Happy First Anniversary
Awards — the Icing on the Cake
As we enter our second year of publication what a privilege it is for Rebound Magazine to present its first annual Rebound Magazine Legends Awards. In this issue we celebrate two milestones — we enter our second year of publication while honoring our first round of award winners. It has been a fun ride getting here. It seems just like yesterday we were mailing out last year’s All-Star issue. Memories from August’s Legends Conference are still fresh in my mind. Throughout the past year I have been so lucky to work with an incredible team. First, hats off to the NBRPA team. That includes both the national and local leadership and the amazing members we have met along the way. I would also like to recognize the hard-working team at Rebound Magazine. Many of you already know Matt Fish from his playing days. As our editor, Matt puts in countless ten-hour days to assure that Rebound is truly valuable to its readers. You may not know Connie Wardman, our editor-in-chief, but she is truly dedicated to making your voice the voice of Rebound Magazine. In addition to the NBRPA team and Matt and Connie, I would also like to thank Barbara Harwell and NBRPA member Bernard Thompson. Barbara serves as our general manager, bringing her attention to detail to the business of producing Rebound Magazine. Bernard Thompson has been a loyal and key-contributor to our success since the early planning stages of the magazine. Before I go, I also want to thank our production team, led by Dara Fowler, and our writers, editors, proofers and printers who make my job so easy. So here’s to our first year together and to many more anniversaries to come! Thank you, everyone.
Welcome to the All-Star issue of Rebound Magazine. The NBA All-Star weekend is always a great way to showcase the players and their amazing basketball skills. In this issue of Rebound we proudly honor members of the NBRPA. These well-deserved accolades aren’t only for accomplishments on the court. They’re also to honor offthe-court work to improve our local-to-global communities. This work is done without any expectation of receiving awards — it’s because the awardees see it as the right thing to do. Rebound Magazine proudly recognizes these overachievers for the hard work they do for their important causes. Congratulations to all of you. Preparation to play as a pro is often lost on spectators, even some hardcore fans. Strategies, diets, weights, long practice sessions, long film sessions and long study sessions are all part of the preparation. When I played, game days were my favorite days. Game day meant an opportunity to prove that all your years of hard work and sacrifice would pay off by helping your team achieve a win. The reward was winning the game — knowing that you did everything in your power to help the team win. I rarely had a teammate who played the game for any other kind of award or reward; the real goal was for the final outcome — the victory. The awards for winning were the icing on the cake for all your hard work over the years, the time and energy you had invested. So we recognize that the Rebound Magazine awards are also the “icing on the cake” for the hard work of these honorees both on and off the court. To those of you receiving an award this year, enjoy celebrating your latest win. You deserve the icing AND the cake (enjoy eating it, too)!

BRPA Members: welcome to NBA All-Star 2013! As the biggest annual gathering of NBRPA members, this is a weekend to celebrate all that we accomplished together in 2012 — because of your support we find ourselves at an all-time high for dues-paying members, with an unprecedented roster of member benefits, programs and community initiatives. At the same time, we’d like to use this weekend to listen to our members, share ideas and make 2013 the best year ever for our Association. Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the National Basketball Retired Players Association which was founded in 1992 by Legends of Basketball Dave Bing, Archie Clark, Dave Cowens, Oscar Robertson and the late Dave DeBusschere. The National Basketball Association (NBA) has helped support the NBRPA since its inception and that historic partnership will continue for years to come. In late 2012 the NBA and NBRPA jointly announced an extension and enhancement to the relationship, and details of our expanded partnership will be announced this All-Star Weekend alongside Commissioner David Stern and Commissioner-elect Adam Silver at NBA Jam Session. The NBRPA also remains closely tied to the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA). The NBPA renewed its financial support of our Association in 2012 and discussions are ongoing with Executive Director Billy Hunter about how to work in tandem to best serve our closely-related constituencies — after all, NBPA members of today will be NBRPA members of tomorrow. The NBRPA strives to take care of its own, helping former NBA, ABA and Harlem Globetrotters players transition into life after the game through a full menu of member programming. The NBRPA has awarded members and their families more than $1 million in educational funds through the Dave DeBusschere Scholarship Program and continues to raise funds in support of this cornerstone initiative. We offer comprehensive resources to assist our alumni with career development, continuing education, business and financial literacy, legal research and health & wellness (with many new programs on the horizon for 2013). Just as important is our dual mission to give back to the community through the good work of our Legends. Make no mistake, we are a service organization and our members show their philanthropic dedication time and again as goodwill ambassadors for the game. Working in conjunction with the NBA and NBPA, the NBRPA’s membership promotes basketball and enhances the sport’s image by building community relationships and fostering support for charitable activities and philanthropic events — both in the United States and abroad — with a connection to the game. Thank you NBRPA members for helping our Association grow and prosper. Enjoy All-Star 2013 and help us celebrate both where the NBRPA has been and where we are headed! Yours in basketball,

