MATTHEW P. RODGERS Portfolio of work
Matthew Paul Rodgers, M. Arch As architects, it is our responsibility is to shape the world of human habitation. There are many avenues in which the responsibility of architecture can be pursued. I have explored many avenues and through this portfolio, I will demonstrate significant architectural concepts. Architecture should embrace Social Appropriateness Architecture must share a dialect with the local community, and establish a sense of “Place.
Architecture is about Contextual Innovation Innovation, It is innovation that drives the field and rescues architecture from sameness. This is achieved by challenging the preconceptions of our field, and implementing solutions to satisfy larger conceptual issues.
Architecture is about collaboration. This is demonstrated through Architecture idea sharing, and through the Performance of Architecture. These are a few of the concepts that give architecture power, and are important concepts in shaping habitable space.
Matthew Paul Rodgers, M. Arch
I am a recent graduate with a Masters Degree in Architecture from UNLV, which focused on Urban and Civic design. My thesis project was advised by Gensler Architects of Nevada, and utilized street performance and performance arts venues as an urban intervention for Downtown Las Vegas. The pedagogy of the Gensler Studio provided me with valuable experience in design methodology, skills in collaboration, teamwork, and idea sharing. I’ve heightened these skills as I’ve been working towards completing my IDP at a small firm in Clearwater Florida. This firm has provided me with experiences in all phases of the design process. SHARED SPACE
In Las Vegas, growth became exponential, and suburban sprawl has created a series of privatized neighborhoods that do not offer the residents the opportunity of a Live/Work experience. Urban/Suburban Hybrid housing is intended to be a catalyst and a driver for change in how the city of Las Vegas approaches housing. As Las Vegas is currently over-built, space starts to become more and more valuable, this project recognizes that we will soon reach a point in which land will be a vital asset.

Project Description: Performing Architecture is an urban intervention for Downtown Las Vegas. The project utilizes Performance Arts and Performance art venues as a way to characterize Downtown Las Vegas. This project demonstrates the implementation of an environment that revolves around performance art, and establishes a live-work environment for the inhabitants. Background Information: Las Vegas itself is home to one of the most famous streets in the world, the Las Vegas Strip. I feel that the Downtown Las Vegas area has the potential to provide Las Vegas with an identity that extends beyond the “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” conception. Downtown Las Vegas is the byproduct of a city that is the quintessential model for suburban sprawl. As Las Vegas is rich in theater and art, it is the goal of Performance Architecture to offer an alternative to the character of Las Vegas. Studio Culture: The project is supervised by Gensler Architects of Nevada. It was offered as part of an urban design focused studio for the completion of my thesis. Being mentored by Yim Gloria Jew currently teaching at CCA, the project has received recognition. This project has allowed me to demonstrate my passion for Architecture and Performance Arts in a single project.

Street Performers are like canaries in the mines... When the canaries die that means that the mines are poisonous, and must be evacuated. Like canaries the presence of street performers shows that the society has the necessary freedoms to allow healthy human habitation. When the laws of society become so restrictive, or public spaces get so controlled that street performers can no longer exist than that’s the sign that society is not healthy for human habitation. - Mark Rothman
