jumpers will do that for you – USA team members LaMark Carter in 2000 and Kenta Bell in 2004 and 2008. Bell told reporters after qualifying for his second Olympics that in his training, he uses the strategy “WWDD” -- “what would Dean do?” Johnson’s expertise helped the NSU men win seven Southland Conference titles from 1992-2002 while he worked with the heavy-scoring jump stable for the Demons. As head women’s coach, he guided Lady Demon teams to their best-ever point totals in Southland Conference championship competition – 112 for third place, best at the time in school history, in 1997; 84 points (fourth place) in 1998; and 108 points for third place in 1999. The 2000 squad was also third place, scoring 97 points. Johnson has earned national recognition through USA Track and Field. He was certified as a Level Two Coach in the sprints, hurdles and relays in 1988 and in 1994 received Level Two certification in the multi-events. He has also been part of a select group of jump coaches invited to attend USA Track and Field’s elite jumps seminars for long and triple jumpers, and has spoken to state coaching clinics in Louisiana and Missouri. The 46-year-old is a DeRidder native and DHS graduate. He has five daughters: Loren, Keagan, Lindsey, Morgan and Lillie.

A new $6.9 million Wellness, Recreation and Activity Center opened on the campus in 2005; and Morrison Hall, the Family and Consumer Sciences Building, and Williamson Hall have been completely renovated and restored. A new Student Services Center on the site of the former West Caspari Hall will be complete early next year. Over $32 million in construction by a private company has added two modified residence halls to the campus in recent years. Funding has also been obtained to rebuild the East Caspari Hall and replace the underground electrical distribution system. Northwestern academic programs and athletic teams continue to receive positive national recognition. The Computer Information Systems program, for example, won five consecutive national championships in academic competition in systems analysis, and the NSU men’s basketball team defeated Iowa in the NCAA national championship tournament. A former center on the Northwestern football team, Webb is an avid supporter of the university’s athletic programs and has held positions of leadership at the national level in intercollegiate athletics. He has served as chair of the board of directors of the Southland Conference and has been a member of the prestigious NCAA Executive Council and the NCAA Division I Board of Directors that oversee all major policy decisions by the governing body for major college sports. He currently serves as the Southland Conference representative on the NCAA Presidential Advisory Group. A 1965 graduate of Northwestern in mathematics and business education, Webb earned a master of science degree in mathematics from NSU in 1966. He received a doctorate in education from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1971 with a concentration in mathematics and research. Webb was a member of the faculty of Longwood College in Farmville, Va, from 1966 until 1974. He served as Director of Higher Education and Teacher Certification in the Louisiana Department of Education from 1974 through 1976. He moved to Southeastern Louisiana University in 1976 and in 13 years there held positions as director of institutional research, EEO officer, registrar and member of the mathematics faculty. He became Dean of Instruction and Graduate Studies and professor of mathematics at Northwestern in 1989. In that position, he was responsible for campus-wide policy development, planning, advancement, and review of both graduate and undergraduate programs. While Webb was in that position, graduate enrollment increased by 35 percent, and internal funding for faculty research increased by 200 percent. As dean, Webb proposed the concept for NSU’s successful Freshman Connection Program and served as a member of the writing team for a grant proposal that resulted in a five year, $1.7 million Title III grant to improve student retention. He also chaired the steering committee for NSU’s Self Study for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He has been active in the community as a member of the board of directors of the Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches, the Natchitoches Historic Foundation, the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Society, Rotary Club, and the First Baptist Church. Webb and his wife Brenda have two daughters, both honor graduates of Northwestern. Tamara and her husband, former NSU All-America baseball pitcher Reggie Gatewood, live in McKinney, Texas, withtheir children Tyler and Ava. In the midst of his 16th year as director of athletics at Northwestern State, Greg Burke has received national acclaim for the job he’s done in his adopted hometown. Burke has been athletics director at Northwestern since Aug. 29, 1996, when his first day included speaking at the annual NSU/Independence Bowl Kickoff Luncheon. Burke is the longest serving AD at any Louisiana institution. He has steered NSU athletics to many of its greatest accomplishments while overseeing a program that has fielded championship caliber teams in nearly all of the school’s NCAA Division I sports. Last year, he was included among 29 winners of the Under Amour AD of the Year Award presented by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). He was also among four winners chosen to be involved in a Street and Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal panel discussion on current Division I athletics issues. Joining NSU’s Burke were Purdue’s Morgan Burke (no relation), Samford’s Bob Roller and Lee Fowler of North Carolina State, with the transcript of their discussion distributed to national media by the Sports Business Daily. Burke just completed a term as the 201011 president of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association. Burke’s 15 years as athletic director include 32 Southland Conference regular-season