NSU RAISES EXPECTATIONS FOR 2012 SEASON
After ending the 2011 season on a high-note, the Northwestern State volleyball team will look to carry on the momentum as it enters the 2012 campaign. The Lady Demons won their final two regular season matches last season, defeating Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls State to earn a trip to the Southland Conference Tournament. Once there, the squad took a set off top-seeded Texas State, who went on to earn a NCAA Tournament berth. NSU returns its entire starting lineup from last season and 11 of 12 letterwinners. It also added three outstanding freshmen to provide the much-needed depth to the roster, especially at the middle-blocker position. “Our main goal for this season and every season is to win the conference tournament. Though, I’m sure we’re not the only ones with that goal and there are a lot of talented teams in the Southland Conference this year. There are a good number of teams with more experience than we have and that will be a great challenge for us. We are still going to be young and a lot of our young players will need to produce at the level of the upperclassmen they are playing against. This is not anything new to us. We dealt wih the same issues last season and it was not something we backed down from. This is a competitive group and a tightly knit family. We know what our obstacles are and we

are going to prepare to meet them with a competitive fire,” said co-head coach Hugh Hernesman. The roster is highlighted by 2011 NSU Co-MVP’s Stacey DiFrancesco and Keelie Arneson. Both earned First-Team All-Louisiana accolades last season and played their way into receiving All-Southland Conference honors. DiFrancesco earned Freshman of the Year and Second-team All-Conference after leading the SLC with 14 double-doubles in 16 matches. She broke the school record for attacks in a season (1, 390), and placed second in the record books in total kills (424). DiFrancesco finished the season second in the SLC in kills, averaging 3.79 per set on the season and 4.16 per set in conference play. Arneson won LSWA Co-Libero of the year in 2011 and set the NSU
single-season record for digs, scooping up 539 and surpassing Rachel Ford’s mark of 528 set in 2006. She also earned Southern Mississippi Invitational All-Tournament honors at the beginning of the year, and finished sixth in the SLC in digs after reaching double-digits in 29 of 30 matches. “Our program will always be built on great defense and that won’t change. We’ll be even better in that area this year based on improved skill, a year of experience at this level, a stronger grasp of our defensive system and greater physicality at the net,” Hernesman said. Nicole Hajka is the lone senior in the group and is coming off a breakout year in 2011 where she increased her attacking production by nine times from the year before. She is joined by sophomores Vanessa Cole-

man, Mackenzie Neely, Emily Sweet and Kelly Jimenez as returning starters for 2012. This past spring, the team spent a lot of time in the NSU strength and conditioning program to continue getting faster and stronger. The Lady Demons did exercises in plyometrics, agility and conditioning, in addition to improving their skills on the court. “Overall, our team will be a more physical team than last year, which was an area that needed to be addressed simply because we were so young. Our returners had a spring and an offseason to get stronger and become better able to compete at this level. Additionally, we have the ability to add increased size at all of the hitting positions just by adding our two freshmen middles and Caiti O’Connell, who is coming off of a redshirt season. This increased size gives us the ability to play differently match to match, opponent to opponent and even set to set. I believe we will see more improvement in our offense than defense as we continue to add attacking options and as our current hitters continue to improve. Lastly, people will be able to watch a group that has great chemistry. Their chemistry will carry them a long way and it also makes this group a lot of fun to watch because they are a true ‘team’,” Hernesman said. The Southland Conference lost its top two teams from last season, Texas State and Texas-San Anto-
nio, as well as Texas-Arlington who finished sixth. In return, the SLC gained Oral Roberts, which was one of the top programs in the Summit League. “I fully expect the conference to be a battle each and every weekend. We add a very strong Oral Roberts team that finished in the same neighborhood as Texas State and UTSA as far as RPI last season, and will be one of the teams to beat,” Hernesman said. “Still, there are a good number of teams that can challenge for the top spot this year. There are programs that return a lot of talent and experience as well as programs who have traditionally done very well in the Southland that we still need to catch, but I don’t believe we’re all that far away. Our staff and our players believe in the team we have this year.” The Lady Demons are predicted to finish in the middle of the pack in
the SLC in 2012, but proved last year that they can exceed expectations when they finished two spots ahead of their projection. They also took a set off of SLC Champion Texas State and defeated long-time powerhouse Central Arkansas on the road to prove that the league is more balanced than in the previous years. “When talking with other coaches in our conference, the one thing that almost always gets brought up is how the teams that have traditionally been at the bottom of the standings have improved over the last couple years,” Hernesman said. “The bottom of the conference is raising the level of play and that creates some great competition each match league-wide. I wouldn’t be shocked to see our conference regular season champion with 4 or 5 losses. It is wide open this year.”

