EXCEPTIONAL COFFEE

“WE’VE BEEN AROUND SINCE 1864 SO IT’S FAIR TO SAY WE KNOW COFFEE.”

WHAT WE DO Your customers want fresh, tasty, ethical coffee. You want your coffee business to be as profitable and as hassle-free as it can be. That’s where we come in! We source, roast and supply some of the tastiest coffee around. We also support our customers with all the training, equipment and expertise needed to run a profitable coffee business. But never at the expense of communities, farmers or the planet. We’re as passionate about our principles as we are about our coffee. This brochure offers an overview of what we do – and how we do it. You can find out more at www.matthewalgie.com.

“MATTHEW ALGIE INTRODUCED THE WORLD’S FIRST TRIPLE CERTIFIED COFFEE.” TO US, CERTIFICATIONS AREN’T BADGES, THEY’RE PRINCIPLES. And we don’t just follow the standards – we work closely with organisations such as Fairtrade International to help develop them. We also work with producers to help them achieve certification. Not just so they’re signed, sealed and certified – but because certification can allow producers to operate more sustainably, and at the same time improve the quality of their beans.

Fairtrade The Fairtrade Mark is the only independent guarantee that coffee farmers have been paid a price that’s higher than the cost of production. It also guarantees an additional social premium for the growers. This premium must be spent democratically: to develop the business or pay for community projects.

Rainforest Alliance The Rainforest Alliance seal of approval means that coffee farmers look after the tropical forests where they live and work. This certifies that wildlife is protected, rivers are kept clean, and natural resources conserved. For us, it’s the gold standard in environmental certifications for coffee growing.

Organic Organic coffee means farmers don’t use unnecessary chemicals and pesticides – good news for plant and animal life. It’s also good news for farmers; organic certification means they command higher prices, on top of the Fairtrade premium.

HELPING FARMERS TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE IN PERU San Juan del Oro is a coffee co-operative in southern Peru with which we have developed a strong relationship over a number of years. As with all of our key coffee suppliers, we are committed to supporting the co-operative’s farmer members in tackling whatever challenges they may face in producing their delicious triple-certified coffee. Juan Aguirre Chambi Mamani, a member of San Juan del Oro, was severely impacted by the outbreak of “roya” in 2013/14, a coffee disease which spread rapidly through Latin America due to favourable conditions brought about by climate change. To help him, and other farmers, become more resilient to these challenges and recover his 75% yield losses, our project assisted him in implementing climate-smart farming techniques such as planting new shade trees, using organic fertilisers and improving water handling techniques. In recognition of the successes of the climate change adaptation support at San Juan del Oro, we scooped top prize at the 2Degrees Awards in the category Water Management in 2015. Since then, our support for farmers in Peru has expanded to include the empowerment of young people and women in the community. Matthew Algie continues to be actively involved in numerous projects to help deliver sustainable, high quality coffee and to support coffee communities.

HAND ROASTED COFFEE All our coffee is ethically sourced and traceable, but what makes our hand-roasted coffees so exceptional is the direct sourcing of the most outstanding one-off microlots, often an entire crop, from individual farmers. Seasonality is a major factor in the selection process, with only the freshest green beans making the cut. Then there’s the hand roasting in the Italian ‘Vittoria’ traditional drum roaster – in batches of just 15-25kg. With decades of experience, we know how to develop the perfect flavour during the roasting process and how to preserve the integrity and freshness of the roasted beans right up until the moment the coffee is brewed. The result? Each hand roasted microlot is unique, distinctive and memorable. We change our hand-roasted offering regularly. Once a microlot is gone, it’s gone.
