ABOUT US
THE SPLENDOUR PROJECT We are a community of friends – clergy and laity – responding to the call of the Holy Catholic Church for a New Evangelisation through the proclamation of Truth, Beauty and Goodness. Convened by the Rev. Deacon Dr Sherman Kuek OFS in 2012, we came together to string together a series of apostolate activities to effectively transmit the Holy Gospel as proclaimed by the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. We transmit the Gospel and the teachings of the Church through:

NO MORE, NO LESS: ARE THE SEVEN SACRAMENTS BIBLICAL? (MYR15/SGD6)
The Catholic Church is the only Christian institution that has a papal office which is so crucial and so universal. However, this office is often misunderstood and wrongly interpreted. In this talk, Deacon Dr. Sherman Kuek explains from Scripture and Tradition how this office came to exist and why its incumbent is accorded a position of primacy among all bishops.
If the Holy Mass is a sacrifice, are we then crucifying Christ repeatedly whenever we celebrate the liturgy? Furthermore, is the Eucharist merely a symbol of Christ as some non-Catholic Christians say? In this talk, Deacon Dr. Sherman Kuek explains why the Church preaches Christ crucified at the Mass and how it is that Christ is present in the Eucharist.
The Catholic Church teaches that the Word of God consists of not just Sacred Scripture but also Sacred Tradition. This believe is often criticised as untenable by others who do not hold to Catholic teaching. In this talk, Deacon Dr. Sherman Kuek explains how Sacred Scripture retains its authority only when Sacred Tradition is accorded its rightful place. He also explains historically how it is that the Catholic Bible has more Old Testament books than the Protestant Bible.
Since the Protestant Reformation, the number of sacraments in the Church has come into question. The Holy Catholic Church continues to hold that there are seven (7) sacraments and that these sacraments are instituted by Christ Himself as revealed in Sacred Scripture. In this talk, Deacon Dr. Sherman Kuek demonstrates from Scripture how it is that the seven (7) sacraments are to be considered biblical.

With the efforts from the Legion of Mary of the Archdiocese of Kuching, the Splendour Project was given an opportunity to give a formation-cum-recollection weekend at Holy Trinity Church, Kenyalang, with over 150 participants. After showing the participants how God’s mercy was with His people all along through Salvation History, Deacon Sherman went on to emphasise the importance of receiving God’s mercy through the sacraments today and how Catholics can be a face of Mercy in our own ways and daily lives for the people around us. The Splendour Team was very happy to see such a long queue at the confessional as many participants realised that it was such a moment of grace to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation from parish priest Fr Patrick Heng, especially during this Year of Mercy. The Splendour Project works closely with the Legion Of Mary of the Archdiocese of Kuching in providing faith formation for its members and other lay faithful several times each year.
The Evangelisation Commision of Melaka-Johor Diocese has collaborated with the Splendour Project in conjunction with the Jubilee Year of Mercy to organise this formation-cumrecollection weekend at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Over 110 parishioners were present. The weekend was concluded with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. The Chaplet of the Divine Mercy was prayed by the participants, who also offered their intentions for this special year before the Lord.