or tournament championships, 54 All-American and Academic All-American student athletes, and three U.S. Olympic competitors. Seventeen NSU teams have taken part in NCAA or WNIT postseason competition. Under his guidance, Northwestern State has led all 13 public institutions in Louisiana, and all 12 Southland Conference institutions, in the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate and Graduation Success Rate reports. The school’s athletic facilities have undergone nearly $7 million in improvements in the past four years. NSU in 2004-05 became the first (and remains the only) Southland Conference member in the league’s five decades of history to sweep football, men’s basketball and baseball championships in the same athletic year. It’s been done only once in Southeastern Conference history, by Alabama in 1933-34, and only four times in Big Ten Conference history, the last time by Michigan State in 1979-80. Those accomplishments have come with one of the more modest athletic budgets in the state and conference. Burke’s management skill and fundraising ability have been pivotal. Burke generated a $2 million series of sponsorships for new scoreboards installed for 2008-09 at all NSU athletic venues and spearheaded the $700,000 Second Century Circle fencing project for athletic venues. Burke has displayed a remarkable ability to hire dynamic head coaches, including several whose success at Northwestern State has propelled them to national prominence in subsequent positions, including basketball’s Mike McConathy who guided Northwestern in NCAA Tournament play in his second season and has been back to postseason since. NSU’s 2006 basketball team scored one of the most memorable upsets in the history of March Madness, coming from 17 down to stun No. 15-ranked Iowa 64-63. Burke has selected head coaches who have subsequently been hired by Alabama, Florida, Missouri, New Mexico, Kentucky, Virginia, Mississippi State and Wichita State. From his first day on the job, Burke has stressed the importance of having a balanced athletic program. To that end, tremendous competitive strides have been made in women’s athletics under his guidance. The NSU soccer program was the first one in Louisiana ever to reach the NCAA Tournament and remains the only one with multiple appearances. Volleyball set attendance records and has made its best-ever showings in conference play in recent years. In softball, NSU posted the nation’s most improved win total in 2010 regular-season play under second-year coach Donald Pickett, and moved among league contenders in 2011. The Lady Demons joined Stanford as the only women’s tennis programs in the country in 2010 with only one regular-season loss, while sweeping Southland regular-season and tournament titles and making a first-ever NCAA Team Tournament appearance. While on-field success by Demon and Lady Demon teams has been a source of pride for NSU supporters, Burke is equally proud of the tone which has been set within the NSU athletic program as it relates to academic achievement and community service. The academic accomplishments are reflected annually in the NCAA’s APR and GSR studies. Community service by NSU student-athletes, coaches and staff more than doubled to over 5,000 hours in 2009-10 and remained at that level in 2010-11. Burke spearheaded the adoption of the slogan “Great Tradition, Brighter Future” for NSU Athletics, and the creation of NSU Athletics “Cornerstones” for student-athletes: “Academic Achievement, Personal Responsibility, Competitive Success … Every Minute, Every Hour, Every Day!” In 2005, Burke was one of three recipients of the All-America Football Foundation’s Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award and that same year, was also tabbed as one of two Natchitoches Parish Cenla Newsmakers of 2005 by the Alexandria Town Talk newspaper’s editorial staff. He received the 2006 “Outstanding Alumni Award” from his alma mater, Marlington High School in Alliance, Ohio, recognizing his community service and professional achievements. Burke became one of only 21 alumni honored since the award was instituted in 1982. In June 2006, he was a featured speaker and panelist at the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors convention in New Orleans, addressing members of the College Athletic Business Managers of America and also participating in a panel discussion of “Fundraising from an Athletic Director’s Perspective” speaking to the National Association of Athletic Development Directors. Since 2007, Burke has been a member of the prestigious NCAA Championships/Sports Management Cabinet, a 49-person panel which makes recommendations to the NCAA Board of Directors on key issues facing Division I athletics. He previously served a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee (1999-2002) and concurrently served a term on the eight-member NCAA FCS Committee that administers the national playoffs. Since his committee term expired, Burke has served as a site supervisor for Football Championship Subdivision playoff games across the nation and he is regarded as one of the country’s premiere advocates of FCS football. In 2004, NSU received the highest possible rating, “fully certified,” from the National Collegiate Athletic Association, affirming that Northwestern operates its athletic program in substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the NCAA Division I membership. Burke is a past president of the Natchitoches Kiwanis Club and remains active in that civic group. He has also been part of the steering committee for the Natchitoches Christmas Festival and is a former president of the Natchitoches Area Jaycees. He is involved with the American Heart Association and was 2010 March of Dimes chairman locally. He and his wife, Susu, is a Natchitoches native, NSU graduate and an elementary teacher. Their 17-year-old daughter, Catherine, is captain of the St. Mary’s High School cheerleading squad, in addition to being a point guard on the basketball team and a member of the tennis team.

