The Ultimate Backyard Oasis
Grills that thrill, sensational outdoor kitchen suites, and gorgeous outdoor flooring set the stage for unforgettable backyard memories
As the days stretch longer, the rippling pool beckons us in while the irresistible aroma of tantalizing food wafts from the grill— and we know that summer has officially arrived. One bite into a crispy, sweet corn on the cob with the perfect amount of char and smokiness is what our taste buds have been longing for all year. Along with the welcome sunshine, summer brings us together with family and friends for that memorable backyard barbeque to celebrate with exquisite food, in our private backyard paradise. To create the perfect patio get-together, a superb grill, and a beautiful outdoor kitchen and entertainment space set the stage for refreshing cocktails and succulently seared filet mignon. Grills and barbeques of all kinds have come a long way since the 1950s, and so have our outdoor cooking areas, with designs and styles just as alluring as the finest indoor kitchens.
Today’s outdoor cooking suites can provide all the comfort and amenities of their indoor counterparts while maintaining astonishing durability and looking sophisticated and stylish. Fine cabinetry along with luxury stone or porcelain tile paving can elevate your outdoor entertaining experience, creating an inviting outdoor retreat worthy of all your family celebrations. The Experts at Aitoro Appliance, Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens, and Bergen Brick share what’s new and exciting in the world of outdoor cooking, designer kitchen entertainment spaces, and exceptionally durable, yet gorgeous, outdoor pavers to revamp your backyard.
Aitoro Appliance
Tony Aitoro and his family-owned and operated store, Aitoro Appliance, which
serves the Northeast with high-end luxury appliances including cooking ranges and the finest grills available. Tony is known for throwing the best parties at his store, with professional chefs demonstrating the remarkable advances in grilling options today. We asked owner and grilling expert Tony Aitoro to share some exciting updates in outdoor cooking, just as he was getting ready to host another one of his famous parties for interior designers, architects, and builders.
Tony tells us about some grills the chefs will be demonstrating live in the store, “I have five chefs cooking outdoors next for the event night on XO grills, Kalamazoo grills, Lynk’s grills, and DCS grills. One is wood-fired, and it’s called Argentine gaucho cooking—it’s the best! We have diverse types of wood to enhance the flavors, especially oak. We start the flame with gas, and as the coals get nice and evenly hot, we cook a large prime rib on this one. It goes on a rotisserie, it rotates as we watch and enjoy, the results are amazing.”
Among all the quality grilling appliances available at Aitoro Appliance, Tony shares the item that has been the undisputed winner for the past two years and is still in high demand, “What’s popular outdoors right now are pizza ovens. Over the last two years, the demand for pizza ovens has increased very quickly. Watching all the cool cooking shows, everyone wants to be like the backyard pizza guy. We have pizza ovens from $600 to $20,000 and they are a lot of fun to cook with.”
If pizza baked fresh outdoors sounds intimidating, Tony shares some tips to encourage even the most novice backyard culinary artist, “There are ways of
shortcutting. You can buy dough and roll it out yourself. Go to Trader Joe’s, they are regular and gluten-free, you roll it out and add your ingredients to it. It’s better than any pizza place you could visit, and it’s in your backyard. Once you get the oven heated, pizza only takes a few minutes. We have both gas and wood pizza ovens. People love the wood to create that traditional woodfired Italian flavor of the old country. It’s a very relaxing backyard activity.”
Relaxing with a cool drink, grilling, and catching up with friends is the highlight of the summer season. We asked Tony to share how grills have improved over the years, “Grills have improved a lot. They’re made with really high-quality stainless steel and powerful adjustable burners. Some burners have an infrared direct heat option, which sears the food quickly and maintains moisture—so your food stays nice and juicy. There are also smart technology grills that use Wi-Fi and can be controlled by your phone. You can set an exact temperature and it can cook for hours and hours. This technology makes everyone an expert. We live in the Northeast, but barbecuing is still popular year-round. I’m amazed at how much we do outdoors.”
