ABOUT ME
from PORTFOLIO 2023
Hello. My name is Matthew Angulo and I am a fourth year interior design student at Virginia Tech. Growing up, I always appreciated the beauty and intricacies of design and architecture. Today, this appreciation has evolved into a passion for designing environments that better the lives of others and our planet. Within my designs, I strive to stay observant of not only the vast world around me, but also the effect certain spaces have on an individual and their surrounding communities. Throughout my four years at Virginia Tech, I have discovered the vital role that design plays in shaping our society. As I learn more about design, I learn more about myself and the world around me. As a result, my passion for learning and problem solving is growing exponentially. I am eager to further immerse myself into interior design and related fields. linkedin.com/in/matthew-angulo1/

Next aims to improve everyday life through cuttingedge robotics. Their products help consumers to navigate and maintain household tasks to make life easier. The design of the new Next Design Research hub is inspired by one of the most crucial instruments for navigation: the compass. This ancient innovation changed how we operate on earth and it’s technology is still used today. Although the compass has transformed throughout history, it has always been a symbol for new discovery and forward-thinking. The Research and Design Hub emodies these concepts to create a space designed for innovation. Similar to the compass, home robotics change the way humans interact with their environment, and it is the nexter’s responsibilty to pioneer the next step in this technology. The space provides a wide range of spaces and amenities for employees to collaborate, research, develop, and create in whichever way works best for them. Universal design principles are a main component of the design in order to ensure that all people have a say in the technology of the future. The spacial arrangement is guided by a central compass, with different amenities in corresponding directions. Just as the compass created an opportunity for new human interaction, the northernmost point of the office is home to the cafe and lounge where all users can join forces for presentations, meetings, or socialization. The NEXT Design and Research Hub is the ideal atmosphere to explore the endless innovative solutions that robotics has to offer.
Site
The site for NEXT’s Research and Development Hub is located in the heart of Boston’s Innovation District. This area is rapidly becoming a hub for industries like clean tech, information technology, and mobile media. The Innovation District is the perfect location for NEXT to establish themselves as a leader in cutting-edge robotics and intuative design.
Brand Identity
NEXT is a leading global consumer robot company. Their purpose is to improve everyday living through robotics. The brand embodies the company’s four core values: Humanity Centered, Purpose Driven, Foster Connections, and Think Big and Be the Next. The brand identity is inspired by a compass, an essential tool for new discoveries and relationships. The logo incorporates the company’s core principles to create a design that embodies NEXT’s commitment to the discovery process through technological exploration to foster innovation that provides practical and valuable robot products for the home.
The parti diagram is informed by the cardinal and intercardinal directions found on a compass. The north-facing compass houses the most public spaces while the intercardinal axes serve as pathways between different workspaces and amenities.
Central Compass
Upon entering the lobby, users are directed north towards the central compass, which is located at the intersecion of the two sides of the office. Inspired by how the compass created an opportunity for new human interaction, the northernmost point of the office houses large gathering spaces such as the cafe + lounge, conference room, and one of the project rooms. The cafe + lounge provides a central space for all users to join forces for meetings, socialization, and an alternative work area.
Project Room
The conference room is designed to support large client presentations and pitch space for potential retailers. Steelcase V.I.A. Walls provide whiteboard, pin-up, and Zoom-equipped screen integration for all meeting types.
Conference Room
Adjacent to the conference room is one of the project rooms, which offers all of the same features. This space is a dedicated project space for a cross functional team to use for product development. The space provides additional storage and a large workspace for teams to bring their concepts to life.
Team Space
Each of the teams has their own team space in proximity to the team’s individual workstations. Though this is not an enclosed space, the space can be used for presentations and informal team meetings. Each of the team spaces provides whiteboards, pinup space, monitor, and a table large enough for the group to layout content. These spaces are designed for team members to easily walk up and participate temporarily.

Workstations
Home Office Lab
The Home Office Lab is a mockup space to demonstrate how NEXT home device may work in a simulated home office. The office is designed to be comfortable and realistic for when consumers visit the space and test products.
Inclusive Design Lab
The Inclusive Design Lab is a research space dedicated to user engagement and inclusive design. The Lab is used to lead user-centered research and workshops. NEXT aims to welcome traditionally excluded communities, such as handicapped individuals, to this space in order to learn from their experience. This collaboration space will assist NEXT in their mission to develop products that help all people. The lab is designed with universal design and accessibilty in mind. Modular furniture and casters allow for several room configurations to accommodate a range of activities. The axonometric views to the desmonstrate the Inclusive Design Lab set up for collaboration versus for individual work. Below are some of the Steelcase furnishings that make this room accessible for all.