Kyle Barnard
Interim Athletic Ticket Manager Kyle Barnard has been named the interim athletic ticket manager and is also assistingwith development. His duties include working with event management, external affairs, and alumni relations aside from his ticket manager needs. His career plans are to become an associate athletic director. His first year at Northwestern State served as a graduate assistant for the department. While working with game day operations and marketing/promotions, he served on the diversity council for NSU during the NCAA recertification process. Kyle organized a NCAA diversity workshop for both coaches and players. Barnard received his undergraduate degree in kinesiology and fitness from Ouachita Baptist University. He was a 4 year letterman and a 3 year starter on the offensive line for the OBU football team. As a captain his junior and senior year, the team had their highest ranking in school history. He served as member and president of OBU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. While attending OBU, Kyle reached the dean’s list and was a member of IFC (Inter Fraternal Council) and also was a member of Rho Sigma men’s social club. His hometown is The Woodlands, Texas. In high school, he was named to the all-district and all-county teams at The Woodlands High School. Kyle also earned a power lifting letter. The son of Ron and Brenda Barnard, he was born Nov. 13, 1987, in Corpus Christi, Texas and has one brother, Conall. He is currently married to Brittany Barnard, a pediatric RN at Cabrini Hospital. Faculty Athletic Representative Faculty Athletic Representative Jody Biscoe is Associate Professor of Psychology and Addiction Studies at Northwestern State, where he is the coordinator for the undergraduate Addiction Studies, and Substance Abuse/Prevention concentrations. Since 2006, he has served as Faculty Athletic Representative for NSU. This role includes the chair of the NSU Athletic Council. Since 2006, Northwestern State University has made numerous paradigm shifts in how it addresses the needs of student-athletes; however, one thing has been consistent in that its student-athletes are winners on the field and in the classroom. All have heard about higher educational institutions being penalized by the NCAA for academic improprieties. NSU has attempted to be a model program of “Doing Things the Right Way,” by following the Athletic Department motto: Great Tradition – Brighter Futures. This past year, NSU was one of only four schools in the State of Louisiana that did not receive any penalties for low NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) with baseball, soccer, softball, tennis, women’s indoor & outdoor track, and volleyball rating in the top three in the Southland Conference. Among the 40 Northwestern State student-athletes and athletic staff members who graduated in spring 2010, 10 of the 20 receiving undergraduate degrees graduated either cum laude or magna cum laude. Graduation rates of student-athletes in soccer, volleyball, men’s basketball, baseball and football ranked in the top four of the Conference. These accomplishments could not have been achieved without the support and efforts of the student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and administration. Also, Jody is the Director for the Louisiana Addiction Technology Transfer Center at NSU. He has served on the National Addiction Technology Transfer Center’s (ATTC) - Practice and National Leadership Institute Committee. In addition, he has coordinated five nationally recognized leadership institutes for Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico and a member of the National ATTC Leadership Directors Committee. Recently, he was appointed to the NAADAC - National Addiction Studies & Standards Collaborative Committee. This past year, Jody was selected to serve on the United States Health and Human Services – Substance Abuse & Mental Health Service Administration Expert Panel concerning workforce issues. Jody’s married to his wife, Veronica (Roni), an avid runner, and daughter Roxy is a senior co-captain on the varsity cheerleading squad and Lady Tiger basketball team at St. Mary’s School. Cary Bruno
Assistant Academic Coordinator Enhanced Academic Program Advisor Cary Bruno is the Assistant Academic Coordinator with oversight of the following sports: Freshman Football, softball, volleyball, men’s track and cross country, women’s track and cross country, and women’s basketball. Cary is also the Director of the Enhanced Academic Program, a program that mentors academically underprepared student-athletes. Bruno also assists Carrie Crowell with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, which is designed to assist with the transition phase of college to work . Bruno was a member of the Demon Softball team from 2005-2009. During her time at Northwestern State, her most memorable honors include the esteemed Southland Conference Steve McCarty Citizenship Award as well as being selected as the Southland Conference Softball Student Athlete of the Year in 2008. Bruno graduated from NSU in May 2009 with a B.S. in Business Administration. She is currently earning her Master’s degree in Student Personnel Services with a concentration in Student Affairs Administration.