Choosing an appliance for an outdoor kitchen can seem overwhelming. Tony shares his expert tips on selecting the best, “It has a lot to do with your lifestyle. Some people may have the time after work to light the fire and take their time grilling. For people who work full time, they want to come home, and quickly put a piece of chicken on the grill – turn the gas on and go. On the weekends, people have the time for fun backyard entertaining. We can help gauge what type of grill you need if you entertain a lot. Here in New England, we cook a lot of seafood as well – it’s nice outdoors, it keeps all the smells outside. We also have a lot of clients who cook breakfast outdoors.
It’s so nice to cook bacon and eggs outside. Another popular option is the pellet-feed grill that automatically supplies the grill pellets continuously. You don’t have to bother with it at all, and in four to six hours, you have this incredible pulled pork without any work or trouble.”
Outdoor appliances have to be able to withstand harsh weather. Tony explains how one of his grills survived some incredible natural disasters, “Most of what we sell is stainless steel grill or marine-grade aluminum cabinet. That means the box is stainless steel, the burners are stainless steel, and the grates are stainless steel. One grill I have is 17 years old, and this grill has been underwater during two separate hurricanes, Sandy, and Irene. Submerged under three feet of saltwater and thrown around. I just rinsed it off with a hose and still use it.”
Tony is truly the grilling expert, we asked him to reveal his secrets for a highly functional outdoor cooking suite, “When I built my suite, one thing I thought was important was an outdoor trash receptacle in drawers. I have storage below because I cook a lot. I have quite a few utensils, long thongs, and long spatulas. I need long durable and heavy-duty utensils because the grills we’re talking about have intense heat.

Bergen Brick, Stone & Tile
Imagine the ideal relaxed, luxurious backyard space. Visions of a cool turquoise pool, multifunctional grill, and lovely outdoor kitchen come to mind, set amongst exquisitely beautiful outdoor flooring to complete the perfect picture. Todd Zecher of Bergen Brick, Stone & Tile collaborates with walk-in clients as well as top designers and contractors when they need fine-quality porcelain tile, high-quality
brick, or exceptional stone. Todd has specialized in brick, stone, and tile for over 45 years, and is the trusted expert for clients looking to uplift their backyard spaces in the Northeast and beyond.
Their exterior showroom includes about 5,000 square feet of impressive outdoor showroom space. What clients appreciate when visiting is the generous amount of tile, stone, and brick used for displays. It’s hard to visualize what a selected piece of material will look like with just one sample alone, that’s why Todd created abundant displays for clients to get a visual picture of the material set all together—as it would be in their own homes.
Their exciting selections of products are extensive, with diverse materials, sizes, colors, and textures to choose from. Stone, tile, or brick can be chosen to integrate with the existing house color or contrasting colors can be used to create a visual pop, bringing your backyard to life. Todd tells us that clients enjoy mixing and matching products, using pavers for the ground and tile for the walls, for example. “A lot of people create roof decks now with pavers. We use the pedestal system to elevate the tile from the roof deck; we level the porcelain tile on the roof and then you can walk on it. We do a lot of residential porcelain tile where the top floor penthouse has various outdoor areas.”
What makes porcelain tile such a popular choice? Todd shares, “Porcelain tile is acid rain resistant, stain resistant and it doesn’t absorb any moisture.” The interesting difference between stone compared to porcelain tile, Todd explains, is that stone is more susceptible to stains. Think of the occasional red wine being accidentally spilled on the fine stone flooring. Porcelain tile
will withstand the spill, whereas stone will need to be cleaned quickly. Porcelain tile is also frost and mold-resistant, which means it’s maintenance-free and the color never fades. During the harsher climate of winter, porcelain tile will not be damaged by rock salt being sprinkled on it. It’s guaranteed to be hardy and beautiful for many years to come, so it’s easy to see why porcelain tile has quickly become an outdoor flooring favorite.
Natural stone is Mother Nature’s original option that many clients appreciate and gravitate to at Bergen Brick, Stone & Tile. Whether irregular flagstones are desired for a rustic look, or an elegant, refined layout is being fashioned—natural stone options are abundant in the showroom for an earthy experience. Will all these incredibly beautiful and long-lasting outdoor flooring options, what did Todd select for his own home? “My wife selected natural stone; some people like the natural stone choices.” Clients are encouraged to make an appointment to browse and tour the fantastic outdoor showroom at Bergen Brick, Stone & Tile to get a feel for their spectacular selections and speak to an expert on what the best selection may be for their style and taste.