Hugh Hernesman Breaks Down The Roster
Position: Setter Players: Emily Sweet, Kaitlyn Brooks
Our setting situation should be a strength of ours in 2012. Last season, we ran a 5-1 offense where we only used one setter. This year, for the first time since we’ve been here, we have the setting talent and depth to run a 6-2 offense, where we would use two setters and have three front row hitters at all times. A lot of factors go into that decision and it takes the right personnel, but in terms of setting talent alone, this is as close as we’ve been - which is the number one factor. Emily Sweet returns with a year of experience as the full-time starter last season. We were very pleased with Sweet’s performance last year and felt as though she was on the cusp of becoming an allconference type of player. The three things that make Sweet a special player in our conference are 1.) She has the ability to “better” the ball in bad situations, 2.) She is a strong defensive player that we can put in a position to feature and take advantage of her abilities and 3.) She’s gifted to the level that the sets she produces for our players are all very “hittable”. To the novice volleyball fan, this is tough to see because all setting can sometimes look the same, but to experienced coaches and players, this is a gift and very recognizable. As far as Kaitlyn Brooks is concerned, we couldn’t be more thrilled with her addition to the program. Kaitlyn will walk in the door as one of our best athletes in the program and is fresh off a great club season that concluded with her being named All-American at USA Volleyball’s Junior National Championships. She’s a dynamic athlete with tremendous speed and quickness. On top of that, she’s a great competitor and an extremely hard worker. The thing about Kaitlyn that we hear from her coaches is that she always finds a way. In watching her play already, I’m not surprised. Position: Outside Hitter
Kelly Jimenez has a full season as a starter on the outside under her belt and is coming off arguably the best spring season of any of our players. She became much, much better out of system and of the four, probably has the strongest arm and the most “pop” on the ball. Additionally, her ball control skills (passing and defense) made a huge jump and she became one of our most reliable passers this past spring. Her serve receive has great range and she has natural platform skills that many take years to develop. Caiti O’Connell redshirted last season with one of her main goals being to add strength and mass. We’re excited that while she did a great job in the weight room, she also developed her skills on the floor as well. It will be interesting because Caiti is a different kind of player than Kelly and Stacey. She’s bigger and has the potential to be more physical as an attacker and a blocker. While we were a strong defensive team last year, we struggled at times against more physical teams to terminate and block at their level. Caiti has the potential to be a player that can provide that for us. Nicole Hajka is an option for us on the outside as well. She’s more comfortable and productive on the right-side, but is such a good athlete and now with three years of college experience, we wouldn’t be afraid to see what she could do out there. Position: Middle Blocker Players: Vanessa Coleman, Glynna Johnson, Amanda Kunz
Without a doubt, this is the area of our program that has been upgraded the most from last season. We now have the ability to be more physical at the position, as well as adding quality depth to raise the competition level and protect ourselves from injury. One thing we are sure of is that we’ll be starting at least one freshman at this position, so there will be some adjustments to be made for having some inexperience on the floor, but it’s not like we didn’t have that all last Players: Nicole Hajka, Stacey DiFrancesco, Kelly Jimenez, Caiti season. O’Connell Vanessa Coleman returns after being a full-time starter last sea This will be a season-long battle with some very good options for son. Vanessa had some great moments last year as someone that was us. I’m guessing that we will see some different combinations and still “learning on the job” at this level. The thing we love about Vanessa perhaps even be changing things depending on our matchup or who’s is that while she may be a little bit undersized at the position, she is had the best week or two of practice. a dynamic athlete that has great speed. That speed allows her to be a Stacey DiFrancesco was a kill away from tying for the SLC lead in solid blocker and should also help her become a great weapon for us kills per set last season. She’s also a great competitor that wants the ball At 6’3”, Glynna Johnson brings both size and versatility to our in crucial situations. One of the things we asked of Stacey this offsea- program. We envision her as a middle to start her career, but she has son was to work to reduce her hitting errors to help her to become a the ability to play on either pin as an outside or a right-side. Competition Looms At Several Positions