Moses Malone 2013 Rebound Magazine
LEGEND OF THE YEAR By Stefan Swiat
NBRPA Legend MOSES “BIG MO” MALONE was known as for his ability
A special thanks to our awards and selection partner, the Sports Financial Advisors Association (SFAA). www.sportsfinancial.org
to rebound throughout his career, part of the reason he has been named the 2013 Rebound Magazine Legend of the Year. But as an NBRPA member, it is also because of his contributions to his community and to the game of basketball during and after his professional playing career with the ABA and NBA. Now that his playing days have concluded, it’s no surprise that he helps others learn how to rebound in their lives. A Hall of Fame center whose career spanned 21 seasons, Malone retired as the third-leading rebounder and fifth-leading scorer in NBA history. For his efforts, he was honored during the 1996-97 season as a member of the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team. While fans today are accustomed to players like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett making the leap from high school directly to the pros, Malone was the one that actually pioneered the move. At the age of 19, the 6-10 Malone made the jump from Petersburg High School in Virginia to the Utah Stars of the ABA in 1974. As a rookie, he averaged 18.8 points a game and 14.6 rebounds on 57-percent shooting from the floor. His numbers would allow him to earn ABA All-Rookie Team honors in 1975 and become an ABA All-Star in 1976. After a two-year stint in the ABA, the NBA and ABA merged with Malone going to the Trail Blazers in the 1976 ABA Dispersal Draft. Without ever playing a second in Portland, he was traded to the Buffalo Braves where he played all of two games before being sent to Houston for two draft picks. Malone would spend six seasons in Houston, winning two NBA MVP awards, leading Houston to the 1981 NBA Finals, leading the league in rebounding during the 1978-79 season and breaking the league’s record for offensive rebounding in his first year as a Rocket. After entering the ABA as a power forward, Malone’s frame filled out and he eventually moved to the center position. Not as tall as other centers in his era, Malone utilized his strength, quickness and tenacity to become a force down low. A monster on the glass, he was the NBA's rebounding leader six times during a seven-year span, starting during the 1978-79 season and ending during the 1984-85 season.
Malone_CvrStory_Layout 1 2/4/13 3:33 PM Page 3
LEGEND OF THE YEAR Just as deadly as a scorer, he averaged more than 20 points per game for 11-straight years, utilizing a complete arsenal of post moves, a penchant for grabbing offensive rebounds and an unparalleled ability to get to the free throw line. But he also made his presence felt on the defensive end, earning a selection to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 1979. After being traded to the Sixers at the conclusion of his MVP 1981-82 season, his dynamic abilities on both the offensive and defensive ends would pay immediate dividends for Philadelphia. Malone would go on to win his third and final MVP trophy after leading the Sixers to a 65-17 record, an NBA title and a 12-1 record during the 1983 postseason. He would also go on to win NBA 1983 Finals MVP, become an All-Star for a sixth-straight time, make the All-NBA First Team and the NBA All-Defensive First Team, all while averaging 26 points and 15.8 rebounds a night throughout the playoffs. Malone would stay with Philadelphia for three more seasons, winning the rebounding title with averages of better than 13 boards per game in the next two campaigns and posting scoring averages of 22.7, 24.6 and 23.8 points a game, respectively.
Although his playing career has ended,
HIS EXCELLENCE HAS CONTINUED — Malone is now using his exceptional skills and abilities to help individuals and organizations in the Houston area and beyond... The 1984-85 campaign, which was his last with the Sixers, saw him become the first player in NBA history to lead the league in rebounding for five consecutive seasons. With his 13.1 a game average, he broke Wilt Chamberlain’s record of leading the NBA in boards for four-straight years, a mark that had stood since the 1960s. Malone’s career was remarkable because of its consistency. In 1978, which would’ve been Malone’s senior year in college had he attended, he would make the first of what would be 12 consecutive All-Star Game appearances. However, during the 1989-90 season Malone’s career would start to slowly decline. In his second season with the Hawks, he would finally snap a streak of 11-straight 20-point and 10rebound seasons. It would also mark the last season that Malone would lead the NBA in offensive boards. But he would still go on to play five more seasons in the NBA, averaging in double figures in two of those campaigns. After retiring following the 1994-95 season, Malone finished by having scored 27,409 points and grabbing 16,212 rebounds throughout his 19-year NBA career. His 8,531 free throws were more than any other player in NBA history, his 11,090 free throw attempts were ranked second all-time and his 1,329 games played ranked third in league history. Malone is the NBA’s all-time leader in offensive rebounds and second in defensive rebounds. He also set a league record by grabbing 21 offensive boards in a single game against the Seattle SuperSonics in 1977. And when it was all said and done, Malone would go on to set the NBA record for most consecutive games played without fouling out with 1,207. For everything he did on the court, he was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001. Although his playing career has ended, his excellence has continued — Malone is now using his exceptional skills and abilities to help individuals and organizations in the Houston area and

(L TO R) CLYDE DREXLER, MOSES MALONE, ELVIN HAYES beyond through his active participation in the Houston NBRPA Chapter. He is a key player in the chapter’s three key initiatives: Water Conservation & Education, Health & Wellness Education, and STEM Education. At this year’s annual All-Star weekend being held in Houston, he and fellow Hall of Famers Elvin “Big E” Hayes and Calvin Murphy will host the NBRPA’s national flagship event of the year, the Legends of Basketball All-Star Weekend and its Saturday Red Carpet Soiree at Mercedes Benz of Houston Greenway. Billed as a star-studded, fun and philanthropic weekend, it celebrates the careers of the organization’s illustrious membership. And in honor of Black History Month, it also highlights the impact of African-American players on the game of basketball.