Long after juicy watermelons are no longer in season, updating your backyard patio escape will offer delights for many seasons to come. An excellent high-quality grill, elevated outdoor kitchen suite, and luxurious outdoor flooring set the stage for any festivity. Simply add your favorite food, drinks, and your favorite people, and watch the magic effortlessly happen in your own chic private backyard oasis.

XO Grills / Aitoro ApplianceThe Red Lion Inn has stood as a pillar of the Berkshires culture for 250 years. Throughout its long and celebrated history, the hotel has always worked not just to provide comfort to its guests but also to amplify the history and heritage of its western Massachusetts region. The artistic side of the Berkshires’ culture has been no exception, and recently became a part of the Red Lion Inn itself.
Late last year, the Stockbridge hotel opened a new exhibit hall to host an ongoing art pop-up series. Its latest exhibit, Foreign Substances, debuted in April, in collaboration with the Norman Rockwell Museum, Shakespeare & Company, and the Berkshire International Film Festival. The exhibit features innovative works from actor and artist Billy Zane and British artist Charlotte Rose. Design + Decor had the distinct honor of attending the exhibit’s weekend-long launch and witnessing this exciting new endeavor for the arts.
The intent, according to the hotel, is for guests to “immerse themselves in a world where art meets entertainment and creativity flourishes.” This occurred during the launch, when Design + Decor and many other art-loving guests were treated to exclusive access to view the art, converse with Zane and Rose, attend a screening of Zane’s new film, and visit the Norman Rockwell Museum.
We also had an opportunity to meet with Sarah Eustis, CEO of the Red Lion Inn’s parent company, Main Street Hospitality. Her family has owned the Red Lion Inn for 54 years and has played a critical role in promoting the arts in the Berkshires. “My mother introduced contemporary art into the hotel, which is unexpected in the context of a historic hotel,” she said. “Norman Rockwell is synonymous with the Red Lion Inn and Stockbridge. He came there in the 50s and spent the rest of his life working there. ... I think it’s always been in the bones of the place.”
While the hotel’s storied history plays into its ongoing art series, this specific exhibit plays into the fusion of both the historical and the contemporary. Zane’s featured collection, Something Else, blends together pop culture and abstract work to entice the minds of viewers. In his words, Zane called the series Something Else because “it simply was that— something other than solely abstract expressionism on view. I made figurative impressionist portraiture and mixed media offerings otherwise excluded from previous shows.” When asked why he fused abstract and pop art, Zane simply replied, “No one said I couldn’t.”
Rose’s collection, Shakespeare Cigarette Company, similarly tells a story that mixes the old with the new. Her art series combines Shakespearean tragedy with the shady tactics used by cigarette companies to sell dangerous goods. Explaining her inspiration, Rose said, “I’ve done two previous shows based around branding. I thought it would be quite nice to blend my two passions,
D+D: What is it like being in the mind of Billy Zane? And how does one keep finding inspiration to be creative, allowing yourself to continue to pursue your passion for art?
Billy: I’m not sure I’d be the most reliable source to answer that question, as I’ve been told with a degree of regularity that due to some of the creative and professional choices and challenges, I choose to undertake, that I must be out of my mind.
But in all levity, it is the lifestyle of a celebrated and accomplished artist that holds as much sway over me as their work. The schedule, their pursuit of beauty, penchant for siestas, fine food, long swims and love of French light challenges the schedule of even the most successful of actors, no matter how many zeros in the paycheck.
There are exceptions naturally and I feel blessed to have had a long and illustrious career, however painters figured it out long ago. It’s always been sexy.
D+D: Your recent collection is an ode the the 1960s and 1970s , why are these era’s an inspiration to you?
Charlotte: I find these eras quite interesting as it dictates the moment in time. I am obsessed with the branding of these times, and I think cigarette boxes are the epitome of that era. They are very sexy and were sold in a glamorous way, and I just love it. I collect Playboy magazines and Vogue magazines as well from this time period ad I would see the advertisements in the back of the book, it felt like they kind of anchor a moment in time and especially the American dream.