floor for us, this is one of the players that can do that for us. Amanda Kunz is another player that will bring some physicality, but also possesses some “sneaky” speed. She’s almost kind of a mix of Vanessa and Glynna. At 6’1”, she again allows us to put a bigger lineup on the floor. I would say that right now, her strength would be her blocking. Like a lot of our players, Amanda has great length, which we believe will lead to her being a solid offensive option as well. She plays and contacts the ball at a high point, so the tools are there for her to grow offensively and we’ve successfully trained a good number of athletes like her. Position: Opposite/Right-side Players: Nicole Hajka, Caiti O’Connell, Mackenzie Neely
Just like our other positions, this spot also becomes a great battle with multiple options for us. Options that we did not have last season. Depending on the type of offense we run (5-1 or 6-2), we will have one or two right-side hitters playing for us. Nicole Hajka returns as last season’s starter and our only senior. While Nicole is an option for us on the outside, she is more comfortable, more confident and a better player on the right-side. By far our best athlete on the team, Nicole had a couple stretches last season where she was our most productive and efficient hitter. She had a really good spring and looked especially good in our spring competitions. One of the comments I made to Nicole at one point this spring is that I feel like we don’t really need to pay a lot of attention to her anymore - meaning that she knows everything that is expected and is in control of her game at this point in her career. Overall, she has become a more consistent player. Mackenzie Neely moves from the middle to the right-side this year, which is her best position and what we envisioned her role to be when we recruited her. Last season, she played middle out of necessity for us and did an admirable job. She led our team in hitting efficiency and is just a very good volleyball player. Mackenzie is gifted with probably the best arm I’ve ever coached in my 17 seasons of coaching collegiate volleyball and she’s a very competitive player. Additionally, I would say that of the three options we have here, Mackenzie is probably our best and most physical blocker. I know that she is looking forward to the full-time position switch. Caiti O’Connell proved to be a right-side option for us this past spring. As a redshirt last fall, a lot of Caiti’s time was on the second side filling in both on the left and the right. While our original vision of Caiti in the recruiting process was on the outside, she’s shown some versatility and has become part of our right-side conversations as well. This versatility will improve her ability to get on the floor and will
be a great asset to us as we build our offensive system around our strengths. Position: Libero Players: Jessica Guttierrez, Keelie Arneson, Tamara Hanna, Emily Johnson
This group will produce not only our starting libero, but also at least one regular defensive specialist, if not two. We’ve got a lot of talent to choose from and this has the potential to be a pretty fluid area. Jessica Guttierrez knows our back court system better than the rest of this group at the moment and is one of the reasons she earned a lot of playing time last year in the right back position. It’s not surprising after two full years in the program. She plays with a lot of effort and desire with little regard for her own health. Those are all qualities that become contagious for a team and set the right tone for our program. Keelie Arneson was our starting libero for most of the season last year. She is still just scratching the surface of her abilities as a relative newcomer to the position after transitioning from being an All-State setter during her prep career. Keelie set a school record for digs in a season last year - quite an accomplishment for someone so new to the position. The two things that stand out about Keelie are her speed and defensive range. This spring, her serve receive was a major focus. We had her passing half the floor with very encouraging results. Tamara Hanna, despite varying freak injuries last fall, played in half of our matches and gained some great experience. She’s another player at this position that brings great speed and a fearlessness that all great defensive players have. Tam had a good spring season and we essentially split time at the libero position between her and Keelie, and she performed at a very high level. Emily Johnson was most impactful last season in a serving specialist role. However, she trained with our defensive players this past spring when she wasn’t setting and did a really nice job. EJ has a great first step and is just a very good volleyball player, so we expect her to be right in the mix for a DS spot. Her serve is the best on the team, so it becomes a weapon that we can also utilize. Kaitlyn Brooks, outside of being a talented setter, is also an excellent defensive player. She’s very similar to Keelie Arneson in the type of athlete she is - extremely quick and a great first step. Kaitlyn was also being recruited by other schools with the intention of converting her into a libero - just as we did with Keelie. Kaitlyn’s primary role with us will be as a setter, but will also be given every opportunity to train with our ball control players and earn a role in a defensive capacity if she’s not setting.