ADDTIONAL AWARD WINNERS
RING OF HONOR AWARD WINNER
Lafayette “Fat” Lever Rebound Magazine has named Lafayette “Fat” Lever as its Ring of Honor Award Winner, an award intended to honor a Legend who has made significant long-term contributions to his community. With an 11-year career as an NBA player, Lever was a twotime All-Star and was considered one of the league’s top defensive players for the majority of his career. He played his first two seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers before going to the Denver Nuggets where he was considered one the league’s best point guards in the late 80s. He spent his last three seasons with the Dallas Mavericks. Finishing as the Nuggets’ leader in all-time steals and second in career assists, his career averages came in at 13.9 points, 6.0 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 2.22 steals per game in 752 outings. And he is one of only three players in NBA history to record 15-plus points, rebounds and assists in a single playoff game, Jason Kidd and Wilt Chamberlain being the other two. Lever is remembered in particular for his versatility, his ability to do everything. He attributes this ability to his high school coach at Pueblo High School in Tucson. Winning back-to-back Arizona state titles in 1976-78, every member of the team was expected to score, pass, rebound and defend. According to the Nuggets former coach Doug Moe, “You couldn’t keep him off the floor. He could pass, shoot, run, play defense, rebound. There wasn’t a phase of the game he couldn’t play.” Lever is also remembered for his amazing 45 triple-doubles while with Denver; the only players to have more career tripledoubles than Lever are Oscar Robinson, Magic Johnson, Jason Kidd, Wilt Chamberlain and Larry Bird. Moe, one of Lever’s great admirers, has said that “It was easy for him to get a tripledouble because he was such a great rebounder. He was just a
14 I
terrific player and probably underrated. He wasn’t what you’d call a household name. Everybody knew he was a good player but he was better than what people really knew.” He is now director of player development for the Sacramento Kings. In the King’s announcement of his hiring in 2007, Geoff Petrie, president of basketball operations, said that “We’re really excited to have Fat join our staff. He had an outstanding career in the NBA. He’s worked with the NBA Cares program and he’s been involved with the community in Phoenix.” A former point guard for Arizona State University and a fan favorite, his Alma Mater honored Lever by retiring his jersey in January of 2012. It is Lever’s versatility and his involvement with a variety of communities that is a key element in honoring his contributions. In addition to his involvement in the communities where he has played and lived, Lever has been active in NBA programs and in the NBRPA in his post-playing years. His long-time service as president of the NBRPA Phoenix chapter has been heralded as a significant contribution in that chapter’s growth and development.
ENTREPRENEUR AWARD WINNER
Stephen Bardo Winner of Rebound Magazine’s 2013 Entrepreneur Award is Stephen Bardo. He has had a well known basketball career but he’s been an entrepreneur in the making from his earliest years. As a kid he sat in the living room watching basketball with his dad, Harold. Both father and son were calling the games along with well-known basketball sportscasters like Dick Vitale or Billy Parker, and Bardo feels like his broadcast training began then. But he first needed to play basketball. From honors as an All-State and honorable mention as an AllAmerican basketball player while in high school in Carbondale, Illinois, Bardo went on to be a successful four-year point guard as a Fighting Illini, reaching the NCAA tournament each season. During his college playing days he was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and twice made All-Conference, leading the “Flyin’ Illini” to the Final Four in 1989 — a team that was one of the most memorable in NCAA history. Ten years later he and his Illinois coach Lou Henson were being interviewed by Vitale on ESPN. During that time Bardo said, “Dick, I want your job.” The ESPN producer complimented
Awards_CvrStory_V2_Layout 1 2/4/13 9:36 AM Page 2
him on his responses and Bardo’s dad told him to write the network a thank you note. A month later he received a letter back, not from ESPN but from the president of ABC Sports, Dennis Swanson. In essence the letter said that when Bardo was ready to work, Swanson was ready to hire him. A post-basketball career was already in the works. Swanson, now president of Fox Television Station Operations, has said “I give him a ton of credit.” He continued to say that “Stephen had that mental toughness. He had that discipline. It’s one thing to be tall, athletic, handsome and with a good voice. But it’s another thing to do the homework, to do the studying, to do all that goes into it. Everything was there, he just needed to nurture it and grow it, which he’s done. The result is that he’s very successful as an on-air talent.” Between college and ESPN, Bardo had a 10-year career split between the NBA, CBA and teams overseas in France, Italy, Japan, Spain and Venezuela. But as a natural-born entrepreneur, he has added to his college basketball analyst gig by becoming a motivational speaker and authoring a book considered to be a success guide for young people — “How to Make the League Without Picking Up the Rock.” Just as he took younger players under his wing in college, this book reveals to readers that there is a level of success in every career field and it starts by meeting and developing positive relationships with others that will pay dividends later on in life. It also tells them that they can’t be a great success until they can picture it in their own minds. Clearly, Bardo’s entrepreneurial nature enabled him to picture a very successful life for himself after playing basketball. Check out his website at www.stephenbardo.com/.
PHILANTHROPIC AWARD WINNER
Dale Ellis Intended to honor a Legend who has given substantially of himself to help others, Rebound Magazine is awarding its 2013 Philanthropic Award to Dale Ellis. With a 17-year career in the NBA, he has been regarded as arguably one the best shooters in the league’s history, one sportswriter remarking on his “deadeye accuracy.” Drafted ninth overall in the 1983 NBA draft by the Dallas Mavericks, his career took a tremendous leap when he was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics. Ellis played with them for four and a half seasons and was recognized by the league as the NBA Most Improved Player in 1987. In 1989 he was named an NBA All-Star and named to the All-NBA third team. He also played for the Milwaukee Bucks, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Toronto Raptors and the Charlotte Hornets. At the close of his NBA career, Ellis had played in 1,209 games
and had career per game averages of 15.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, a .479 field goal percentage and a .403 three-point field goal percentage. He is not only fifth all-time in NBA history in threepoint shots made with 1,719, he is also 21st all-time in NBA history in three-point field goal percentage. Now settled back in his hometown of Marietta, Georgia, he has maintained his playing days workout regimen of push-ups, sit-ups, crunches and biking a minimum of 100 miles a week supplemented with trail running. It keeps him fit and enables him to refocus, just like playing basketball used to do. Traveling the world as an ambassador of the game, he has been to Asia, Europe and South America. Ellis has also spent time visiting U.S. troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait. Now president of the NBRPA Atlanta chapter, he’s involved in helping the 140 retired players in the area make a positive transition from the court to a private life. He says he knows what it’s like — “The game is all you know. And then comes the reality of, ‘What do I do now?’ It’s hard.” In addition to NBRPA business, Ellis spends much of his time helping youth in the Atlanta area. As a strong proponent of the power of literacy and education to empower and change lives, he is actively involved in many programs helping local kids, such as the Boys & Girls Club, and participating in charity events, such as golf tournaments, that directly benefit these organizations. He has also partnered with Olympic track and field athletes Mel Pinder and Kevin Young as well as Olympic hoops star Debbie Miller to work with kids through a summer camp program, much as he did during his playing days. The goal is to teach kids simple life skills that are complimentary to their athletic abilities, telling them that “it’s okay to reach for the stars when it comes to athletics but the most important thing is education.” His advice to everyone from kids to retired Legends is the same — “Figure out what it is you want to do with your life and do it. Reach for the highest level because if you don’t make it, you’ll always find something in between that is rewarding.”