Charlotte Rosewhich are art and literature. I felt like Shakespeare had a lot of themes of mortality, lust, greed, and tyranny that all fit quite well into the idea of big tobacco. I felt like there was a lot to play with.”
Foreign Substances will remain on display through August at the Red Lion Inn, and we highly recommend experiencing the exhibit if you have the chance. Certainly it will not be the last breathtaking series on display at the Red Lion Inn, however. “Now, what we’re trying to do is amplify art in the area and bring some really serious artists here to cultivate more sophisticated conversations about art,” remarks Eustis. The Berkshires and the art community as a whole will be waiting with anticipation to see what graces the halls of the Red Lion next.

Architect
and Interior
Designer Anastasia Harrison and her acclaimed firm, AHD&Co, recently completed a timelessly elegant home for a young family in Colts Neck Township, which highlights the rich rewards of collaborating with an award-winning professional designer. Thoughtfully planned to the last exquisite detail, this three-year labor of creative imagination produced a show-stopping 10,000-square-foot home in collaboration with architect Robert Waldron of Waldron Architecture and Design.
This New Jersey home features 7 spacious bedrooms, 8 full bathrooms, 2 powder rooms, a 400 square foot pool house, and a finished basement that simply must be seen to be admired. This gem of a basement features a speakeasy-style bar, gaming, and entertainment space, a full gym, and a luxury sauna. Every inch of this brand-new building was meticulously designed and decorated with precision and care, and yet it effortlessly emanates the warmth and noble character of a home that has graced the location for many years.
Through the Eyes of a Designer
Formally trained as a professional architect, interior designer Harrison sees projects to beautify with her talents for interior design, but she also focuses deeply on planning a space to fit the needs of her clients. Her experience includes working for leading New York design firm Gensler, as well as for luxury brands Donna Karen, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, and Prada in Europe with Mark Pinney Associates. Her rich portfolio made Anastasia an easy choice for the family to entrust with their dream home.

The exterior is wonderfully balanced visually with immaculate white paint and the symmetrical windows are framed with classic black shutters, in the Traditional Colonial style that is a favorite of the Northeast. The interior of this spectacular home offers pleasures and surprises around every turn. A step inside welcomes you to a bright and airy foyer and you’re immediately immersed in a feeling of timeless wonder as you take in the captivating character of the house—it feels like this home couldn’t be brand new, it radiates an eternal elegance in the curated details. To the left in the foyer, a delicate pinstripe white-on-navy carpet leads up the stairs, an invitation to tour the bedrooms. While the dining room beckons to the right with its rich, deep hues of stirring moody shades.
Mood for Dining
To the right of the cheerful entryway, the dining room dramatically changes the atmosphere with its mix of lush, rooted color hues of dark wood, black, grey, and soft neutral. A large pentaptych against a neutral wall visually enlarges the dining area, while delicate wall sconces add a luminous shine with their dazzlingly polished brass hardware. Natural shades add to the appeal of the dining room windows, which are dressed in a carefully selected fabric that celebrates the family’s love for the woodlands with detailed flowers, acorns, and pinecones. The extraordinary built-in cabinets in the dining room add additional storage space and ground the dining room with an ageless quality.
The refined sink creates a wet bar for convenient entertaining allowing the family to host the party while serving. The tidy sink and the fine dark wood built-in cabinets feature brass hardware that evokes antique charm.
Secret to Creating Wonder
“It’s a light and airy, traditional home,” Harrison shares with Design + Decor. Though this home was a brand-new build, Anastasia masterfully created an interior that looks both everlasting and enduring. “We played off of light and bright, with different shades of white in the primary rooms. Then we created dusky, moody spaces to counteract all the light and bright. We used Hale Navy paint in the office, Mindful Gray with Olive Green in the dining room, and we complimented the design with a lot of warm wood accents.”
Dream Designer, Dream Home
With such an intensive undertaking to create this perfectly tailored home, Design + Décor queried the homeowners to share their experience working with AHD&Co, “Working with Harrison was pleasant and exciting from beginning to end. Her knowledge of both the fine details, as well as the overall scope of the project, allowed for a smooth experience throughout the entire process. Anastasia had a firm handle on what we hoped to accomplish in our custom home- and she delivered in every aspect.” Indeed, the final interior design results are a work of fine art. Exploring the sophisticated details lends insight to some of the many reasons why this stylish New Jersey home stands out.
