Sustainable vision through self-care

DR MICHAEL KARPA

How’s your vision and eye health? You may have perfectly good eyesight but have all sorts of badness happening inside. Many people don’t realise they are losing vision until it’s too late. Our Ophthalmic Nurse looked after a patient who discovered she had glaucoma after she was hit by a car crossing the road! Similarly, those suffering from cataracts often don’t realise their natural lens is becoming cloudy until they finally go to their optometrist thinking they just need new glasses.

Sustainable vision through self-care involves adopting practices that maintain and enhance eye health over the long term, reducing the risk of vision problems and preserving visual acuity as we age. Central to this approach is a combination of good nutrition, protective measures, regular eye check-ups, and lifestyle adjustments.

A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly those found in green leafy vegetables, fish, nuts, and fruits, supports eye health. Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc have been shown to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. Staying hydrated also ensures that eyes remain well-lubricated and function optimally.

Protecting eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays by wearing sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats can prevent conditions such as cataracts and skin cancers on the lids and the eyes. Reducing screen time and practising the 2020-20 rule (taking a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet (6 metres) away every 20 minutes) helps alleviate eye strain and dry eyes. Remember to always wear those goggles when mowing, using the whipper snipper or power tools, or other risky activities.

Regular comprehensive eye examinations are crucial for early detection and management of conditions like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration. These exams allow for timely interventions that can preserve vision.

Lifestyle choices, including avoiding smoking and managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, also play a significant role in maintaining eye health. By integrating these self-care practices into daily routines, individuals can achieve sustainable vision and enjoy better eye health throughout their lives.