LEGACY AWARD WINNER
The Jones Brothers
ple. of n. of
avid Vann
If ever a family has left a basketball legacy, it would be the Jones brothers, winner of Rebound Magazine’s 2013 Legacy Award. The very tall Jones family of McGehee, Arkansas had eight children — seven boys and one girl (she was the shortest at 6-foot-3). Six of the seven brothers, all 6-foot-8 or taller, played college basketball at the predominantly-African-American Albany State University in Georgia. And for 18 straight seasons one of the Jones brothers was the center for the Albany team. Four of them — Wilbert, Caldwell, Major and Charles — went on to play pro basketball in the NBA. While the other two brothers, Oliver and Melvin, also had pro playing opportunities, they stayed primarily connected to the game through college sports. Oliver was the head coach of the Division II Albany State Golden Rams for 28 years and Melvin, a supervisor at Procter & Gamble’s Albany paper products plant, served as Oliver’s unpaid assistant as his work duties permitted. Wilbert “Wil” Jones was the Round 5 pick; 69th overall, in the 1969 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. A six-foot-8 forward, he played seven seasons in the ABA, from 1969-1976, for the Miami Floridians, Memphis Pros, Memphis Tams and Kentucky Colonels. Following the 1976 merger of the ABA-NBA, the Indiana Pacers selected him in the ABA Dispersal Draft where he played two seasons in the NBA for the Pacers and the Buffalo Braves. While with the Colonels in 1975 Wil won the ABA Championship and was named to the ABA All-Defense Team. He was also an ABA All-Star in 1972 while with the Tams. Next to enter the NBA Draft was center-power forward, 6-foot-11 Caldwell “Pops” Jones who had a 17-year career. In 1973 the Philadelphia 76ers drafted him in Round 2; 32nd overall but he started with the ABA’s San Diego Conquistadores turned San Diego Sails and then played with the Kentucky Colonels and Spirits of St. Louis, being named an ABA All-Star in 1975. In 1976 he moved to the NBA playing with the high-powered 76ers of that era. He also played with the Houston Rockets, Chicago Bulls and Portland Trail Blazers and was twice named to the NBA AllDefensive First Team in 1981-1982. Following Caldwell was the 6-foot-9, Major Jones, drafted in 1976 by the Portland Trail Blazers in Round 2; 20th overall. As a power forward he started his career with the CBA’s Allentown Jets and then moved to the WBA Fresno Stars before playing for the Houston Rockets from 1979-1984. He ended his nine-year career in 1985 with the Detroit Pistons. Finally came the youngest Jones brother, the six-foot-9, power forward-center, Charles. He was drafted in 1979 by the Phoenix Suns in Round 8; 165th overall, and enjoyed a 15-year professional career playing on several CBA teams as well as in the NBA; he also played on teams in France and Italy. CBA teams included the Maine Lumberjacks (twice), Bay State Bombardiers (twice) and the

Tampa Bay Thrillers while his NBA teams included the Philadelphia 76ers, Chicago Bulls, Washington Bullets, Detroit Pistons and Houston Rockets. In 1995 Charles won an NBA Championship with the Rockets appearing in 19 out of 22 post-season contests. Beyond playing great basketball, what has most often been observed as one of the Jones family traits is their unflappability. Nothing seems to rattle them – they just appear to take it all in stride. But don’t let that fool you into thinking they haven’t cared about winning or weren’t fully engaged in the game! Their shared love for the game their dad called “that jumpin’ and jumpin’” has made them powerful ambassadors for basketball. It has also shaped them into solid role models for how to handle the fame and notoriety that comes with being a pro player. CHARLES JONES WIL (24) & CALDWELL (11) JONES

Moses Malone has said of the Joneses, “They’re good people, really down to earth. Nothing gets them upset. When Caldwell fouls, he acts like nothing happened.” Also talking about Caldwell, former 76ers teammate Franklin Edwards said that “I’ve tried to model myself after him. He speaks to everybody, not at anybody.” And David Vann, manager of the Philadelphia softball team that Caldwell and Charles played on, has shared that Caldwell “knows how to deal with people. If fans disrespect him, he’s got a great way of dealing with that. He just doesn’t look down. When you’re seven feet tall, that’s easy.” And by all accounts, these are things that could be said of all the Jones brothers. Major has served as president of the NBRPA Houston Chapter since 2009. Under his strong leadership, the Houston Legends are actively investing in their local community as well as communities around the globe through implementation of their key initiatives. Chapter members have played a key role in expanding the effectiveness of the national organization for all its members. The Jones brothers have indeed left a basketball legacy that won’t soon be forgotten.
DIVERSITY AWARD WINNER
David Lattin Rebound Magazine’s 2013 Diversity Award goes to David “Big Daddy D” Lattin. He had a six-year career in both the NBA and ABA, playing with the San Francisco Warriors, Phoenix Suns, Pittsburgh Condors and the Memphis Tams, before ending his career with three years with the world famous Harlem Globetrotters. But he is best known for his college basketball play. Lattin was one of seven African-American players on the 1966 Texas Western championship team which is considered one of the most important teams in college basketball history. But his impact on diversity in basketball began in high school where he was Houston’s first Texas high school basketball All-American in the early 1960s when he played at segregated Evan E. Worthing Senior High School. Following his high school graduation in 1963 he went to Tennessee State but left there in 1964 because of lack of basketball competition. Returning to Houston, in 1965 he received a full scholarship to Texas Western College, now the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) where he played center for the Miners, an NCAA Division 1 team under legendary coach Don Haskins. With a starting lineup of five African-American players, they were slated to play the No. 1-ranked University of Kentucky team coached by Adolph Rupp, for the 1966 NCAA basketball championship. The reason for this game’s historical significance is that an allBlack team had never played an all-white team in an NCAA title game. At the start of the game, Haskins let the team know that Rupp had vowed that this all-African-American team would never beat his team. Lattin and his teammates now had something to