Anastasia’s reverence for fine design and unparalleled professional knowledge is often entrusted with some of the most sensitive projects, including delicate historical renovations and restorations. With her experienced hands with historical wonders, she knew exactly how to bring a look of unforgettable timelessness with her intentional selections of hardware throughout the home. The doors to the spacious pantry, for example, were custom treated to add well-loved charm with its smooth brass and weathered wood. Antiques were also mixed with new furnishings to create layered and intriguing spaces.
Touches of Nature
Another personalized detail noticed throughout the home is the clever integration of nature and woodland inspirations, as the homeowners are animal lovers and requested this special touch. The homeowners warmly share thoughts about Anastasia’s choices, “The subtle details and personalized touches have been wonderful for our family. Throughout the home, there are unique accents such as a chandelier with birds welded into the metal frame and numerous hand-painted wall papers with animal prints quietly incorporated into the patterns without it being stark or tacky.”
Sophisticated Kitchen Elegance
When collaborating with a leading interior designer who is also a
sionally trained architect, every area of the home serves an intentional purpose to be functional and beautiful beyond expectation. The kitchen highlights Harrison’s capacity for bringing together her color and design proficiency, with awe-inspiring, highly practical results. The fresh and airy kitchen is a luxurious mix of materials that reinforces the enduring sophistication of this home. A striking quartzite island is visually balanced with wood elements, along with delicate lighting fixtures that resemble fine jewelry by Visual Comfort.
Harrison shares, “The kitchen island is a natural walnut. We wanted a natural wood that was exceptionally durable, and walnut just has such an intrinsic character to it. It brings cabinets to life; walnut has its own personality. We picked a blue quartzite for the top, it’s a natural stone in a beautiful light blue pattern, like the ocean.”
Basement Sensation
One of the most well-used spaces of the home is the finished basement, with charms around every thoughtfully planned corner. The basement displays a speak-easy-style bar, complete with a stylish brass foot rail. Elegant pendant lighting that resembles fine jewelry is suspended over the cozy bar, with a combination of hand-rubbed antique brass and glass.

The mix of brick and bold blue colors by the gaming area amp up the fun in this cheerful entertainment zone. A fully equipped gym and spacious sauna lined with expert lighting and light wood round out the multifunctional space.
Labor of Love and Trust
The homeowner trusted Anastasia’s expertise regarding color and theme, with her combination of whites, and woods, and her imaginative use of bold color in special areas. The homeowner continues, “On a larger scale, her ability to select quality materials and color schemes was quite impressive. Every room has its own unique theme and color scheme, yet it all seems purposeful and flows into the overall home. Three years later, we still get excited every time we drive down our street and see our house. The home is so livable, and each room is used often. We have had countless people drive up to our house while we are playing with the kids outside and get out just to tell us “Your home is the talk of the town, and even the county!” and “We just love driving past to admire every detail!”

Enchanting Outdoor Spaces
Creating a sanctuary with a personal statement
Stories by Danielle PorterCAROL KURTH
CAROL KURTH ARCHITECTURE & INTERIORS
Built within an eclectic blend of manicured landscapes, modern design, and organic beauty, the Tango House is designed as a monument not only to environmental consciousness but also to the unique passions of its owners. This property, inspired by the client’s naturalist lifestyle and masterfully envisioned by Carol Kurth Architects, surpasses the expectations of modern living spaces to embody a living, breathing ecosystem of culture, dance, and sustainability.
Previously a pastureland, the five-acre parcel is a testament to ecologically responsible living. From custom glass derived specifically to prevent birds from unexpected harm to the self-sustaining farm and geothermal heating to a geodesic chicken coop, the property and landscaping encourage a oneness with nature where native species and wildlife can thrive.
The pool house, constructed upon the footprint of the former cabana, is designed for the ultimate indoor-outdoor living experience. The two bedrooms feature private terraces with direct access to nature trails that thread throughout the property, while a sheltered outdoor space offers a multi-season social experience like no other. With views of the pool, plenty of natural daylight, and a place for everyone.
