During 2007 and 2008, flying at alarmingly low altitudes and slow speeds, Adriel Heisey leaned out the door of his light plane, and holding his camera with both hands, re-photographed some of the Southwest’s most significant archaeological sites—the same sites photographed in 1929 by Charles Lindbergh and his new bride Anne.

Dear Santa Fe: Supporting our local economy is one of the most important— and simplest—things each and every one of us can do to strengthen this community. Our local businesses are key to making Santa Fe the wonderfully unique city it is—a city that is such a great place to live, work and visit. I want to thank the entrepreneurs, the workers and everyone who supports our local companies and helps build our economy. Local businesses create jobs and provide access to goods and services that enhance our quality of life. Local businesses innovate and create ways to make this a greener and more sustainable city. Local businesses give back to the community and support our youth, our elders and our families as they grow. We all can contribute to making Santa Fe more economically sustainable. We have the potential to make our City known for leading the way in green and renewable energy use and efficiencies, thereby creating new opportunities for local businesses. We will continue to support and recognize our local businesses and those who have made a commitment to Santa Fe by locating and keeping their businesses here. And the City Different will find unique and innovative ways to attract and retain new entrepreneurs for generations to come. Best Wishes,

Javier M. Gonzales Mayor

Letter from the President As our green community grows and becomes stronger, it is important to have a Santa Fe Green Chamber of Commerce that is committed to promoting local green businesses. We’re proud to recognize the hard-working members of the SFGCC board, which in the last year has brought such programming as: a talk by Robert Redford; the second-annual Santa Fe Green Festival; monthly luncheons and “Green drinks” with discussions on timely topics; and opportunities for networking with more plans in store for 2016. There’s a huge surprise event in the works for the fall, and we’re already starting plans for our third-annual Santa Fe Green Festival in May, which promises to be bigger and better than ever before. Make plans now to get a booth or become a sponsor! The SFGCC does more than offer special events. Its mission is also to help businesses become greener; to bring forth more educational programming; and to advocate on behalf of green issues in the community, in the state Legislature and nationally. Of course, we couldn’t do any of this without your support and membership in our organization, ensuring that the Green Chamber will continue to help you work toward the triple bottom line – “people, planet and profit.” Stay in touch with us and get the latest information about upcoming events on the Web at www.Santafegreenchamber.org or on Facebook at www. facebook.com/santafegreenchamber. And, as always, please accept our invitation to join us for our monthly luncheons and “Green Drinks” to see how businesses in Santa Fe are changing our community and the world by Doing Business Better!

New Mexico Heritage Abounds in Local Products By Andrea Romero New Mexico, our Land of Enchantment has some of the world’s finest rarities. From homemade atolé with local raw honey and fresh cream, to freshly roasted green chile, these delicious delectables are considered staples in the New Mexican diet, but are uncommon in even the most sophisticated and widely sourced global marketplaces. The treasures of New Mexico’s unique bounty abound, and yet we do not often give credit to the preservation of heritage in the everyday products we see at our local markets, boutiques and groceries.

Andrea Romero is the Director of MIX Santa Fe, Director of the Regional Coalition of LANL Communities, and CEO/cofounder of Tall Foods. As a 17th generation New Mexican, she has international experience working in the public, private and philanthropic sectors since graduating from Stanford University in Political Science.

Santa Feans often take for granted that we can easily get our daily green chile fix at Tecolote’ Café and fresh tortillas by just marching down to Alicia’s Tortilleria for any occasion. Regionally, from Taos to Santa Fe on 84/285, and micro-communities in between, our area is strewn with fine wines and exciting microbrews, to newly strung chile ristras and fresh, homegrown products from apples to blue corn. Many of our local foods are still homemade, handmade and prepared the ways they were in centuries past, from our early native peoples concocting foods and goods millennia ago, to Spanish influence intermingling in our products following the 16th century. Imagine those same NM heritage products, such as fresh chicos and Chimayó red chile, entering into existence in early human history since 9200 BCE. Our beloved artists and makers craft their world-renowned goods year round for our special once-a-year markets such as Spanish Market and Indian Market. Some locals know to contact their beloved artists prior to or after the international red carpet we lay out on the Plaza de Santa Fe and opt for purchasing these gorgeous works—jewelry, paintings, retablos—on the off season, so as to help the artists outside of market, (and maybe even get a better price!). As we call on our local producers to churn out novelty items, like the explosion of interest in cold pressed juice at Verde or newly formed alchemy churned out at Santa Sidra Hard Cider, we are thrilled to see the new mix with old. As we go about purchasing our goods, we must remember we are preserving our own unique history and culture through our buying habits. Choosing atolé over oatmeal means tasting centuries of NM history in each bite. Choosing to roast green chile in September over seasoning with Sriracha is a choice to support local farmers and NM heritage. Choosing locally formed and painted pottery means supporting a millennial tradition and seeing our own local earth transformed. We are so blessed to be in such a place that has countless exceptional products that can often only be sourced in our tiny towns, villages and pueblos. Next time you make the choice to pick a local product over an easily obtained, regularly duplicated item, think about how you’re partaking in cultural and historical preservation. Now, doesn’t that biscochito taste better? 12