Academic Coordinator Senior Woman Administrator Carrie Crowell, a two-year Academic All-Southland Conference soccer standout for Northwestern State in 2005-06, from Arlington, TX, now serves as an academic coordinator in the Johnnie Emmons Athletic Study Center at NSU as well as being the Senior Woman
Administrator. Crowell served as an intern in the Academic Services and CHAMPS/Life Skills program in January 2009, while also completing her second season as a graduate assistant soccer coach and finishing work on her master’s of science in sport administration. She was a magna cum laude graduate of NSU in August 2007 in business administration, and also was a key contributor on the Lady Demons’ 2005 NCAA Tournament team that won the Southland Conference Tournament. Crowell is the academic coordinator for the sports of soccer, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s track, volleyball, and veteran football. She also heads the Enhanced Academic Program which provides additional help for student-athletes and aids in maintaining a healthy and successful balance between academics and athletics. Crowell served an internship in the summer of 2008 with the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, helping stage events supporting a Nationwide Tour golf tournament co-sponsored by the Hall. She also assisted in daily operations of the museum in Springfield, Mo., and helped stage the Missouri High School Basketball All-Stars Game. Crowell was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta honors society from 2005-2007, graduating in three years with a 3.74 grade point average. She made the SLC Commissioners’ Academic Honor Roll in the last three seasons she competed for NSU, capped by a 2006 season in which her defense helped the Lady Demons set a school record for least goals allowed per game. Crowell graduated with her Masters of Science in Sport Administration with a 4.0 GPA in May 2009.

Dustin Eubanks Assistant Athletic Director NCAA Compliance Director
Dustin Eubanks is in his 13th year in the NSU athletic department and his 12th year at the helm of the compliance duties, keeping all athletic personnel current and in accordance with NCAA and Southland Conference guidelines. A 1996 education graduate of Northwestern, the 38-year-old avid fan of all teams that hail from Pittsburgh seized an opportunity to serve as a graduate assistant in the sports information department at Northwestern while beginning the pursuit of his master’s degree in health and physical education (concentration in sports administration), which he obtained in May of 2003, and was impressive enough to earn a promotion to fulltime status in November 1998. Eubanks is married to the former Dawn Hornsby of Branch and the couple has two daughters, Emilie (16) and Taylor Nicole (5). The sisters share the same birthdate. Dustin and Dawn, who is the Associate Director of Financial Aid at NSU, will celebrated their eighth wedding anniversary this summer.

Roxanne Freeman began working at NSU in 1983 as an accounting clerk in business affairs. She transferred to the athletic department as football/baseball/track secretary and served under Sam Goodwin, Leon Johnson and several baseball coaches for eight seasons before graduating with a B.S. in accounting in May 1995. Freeman then became the compliance coordinator and academic advisor during a threeyear span before leaving in 1998. She returned to NSU in the Fall of 2000 in her current position as Business Manager where she now serves as liaison between the athletic department and business affairs. She has one son, Aaron Pizani, who is also an NSU alum.