An environmental oasis, the pool is a stunning creation with a natural stone backdrop and crystal waters. At one end, a shallow lounge shelf leads to a break in the stone wall, offering passage to the secluded hot tub beyond. Marching down the length of the stonewall is a Europeaninspired water feature, adding a rhythmic beauty to the experience and ultimately leading to a striking glass wall that anchors the end of the pool and offers underwater views of the fireside lounge beyond.
This firepit here is set, just so, on a strategically placed stone, a masterful sculpture, is one of two that beckon the family to gather around when the evenings roll in at Tango House. It is in those moments that the home is transformed into a serene retreat where music fills the air, the perfect
lighting sets the scene, and memories are made.
Culturally, the residence serves as a canvas for artistic expression. The outdoor sculptures, particularly the breathtaking “Toros” by David Harber, reflect the property’s thoughtful design and every moment is an intricate narration of the homeowner’s connection to nature, exemplifying harmony between human interest and natural stewardship. A culmination of the vision of its owners and the creative constructive collaboration of its designers, Tango House is more than a home, it is a vibrant, living environment where every corner has a story, every element a purpose.

On this lustrous piece of land where three distinct properties were combined over time into a singular cohesive family compound in Katonah, New York, ARTEMIS Landscape Architects developed something of an ethereal experience in an unexpected place. Once a simple, long, and winding driveway that traversed across a fence-lined bridge over an unkempt gully is now a transformative moment of connection and integration with the natural environment.
The feature moment here is truly the revitalization of this gully, which exemplifies both function and aesthetic allure while reinforcing the property’s sweeping grandeur and enhancing its practical utility. The landscape architects, led by Tara Vincenta, ensured that every aspect of this design was thoughtfully considered while prioritizing a sense of connection between the spaces.
Aesthetically, the new entry sequence is nothing short of dramatic and idyllic. The driveway is now lined with a procession of Armstrong maple trees and transplanted dogwoods, which grace the bridge and serve as the threshold to the main lot, setting a tone of discovery and anticipation. The vehicular bridge itself was transformed with stone walls, finished with pea stone, and reclaimed granite pavers.
The gully, previously marred by weeds, was reinvented as a dynamic, verdant pedestrian connection between the two parcels of land. It is here that the piece-de-resistance, a series of thoughtfully floating platforms and meticulously crafted steps, guide you through a
ticulously crafted steps, guide you through a multi-tiered paradise. The plantings in this space are strategically planned to keep a park-like feel that harmoniously blends with the natural beauty ensuring the landscape here is as breathtaking as it is functional.
Working diligently to preserve the natural contours of the gully while creating an engaging experience with the environment, the team was not
immune to challenges. Just getting machinery set to meticulously place the boulders and orchestrate the plantings brought the best of their creativity to the table. Integrating these boulders was necessary to stabilize the sloping terrain and create niches for plantings along the edges of the gully.
Beyond their functional purpose, the newly placed boulders were embedded strategically to appear as if they were always a part of the
natural environment. The stairs were intentionally created off-set to create a sense of destination and the platforms were designed and dimensioned based on human movement to ensure an organic passage experience.
Through this project, the gully, once a division, has become a central, unifying element in the landscape, proving that with thoughtful design, even the most challenging spaces can be profoundly transformational. This visionary transformation of a space that many might overlook extends beyond landscaping and narrates a story
of restoration and connection, weaving natural features of the land with human habitation in a seamless tapestry.

MATTESON LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
PHOTOGRAPHS BY: MICHAEL STAVARDIS
The hustle and bustle of an active family life calls for a thoughtful haven to retreat to after a long day. For this family in Westport, Connecticut, that retreat bloomed close to their doorstep – in their very own backyard. The family brought in Jessica Matteson of Matteson Landscape Architecture to design a space that would respect the coastal tidal pond and surrounding Audubon conservation land while providing them a place to relax, entertain, and most importantly –connect.
With the wetlands and pond along the back of the property, the only natural space for a backyard experience was in the front yard, pushing Matteson’s creativity as she developed their two-acre property into a sanctuary of modern design that seamlessly intertwines with the surrounding natural beauty
of the property. The color palette throughout the project is based on cool and calming tones with low-maintenance flowering plants adding pops of color, while sunny areas buzz with pollinator plants.
