WHAT ARE
TRUE COLORS Society has the belief that one never knows the extent of another’s character until we see their ‘true colors.’ Rather, only the surface of our personalities is ever seen in passing. To the world, we often wear a ‘mask’ to conceal what we are unwilling to show to others. When we try to explain ourselves and emotions with logic, we talk ourselves out of fully experiencing the moment. So, it is explained in color. ‘True Colors’ is a portrait series that confronts this notion, displaying individuals glowing in colors that reflect the depth of our individual personalities. An individual’s true colors are what are seen in the dark – or rather, what is not seen in the light of day under the public eye. Our true colors shine in the little moments of happiness we enjoy, glow in the company of someone we love, or pulse with our vulnerabilities and insecurities that are all too precious for the rest of the world to see or prey upon. No color in the series is tied to a particular emotion or feeling (i.e. blue is not indicative of sadness or ‘feeling blue’). Rather, the hue and vibrancy is relevant to the individuals themselves. What are your true colors?

An aspiring GRAPHIC DESIGN and PHOTOGRAPHER, Matthew Mitera has chased his visions and passions for design across the world over his undergrad education. His chosen field of work is in portraits, a line of work he has decided to pursue following graduation. His portrait series of TRUE COLORS is the perfect outlet to depicting an individual at their most genuine and vulnerable moments. He chose to combine his education in the fine arts with painting and color, discipline on the digital plane with the ADOBE SUITE, and knowledge of PHOTOGRAPHY to experiement with glow-in-the-dark portraiture. The vibrancy and splatters of color and this series are a testament to his penchant for energetic hues and ambition to push the boundaries for new angles and exceptional compositions.