Todd Garzarelli
Associate AD for External Affairs
Todd Garzarelli was named as the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs in October 2011 after a successful three-year stint at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and will oversee all external areas at Northwestern State, including the NSU Athletic Association. Garzarelli came to Northwestern State from SIUE where he immediately made an impact on the SIUE Athletics Department in helping but the external unit from the ground up. During his short tenure, he signed the school’s first-ever apparel contract, helped launch a newly designed website, and worked to enhance the radio network that included online streaming for the first time. He also established a corporate sponsorship platform and a compreshensive annual fund and put together a major gift program and portfolio to enhance a $50 million capital campaign. Prior to SIUE, Garzarelli was at Northern Illinois University, where he served most recently as the Associate Athletic Director for Marketing, Corporate and Broadcast Relations. During his tenure at NIU, revenue in corporate sponsorship, tickets, licensing, hospitality and media trade all increased dramatically. Garzarelli also successfully negotiated and landed multi-year agreements with Chicago Sports Leader in radio WSCR 670 AM “The Score” and Comcast Sportnet Chicago which gave Huskie Athletics inmeasureable exposure in radio and television. In all, the Huskie football team played in more than 40 regional or national television broadcasts during his tenure. Garzarelli also established the first NIU All-Access platform on internet that streamed over 100 audio and video events annually. Before his time at NIU, Garzarelli previously worked as the Director of Marketing and Promotions at the United States Military Academy (Army) from 2001 to 2004. He also served as marketing associate at the University of Missouri during the 2000-2001 season. He spent one season at the Air Force Academy as a Marketing and Development Assistant and one season as an Assistant to the Director of External Affairs at Saint Francis (Penn.). At Army, he helped maintain an 18-station radio network that covered most of the U.S. market and assisted in a regional television agreement for Army football. He also played an instrumental part in landing Jeep as the Title Sponsor of the annual Army/Navy Football game. Army Athletics increased corporate sponsorships, tickets and overall attendance under Garzarelli’s watch.

Track and Field Athletic Administration • Athletic Administration Garzarelli received a sport management degree from Slippery Rock University in 1998. He also earned a master’s in sport management from Northern Illinois in 2006. Garzarelli and his wife, Leah, have a five-year old daughter, Goia, and a two-year old son, Gabe.
Clay Shaw
Asst. Director of Marketing & Promotions After a brief hiatus from college athletics, Clay Shaw returns to the profession as the new assistant for sport marketing and promotions at Northwestern State. An Ohio native, the 2003 graduate of the University of Toledo earned his bachelor’s degree in graphic design with coursework in business and marketing. He enrolled at Bowling Green University in 2006 to work towards a career in sports marketing and was a volunteer intern. He followed that with a marketing assistant internship at the University of New Mexico and the University of Tulsa. He landed his first full-time job in college athletics as the promotions coordinator at California State University-Bakersfield. Shaw stepped away from college athletics to work in professional sports as a ticket representative for the Fresno Grizzlies Triple-A baseball team, and the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning. Prior to joining NSU, Shaw spent two years with Bisk Education as a representative of Villanova University Online.
Rocky Smith
Director of Athletic Facilities Rocky Smith is in his first year as the Director of Athletic Facilities and Game Operations at NSU. Smith began his career as a student worker under Alan Pasch and progressed his way from student worker to graduate assistant to then assistant director. He has served as game manager for the majority of sports for NSU along with special event management for the university. A native of Bedford, Texas and a graduate of Trinity High School, Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in general studies from NSU and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in sports administration. At Trinity, he participated in gymnastics state and national competitions in rings, pommel horse, and parallel bars. In college, he was a part of the Spirit of Northwestern marching band as a bass trombonist and a four year rower. Smith is in his third year of being an assistant coach for the rowing team specializing in sculling. Born March 9th of 1986, he is the son of David and Robbie Smith and brother of younger sister Delayne Smith.
Scott Smith
Asst. Dir. of Special Facilities for Events Operations Scott Smith is no stranger to Northwestern State athletics. He has spent the last two years with the Lady Demon tennis program while working on a master’s degree. He joined the staff as an assistant coach and brought experience to the tennis program as a teaching pro and a head college coach. From 2002-2004, Smith was a tennis teaching professional at the Raveneaux Country Club in Spring, Texas, as well as the Woodlands Country Club in Houston. The next two years he was the assistant coach at the University of the Ozarks from 2004-2006 and became the head coach at Ozarks from 2006-2008. He has been a tennis teaching professional at the Westside Tennis and Fitness Club in Houston since 2008 before joining Coach Patric Dubois on the NSU coaching staff in August 2009. Smith received his B.S. degree in business administration in 2007 from the University of the Ozarks. He received his associate’s degree in recreational leadership – Tennis Teaching from Tyler (Texas) Junior College in 2002. He is currently working on his master’s degree in sport administration here at Northwestern State.

