Designing a timber pavilion, inspired by the phrase “cell within a cell”. A difference in flooring material was chosen to distinguish the two cells from each other. To design a semi-permeable outer layer of the cell, the alternating studs form a pattern of shadows depending on the solar altitude. Location: Pinakothek der Moderne Munich, Germany. Team:

At home in the city

Pasing, between city and village Chair of urbanism and housing Prof. Krucker, Prof. Bates Summer 2014

The challenge was designing urban housing on the edge of the city center of Munich, close to the ever-growing suburban parts on the west side of the city. Urbanistically, the urban block was to be added to while still allowing pedestrians to cross through. Near a small creek with a historic beer garden a bit down south, the mid-rise complex is designed to maximize the views along the river by its meandering shape. Two atria are placed on the northern and southern parts to enhance the natural lighting of the wider parts. Collaboration with Sebastian Seidl

participative art project in the redevelopment area Neuaubing-Westkreuz (Munich)

The art project focused on kicking off a process of redevelopment in the area of Neuaubing - Westkreuz (Munich). The aim was to show, through channeled viewpoints, the existing natural beauty and on the contrary the hideous industrial interventions that had taken place there over the past decades.

The project was part of a second public intervention located in the heart of the historic city center of Burghausen. The angles of the channeled views were adjusted to show some of the most famous exterior wallpaintings of the surrounding built context.

The masterclass of interior architecture, by Prof. Andrea Grimaldi, was focused on row houses in Rome. On two sides there were two-story concrete walls as a given structure to deal with. To complete the building, two facades, the roof and the internal nook between the existing concrete walls had to be filled with a wooden structure.

In the midst of the increasing refugee immigration in Germany, cities like Munich are exploring new possibilities to solve the increased need for housing. Following the idea of not building temporary shelter, but quality built, mid-rise houses, we designed an urban housing complex consisting of three interventions. To enhance communication between the new residents and the existing local inhabitants we aimed to break up the urban block to build a public square in the middle. Public uses on the pedestrian level complement four to five stories of housing. It is designed in a way to house families or groups of people as a flat-share style.

Design-Build workshop: wooden shelter public intervention

National Park Tara, Serbia MEDS - Meeting of Design Students Summer 2015

One of the projects in this summer school was to build a wooden shelter for hikers on a mountaintop in the Nationalpark Tara, in Serbia - shelter against rain and the heavy snowfalls during the winter. We challenged ourselves to construct the wooden cabin without a single screw. We learned about handcrafting different kinds of wooden joints and only used nails for the cladding and the roof-shingles. The preferred use of hand tools made it a great experience and taught us a lot about the material.

Stuttgart 2.1

Revitalizing the industrial harbor of Stuttgart Chair of Building Technology and Climate Responsive Design Prof. Thomas Auer, Visiting Prof. Stefan Behnisch Winter 2016/17

Collaboration with: Sebastian Seidl, Sam Thomas, Romano Chung

In order to revitalize the industrial Stuttgart harbor, several sites of gravel and scrap metal storage were mapped out and turned into a interconnected system of small to medium scale parks. A water-cleaning system is thought to be installed in the new center of the quartier. Four pedestrian bridges with bike lanes were added to ensure the connectivity of the surrounding villages. The highway on the western part of the docks is being put underground the new hill-side park. This is where a built intervention was designed. To find an improved form, the classical urban block was optimized through several iterative processes to maximize the views onto the water and the surrounding vineyards. Maximized daylight intake and ventilation, as well as outdoor comfort factors played a major role.

A new cultural center had to be designed in the heart of the historic center of Freising. The program consists out a cinema with two theaters, a bar/bistro and an exhibition space for modern art on the top level. The cinema spaces are thought of as a black box within and beneath the exhibition space, that’s flooded with light. Dealing with the built context we decided to re-define the common double pitched roof with parts of compact pilasters and fully glassed stripes. The play of light and shadows during the day turns into a shining building at night, attracting focus to the new cultural center.

The proposed, highly diverse, communal area provides space for multiple functions: kitchen, dining space, reading corners, study spaces and/or entertainment spaces. The core of the building is a big atrium. It connects the floors vertically and hosts several collaborative “cloud-spaces”. There are several possibilities to use these: from playing an instrument to hosting yoga-sessions or workouts to working on collaborative group projects or hosting gatherings of students.

MOVIE ROOM BEDROOM

The residence is to be designed for Ryerson University students, with consideration to the diversity of individuals in age, ethnicity, ability and family composition. In order to give different opportunities to these different groups of individuals the designs aim to offer a broad spectrum of spatial constellations within the program. The flexibility of accommodating singles and young couples (even if they have a child) within the same cluster is one of the challenges and is thought to be solved by the triplet-unit spaces gathered around the spatial threshold at the entrance. The three rooms could easily be combined to a bigger unit to accommodate this requirement. This way students could continue living in these spaces, even after graduating as young professionals. This provides opportunity for an added academic exchange of thought to the students’ living in this kind of residence. Aiming for a diverse floor plan, the design is focused on a mix of units within a cluster that is comprised by each floor. Through the clusters & units the common-shared space flows; provides several other spaces for informal meetings and casual encounters.

In Bucharest, I taught a workshop on handcrafting timber constructions with two friends, who are Industrial Design graduates from Basel (CH). In the Muzeul Satului Dimitrie Gusti, an ethnographic museum devoted to Romanian village life, we built a public intervention next to the hundreds of historic peasant farm-homes and impressive wooden churches. Inspired by the local spiritual idea of the “tree of life we formed a bench around a central tree within the built context. After an extensive research part on the local hand-carved ornaments, we recognized that there was hardly any form of explanation given, so we decided to engrave the most intriguing ornaments into the bench with explanations of their meanings. collaboration with: Sebastian In-Albon, Christian Lauchenauer

As one of the leaders of the International Organizing Team, I managed and helped to realize several projects taking place during our summer school in Gent, Belgium. I was occupied with the development of the workshops and consulting the tutors. For this project, a local urban farming collective approached us to build a roof structure for their summer gatherings. It should provide some shelter from the sun while blending in to the already existing farming deck. Tutors: Andreas Vanysacker, Andriy Bruyninckx