2016 FORMATION EVENTS SPLENDOUR FORMATION EVENTS JUL - DEC 2016 It is often said, “The world needs mercy”. But why? And in what way does the world need mercy, since it doesn’t often feel like it is in need of any mercy? In this formation-cum-recollection, we will be covering the following topics like ‘Understanding God’s Mercy’, ‘Jesus, the Face of God’s Mercy’, ‘Receiving God’s Mercy’, ‘The World’s Need of Mercy’, and ‘Offering God’s Mercy’. These sessions will be interspersed with group reflections devotional prayers to the Divine Mercy, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction, and also the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation for those who feel moved to receive the sacrament. As there is still about 5 months to go before the Jubilee Year of Mercy ends, the Splendour team urges you to not miss this special talk this year. There are about seven more Mystery of Mercy sessions scheduled for the rest of the year. Besides that, we will also continue with our various other formation events and formation-based pilgrimages for the rest of the year. YEAR OF MERCY
YOUR ULTIMATE SURVIVAL KIT
FOR THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY
14 | COMMUNICARE
YEAR OF MERCY So you know it’s the Year of Mercy this year - the Pope has announced it, your Bishop has determined the Holy Doors, your parish priest has mentioned it and the other parishioners can’t stop talking about it. You couldn’t possibly miss the almond shape Year of Mercy logo somewhere! Well, if you haven’t heard about the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy then, in the famous words of Shakespeare, “Get thee to a nunnery!” Regardless, it is June now and we’re already halfway through this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy; about time we ask ourselves what have I done so far for this year? Walked through the designated Door of Mercy? Clothed the naked? Feed the hungry? Gained indulgences? If this all sounds like Greek to you, don’t panic. This is where we help. We present to you this comprehensive survival kit for the Year of Mercy and hopefully,
there’s still time for you to gain that indulgence! What’s The Jubilee Year? The tradition of officiating the Holy Year every 25 years has been around since 700 years ago. It’s a special year for the church to call for conversion and repentance through various celebrations and pilgrimages. It’s sort of like the Church’s way to remind lay people that the Church is still here, offering sacraments, special opportunities to experience God’s grace. What’s so “Extraordinary?” The “extraordinary” thing about this Holy Year is that it was called unexpectedly by Pope Francis, hence, breaking the tradition of a 25 year cycle since the last one was called by St John Paul II in the year 2000. This year, Pope Francis has decided that the word “mercy” should be emphasised although, in the past, the Jubilee Years are
ubiquitous with Mercy. It is also the third “extraordinary” jubilee since the tradition began. What’s with the Holy Door then? Traditionally, the Holy Years are marked with pilgrimages to Rome whereby pilgrims are welcome to walk through the Holy Doors available at the four major papal basilicas. These special doors are only open during the Jubilee Years and are cemented shut until the next Jubilee Year comes along. But c’mon let’s be honest here, not everyone can afford a plane ticket to Rome, not with the economy nowadays. Which is why Pope Francis has decided that the Jubilee Year be celebrated on the local level as well, instructing local Bishops to call for their own Holy Doors. So what does the Holy Door do? Before you think the Holy Door dispenses some sort of magical pixie dust, it doesn’t. Pilgrims who do walk through the doors can gain plenary indulgences as it symbolises a person’s leaving behind of the world and entering into the presence of God. The question then we should be asking is, what should we do before walking through the Holy Doors of Mercy to gain the said indulgence?
<< The iconic logo: The Year of Mercy logo as drawn by Jesuit Father Marko I. Rupnik and chosen by Pope Francis as the official logo for the year.
COMMUNICARE | 15
YEAR OF MERCY First, what’s an indulgence? Contrary to its popular association with chocolate, an indulgence is actually “… a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly dispose gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispense and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints. An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin.” (CCC 1471) In other words, a partial indulgence is a partial remission of sins while plenary indulgence is a full remission of sins. Walking through the Holy Door Walking through the Holy Door effectively requires you to be in a state of grace to receive the indulgence. This simply entails that you have received the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation (confession) and received Holy Communion. Upon walking through the Holy Door, you can pray for the Pope’s intention of the month or alternatively, say one Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be. But here’s the tricky part, you have to be completely detached from sin (or try your very best) to gain a PLENARY indulgence. Failing to do so will only grant yourself a partial indulgence. However, you can obtain a plenary indulgence once daily and multiple partial indulgences a day.
And don’t worry, walking out or backwards of the Holy Door has no reversal effect whatsoever. Sidenote: indulgences can be gained for ourselves and for the souls in purgatory as well. Steps for a good Confession Another thing that many lay faithful sometimes miss the spot with is the Sacrament of Reconciliation, or more commonly known as Confession. Did you know, there are prerequisites to determine if a Confession was valid or not.
“
An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin. - CCC 1471
While you pick your jaw up from the floor, be reminded that a good preparation for any Confession is a thorough Examination of Conscience. After that, it’s time to make the actual Confession with an ordained priest. Not to worry, the Seal of Confessional is taken very seriously by all priests and is a sin if broken. Contrition in the penitent’s part is also essential during a Confession and is usually expressed as the Act of Contrition. The priest will normally then give the penitent some form of penance as a mean of amendment also known as satisfaction before giving the absolution whereby the penitent is granted pardon and peace by God through
the priest. Pro tip: the priest wouldn’t mind if your brought in a mini guidebook to the confessional. What about Works of Mercy? As we receive mercy in the form of sacraments and indulgences from God, it is only logical that we be the face of mercy in our world, which is easily doable via various works of Mercy, a concept not foreign to most of us. There are generally two types of works of mercy; spiritual and corporal (refer next page). Again, these works of mercy are not only called for or valid during this special year of Mercy but rather, a reminder to start what we have not and to continue what we have. It’s the absolute simplest way to live out our calling as Catholics through these continuous acts of Mercy. On the same note, works of mercy also gains us indulgences and as far as we continuously need to gain indulgences for our sins, we should also think of ways to sustain these works of Mercy. A note on Pilgrimages Generally, lay faithful who make an effort to go on any pilgrimage, whether it be to walk through the Holy Door or to pray at holy shrines and churches, will also gain indulgences. Discerning for a spiritually beneficial pilgrimage is not an easy task. Which is why we’ve compiled a list that could help you identify good quality pilgrimages in the market. ENCOUNTERING JESUS CHRIST IN THE HOLY LAND MARCH 2016
^ Group photo with the Old City of Jerusalem in the back
Due to the overwhelming response for our trip to the Holy Land in November 2015, we decided to accomodate by organising organise another trip for our friends. This time, 45 pilgrims joined the Splendour Project on a 10 days pilgrimage from 29 Feb - 10 Mar 2016, exploring, learning and praying at the most significant shrines and holy sites in the Holy Land. Using the Four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John as the basis of his formation, Deacon Sherman has designed the trip as such that the Gospels will come alive as pilgrims step foot into the actual places where Jesus and His Apostles 20 | COMMUNICARE
Interspersed with the teachings of the Catholic faith with daily faith formation and verified information from our chosen tour guide, we always put the spiritual benefits of our pilgrims as one of our top priorities. As we constantly review our trips and strive to make each one better from the previous one, we have included a new site to visit in our itinerary for this trip. Under the formation of Deacon Sherman, the pilgrims had a rare chance of visiting Caesarea of Philippi, located about an hour’s drive north from the city of Jerusalem. This natural rock formation not only houses the spring which waters

the Jordan river, but is also the spot where Jesus appointed Peter as the head of His church. Apart from that, the pilgrims were taken on an emotional journey through the bustling streets of Jerusalem during the Way of the Cross all the way to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre or better known as Golgotha. Besides Holy Mass being celebrated each day at selected shrines, sacraments like Confession was also readily available with Fr Philip Odhiambo, who was the accompanying priest for the trip.