Northwestern State Sports Medicine • Sports Medicine • Sports Medicine ED EVANS Head Athletic Trainer Georgia Southern, 1979 23rd Season at NSU In his 23rd season directing the Eugene Christmas Sports Medicine Center at Northwestern State and 30th year in the profession, Ed Evans has earned the respect of his peers, along with honors from Northwestern State’s athletic letterwinners and the Louisiana governor’s office for his contributions to the field of sports medicine and athletic training in general and to Northwestern State in particular. Evans was presented honorary membership in the Graduate N Club, the association of athletic letterwinners at Northwestern State, during 2005 homecoming ceremonies. Only four other individuals have received such an honor from the N Club, which paid tribute to Evans’ dedicated, unselfish service in four decades (counting his time as a graduate student) to student-athletes at NSU. In 2004, Evans was named the regional “College Athletic Trainer of the Year” by the Southeastern Athletic Trainers Association, which includes members who are in the profession in seven states from Louisiana to Georgia and Kentucky. Evans served six years as president of the Louisiana Athletic Trainers’ Association and six more as secretary/treasurer. He was enshrined in the LATA Hall of Fame in 2000. Evans is a member of the Advisory Committee on Athletic Training to the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. He also serves on the Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness, appointed early in 2000 by then Gov. Mike Foster. Evans worked as a graduate assistant at Northwestern from 1979-82. He earned his masters degree in physical education (1980) and completed 30 hours beyond the master’s with an emphasis in guidance and counseling. Evans served four years in the U.S Navy as a hospital corpsman and physical/occupational therapy technician. He spent seven years as athletic trainer at Natchitoches Central High School, working the Louisiana High School Coaches Association’s All-Star games two years, before joining the Northwestern staff. He and his wife Chris have three sons, Jonathan, David and Tim. An avid cyclist, he generates donations for the training room in an annual spring bike-a-thon. Great Tradition • Brighter Future

Track and Field Sports Medicine • Sports Medicine • Sports Medicine JASON DRURY Assistant Athletic Trainer Idaho State, 1999 7th Season at NSU Jason Drury joined the sports medicine staff at Northwestern State University in the summer of 2005. Drury came to NSU from Natchitoches Central High School where he was the head athletic trainer for five years. In the spring of 2009, Drury took over as the head football athletic trainer for the Demons, after working for three seasons with the women’s soccer team and one season with men’s basketball team. A 1999 graduate of Idaho State University in biology, Drury worked with numerous sports in Pocatello, Idaho including football, men’s basketball and track and field. Drury earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Northwestern State in 2001, during which time he worked as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the NSU softball team. Drury is a native of Paoli, Indiana. He and his wife, Toni, have been married for eight years. They have two children, Maddox and Kenzie. DAVID BERKELEY-TUCHMAYER Assistant Athletic Trainer Appalachian State, 2006
6th Season at NSU David Berkeley-Tuchmayer begins his sixth season on the NSU athletic training staff and fourth as an assistant trainer. Tuchmayer will handle head training duties for the Lady Demon soccer team and will oversee baseball and softball. He is a certified member of on the National Athletic Trainers Association and a licensed member of the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. Tuchmayer, a native of Wilmington, N.C., and a 2006 graduate of Appalachian State, is the son of Harry Tuchmayer and Kathleen Berkeley. He has one brother, Jeremy. DR. WILLIAM CRENSHAW Team Physician
Dr. Will Crenshaw is in his first year as a member of the Northwestern State team physician staff. A native of Alexandria, Dr. Crenshaw graduated Cum Laude from Centenary in 1999 when receiving his bachelor’s degree and earned his medical degree from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans in 2004. He worked his residency at Campbell Clinic in Tennessee beginning in 2004 until 2009. He is a member of the American Medical Association, OREF (Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation), and AAOS Resident member. He received the Kellogg Endowment Scholarship in 2002 and Alpha Omega Alpha in 2003. He is married. Dr. James Knecht has been Northwestern’s team physician since 1984. He finished his pre-med curriculum from LSU in 1975. While at LSU, he was an Academic All-SEC and Academic All-American football player in 1974. He has been in private practice family medicine in Natchitoches since 1982. In addition to being Northwestern’s team physician, he has also been Natchitoches Central’s team physician since 1992. Dr. Knecht is actively involved in many professional organizations, including the Natchitoches Parish Medical Society, Active Staff Physicians at Natchitoches Parish Hospital, and the Louisiana State Medical Society. He is also a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice and Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice. His father, Gene, was an assistant football coach at Northwestern and has been active in the Graduate N Club for three decades.