prove. And prove it, they did with a stunning 72-65 upset. A dominant part of the game, Lattin was named All-American during both his 1966-67 seasons at Texas Western, and he still holds a number of school NCAA tournament records. Pat Riley, himself a legendary coach and NBA All-Star, was a Kentucky starter that season and recalled that “It was a violent game. I don’t mean there were any fights but they were desperate and they were committed and they were more motivated than we were.” Known in sports annals as the game that “changed everything,” it advanced the civil rights movement. It has been called the sports equivalent of the Selma bridge or Greensboro lunch counter incidents, even referred to as the “Brown vs. Board of Education of college basketball.” Basically, it allowed for greater racial equality in college sports to become the norm rather than the exception. While this game has been the subject of numerous documentaries, books, newspaper and magazine articles over the years, Lattin has written and self-published his account of this inspiring experience from the perspective of the players. Entitled “Slam Dunk to Glory — the story of the 1966 NCAA Championship Game that changed America forever,” it was made into a featurelength motion picture entitled “Glory Road.” Released in January 2006 by Disney motion pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Productions, it won an ESPY award as the best sports movie of 2006. And in 2007 Lattin was inducted to the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Since his retirement from basketball, Lattin has gone on to become a successful businessman as both a corporate executive and an entrepreneur.

Houston Chapter
ON A ROLL THE NBRPA –HOUSTON CHAPTER is actively carrying out the organization’s dual mission of helping its members make a smooth transition to a life beyond the court and to act as localto-global ambassadors to the sport of basketball. And chapter members are also actively involved in their local community. Under the leadership of President Major Jones and his officers and directors, Kevin Loder, John Egan, Howard Smith, Ollie Taylor, Harvey Catchings and Steve Hayes, the Houston members are devoting their time and talents to three key initiatives: 1. Water Conservation & Education 2. Health & Wellness Education 3. STEM Education WATER CONSERVATION AND EDUCATION To increase exposure and educational experiences about our shared water resources to approximately 20,000 middle and high school students and thousands of educators, the Houston chapter has formed a partnership with the Project WET Foundation (PWF). The goal is to use the Legends’ star power to make them aware of the importance of water in everyday life and how to conserve it — why it is so important to do so on a daily basis. The partnership with PWF has created Make a Splash program that every quarter tours one local middle or high school or provides field trips to county parks and water processing facilities to promote awareness of and increase knowledge about water resources. Then every September students from the schools that were visited are invited to the chapter’s annual Make a Splash with NBRPA-Houston and Project WET Festival. This program has also become international with the addition of a three-year contract with the country of Ghana to educate their communities through teachers sharing the importance of water education — of water hygiene, health and conservation. The Village of Vision for Haiti Foundation, American Airlines and Sunspring Innovative Water Technologies are also partners in providing clean water solutions and teaching the use of clean water to aid efforts to eradicate cholera. HEALTH AND WELLNESS EDUCATION The Houston Legends are out to combat obesity in young people. Teaming up with local youth-servicing agencies, such as the Boys and Girls Club of Houston, Harris County Houston

Sport Authority, local charter schools and other similar organizations, they have introduced a program called Kids Get Fit that teaches kids the importance of exercise to maintain a healthy way of life. The goal of this initiative is to leverage the Legends and their star status to help educate upwards of 20,000 youth annually. The Kids Get Fit Community Basketball Clinics are held quarterly throughout Houston and its surrounding areas for kids from middle school through 12th grade. As the kids are learning basketball skills, such as rebounding, dribbling, shooting and defensive drills from the chapter members, the instructors relate the drills to everyday life health habits. STEM EDUCATION Education in STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math – is an important initiative for chapter members to address. A growing issue for U.S. students is their lack of competitiveness in these areas compared to other countries. This is seen as a threat to the development of new ideas, new products, new companies and innovation that keeps the U.S. competitive and able to address the challenges related to healthcare, energy and the economy. Houston chapter members have created an initiative to be key advocates for STEM education with goals to increase the impact of philanthropy by acting as a voice for pre-existing high quality and scalable programs. These are programs that give young people an introduction to STEM and to key programs existing in the Houston market. Members hope to increase attention and financial support to these programs by producing outreach campaigns with corporate partners and pre-existing programs. They also participate in STEM challenges hosted annually in Houston with the aim of increasing scholarship offerings to STEM students graduating from high school to help their acceptance into college engineering, math and science programs.

Welcome to The Bayou City
F
ounded in 1836, Houston is the fourth most populous city in the U.S. — it’s the cosmopolitan center of Texas but still loaded with that famous laidback Southern charm. It is definitely a city that loves sports and has a year-round climate that enables residents and visitors alike to watch and/or participate. It is also home to the Houston Chapter of NBRPA and all its NBA, ABA and Harlem Globtrotters Legends. Headed by president Major Jones, the other officers include Kevin Loder, vice president; John Egan, treasurer; Howard Smith, secretary; Ollie Taylor, sergeant at arms; Harvey Catchings and Steve Hayes, board officers. CENTERCOURT PREMIERE OF “SPIRIT OF LOVE” FILM A DIVERSE COMING-OF-AGE STORY, “Spirit of Love” is a film based on the real-life Basketball Camps for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing held annually by NBRPA member Mike “Stinger” Glenn. While Glenn plays himself in the film, the actors are authentic deaf and hard of hearing actors cast as a group of misfit teens arriving at the 33rd Annual Basketball Camp. The life lessons they learn at the camp enable them to soar like eagles, whether they win or lose in life. It premieres February 16 at the Texas Christian Film Festival in Houston. This year’s 34th annual Mike Glenn Basketball Camp for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing will be held June 16-21. For more information on the movie, visit http://spiritoflovemovie.com and for information on the camp, visit www.mikeglenn.com. Congratulations to you, Mike.
LAKERS RETIRE HALL OF FAMER JAMAAL WILKES’ NO. 52 JERSEY MULTIPLE CONGRATULATIONS TO JAMAAL “SILK” WILKES who had his No. 52 jersey retired by the Los Angeles Lakers in a ceremony on December 28, 2012. As a strong supporting player, he won a title as an NBA rookie at Golden State alongside Rick Barry and Clifford Ray before earning three more rings in L.A. The Lakers only retire Hall of Famers’ jerseys, so Wilkes’ recent enshrinement into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame earlier in 2012 made this more recent honor possible. His jersey hangs in the rafters next to Magic Johnson’s No. 32. But more congratulations are in store for Wilkes because on January 17 his No. 52 jersey was retired by the UCLA Bruins and on the 28th he was honored for those accomplishments at halftime when the two high schools he played for – Santa Barbara High School and Ventura High – played one another in a game in Ventura.