Northwestern State Volleyball Co-Head Coach
Hugh Hernesman 3rd Season at NSU • 6th Season overall University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (1995)
In just his third season, Hugh Hernesman has already re-built the Northwestern State volleyball program from scratch. Bringing in a class of nine freshmen last season, he and his wife Stephanie coached NSU to its first Southland Conference Tournament appearance in three years and improved its conference win total by two matches from 2010. His 2011 recruiting class was regarded as the strongest in the conference, as he brought in All-State athletes who played at prestigious high-end volleyball clubs. Two of his recruits, Keelie Arneson and Stacey DiFrancesco, earned All-Louisiana First-Team accolades in their very first year in the program. Additionally, DiFrancesco became the first Lady Demon to win Southland Conference Freshman of the Year in program history and also made it on the All-Conference Second-Team. The NSU volleyball program earned national attention last season on Sept. 15, 2011 when Hugh Hernesman they snapped Central Arkansas’ 31-match home winning-streak. It was the second longest acEducation tive streak in the nation, and NSU needed just four sets to break it. The Lady Demons had not • Univ. of Wisconsin-Whitewater previously defeated UCA since 2006, and it was the first time they had ever done it on the road. The Hernesman’s have made NSU one of the most elite volleyball programs in Louisiana. The Bachelor’s in Education, 1995 Lady Demons posted an impressive 7-1 record against Louisiana opponents last season, includ • Univ. of Wisconsin-Whitewater ing wins over Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, Southeastern Louisiana (twice) and Nicholls State Master’s in H&HP, 2000 (twice). In 2010, NSU had one of the biggest turnarounds in the nation with 10 more wins than the Coaching Experience previous season. The turnaround had to do with both the talent and the competitiveness which • 2002-2004 the coaches brought into a program that hasn’t seen a winning season since 1987. Milwaukee Sting Volleyball Club Hernesman arrived at NSU after serving two seasons as the top assistant coach and recruit • 1994-2004 ing coordinator at Ball State and helped coach the 2008 and 2009 teams to the Mid-American Head Coach, Wisc.-Whitewater Conference Tournament, where the Cardinals lost to the eventual champions both seasons. Men’s Club In three years, they coached two All-MAC performers as well as developed two players that • 1995-2004 were named to the 2008 All-MAC Freshman team. They were also a major factor in boasting Ball Assistant Coach, Wisc.-Whitewater State’s RPI from No. 254 in their first season in 2007, to No. 50 in his last year. Northwestern State Volleyball Assistant Coach
Allison Wack
1st Season at NSU • Wisconsin (2012) After
an incredible four-year playing career at the University of Wisconsin, Allison Wack enters her first year as assistant coach for the Northwestern State volleyball program. A three-time All-Big Ten Academic winner, the Salem, Wisconsin native led the Badgers in kills per set (2.96 k/s) and service aces (0.26 sa/s) as a senior in 2010. She tallied 14 career double-doubles and won Big Ten Player of the Week on Oct. 25, 2010 after slamming career marks of 25 kills at Iowa and 21 kills at Minnesota. Wack led the team in kills in 10 matches as a senior and started 28 times. During the 2007 campaign, Wack was a part of a Badger team that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament and finished the regular season 26-5 overall and 17-3 in conference. Wack tallied a .429 hitting percentage in the match to
go along with her five digs. “Having been a three-year starter at Wisconsin, Allison brings a level of playing experience that will be invaluable to our players and program. She played in the Big Ten, which is one of the strongest conferences in the nation, and also in the NCAA Tournament.” said co-head coach Hugh Hernesman. “Wisconsin head coach Pete Waite and his staff are very well respected in the coaching community, and we know Allison will bring new perspectives on training and systems for our program.” As a junior in 2009, she ranked second on the team in kills (2.30 k/s) and registered double-figure kills in 11 matches. In high school, Wack earned 2006-07 Gatorade Player of the Year and was a four-time Wisconsin All-State winner at Westosha Central HS. She won National High School Freshman of the Year in 2003 and earned Wisconsin State All-Tournament team accolades three times. Furthermore, Wack won 2007 Holy Rosary Co-Female Athlete of the Year honors and guided Westosha Central to three state championships. She played club for the Milwaukee Sting Volleyball Club and played a key role on a team that won the 2004 Junior Olympic 16-Open title. Wack grew up in a tremendous volleyball family. She is the sister of former Wisconsin libero Jocelyn Wack, who set the Wisconsin career record for digs. The two played together in 2007 during Jocelyn’s senior season, while Allison was a freshman. Older brother, Nate Wack, played volleyball at UC Santa Barbara from 2001-04. Additionally, their aunt, Darla Wack, played volleyball and basketball at UW-Milwaukee from 1982-85 and is a member of the UWM Hall of Fame. “We’ve known Allison since she was 14 years old and are thrilled she’s decided to join our program as an assistant coach. She comes from a family of outstanding volleyball players and also from a family of great values. She’ll be a tremendous asset to our program not only as a coach and someone for our players to look up to, but also as a person whose character is just as strong as her volleyball talents,” Hernesman said. The daughter of Marty and Michelle Wack, Allison graduated from Wisconsin in 2012 with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies. She will be studying toward a Master’s degree in Sports Administration at NSU.