After surrounding the property with modern cedar fencing for privacy, Matteson anchored a sparkling pool to the right side of the home and provided ample seating space with views in every direction. The pool itself features an impressive sound system as well as a unique waterfall that cascades down a tile wall in front of an elevated seating
area, where the experience is complete with a new indoor-outdoor bar.
Just beyond the pool is a vibrant orange pergola structure, anchored in the yard and starkly contrasting the vibrant green landscape most delightfully. The structure itself is designed for all seasons, and occasions, and features an integral firepit, adjustable shades, and a retractable roof making the space an inviting and practical hangout no matter the season. The views from this space to the pond are even more captivating now that the native plantings, which replaced traditional grass, created a natural buffer zone that attracts a variety of fascinating wildlife.
This space is a testament to the perfect harmony that can exist between modern design and the natural environment as well as the transformative power of creating a space that fosters relaxation, family time, and a profound connection with the beauty that surrounds us.

For almost a decade, Rosalia Sanni Design has worked with the family at this Greenwich, Connecticut home, bringing to life the property through thoughtful design. Throughout their time working together, one area sought formal direction as it found itself often reinvented to support the family’s changing needs – from a grassy sports court to a
rose garden and beyond. Its final evolution and purpose are exactly what this home needed.
As Sanni explained, developing this space was an “…exercise in restraint [to] make improvements in such a way that we don’t overwhelm the land and celebrate the beauty that is already there.” Nes-
tled down a short path from the main home, you can catch a glimpse of it through an artfully preserved historic tree. The land, originally a sloping terrain with rugged areas and a crumbling stone wall was reimagined into an idyllic pool haven.
After the land was leveled, the team reorganized the wall, diligently

pulling it apart and rebuilding it as a nod to history, dry laid the stone as it was originally done. What’s more is that over the prior decade, as stones were pulled from the land during renovations, they were set aside and ultimately used in this stone wall, making it entirely reclaimed and reused from the property it sits on.
Two sets of steps descend into this space where the bluestone pool sits slightly off to one side, with chaise lounges adorning lush fescue grass, chosen for its durability and minimal maintenance requirements. It is in these smallest of details that the complexities of this design are realized, and one can see how they are executed masterfully, leaving behind only an unassuming, elegant experience in their wake.
The design maintains the legacy of natural beauty that this property boasts and evolves it into a new modern era. Elegant hydrangeas anchor either side of the entrance while structured evergreens balance the unkempt forest beyond the stone walls where climbing roses, now in their infancy, will grow to add texture and depth to the space in the years to come.
As the landscape matures, it will continue to fulfill the vision for this property, adapting to the changing seasons and needs of the family. The understated palette and thoughtful preservation and evolution of the land culminate in a space that is both functional and visually compelling—a perfect haven for relaxation and reflection.

LOUIS FUSCO
LOUIS FUSCO LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS
On this picturesque two-and-a-half-acre residential parcel in Connecticut, lives a home, a generous family, and a thriving orchard. The owner’s deep commitment to not just the land but the community is evident, as they are known for allowing neighbors to walk through and enjoy the property as well as for donating the fruit from their orchard harvest to the local food bank, schools, and neighbors or visitors who are strolling through.
When a building lot adjacent to their property became available, they engaged Louis Fusco Landscape Architects to not just expand the orchard but to add a central pavilion to the lot and make improvements on their current property. This was no small feat given that the newly acquired land was teeming with invasive species, hosted wetlands, and offered challenging grading throughout.
Navigating local regulatory challenges, the team secured special use permits to utilize the land as they intended with a central communal pavilion that would become the heart of the orchard. The pavilion, designed by a timber frame company, was pre-constructed offsite and assembled swiftly on the property, ensuring minimal disturbance to the existing landscape.
As the project evolved, the owner expressed a desire for additional features, including a swimming pool, which would integrate with the existing orchard while preserving the natural ambiance. By carefully relocating some
apple trees to the newly acquired lot and using natural stone from the site to blend the pool area with the orchard’s aesthetic, they created an enchanting space.
