LIGHTING DESIGN PORTFOLIO
I was born in Turin in 1992. Since childhood I used to play basketball, at the beginning here in my town, then I played in Turin and when I was only 16 years old I moved to Bologna and Biella to play basketball. Here I could find out and grow up my passion for drawing and architecture. At the end of high school, I came back home to start my university career at the Polytechnic of Turin. I enrolled to Architecture in 2011 and closed my Bachelor Degree in 2014, so I started my Master Degree in Architecture for Sustainable Design.
24 July 1992
During my 5 years at Polytechnic I chose to study in deep the physic building in general, and in 2015 I started my walk towards the lighting

I’m analysing the interconnections between natural and artificial lighting
workshops and activities in and out the academy, and now I’m going do
for users’ benefit and comfort and the energy saving for customer. Over the Polytechnic there are other interests including travelling, visiting cities, landscape and nightscape photography and sport, like basketball and volleyball.

My first lighting experience was in 2015: the “Lighting Design” workshop of Polytechnic of Turin, by Prof. Chiara Aghemo. It was strictly linked with a restoration project of the Masino Castle, near Turin. It was the Real home of the first King of Italy, King Arduino d’Ivrea, in the 11th century. Now in FAI propriety, a national, not-for-profit trust. We designed the new illumination for many spaces: the internal stairs of a tower, the underground brick walls path, and the “Oleanders terrace”, one of the most important front of the Castle that is visible from the near highway.
“LIGHT UP THE GATE” CONTEST
within the “Lighting Design” Workshop Matteo Ficai | Matteo Quarta | Caterina Sguassero Masino - Jun ‘15
Within the “Lighting Design” workshop has been proposed a contest about the illumination of Castel’s gates. There were 5 gates to light up, each one for every mean entrance to the Castle. We chose the gate of the principle entrance to the Castle, contemplating also the parking railing, marked out by a sequence of columns until the gate. We thought an uplihgt illumination for the gate, as well as the railing’s column. Then, we have also lit the avenue to the entrance Castle with special luminaires recessed in the road

“POLITO IN LIGHT” CONTEST & WORKSHOP
Francesca Cabodi | Matteo Quarta Turin - Sep ‘15 - Jan ‘16
In collaboration with Luci d’Artista of the City of Turin, prof. C. Aghemo with a student team proposed a contest for the creation of a light art installation to place in the Court of honour of Valentino Castle. It was split in two steps: before there was the contest, where “Luci in cattedra” won. The second phase was the realization of the winning project after in team work. The final installation was composed of a central “tree” of white stretchy bands, lit up with UV lamps. Twelve cubes with wooden frame and opaline panels within which there were light source RGB surrounded the big “tree”.
“INTERIOR & LIGHTING DESIGN FOR RETAIL” WORKSHOP Matteo Quarta
Turin - Sep’ 16 - Oct ‘16
The “Interior and Lighting design for retail” workshop was proposed by prof. M. Vaudetti and C. Aghemo at Polytechnic of Turin. The first part of workshop we studied the window shop setting of the most important shops of the city. The second part was about the application of research on the case study: “Mondo fashion” in Turin. We had to restyle and relight two window shop, one in front of a pedestrian street, the other in front of a square and in a gallery. I thought two types of lighting system depending on the kind of goods and clothes exposed. The first window, more precious and elegant it was lit by only white spot light. The second one, more casual, in day-time was like the first window, but in night-time, became blue, lit by RGB system to be recognizable by the passer-by in the square in front of the shop and along the gallery.
SOCIAL LIGHTSCAPE WORKSHOP SERIES
Carolina Campi | Alessandro Maestrini Margherita Pane | Matteo Quarta Rome - Apr ‘17
The “Social Lightscape workshop was hosted by Morandi Centre public housing in Tor Sapienza, Rome. It was organized by the LSE of London in collaboration with the University Rome3 and iGuzzini. It was managed by A. Goni and M. Frascarolo from Rome and D. Slater and E. Bordonaro from London. The main group was divided in smaller groups to analyse more areas of the centre. The first step was a social research on the site, analyse the data and transform the findings in a creative lighting design solution. iGuzzini let us to test our design ideas with a real lighting mock-ups on two nights. The workshop culminated in a public presentation with institutional guests where students exposed their research projects and new lighting design ideas for Tor Sapienza.
MASTER THESIS “LIGHTING RETROFIT DESING IN INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS” Matteo Quarta
Grugliasco (TURIN) - (Jul ‘17)
The thesis aim is to explain the meaning of sustainable design in architecture through the lighting design. I analysed three different rooms within an industrial building: the canteen, the open space offices and the production premises. First of all, I measured the lighting as things

standed. Then I calculated the whole system with a digital model both the artificial and the natural lighting, to understand the present situation. I also evaluated the powers and the consumptions within each spaces. The conclusions of data analysis was a critical situation of natural lighting, caused by an insufficient windows area, and the level of illuminance in every spaces was lower than standard, because they were lit by fluorescent lamp, a low efficiency source system. The design criterions were improving the current situation light diversification for different visual task and reduction of energy consumption through a high level of efficiency lamps. I focused on visual comfort not only on work station, but also in informal spaces like canteen.