NBRPAHQ LUNCH WITH THE CHAMPIONS NOVEMBER 29 WAS A MILESTONE day for the NBRPA. With the 2013 Board of Directors in attendance — Thurl Bailey, Rick Barry, Otis Birdsong, Harvey Catchings, Bob Elliott, Steve Hayes, Spencer Haywood, LaRue Martin, Johnny Newman, Marvin Roberts and George Tinsley — the Chicago business community and media got its inaugural introduction to the NBRPA. The first public event the NBRPA has held since it moved from New York was a rousing success. Since it was completely sold out, it seems folks in the Windy City are happy to have the organization here. Billed as “Lunch with the Champions,” it was held at Riva Restaurant on the iconic Navy Pier where Bailey, Barry and Haywood fascinated the standing-room-only crowd with championship insights. In addition to the NBRPA board members, other Legends attending the luncheon were NBRPA members Mark Aguirre, Stephen Bardo, Kenny Battle, Roger Brown, Emmette Bryant, Jim Grandholm, Bob Love, Jack Marin, Jeff Sanders, Sam Vincent, Antoine Walker and Bill Wennington. Media coverage for the event was astounding. It included CBS and FOX TV, ESPN Radio, the Chicago Sun-Times, NBA.com, Bulls.com, and the Chicago Bulls Radio Network as well as Crain’s Business Journal, Athlete’s Quarterly and the Getty Images Photo Wire to name a sampling of the media in attendance. HISTORIC 20-YEAR NBA PARTNERSHIP EXTENDED AND ENHANCED
MARY’S MISSION PARTNERS WITH PHOENIX SUNS
DURING THE “LUNCH WITH CHAMPIONS” noted above, former NBA All-Star and current NBRPA Vice Chairman Otis Birdsong announced an extension to the organization’s historic 20-year partnership with the NBA. The newly-expanded partnership will provide direct financial support to fund new and existing programs and services that uphold the NBRPA’s mission to assist former players as they transition into a life beyond playing professional basketball. “On behalf of the NBRPA’s Board of Directors and membership, I would like to thank Commissioner David Stern and the NBA for their support,” said Birdsong. “A philanthropic organization like ours would not exist without their two decades of support. The financial support of the NBA helps fund programs that assist in our members’ transition into life after the game.” He continued to say that “This enhanced partnership with the NBA will allow us to educate and assist more former players than ever before while creating direct revenue opportunities for NBRPA members.” Serving as chair of the NBRPA committee that worked with the NBA to solidify the extension, Birdsong’s committee members included NBRPA Chairman of the Board Bob Elliott, Board Members Harvey Catchings and Danny Schayes as well as President & CEO Arnie D. Fielkow. Charles Rosenzweig, NBA Senior Vice President and Entertainment & Player Marketing said that “We are proud to extend our extraordinary 20-year partnership with the NBRPA and support its tireless efforts to assist former players in life following their playing career.” Working in conjunction with the NBA and NBPA, the NBRPA’s membership promotes basketball and enhances its image through building community relationships and fostering support for charitable activities and philanthropic events that have a connection to the game. The extended partnership keeps in place the NBA and NBRPA’s group licensing program that provides direct revenues to NBRPA members.
THE PHOENIX SUNS are participating in a fundraiser for Mary’s Mission at their game with the Brooklyn Nets at the US Airways Center in Phoenix on March 24th. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the Mission. Mary’s Mission and Development Center is a CARF-approved (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) facility providing community-based services for youth in the Phoenix area. They provide residential care, support and motivation, both physical and therapeutic, for male and female youth between the ages of 11-17. Through outreach programs the Mission offers behavioral health management as well as education, treatment and counseling for a variety of issues for adults, such as substance abuse, gambling addiction, dui, domestic violence, and re-entry veteran and incarceration counseling.

Win Now; Explain Later

igger, stronger or faster? It’s the age old quest of every athlete. But what price will you pay to be bigger, stronger or faster? Right now athletes are being paid millions of dollars to be the best. It’s what I call generation money, when a whole generation of people are wealthy. Fame pulls you in for the moment and you are not really concerned about what happens afterward. Tons of athletes are using performance enhancement drugs, putting their minds and bodies at future risk so they can perform now – collect the dollars, collect the fame, collect the championships, the trophies, the awards NOW. Later on when the truth is revealed, many either willingly confess to their choices or their bodies confess unwillingly, breaking down because of the damaging effects of performance enhancement drugs. What it all boils down to is that everyone wants to be a champion. The question is do you want to do it the right way or the wrong way? Lance Armstrong took the world by storm giving us a hero, someone to look up to who did it the right way ... we