How to Cut Through the Marketing Clutter By Carolyn Parrs One of the biggest challenges for small, local businesses is getting noticed. Many feel that because of their size and budgets, big box retailers are stealing their market share and it’s nearly impossible to compete. The truth is that local businesses have unique advantages over the big boxers, and if they are strategic about it, they can carve out a sweet piece of the market pie. The Good News In recent years, there has been a huge resurgence in customers wanting to shop local and support the community. Emarketer recently reported the following: U.S. consumers are choosing small businesses because of the personalized experiences they provide compared with larger businesses. The truth is people are rooting for you to succeed! Here are 3 ways to help make that happen. 1. Don’t Put the Cart Before the Horse One of the biggest and most expensive mistakes I see with small, local businesses is putting the cart (creating a website or ad campaign) before the horse (doing your core branding work so you actually know who you are and what you stand for). Brands aren’t just for the Big Boys. For local businesses, it is more important than ever to create a distinctive look and memorable message to cut through the clutter and stand out. This also includes rebranding your company if it’s stuck in the last century. 2. Find Your Customers and Give Them What They Want I just did a survey to my email list and asked them what are the 3 biggest marketing challenges in their business. Number 1: Reaching their ideal customer or client. No wonder. It’s noisy out there! How do you get to the people that want what you have? Do what I did: Ask.

Here are some questions to get you started: • Who is the perfect demographic for your offer? (Ex: age, gender, location, income, marital status, education level) • Who are the thought leaders, experts or celebrities in your niche that your people might follow? • Who are the most popular bloggers and podcasters in your niche? • Where do your people shop? What retailers or vendors do your people buy from (related to your niche)? • What are the most popular professional organizations in your niche that your people might belong to? • What Facebook pages are “liked” by your people, and groups they belong to? • What are the most popular LinkedIn groups in your niche? 3. Rinse and Repeat Now that you have a distinctive brand and know where your customers hang out, it’s time to work it. What I tell my clients is that when you start getting sick of hearing your message, you are on the right track. Consistency is everything. It takes 7–21 times of seeing, hearing and meeting your brand for a potential customer to make an actual purchase. So launching a cool website or Facebook page is just the beginning. Now you have to develop a strategic plan and implement it to get your message heard by the people who want to buy your product or service. Need help with that? Email me at carolyn@mindovermarkets.com for a free strategy session to create a clear, powerful and focused strategy for your business in 2016. Why Think Local? • In a 2011 Economic Development Quarterly study of 2,953 counties nationally in rural and urban centers alike, researchers found that the key to reversing long-term trends of stagnating incomes in the U.S. lies in nurturing small, locally owned independent businesses and limiting further expansion and market consolidation by larger corporations. • In a 2004 Andersonville (IL) Chamber of Commerce economic study, for every $100 in consumer

spending with a local firm, $68 remained in the Chicago economy; every $100 spent with a chain, only $43 remained in the Chicago economy. For every square foot occupied by a local firm, local economic impact is $179; for every square foot occupied by a chain firm, local economic impact is $105.

9 Reasons to Think Local First 1. Money Spent Local, Stays Local. Several studies have shown that money spent in a local business stays in the community. For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 goes back into the community – and our tax base. For every $100 spent at a chain store, only $14 comes back.* 2. Local Owners are Local Contributors. Local businesses give a greater amount of money to local causes. Nonprofits receive an average of 350% more support from local business owners than they do from non-locally owned businesses. They also directly inject money into the local economy through payments of wages and benefits to local residents. 3. Local Businesses Offer Stable Employment. Small local businesses are one of the largest employers nationally, and local businesses offer greater loyalty to their employees. 4. Lower Environmental Impact. Independent businesses make purchases requiring less transportation, and usually open and operate in commercial corridors and in-town instead of developing on the fringe. This means less sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution. Higher densities and greater access for pedestrians and public transit mean significantly less land devoted to roads and parking lots. 5. Promote Competition and Diversity. More local businesses equal more competition and better prices. When certain businesses monopolize the market, competition is gone. 6. Put Your Taxes to Good Use. Local businesses in neighborhoods need comparatively less infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community. A study of this found that the city’s small downtown stores generate a net annual surplus (tax revenue minus costs) of $326 per 1,000 square feet. Big-box stores, strip shopping centers, and fast-food outlets, however, require more in services than they produce in revenue. A big-box store creates an annual tax deficit of $468 per 1,000 square feet.* 7. Vote With Your Dollars. What you buy matters. Every time you choose a local business over a chain, it makes a difference. It’s a vote with your dollar. When you buy local, the ripple effect spreads from cash registers right to your street. 8. Keep New Mexico One-of-a-Kind. The unique shops, restaurants and businesses who call our city home are a huge part of what makes New Mexico inimitable. A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based not on a national sales plan but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices. 9. Invest in the Community. Locally owned businesses are run by people who live here, work here, and are invested in the community with much more than just their dollars. In an increasingly homogenized world, people are more likely to invest in or move to communities that preserve their one-of-akind businesses and unique attitude. *Sources: The Economic Impact of Locally Owned Businesses vs. Chains: A Case Study in MidCoast Maine, The Institute for Local Self-Reliance and Friends of MidCoast Maine, September 2003; and Economic Impact Analysis: A Case Study, Civic Economics, December 2002. *New Rules Project, Home Town Advantage Bullet in September 2003. *Tischler & Associates, Barnstable, MA. 22