Dr. Mike Leddy is in his third season with Northwestern State serving as a team physician. Dr. Leddy received his undergraduate degree and Doctorate of Medicine from Boston University. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Louisiana State University Medical Center-New Orleans in 2002. He then completed a sports medicine and arthroscopy fellowship with David Fischer, MD at TRIA

Track and Field Sports Medicine • Sports Medicine • Sports Medicine Orthopaedics in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he worked on the medical staff to the Minnesota Vikings, Wild, Twins, and Timberwolves. After fellowship, Dr. Leddy practiced in Kissimmee, Florida with Orthopaedic Associates of Osceola. There, he cared for many local high school and collegiate athletes. He was head team physician for the Florida Seals Professional Hockey Team and Osceola Ghostriders Professional Indoor Football Team. He was also the lead orthopaedic surgeon for the Capital One Bowl and part of the medical staff for the NBA Combines. In 2007, Dr. Leddy accepted an invitation to return to Louisiana and join Mid-State Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center in Alexandria. He specializes in sports medicine, arthroscopy of the shoulder, knee and hip, and knee and shoulder reconstruction. Dr. Leddy is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. In 2007, he was part of the inaugural class of orthopaedic surgeons to receive a Subspecialty Board Certification in Sports Medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the Louisiana Orthopaedic Association. A native of Hopewell Junction, New York, Dr. Leddy is married to the forrmer Andrée Braud of Belle Chasse, Louisiana, and they have two children, Anna Clare and Mary Caitlin. His hobbies include spending time with his family, golf, hunting, and reading.
DR. CHRIS RICH Team Physician
Dr. Chris Rich completed his undergraduate degree at LSU in Baton Rouge, followed by a Doctor of Medicine degree from the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. He finished his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at LSU in 1988. Dr. Rich is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, with a successful Recertification with a specialty interest in sports medicine in 2000. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a member of the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine, a charter member of the Louisiana Sports Medicine Society, and a board member of the Louisiana Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Rich has been the Head Team Physician for the Northwestern Demons since 1990. His practice specializes in sports medicine, arthroscopy of the shoulder and knee, and knee reconstruction. During his tenure at NSU, over 500 athletes have sustained an injury that required a surgery, with an incredible rate of return to full sports competition of 99%. A native of San Antonio, Dr. Rich was a three-year letterman in football as an offensive lineman at LSU from 1976-78. He earned Academic AllSoutheastern Conference honors in 1977 and 1978. Dr. Rich is the managing partner of Mid State Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center in Alexandria. Mid State, along with Christus St Frances Cabrini Hospital, was designated as #1 in Orthopaedics for the State of Louisiana for 2004 by HEALTHGRADES, “The Healthcare Quality Experts”. He is married to the former Vickie Rainey, and they have three children, Jeff, Margaret and Stacie. His hobbies include spending time with his family, golf, fishing, and duck hunting. The Northwestern State track team competed on a cinder oval in old Demon (Football) Stadium until the early 1970s, when the stadium underwent major renovations. A new facility exclusively for track and field was constructed adjacent to the football stadium and opened in 1977. The track was resurfaced in 1987 and 1995, but drainage problems near the third turn resulted in damage that prevented its use for home meets from 2002-06, although NSU was able to train at the track for all but one fall. The facility underwent a redesign, relocating some event venues and enhancing others, with installation of a world-class track, and reopened for competition for the 2007 season. The complex is named after legendary NSU athlete and coach Walter Ledet. Ledet was the first All-American athlete in the history of Northwestern State University, making the All-American football team in 1938. After his graduation, he became an assistant football and track coach, then was named the head track coach in 1952 and built a program which dominated the state for more than a decade. He guided the Demons to five straight Gulf States Conference chamionships from 1953-57. He retired as track coach in 1964. He was among the inaugural class of inductees for the Graduate ‘N’ Club Hall of Fame and was elected to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. He was also selected as a member of the NSU Top 100 Football Players of the Century in 2006.

Marking the 25th anniversary of Northwestern State’s 1981 NCAA 4x100 meter relay victory, coach Jerry Dyes and the four All-American sprinters on the fabled team were enshrined on Oct. 28, 2006 in the Graduate N Club Hall of Fame, the highest honor Northwestern affords its former athletes and coaches. Pictured, left to right, are Dyes, Mark Duper, Victor Oatis, Carolyn Delaney, widow of Joe Delaney, and Mario Johnson. In the 1981 race, the Demons were an obvious crowd favorite, lining up against Georgia, Tennessee, Arizona State, San Jose State, Florida State, Arizona, Oklahoma State and Baylor in the final.
