Hello, my name is Matthew Wilde. I am currently studying Product and Furniture Design in my second year at Nottingham Trent University. I have a passion for design and thrive on the process of experimentation. I tend towards the view of “lets try it and see if it works. When it doesn’t try something new and when it does make it better. I hope this makes my designs rather unpredictable, but this process is what I love.

Donkey Four

Purely Practical, and no further.

The Brief The Brief for this project was to design and prototype a new version of the classic penguin donkeys. This project was conducted in conjunction with Isokon Plus company. We were limited to using ply wood and our design had to be manufacturable through CNC machining.

Donkey Three The Yzumis, Isokon

The company, Isokon are the original producers of the Donkey. As a result it was important to gain an understanding of the company in order to replicate their design ethos. Over the years the three Donkeys that have been produced have been function focused. This function is highly specific; to store the paper back penguin books in a small portable storage unit.

The Brief

In this project we were given the brief to design a task lamp for the Design retail company SCP. It had to be done in a contemporary style and be suitable for the companies market.

The making process for this project primarily involved sketches. However at the start we had to gain an understanding of the company. Later on the design progressed almost purely through models.

The head of the lamp can be moved up and down the stand in any location or orientation. It can be removed all together.

Sleek Contemporary design for t he modern market.

Pen Pot

Practical, Beautiful, Playful

The Brief The task was to design a product or piece of furniture for the London Retailer Heal’s. This was a very open brief however the design had to be made through wood fabrication.

A single piece of hand or CNC turned wood. Produced in a variety of different woods to suit any environment or style.

Simple celebration of wood combined with craftsmanship and elegant design. The perfect addition to your home workspace.

The Brief The brief for this project was to design a piece of furniture for the growing online retail market. We would have to research the current trends and styles to suit, and chose a suitable retailer for our project.

My Process

The initial inspiration started by looking at a few designers. To add an additional narrative I created mood boards of fungus as a starting point.

During the middle stage of development the design started drawing ideas from designers such as Farg and Blanche and Max Frommeld.

The design didn’t stop development until very near the end of the project. This meant that much of the manufacture was based on intuition, which was fortunately well founded.

The Tension Table started out as inspiration from a fungus. As the design progressed it drew ideas from other sources such as other designers of a more experimental nature. However through out the entire process the design has kept something reflecting that initial source. The tension comes from a combination of the upward spring force from the fins and the downward force of the ropes.

Story Telling Drink Set

Lose yourself in another world through the power of narrative.

The Brief This project was intended to be highly personal. We had to pick a topic of research and then design three projects based on that research. My topic was the rituals around listening to stories.

The mug is the link to my childhood. Its large size make you feel more like a child. Its form is all about comfort. Draw warmth into your hands with soft round feel.

The cymbal links all three products to the main narrative. Marking the beginning and end of the time I listen to a story.

Lotus Sofa Bed Practicality with out compromising style Group project with Sam Rollit

The Brief This was a live brief for a company called Springvale. In pairs we had to design a 2 person sofa bed and reinvent the current 3 fold sofa bed mechanism..

A contemporary sleek looking design with a brand new way of thinking. The design was inspired by origami and how a flat sheet could be folded into a sofa. The folding sheet is achieved by sewing individual carbon fibre panels into a fabric sleeve allowing the seams to fold.

Much of the work went into designing the telescoping frame mechanism and rotation system. This was a new challenge that taxed both our intellects.

The way that the foldis are arranged means that limited force is needed to keep the sofa in its upright position. This meant we could use simple fastening methods, like velcro.

Sound Targeting Speaker Predicting the future of audio

The Brief The brief was to design a concept for an application of a future technology. The technology we chose had to have a justifiable basis in current technology. This project was mostly focused on the initial secondary research into our chosen technology.

The initial stages involved finding a new technology that we felt could be developed into a product. Development was mostly through sketches. However research was always the main driver. The final stages progressed through modelling and the search for a suitable brand.

This sound targeting system allows touch screen technology to be used on the projecting surfaces.

P.A.L is a portable blue tooth speaker that uses highly directional sound. Select faces to direct sound.

Kayak Sketc hes From an avid interest in kayaking, occasionally for practice and entertainment I sketch concepts for kayaks and canoes. Here are some of those sketches from me trying different techniques of sketching and rendering.

Princess Yacht, 5m Tender Concept As Designed part of toancompliment application for a placement with the Princess Yacht 40m class. Princess yachts, I did a quick project for tospeed design a This tender has sleek strong lines designed 5mandTender toThe compliment their 40m elegance. smooth contemporary style yacht. gives

the interior both luxury and comfort.