thought. Against all odds he survived cancer and became not only a sports icon but also a worldwide icon. But he cheated, really doing this in the name of winning. I once talked to a person who justified this behavior by saying “Well, the difference is if I train 20 hours-a-day to try to get a little bit better and the cheater, who uses performance enhancement drugs and becomes faster than anybody else on the track, trains only 2 hours-a-day, then it is worth all the fame and fortune.” God gave us all talents. I believe we should use those Godgiven talents to the best of our abilities. If you can’t be bigger, stronger or faster on your own, then in my view it’s not worth it. Ask Lance Armstrong or other athletes who have risked everything only to lose their integrity. What is done in the dark will come to light and you will still have to decide if you want to explain now or explain later. Cedric Ceballos is a former professional basketball player and NBA AllStar. A Stable Investment in the Hospitality Industry
D
id you ever imagine becoming part of the thriving hospitality industry? Did you ever think about owning a luxury resort and then dismiss the idea because you didn’t know where to start? Wonder no more. Chandler Hotel Group (CHG) offers its investors the best in a turnkey, full-service investment in the hospitality industry. Whether it be for the purchase or sale of a hotel property, third-party management of it, or its design and renovation, CHG handles it all. CEO and President Jared Chandler says that “Dependability, responsiveness and attention to detail at every step has been critical to our success, and we realize we should make it a practice to engage the best in everything we do to ensure ongoing, unquestionable expertise and results for our clients.” And reading the client testimonials on the company website supports the fact that the company follows its own policies. While CHG is a fully-tiered company that offers hotel brokerage, management, interior design and renovation services, it is always the people in any organization who make the difference. Made up of seasoned experts whose professional lives have been spent in the management, accounting, valuation and repositioning of hospitality property, they form a results-oriented team with deep expertise in every area of the hospitality investment industry. The team operates based on the unwavering principles upon which the company was founded — that every individual client is treated with care, concern and respect.
30 I
The CHG team’s commitment is that every client receives the best of their value-added expertise. They figure that if they don’t take care of a client, someone else will, so they do whatever it takes to serve a client well, no matter the effort required. At the most basic level, they apply their expertise, build a relationship with the client and add value to their client’s investment. The strength of that commitment is shown in the following accomplishments: • they have successfully closed over 180 lodging transactions in excess of $2 billion in gross sales • the management services division has successfully managed four- and five-diamond resorts, full-service conference hotels, boutique hotels and portfolios of limited service properties • they are affiliated with all the major brands in the industry today. But a company is only as strong as its leader and his or her vision. It’s clear that Jared Chandler is a true entrepreneur — someone who not only has a compelling vision but also has the ability to execute that vision. Chandler previously worked in the business of tax-deferred1031 investments and realized there was an opportunity for him to create a specialized and stable investment form for others in the hospitality industry. He paid attention to the people who were successful 1031 investors, watching how they invested and managed their money and then created his business based on those sound and proven practices.
Opp_Chandler_Wntr13_Layout 1 2/4/13 7:27 AM Page 4
“... we realize we should make it a practice to engage the best in everything we do to ensure ongoing, unquestionable expertise and results for our clients.” Chandler prefers his firm to be small and very hands-on to be able to take advantage of strategic opportunities as they arise and to have a say in how a project goes forward. He equates what the company does to a game of chess since no two transactions or properties they broker, manage or renovate are ever the same. For a “small” firm, however, they are in the Top 100 of 3rd Party Management Companies; CHG manages multiple hotels and resorts in several states including Arizona, California, Utah, Colorado, Arkansas, and Missouri, among others. Their Construction Division earned a Renovation of the Year award. And while they work with all the major players in the industry, they prefer Marriott or Hilton properties since they have proved to be the most attractive brands when it comes time to sell. On a personal level, Chandler says that family is always first but he also loves to help others in need, especially children. And he prefers to donate to charities on a local level, again giving smaller organizations the opportunity to have a say in where and how they use what they have been given. EAST COAST WINGS & GRILL —
A Solution for Athletes Focused on Return On Investment. AS A SMALL FORWARD FOR THE ORLANDO MAGIC, Quentin Richardson is best known for dribbling, passing and shooting. But the former first round draft pick also has a keen interest in business development, and recently became a multi-unit franchisee for East Coast Wings & Grill, a North Carolina-based concept known for its 75 flavors of award-winning buffalo-style wings. Together with JacksonBrown Hospitality Group, a Chicago-based company that recently helped develop and operate such properties as Michael Jordan’s Steak House, Richardson has committed to opening 10 East Coast Wings & Grill restaurants in Orlando over the next seven years. The first restaurant is expected to open early in 2013. “In professional sports, you always have a playbook or plan that needs to be executed to perfection. East Coast Wings & Grill provides that plan and the structure is already in place in terms of marketing and operations,” Richardson said. “We had our eyes on a couple of different concepts in the chicken wing segment, but simply could not look past East Coast Wings & Grill,” said Keith Jackson, Principal of JacksonBrown Hospitality Group. “It was nearly impossible not to be impressed with the incredible amount of leadership and industry experts they have assembled, as well as the environment they’ve created that the whole family can enjoy. We are excited to be part of the team.” “As many athletes move toward retirement, they have a great story to tell and great history, but they have a gap in their resume. A lot of them wonder what their second career is going to be,” said Sam Ballas, CEO of East Coast Wings & Grill. “Franchising is becoming a more popular way for sports stars to transition into life after their careers’ end, and we are excited that Quentin has chosen to make that transition with us.” January 2013 marks the 36th quarter of positive same-store sales for the brand. “The same store sales growth is clear validation that East Coast Wings & Grill has the best business model in the casual dining buffalo wing space.” said Ballas. East Coast Wings & Grill plans to open 15-20 restaurants annually for the next five years, dotting the country with outlets offering its trademark buffalo wings. And while its 75 flavors of buffalo style wings, all available in any of nine heat indexes remain a staple of the concept, East Coast Wings & Grill’s six-page menu also includes such casual dining fare as entrée salads, ribs, fajitas, burgers and sandwiches. The brand will expand operations in 2013 to South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Florida, Kentucky, Alabama and Tennessee, with Indiana and Virginia soon to follow.