Northwestern State Volleyball The Southland Conference 2011 Final Standings
In an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions. What began as a small gathering of college administrators more than 45 years ago, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 12 member universities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, that included current members Lamar University (then Lamar State College of Technology) and the University of Texas at Arlington (then Arlington State College), the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its fifth decade of existence. On July 1, 2012, the Southland Conference commemorated another milestone as the league added another member in Oral Roberts University to tap into the Oklahoma market. The addition of the University of Central Arkansas and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in 2006 expanded the Southland into the Little Rock metro area and into the eighth largest city in Texas. Central Arkansas and A&M-Corpus Christi enhanced the Southland Conference in innumerable ways, including athletic and academic successes, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support and media coverage. In addition to its three newest members, the Southland Conference lineup also consists of Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, and Stephen F. Austin University. Houston Baptist University is also scheduled to join in July of 2013. All told, the revised membership of the Southland encompasses more than 180,000 current students and an alumni base of approximately 920,000. Famous alums from Southland Conference schools include former President Lyndon B. Johnson (Texas State), former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), retired U.S. Central Command General Tommy Franks (UT Arlington), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), country music star George Strait (Texas State), Major League Baseball stars Hunter Pence (UT Arlington), Kevin Millar (Lamar) and Ben Broussard (McNeese State), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas) and actor Lou Diamond Phillips (UT Arlington). The cities of the Southland are diverse and progressive, ranging from international business and cultural centers such as the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, San Antonio and the New Orleans area, to the historical cities of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Natchitoches, La., to the home of the modern oil boom, Beaumont, Texas, to the unique Cajun French cultures found in the Louisiana cities of Thibodaux and Lake Charles. Southland Conference institutions also draw large numbers of students from the metropolitan areas of Houston, Little Rock, Baton Rouge, Austin, and Shreveport. The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball.

Dr. Randall J. Webb Northwestern State President
Dr. Randall J. Webb stated when he became Northwestern State U N I V E R S I T Y A D M I N I S T R AT I O N University’s 17th president in July of 1996 that his primary objective President: would be to help make his Alma Mater the best institution it could be. It is apparent after 15 years that Webb is achieving that admirable goal. . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dr. Randall J. Webb Enrollment has reached record levels during Webb’s tenure as Provost & Vice President for Academic and president and exceeded 10,500 for the first time in history in the fall Student Affairs: of 2004. Webb has also been at the forefront in recent years of moving . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dr. Lisa Abney the university toward higher admission standards, which has resulted Vice President for External Affairs: in some enrollment declines but in the enrollment of students with . . . . . . . . . . . . . Jerry Pierce greater academic potential and aptitude. Retention has increased at the university, the average ACT score of students has gone up, and Vice President for Business Affairs: high school student leaders are enrolling in Northwestern in record numbers. There has been a . . . . . . . . . . . . . Carl Jones substantial increase in the number of high school valedictorians and salutatorians among first-time Vice President for University Affairs: . . . . . . . . . . . . . Marcus Jones freshmen at the university. External funding for NSU has also increased dramatically under Webb’s leadership. In the first Vice President for Technology, Research and capital campaign in its history, the university received $32.7 million to far exceed its goal of $18.84 Economic Development: million. That funding included the establishment of numerous endowed chairs and professorships . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dr. Darlene Williams to enhance academic programs at the university. In addition to the private funding, Northwestern has received more grant monies in recent years from state and federal agencies and private founda- Executive Assistant to the President: . . . . . . . . . . . . . Robert Crew tions than at any time since its founding in 1884. Webb has also expanded the university’s outreach by spearheading the development at NSU of the largest electronic education and distance learning network of any university in Louisiana. NSU offers courses and degree programs to students across the nation and world through Internet and compressed video. Millions of dollars have been obtained during Webb’s presidency for new and renovated facilities. A new $6.9 million Wellness, Recreation and Activity Center opened on the campus in 2005; and Morrison Hall, the Family and Consumer Sciences Building, and Williamson Hall have been completely renovated and restored. A new Student Services Center on the site of the former West Caspari Hall will be complete early next year. Over $32 million in construction by a private company has added two modified residence halls to the campus in recent years. Funding has also been obtained to rebuild the East Caspari Hall and replace the underground electrical distribution system. Northwestern academic programs and athletic teams continue to receive positive national recognition. The Computer Information Systems program, for example, won five consecutive national championships in academic competition in systems analysis, and the NSU men’s basketball team defeated Iowa in the NCAA national championship tournament. A former center on the Northwestern football team, Webb is an avid supporter of the university’s athletic programs and has held positions of leadership at the national level in intercollegiate athletics. He has served as chair of the board of directors of the Southland Conference and has been a member of the prestigious NCAA Executive Council and the NCAA Division I Board of Directors that oversee all major policy decisions by the governing body for major college sports. He currently serves as the Southland Conference representative on the NCAA Presidential Advisory Group. A 1965 graduate of Northwestern in mathematics and business education, Webb earned a master of science degree in mathematics from NSU in 1966. He received a doctorate in education from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1971 with a concentration in mathematics and research. Webb was a member of the faculty of Longwood College in Farmville, Va, from 1966 until 1974. He served as Director of Higher Education and Teacher Certification in the Louisiana Department of Education from 1974 through 1976. He moved to Southeastern Louisiana University in 1976 and in 13 years there held positions as director of institutional research, EEO officer, registrar and member of the mathematics faculty. He became Dean of Instruction and Graduate Studies and professor of mathematics at Northwestern in 1989. In that position, he was responsible for campuswide policy development, planning, advancement, and review of both graduate and undergraduate programs. While Webb was in that position, graduate enrollment increased by 35 percent, and internal funding for faculty research increased by 200 percent. As dean, Webb proposed the concept for NSU’s successful Freshman Connection Program and served as a member of the writing team for a grant proposal that resulted in a five year, $1.7 million Title III grant to improve student retention. He also chaired the steering committee for NSU’s Self Study for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He has been active in the community as a member of the board of directors of the Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches, the Natchitoches Historic Foundation, the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Society, Rotary Club, and the First Baptist Church. Webb and his wife Brenda have two daughters, both honor graduates of Northwestern. Jerry Pierce
Vice President • External Affairs Jerry Pierce is the Cal Ripken of the Northwestern State athletic program. Day after day, year after year, Pierce is in the lineup, fielding his position with aplomb, and delivering at the plate, knocking a ball out of the park from time to time but always taking an understated profile, seeing himself as a role player. Beginning his 47th year on the university’s staff, Pierce’s impact on NSU and the city of Natchitoches can’t be measured as easily as Ripkin’s Baseball Hall of Fame statistics, but they are equally indelible. He begins his 21st year as vice president of external affairs at Northwestern. A significant aspect of his job is oversight of intercollegiate athletics. Pierce works closely with athletic director Greg Burke and all NSU coaches and staff members to keep Northwestern athletics competing at a championship level week after week, month after month and year after year. Pierce is an avid tennis player who has been a member of USTA teams that have won more than a dozen state championships, five regional titles and one national championship. Well before moving into the executive position, Pierce NSU Athletic Council had already served his alma mater, adopted hometown and Jody Biscoe (Chair) state with distinction. In his role as vice president, he oversees Dion Boyett university operations in athletics, alumni and development, public and media relations and assists President Dr. Randall J. Lyn Christophe Webb in governmental affairs activities. Many of those duties Dwight Epperson were his since the 1970s as he worked under four previous Kelee Grimes (Student) presidents as Northwestern advanced from NAIA to NCAA Marcus Jones College Division to NCAA Division I athletic status in 1977. A 1961 graduate of Northwestern, Pierce served as trainer Jennifer Kelly for the Demon football team during his college years, workMelissa Kelly ing closely with legendary coach Jack Clayton. After earning