Virtual Environments

I have chose a a leaf pattern to start with as my original source. I picked up the stem system that is involved in a leaf pattern. The characteristic of a stem system is that it diffuses a lot. Self-multiplying causes a stem system to form a Y-shape. In terms of analytical drawings, I felt the balance drawing particularlly shows although the stem system is diffusing, it still has a balance logic in terms of when and in what angle while diffusing.

Virtual Environments

After building a paper model, it allows me to develop the pattern. Simply just lifting the level of my Y-shapes, trying to play with the angles and directions of the Y-shapes while joining them together.

Virtual Environments

Then I started to investigate possible forms and patterns that this Y-shape branching recipe can create. Trees are an obvious example as the branches shares the exact same rule.

Virtual Environments

By using the method of ‘move’, Y-shapes can form hexagons. Just like beehives, Y-shapes have the potential to create a very unique structure. That got me to set my recipe for my pattern: Self diffusing Y-shapes, during the process of diffusion, reducing the scale of Y-shapes.

Virtual Environments

Afterwards I moderate the form of my lantern design. By adding the element of level in the hexagon pattern, allows me to transform a 2D pattern into a 3D volume.

Virtual Environments

Then I played with the vertical levelling of the pattern. Sticking one on top of another, but changing the angle of each single pattern. After finish setting up the patterns, capturing the light effect of the combined patterns.

Virtual Environments

Y-Shapes are often used as a base element for designs. These three are examples from Big, a Denmark Architecture Firm. These examples doesn’t only shows that Y-shapes can be developed into unique patterns, but also unexpected light effects.

Virtual Environments

Fractal are mathematical sets that can be graphed into self-similar patterns. Basically the logic of fractals are self multiplying. During the process of multiplying, the scale of each Y-shape reduces.

Virtual Environments

These are some of the examples of Fractals.

Virtual Environments

Fractals can be very different from one and another. Light effects can be manipulated and instantly changing the visual side of it. Although sharing the same pattern system, through different light approaches, fractals can be very different. (Base element has a larger volume, therefore better potential to play with light effects.)

Virtual Environments

During the process of studying fractals as a pattern system, I realise that in order to add more depth in my base element (Y-shape), I have to develop the Y-shape from 2D to 3D form, in adding volume in the pattern.

Design Scheme

The design scheme for my lantern is to use the 3D form of Y-shape, following the system of branching out and diffuse. Virtual Environments

This is a clay model, showing the initial lantern form that appears in my imagination. From one point, spreading out and blossoms.

Virtual Environments

For light effect purposes, I added an element of layering in my lantern design. Layering will allows the lantern to generate refraction, releasing a more unique light effect.

Virtual Environments

While considering the lantern and the relationship with my arm, I realise that the shape of my lantern should be lengthful. Following the picture shown, the form of my lantern will be lengthful, but at the same time blossoming and diffusing.

Virtual Environments

Following my recipe of the pattern development, my lantern will be created by a series of diffusing 3D Y-shapes, shrinking it sizes while diffusing. Until its size reduced to the size of two palms combining, the rule of shrinking will be reversed and the size of the 3D Y-shapes will be enlarging.
