SLICE

Competition: Art Prison (Italy)

design brief: art exhibition center with a restaurant, hotel- & atelier spaces

Ryerson University, Toronto Prof. Albert C. Smith Winter 2018 Being a pivot for artistry, the SLICE aims to embrace the bridge between civilization and nature, while providing a stage to reminiscent on the history of the island of Favignana. It anchors the Castle of Santa Caterina while expressing the incredible views that the island has to offer, creating a metaphorical opportunity to reflect back on the castle’s history of being a prison while having an outlook on the present development of free-expression. The SLICES’s geometric structure is inspired by the local limestone mining sites whilst mirroring the contour-lines of the hill. The “360° sliced” structure’s intention is to best-represent the food, lifestyle and cultural practices of the island, and it achieves it through the curated layout. It provides the possibility, to not only experience the art, but to have an insight to the art’s process, playing well with the theme of the SLICE’s stage of reflection and the implementations of the modern present. New Central Library of Germany

Reconsidering the American Memorial Library B.A. Thesis Chair of Emerging Technologies visiting Prof. Max Dudler Summer 2016 Under the guidance of Max Dudler we engaged ourselves in the topic of redeveloping the urbanistical constellation surrounding the American Memorial Library in Berlin. The heritage building is still used as a small library, but is actually more of a heritage sight within the city. It tells a story of remission and hope. It was a gift of the USA to Germany after the war. In this challenging built context, the New Central Library of Germany should be placed - in discourse with the actual ongoing design competition. Conceptually we were inspired by the image of stacked books. The library spaces are all oriented around a central reading room, which steps down several times, allowing great views upon the historic site of the American Memorial Library. The further up the spaces are located, the more silent and more bright they are. Collaboration with Sebastian Seidl

Hillside Chapel MEDS - Meeting of Design Students

Interdisciplinary Architecture & Design festival, Lebanon 2018

The Sliding Chapel is a non-denominational space for reflection, located on the grounds of the ancient citadel of Byblos in the Lebanon. It was designed by an Irish designer called Kieran Donnellan and built by a group of participants of the international design festival, MEDS. The chapel's elegant slender form is designed to give the pavilion the appearance of sliding down the hillside. This is achieved by giving the roof the same angle as the slope on which the pavilion sits. This lends the building the eccentric appearance of being both anchored and sliding at the same time. Internally, the slope of the ceiling encourages visitors to take a seat by creating a sense of compression in section as they approach. Upon sitting down, visitors are rewarded with a stunning sea-view. The reason for the tapering plan was to define an intimate entrance on one side and a generous view on the other. The concept of apparent movement and the associated energy informs the materiality of the heavily charred exterior skin. This was charred using the traditional Japanese shou-sugiban technique of tying 3 boards into a chimney and setting a fire at the base. All of the wood used in the chapel is re-cycled. Most of it was originally in the form of shipping containers. As the international director of the Organization and Tutor-Support (OTS) group, I was part of the fine-tuning of the construction on site and the construction management. In Bucharest, I taught a workshop on the principles of Design-Thinking and handcrafting timber constructions together with two friends, who are Industrial Design graduates from Basel (CH). In the Muzeul Satului Dimitrie Gusti, an ethnographic museum devoted to Romanian village life, we built a public intervention next to the hundreds of historic peasant farm-homes and impressive wooden churches. Inspired by the local spiritual idea of the “tree of life we formed a bench around a central tree within the built context. After an extensive research part on the local hand-carved ornaments, we recognized that there was hardly any form of explanation given, so we decided to engrave the most intriguing ornaments into the bench with explanations of their meanings. collaboration with: Sebastian In-Albon, Christian Lauchenauer
