Manifesto

La Rivoluzione

The central theme of is the appreciation for the moments of transition. Living, learning and working are integrated; participants will explore the intersection between these three aspects, challenging traditional social and cultural barriers. Education and the real world are mutually inclusive and don’t have to be disconnected.

00

01 We want to investigate and begin to understand this relationship through a programme of itinerant workshops around Italy which will explore and expand this idea of social creativity. The central motto of these workshops is:

delle Seppie Don’t make products but processes.

Manifesto

Manifesto The proposed workshops offer an experience which engages and explores the geographical, social, and cultural context in which they take place. Interdisciplinary practice between experts from different backgrounds will work with students with different interests. Through the examination of artistic expressions beyond the scope of the traditional academy, this work will encourage

a NEW commitment towards the world.

Blurring the boundaries

between ‘student’ and ‘teacher’. This radical vision of a new pedagogy aims to challenge the limitations imposed by society, the current culture and history; it proposes theoretical and architectural structures that later will be filled with content, initiating and shaping a new think-tank. This approach can find fertile ground in the current Italian context where we are rooted.

a place, is the primary and most effective form of preservation; here is where the design activities will play their explorative role, finding the balance between use and conservation.

When & Where

Brief: Theme:

The workshop wants to explore a new perspective on the natural landscapes of inland beaches, more and more popular amongst locals and tourists, but rarely ever considered in their complexity, or integrated into the local economic, environmental and cultural policies, resulting in a damaging lack of stewardship.

Goals:

The result of the workshop would be an

INTERVENTIon awAREnEss OF

for what is the potential of these places, and more generally of the valley in question: condition that can easily be reflected throughout the Parma region, and the wider mountain sector.

The workshop is carried out in collaboration with the Bardi municipality, the Centro Studi Valceno and the Castello di Bardi.

Process

Limits:

The workshop aims to be respectful of the legal and environmental policies of the rivers domain which is public land. The resulting ‘product’ will be a single or series of landscape intervention, of a temporary nature, allowing to be easily cleared from site before the flooding season.

Context:

Communication with the wider context will come in the form of figures from the local and Italian panorama, they will be offering their expertise through different fields, enriching the cultural background, and widening the operational horizon.

Skills:

Typical building and artisan’s techniques of the area, risking getting lost, as stone cutting and weaving wood will be introduced from local experts, offering a first approach to the material pallet that will characterise the workshop.

Workshop 01

Technical Zzzzz:

The participants will be staying in the Bardi castle, a monumental complex firstly recorded in 898 A.D. overlooking the river and the valley; not necessarily a luxurious experience but surely a unique one as this isn’t formally open for public overnight visits.

Slurp:

Meals will be arranged with local cafes and restaurant, offering typical products from the Parma area and the mountains we’re based in.

Brrrr:

The weather given the time of the year is expected to be hot and dry, allowing to enjoy a god swim in the river too; the mountain location anyway sees fresh and breezy evenings.

Yippee:

Ryanair operates on Parma with flights from London Stansted; surrounding airports are Bologna, Milano Bergamo and Genova, from which Parma can be reached by train (further logistics to be confirmed).

Workshop 02 In Belmonte Calabro (South of Italy) there are two actors and farmers (Stefano and Paola) who live in a former 17Thc. convent. This old convent is now used for culinary and theatrical events. The ex-convent sits within a beautiful and luscious garden, the surrounding area is very verdant and nearby there is Belmonte Calabro village which is a “jewel” nestled in the mountains, only 15 min from the sea.

yourself to a new type of intervention and/or collaboration that could be based on light, feelings, clothes, acting and whatever else participants want to bring to the site. The ideas and relationships will be born with the aid of a good meal and a good wine, however the making part of the workshop is also very important in order to leave an output which should augment the site.

When & Where

Brief: Theme:

These characteristics are the backdrop of this proposed workshop which aims to bring together nature, art, architecture, food, music, theatre, agriculture and social exchange.

Context:

Participants are encouraged to develop their ideas and relationships around a typical long communal table which is a symbol of the nun’s way of living but it is also a fundamental part of the Calabrian tradition where eating can become a celebration and sharing of moments and ideas.

Goals:

By the end of the week period participants will have created some type of interventions that could take artistic, architectural

The interaction between students from different study background, tutors and experts from different fields and the people living in the area will be the fuel for these interventions to be realized.

Spirit:

17 Zzzzz:

The participants will be staying either in the convent or in the “Albergo Diffuso” which is formed of ancient houses, a few meters apart from each other, which have been renovated in order to give the people staying there a full experience of the local area.

Slurp:

Meals will be provided by the convent, offering typical products made in Calabria.

Brrrr:

The middle of July is high summer which will allow participants to enjoy the sea but the elevated position of the convent and the village means that the air will be fresh and cool mostly during evenings.

→ Theatrical FORM. Ryanair flies to Lamezia Terme airport where participants will be picked up from and taken to their accommodation. Another close airport is Naples and from there participants can take a train to Paola train station where they will be picked up from.

deep respect of the natural and delicate environment is ingrained in the psyche of Operazione Arcevia and aims to help the participants to engage quick but considered solutions, yet a more creative freedom within construction.

When & Where

Brief:

Spirit:

Research All activities have previously undertaken in Riserva Privata San Settimio deal with all expressions of visual contemporary architecture and arts: sculpture, pavilions, land art, music, film and photography. The project will continue to engage with all of these disciplines and welcome new approaches to the context. This will be starting point for the summer workshop

To explore the place and use it for inspiration and innovation.

Theme:

Started more than 30 years ago by Italo Bartoletti, Operazione Arcevia had the goal to promote contemporary arts creating, in the Marche region inland, a place where art is born: a thought factory and creativity lab. Two are the core concepts from the original project and the basis of the manifesto for the future of the project:

20

History:

& Inter — cultural exchange A retreat, and a moment of reflection, a place where artists can live, meet, know each other, and compare their experiences, through conversations and collaboration towards the creation of new works and approaches.

21

Workshop 02

Brief: Context:

The participants will be asked to work in teams on a structure that will engage and emphasize the natural and rural beauty of the surrounding area. In the week the process and the communications between the participants will be a key part of the workshop. The participants will learn a new ways of seeing, and practice new ways of representation with an emphasis on, and all things around, the process of making.

The material palette is that of ‘found’ materials on site, such timber sourced from the local woodlands, soil/clay and stone from several ancient quarry sites. Other materials if needed are supplied by merchants of the local area.

23 Zzzzz:

The participants will be staying in the studios and apartments (with bathroom and kitchenette) of Riserva Privata San Settimio fully furnished and with all amenities located around the reserve, with close connection to the landscape, where the workshop activities will take place. The Reserve has a wide range of facilities which can be utilised.

Slurp:

Meals during the workshop period, (breakfast, lunch and dinner) will be prepared by the Reserve's on site restaurant which offers honest Italian dishes with a large focus on local produce.

The nearest airport is FALCONARA (Ancona about 50 km) where Ryanair operates. If travelling by car, from A24 drive towards PESCARA.