Time to Think Taxes
I
t is the start of a New Year and already time to start thinking about filing your 2012 tax returns. Taxes have been a big part of the national discussion in the past few weeks and to save us from falling off the “fiscal cliff,” taxes will increase for most Americans in 2013. Everyone is required to file a tax return. Some people may try this difficult task on their own. However with the increased complexity of the tax laws it’s important to get a “coach” to help you. In order to make sure that you pay the least amount of taxes possible, it is always recommended to have someone help you and more importantly, YOU must be part of the process. There are many commercials and advertisements for people who want to help you prepare your return and all of them will say they are the best. Some of those people are licensed while others are not. • A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) works independently or for a firm and has had to complete rigorous educational requirements, including a college degree and passing a three-day national examination. Most CPAs have required work experience and must satisfy state annual continuing education requirements and follow a strict code of ethics. • A Tax Attorney is also highly qualified to help you prepare your return and has a strong understanding of tax law but can be much more expensive than a CPA. • An Enrolled Agent has passed an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) examination and is licensed to prepare a tax return. There are no educational requirements but they do have annual education requirements. • Bookkeepers are generally hired to help you pay your bills or record expenses for a business.
Other people commonly used to prepare returns include friends, relatives, and business associates. A professional athlete’s tax return has complex components that are generally beyond the expertise of many tax preparers. If you are involved in business and/or charitable organizations while playing or in retirement, hiring a CPA is your best choice. Finally, a licensed and educated accountant is required to perform several hours of continuing education every year. They stay up to date on the changes in tax laws that affect the preparation of tax returns.
When hiring a CPA check their credentials though the State Licensing Board in each state. Additionally, each state has a CPA Society that can help you find an accountant with expertise in the tax issues that are important to you. When you are choosing someone, ask for references of their other clients, meet with them or have a telephone conversation with them to gain a comfort level that they have an understanding of the unique tax issues for YOUR individual situation. Building a relationship with a CPA can help you in many aspects of your life as a trusted resource on future business and investment decisions. CPAs work with financial advisors, attorneys and your “team” to help you manage your financial portfolio. To make your CPA’s job easier at tax time make sure your important information is organized — including medical expenses, business expenses, charitable donations (receipts), tax documents (income, investments, etc.), credit card statements, property tax receipts, etc. Bring all this information with you to your meeting. Something you think may not be useful may in fact help you reduce the amount of taxes you may owe. Don’t wait until the last minute to get your information to your tax preparer. The IRS receives many tax documents — W-2, 1099, etc. — from employers and investment firms and compares them to what you submit with your return. If you leave something out the IRS will send you a notice that will include what you owe, including interest and penalties. Open any letters and notices you receive from the IRS immediately and contact your CPA. Don’t shop around for cost as a less expensive preparer may cost you more in taxes. Make sure you understand everything on your return. Make your preparer go over the detail on your return so YOU agree with the information. Many times bad preparers will overstate your deductions to get you a larger refund even though you did not qualify for those deductions. The problem is that YOU will owe the taxes, penalties and interest if you get audited. Remember that YOU sign your return under Penalty of Perjury that you agree with the information on the return. Members of the SFAA are available for a free review of your tax return. The Sports Financial Advisors Association (SFAA) is a non-profit association of CPAs, Attorneys and Financial Advisors. You can reach us at www.sportsfinancial.org

While delivering uncompromising quality and value, we cater to those seeking a healthier and fresher alternative to traditional fast food and fast casual food. Using premium ingredients, we offer a differentiated food experience through creative recipes to give our guests a food and beverage offering that is truly unique and worth coming back for. "We continue to focus on what matters most to our guests — delicious food served fast and accurately by friendly and courteous staff," said McAlister's Deli President and CEO Frank Paci. "It's also important that we continue to emphasize our strong ties to the community." To accelerate growth, McAlister’s Deli is seeking multi-unit foodservice operators to help expand the brand’s footprint. McAlister’s is in the midst of a strategic expansion across the U.S. and has identified major territories available for growth. "We are looking for franchisees who understand the importance of strong operations, have a commitment to offering genuine hospitality and the best guest experience, and are successful business leaders with the ability to build a strong team," Peter Wright, vice president of franchise development for McAlister's Deli.
McAlister’s Deli attracts franchisees from varying backgrounds, including professional sports. NFL player Dustin Keller with New York Jets joined McAlister’s in 2008. “Joining McAlister’s Deli as a franchise partner was a strategic business decision for me that has been incredibly rewarding. As athletes, like any other investors, we are looking for sound business investments that prove successful now and point to growing future success. McAlister’s has delivered on that promise.” Always looking to invest in the business, McAlister's Deli recently introduced a new store design for its restaurants. Combining modern and traditional elements, the new design gives the 23-yearold brand an updated look and feel. Part of the new store layout includes a unique Tea Bar where McAlister's Famous Sweet Tea is fresh brewed several times each day to insure freshness. A recent Technomic Fast Casual trends study ranked McAlister’s Deli as the top choice by customers in five different categories including Food, Service, Beverage, Atmosphere and Value. Technomic also recognized McAlister’s Deli as an inaugural winner of the Chain Restaurant Consumers’ Choice Awards in the fast casual category for the brand’s food and beverage. "It's an exciting time for McAlister's as we continue to invest in the brand and deliver strong average unit sales volume and an attractive sale to investment ratio," Wright says. "It's the ideal time to consider McAlister's Deli as your next business venture." For more details on McAlister's Deli franchising opportunities, visit their website at www.mcalistersdeli.com.

Eye On The Bottom Line ~ You want someone to keep an eye on the budget and bottom line of your home, Haley Custom Homes has negotiated the same deep discounts the National Builders command for materials. You want an energy efficient home, one that meets or exceeds today’s “green” standards.
