PART 1

Although Northbridge contains an abundance of highly rated attractions and may appear to be the most activated site, there is a great social divide. Through numerous surveys we have identified the need for a more diverse ‘mix’ of people as well as a strategy to activate strategic points within Northbridge in order to revitalise the urban life.

Detached

Divided

Northbridge contains an abundance of highly rated attractions. Due to an expanding city the spatial gap between these attractions creates a problem.

This spatial divide has lead to a social divide between people.

/ 07

Disconnected

Connected

Safer routes have been identified, but they are interrupted by dangerous areas.

Using available air space, ground space and building faรงades these safe routes can be connected.

The notion of ‘play’ is explored through a dynamic structure that activates the day and night. Lock lane is activated throughout the day, a place for children to play, a resting place for parents and passer-bys. During the night, a terrace space appears, a dance floor and seating space, underneath an illuminated structure that invites movement through the space. A public space for the community, a playground for children and adults.

The structures form is created based on the movement through the site and the mechanics of its functions. The structural details and explored, ex-

amining the projects impact on the built environment and its ability to activate the site.

/ 30

DAY A ‘free standing’ structure invites pedestrians and families to enter the alleyway. Polycarbonate blocks provide a place parents can rest, enjoying the natural shade provided by the structures surroundings while the organic structure provides a place for children to enjoy — a playground.

SITE The sites boundaries parameters are created, ensuring the structure is integrated into the alleyway without obstruction.

DIVIDE Two surfaces are created, the top a surface dealing with the functions, the bottom a surface providing structural stability.

FUNCTION The top surface analyses movement through the site dictating the ‘playgrounds’ functions.