Dr. Michael Land his journalism degree, Pierce went to work for the New Orleans Times Picayune, serving as a reporter and editor. He was Michelle Pichon named executive sports editor at the age of 24. Kristi Simms In 1965, he chose to raise his two sons in Natchitoches and Mark Swanstrom returned to NSU as sports information director. He was proEd Ward moted to news bureau director two years later and assumed Will Watson (Student) additional responsibilities in athletics, alumni affairs and other areas through the years. He founded, in 1972, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Ex-Officio Members facility in Prather Coliseum on the NSU campus, providing Greg Burke a home for an entity created in 1958. He established annual induction activities that remain in place nearly four decades Carrie Crowell later, and served as director of the Hall for 19 years until his Dustin Eubanks promotion to vice president forced him to step aside from the Dr. Patrice Moulton volunteer post. He helped guide Northwestern into three athletic conferDr. Vicki Parrish ences (Trans America, 1979; Gulf Star, 1983; Southland, 1987) Jerry Pierce and NCAA Division I status in 1977. He is a past president of the Southland and has served the conference through other offices and committee positions. In 1994, he was named one of Louisiana’s 20 most influential sports figures by the Times-Picayune. Also on the list were New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, LSU athletic director Joe Dean and basketball coach Dale Brown, and Grambling football coaching legend Eddie Robinson. His salesmanship and managerial skills were instrumental in convincing Tri-Star Productions to film the 1989 smash hit movie Steel Magnolias, with an all-star cast including Julia Roberts, Sally Field and Dylan McDermott in Natchitoches and on the NSU campus. The movie’s impact on tourism in Natchitoches continues to resonate more than two decades later. Pierce is regarded as one of the most effective legislative liaisons for Louisiana’s higher education system. He is also a popular after dinner speaker and master of ceremonies who has spoken at hundreds of events since 1965. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Pierce is a member of the Journalism Department faculty. He is the author of one book and editor of two others and has written thousands of editorials, columns, features and other articles for newspapers and magazines. Pierce and his wife Regina, a teacher, live on Cane River Lake in Natchitoches. He has two sons, Randy and Rick, both NSU graduates; and three grandchildren, twins Evan and

Greg Burke
Director of Athletics The Burke File
AGE: 54 (Born Oct. 22, 1956) • HOMETOWN: Alliance, Ohio • HIGH SCHOOL: Marlington ’74 • COLLEGE: Mt. Union ’78 (cum laude) POSTGRADUATE: Kent State ’86 • BEFORE HE WAS A.D.: Sports writer, Alliance (Ohio) Review, 1972-78; director of news and sports information, Hiram (Ohio) College (1978-85); administrative intern, NSU athletics, 1985-86; director, NSU Athletic Association, 1986-92; director of athletic development, University of Akron, 1992-96. BIG FAN OF: Cleveland Browns, Indians and Cavaliers • INTERESTS: Working out, watching ESPN and VH1 Classic, family outings.
At the outset of his 17th year as director of athletics at Northwestern State, Greg Burke has received national acclaim for the job he’s done in his adopted hometown. Burke has been athletics director at Northwestern since Aug. 29, 1996, when his first day included speaking at the annual NSU/Independence Bowl Kickoff Luncheon. Burke is the longest serving AD at any Louisiana institution. He has steered NSU athletics to many of its greatest accomplishments while overseeing a program that has fielded championship caliber teams in nearly all of the school’s NCAA Division I sports. Last year, he was included among 29 winners of the Under Amour AD of the Year Award presented by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). He was also among four winners chosen to be involved in a Street and Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal panel discussion on current Division I athletics issues. Joining NSU’s Burke were Purdue’s Morgan Burke (no relation), Samford’s Bob Roller and Lee Fowler of North Carolina State, with the transcript of their discussion distributed to national media by the Sports Business Daily. Burke just completed a term as the 2010-11 president of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association. Burke’s 15 years as athletic director include 32 Southland Conference regular-season or tournament championships, 54 All-American and Academic All-American student athletes, and three U.S. Olympic competitors. Seventeen NSU teams have taken part in NCAA or WNIT postseason competition. Under his guidance, Northwestern State has led all 13 public institutions in Louisiana, and all 12 Southland Conference institutions, in the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate and Graduation Success Rate reports. The school’s athletic facilities have undergone nearly $7 million in improvements in the past four years. NSU in 2004-05 became the first (and remains the only) Southland Conference member in the league’s five decades of history to sweep football, men’s basketball and baseball championships in the same athletic year. It’s been done only once in Southeastern Conference