The arm is designed specifically to be used as a shelf for items frequently carried by the user, e.g., phone, keys, coffee, drink, or book. User feedback prompted adjustment of the arm to feature padding, so enabling use as a back support when the stool is rotated.

The frame is designed to incorporate the added stability required for the stool legs, without sacrificing the design’s effectiveness. The seat is designed with the comfort of the user a priority, with curved edges to the beech wood seat, and the seat pad inset from the edge to add depth.

The storage pouch is designed to mimic a trouser pocket, so alleviating discomfort for the user when having to adjust position to reach into a back pocket. The pouch is attached to the underside of the seat with poppers and can easily be removed and reattached to any of the three different sides for versatility.

Final stool: User testing revealed that the most common use for the stool would be as additional seating for any room in the home, neatly stored against a wall or in the corner when not in use.

02. Nordic Barstools The Brief: Design a range of bespoke barstools for the Villa Copenhagen hotel. The barstools will be features in the restaurant / dining areas and must be made to blend in with the Nordic interior.

Page 10

The Project: Aim: design minimal and clean barstools to blend with the hotel’s interior where each area has its own individual style, so necessitating a subtely different design style.

Matt Eisenhower Design Portfolio

Villa Copenhagen is a new, luxury hotel located next to Copenhagen’s central station, inside a refurbished historic building. Featuring 390 rooms, a range of event spaces and a number of fine dining venues, the hotel focuses on sustainability with an eco-swim pool and rooftop herb garden.

The three barstools are designed for use in the hotel’s various dining areas. The larger two are intented for the bar areas, situated within two different dining rooms and the lower one, for dining height in the central bar area.

The shells of the barstools were bespoke-manufactured by our workshop in Portugal. The base for the left stool was bespokemanufactured in England, and the other two bases, pre made in Italy.

This project was part of my placement at Inside Out Contracts in collaboration with interior designers Goddard Littlefair.

03. Stafford Hotel Sofa bed The Brief: Design a bespoke sofa with the capacity to fit a single sofa bed for the Stafford Hotel London. The design must be made to fit with the class, style and grandeur of the hotel.

Page 14

The Project: Aim: Sofa beds are constrained by the specific frame and dimensions necessary for their functionality. The final piece incorporates a mechanism that works within these constraints to feel like a part of the sofa’s design.

Matt Eisenhower Design Portfolio

Located in London’s Mayfair, next to St. James Park and Buckingham Palace, the luxury, 5-star Stafford Hotel features elegant and grand interior design with luxury fabrics and furniture throughout.

Sofa bed side and front views: a snapshot of the Rhino design used for technical drawings.

The sofa bed was designed with an elegant, wooden frame and wide, comfortable arm rests, used to hide the sofa bed mechanism.

To remain in keeping with the hotel’s elegant style, the sofa bed was designed using dark walnut stained wood and upholstered in a navy and gold patterned William Morris fabric to the back with a contrasting, plain, soft, navy velvet on the inside. The sofa bed was designed in three different colour variants for use in differently designed hotel rooms.

05. Irish Pub Chair The Brief: Design a relaxed, comfortable lounge chair for the Paris gastro pub, Pub St Germain. The chair must blend with the rugged pub aesthetic.

Page 22

The Project: Pub atmospheres do not always go hand in hand with luxury. My design aimed to create a pub style feel with mixes of materials and forms without sacrificing quality.

Matt Eisenhower Design Portfolio

Pub St Germain, is a new gastro pub in Paris located close to the Notre-Dame Cathedral. The interior is a mix of rugged pub furniture and high end dining.

Designed to fit the pub’s atmosphere, the lounge chair is comfortable with lower back legs to lend a relaxed feel

The outside back and sides of the chair are upholstered in a light, taupe leather with a contrasting bright orange velvet to the inside. The chair is finished with a mixture of both strip and individual antique brass studing.

This project was part of my placement at Inside Out Contracts.

Matt Eisenhower Design Portfolio

Page 23

The design includes seam detail between the taupe leather and orange velvet with a balance between brass single studding and strip studding around the chair’s back.

The final design was made to three different scales, from a small tub chair to large lounge chair. The client chose the medium lounge chair for this project.

Produced by our workshop on site in Paris, the medium lounge chair is shown in-situ in Pub St Germain’s pool table room. Others are used in the pub’s lounge area and side rooms.

06. NTUDI Degree Show The Brief: Develop and curate a virtual space to show the work of the 2021 final year product design graduates by building and improving on the techniques used in the 2020 show. .

Page 26

The Project: Aim: A group project, made up of NTUDI volunteers, tasked with creating an open space to show the work of the graduating class in an equitable way. The project also aims to create a beautiful and unique viewing experience for the visitor.

Matt Eisenhower Design Portfolio

Mood board - Dreamy curved rooms, light colours, cloudy sunset views, rounded windows, translucent room dividers and bumpy wall details. Colours - Light pinks, oranges, yellows and whites

Branding design: some of the NTUDI team were tasked with brand development. The final brand guidelines included colour, logos and font requirements and were used to influence the shows design and feel.

With over 200 products to display in 11 rooms, the project involved extensive forward planning by the team. Rooms were designed thematically to show work grouped next to similar projects and to ensure that each individual’s work was easy to find.

This voluntary project was completed as part of the 2021 university degree show “NTUDI.”

Done entirely in KeyShot to keep student’s design and texturing in place, each project was laid out in the room using carpet or plinths. To overcome the difficulties that this posed, KeyShot was run in performance mode and navigated with geometry view.
