The R-Chair (named after the side
The front legs, arms and back rails form a continuous ribbon line that hugs the upholstery and the human body just like a loving embrace. The inside edges are softened with a large radius, as this is where the body contacts the frame of the chair. The chair was designed with high-end quality in mind, but most importantly, comfort. It is not centered in a single design style thus environments.

Wedge 2013
Furniture items aid in the signifying of the phenomenology of home. Certain furniture items, such as a coat rack, delineate the threshold between work life and home life. The act of arriving home helps us to separate these two worlds and to feel safe in our intimate surroundings. The Wedge stand is based around creating awareness of a physical interaction with an object that is otherwise overlooked. It is getting the user to slow down and to appreciate the way in which we use objects and the bond that it creates.

Wedge can be disassembled for shipping without the need for tools. Materials that are able to develop a patina as well as put up with the rigours of everyday use have been used in order to increase the longevity of the product. Wedge is manufactured by industry within Australia utilising local resources and skills.

Offset 2013
The Offset table was the result of a colaboration between members of both UTAS and RMIT. The focus of the project was to utilise salvaged timber, obtained from two sawmills in Tasmania,that was either being burned or under utilised. Each group member put forward a concept that was then selected by an industry representative for further development.
The table was protoyped and further developed by three members of UTAS. All timber used in the project was deemed as salvage waste. Processes pack style of construction was used to keep packaging requirements to a minimum in order to minimise excess energy in its production and distribution.

Rockpool 2012
The inspiration for Rockpool comes from a simple river stone and the intrinsic connection that we, as humans, have with organic objects. It was conceived as a ritual object that taps into the subconscious activities that we perform every day, such as putting keys into a bowl. It’s raw and honest simplicity means that it can be used for a multitude of ‘rituals’ and can connect with a wider audience.

Cumulus 2012
Cumulus was the result of a ‘High Priority Desk’ brief. It is an abstraction of a cloud and the feeling in which people feel whilst being creative, and able to achieve the impossible. The tactile nature of the desk increases the physical connection that the user has with the object. The joy of using an appealing object or piece of furniture puts the user in a free and uninhibited state which can lead to clarity and innovation in their thought.

Fairedline 2011
Fairedline was conceived through an investigation into the properties of ‘line’ and an analysis of why certain characteristics of line are appealing. The form was inspired by certain muscle car shapes, masculine forms and egocentric ergonomics to create the lounge chair; fairedline (a take on the classic ford fairlane).
The chair utilises skills learnt in CNC and CAD technology in order to design and make male-female moulds for stack-laminations. The legs are hand shaped and faired to create a rolling and twisting arm/ leg structure, creating a sense of dynamism and movement in the piece.

Curriculum Vitae
Matt J Pearson is a furniture design student currently located in Launceston, Tasmania. Having undertaken a Bachelor of Environmental Design at the UTAS School of Architecture and Design, Matt is striving to establish himself within the wider object design. Matt utilises a hands-on approach in order to gain a greater understanding of the Matt’s goal is to obtain a broad range of skills through an investigation of process and material, as well as theoretical analysis. Matt is interested in the small achievements in design that actually solve problems, no matter how small; the idea that the design of everyday objects can enhance a users life. He tries to create objects that become a part of the family home. Objects that are irreplaceable, indispensable and a self-extension of the user because of the enjoyment and the memories that they provide. Matt consciously thinks about the social responsibility that designers have to limit the throwaway nature of furniture and the need to produce high quality items that meet and exceed their expected usage cycles.