history, by Alabama in 1933-34, and only four times in Big Ten Conference history, the last time by Michigan State in 1979-80. Those accomplishments have come with one of the more modest athletic budgets in the state and conference. Burke’s management skill and fundraising ability have been pivotal. Burke generated a $2 million series of sponsorships for new scoreboards installed for 2008-09 at all NSU athletic venues and spearheaded the $700,000 Second Century Circle fencing project for athletic venues. Burke has displayed a remarkable ability to hire dynamic head coaches, including several whose success at Northwestern State has propelled them to national prominence in subsequent positions. Some of his best hires remain on staff at NSU. Two, basketball’s Mike McConathy and soccer’s Jimmy Mitchell, guided Northwestern in NCAA Tournament play in their second seasons and have been back to postseason since. NSU’s 2006 basketball team scored one of the most memorable upsets in the history of March Madness, coming from 17 down to stun No. 15-ranked Iowa 64-63. Burke has selected head coaches who have subsequently been hired by Alabama, Florida, Missouri, New Mexico, Kentucky, Virginia, Mississippi State and Wichita State. From his first day on the job, Burke has stressed the importance of having a balanced athletic program. To that end, tremendous competitive strides have been made in women’s athletics under his guidance. The NSU soccer program was the first one in Louisiana ever to reach the NCAA Tournament and remains the only one with multiple appearances. Volleyball set attendance records and has made its best-ever showings in conference play in recent years. In softball, NSU posted the nation’s most improved win total in 2010 regular-season play under second-year coach Donald Pickett, and moved among league contenders in 2011. The Lady Demons joined Stanford as the only women’s tennis programs in the country in 2010 with only one regular-season loss, while sweeping Southland regular-season and tournament titles and making a first-ever NCAA Team Tournament appearance. While on-field success by Demon and Lady Demon teams has been a source of pride for NSU supporters, Burke is equally proud of the tone which has been set within the NSU athletic program as it relates to academic achievement and community service. The academic accomplishments are reflected annually in the NCAA’s APR and GSR studies. Community service by NSU student-athletes, coaches and staff more than doubled to over 5,000 hours in 2009-10 and remained at that level in 2010-11. Burke spearheaded the adoption of the slogan “Great Tradition, Brighter Future” for NSU Athletics, and the creation of NSU Athletics “Cornerstones” for student-athletes: “Academic Achievement, Personal Responsibility, Competitive Success … Every Minute, Every Hour, Every Day!” In 2005, Burke was one of three recipients of the All-America Football Foundation’s Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award and that same year, was also tabbed as one of two Natchitoches Parish Cenla Newsmakers of 2005 by the Alexandria Town Talk newspaper’s editorial staff. He received the 2006 “Outstanding Alumni Award” from his alma mater, Marlington High School in Alliance, Ohio, recognizing his community service and professional achievements. Burke became one of only 21 alumni honored since the award was instituted in 1982. In June 2006, he was a featured speaker and panelist at the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors convention in New Orleans, addressing members of the College Athletic Business Managers of America and also participating in a panel discussion of “Fundraising from an Athletic Director’s Perspective” speaking to the National Association of Athletic Development Directors. Since 2007, Burke has been a member of the prestigious NCAA Championships/Sports Management Cabinet, a 49-person panel which makes recommendations to the NCAA Board of Directors on key issues facing Division I athletics. He previously served a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee (1999-2002) and concurrently served a term on the eight-member NCAA FCS Committee that administers the national playoffs. Since his committee term expired, Burke has served as a site supervisor for Football Championship Subdivision playoff games across the nation and he is regarded as one of the country’s premiere advocates of FCS football. In 2004, NSU received the highest possible rating, “fully certified,” from the National Collegiate Athletic Association, affirming that Northwestern operates its athletic program in substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the NCAA Division I membership. Burke is a past president of the Natchitoches Kiwanis Club and remains active in that civic group. He has also been part of the steering committee for the Natchitoches Christmas Festival and is a former president of the Natchitoches Area Jaycees. He is involved with the American Heart Association and was 2010 March of Dimes chairman locally. He and his wife, Susu, is a Natchitoches native, NSU graduate and an elementary teacher. Their 17-year-old daughter, Catherine, is captain of the St. Mary’s High School cheerleading squad, in addition to being a point guard on the basketball team and a member of the tennis Greg Burke with wife, Susu, and daughter, Catherine. team.