The orchard itself became more than a collection of fruit-bearing trees. With a diverse selection of apple, peach, and pear trees, the team crafted a lush, wildflower meadow effect that is both ecologically beneficial and visually stunning. Native grasses and vibrant blooms like Black-Eyed Susans and Asters, add color and texture to the landscape, ensuring year-round beauty.
The rain garden, designed to capture and manage stormwater run-
off, protects the wetlands, and promotes groundwater recharge, minimizing the impact of the new work on Mother Nature. The use of native gravel and carefully selected materials for paths and sitting areas not only enhances the site’s aesthetic but also contributes to its ecological functionality.
The result here is a landscape filled with inviting spaces and thoughtful design, serving as a testament to the owners’ dedication to sustainability and their generous spirit, providing a space for both quiet reflection and lively social interaction. This project is a timeless reminder that landscapes when crafted with care and vision, can become more than just spaces—they can become legacies.

In the northern part of Greenwich, Connecticut lies Jardin Vert, a breathtaking property spanning almost six acres of land. The home itself marries historical integrity with a modern sensibility and served as a sanctuary for the owner as they raised their family. Now with grown children and a property that had endured severe storm and deer damage over the years, the owners’ contemplated selling the home but realized the deep connection they felt to the estate and instead planned for a home addition and total landscape renovation.
The design narrative here is harmonious and tailored intricately to reflect the owner’s traditional design preferences. Sitting atop the crest of a hill, the views are simply breathtaking – rolling forests, fields, and farmlands with ridge-line views.
The upland forest archetype and historic aspects of the land were a beloved feature, and the owner sought to maintain these components of the property, rather than integrating standard suburban design solutions. As a part of an open-space network with significant historic, cultural, and ecological value, the owners and the team prioritized the enhancement of the scenic vistas and landscape. This effort included updating the existing pool instead of installing a new one, complete with blue stone slab steps with grass risers and classic coping details.
In alignment with the preservation focus of their efforts, they worked diligently to maintain the discretely enclosed perimeter for deer. Closer
to the home, a different enclosure celebrates the intimacy of the space – boxwood hedges create rooms within the perennial gardens, creating a sense of order and tranquility. Tightly clipped Linden trees elegantly frame the front parking court, planted in the gravel courtyard while large heart leaf Cercis Canadensis and Oak Leaf hydrangeas bring color, texture, and layers of depth to the plantings.
A committed steward of the land, the owners’ invests their time in gardening and caretaking throughout the property, informing the addition of gardens framing the driveway as well as fruiting and ornamental trees integrated on the property. More than functional –these moments add a layer of beauty to the landscape. Donald Wyman crab apple trees mixed with the existing beech trees offer a moment of soft spring color while traditional boxwood plantings create an intriguing threedimensional effect.
Overall, this thoughtful revitalization was achieved through the classic use of verdant plantings, strategic hardscape integration, and sophisticated grading solutions intended to embrace and hold space in the landscape. The result is a landscape that feels not only preserved but enhanced as it invites you to engage deeply with your surroundings and merge with the rich past through the vibrant and living present.

n the hills of Silo Ridge in the Hudson Valley, a masterful landscape renovation has harmoniously created a sense of serene privacy and intimacy amongst the rolling hills of the adjacent golf course. Silo Ridge, where the home is situated, is a master-planned community known for its luxurious amenities and commitment to sustainability.
From the beginning, the landscape team collaborated closely with the architect to properly site the house, ensuring seamless integration between indoor and outdoor areas. The property’s varied elevation was ingeniously utilized to develop distinct terraces, each with a unique purpose and creating a series of garden rooms that each offered a distinct experience.
The upper terrace, focusing on sustainability, offered meticulously organized beds for growing vegetables and herbs. The middle terrace, rich with seasonal perennials, provided visual splendor. The lower terrace, formally designed, included tall stone walls for intimacy, a welcoming pergola space, and a custom-built countertop with an antique sink for washing garden harvests and cut flowers. An essential water project was the creation of a rain garden on
the lower side of the property to manage the stormwater runoff and serve as the home’s sustainable feature. This feature captured stormwater runoff, aiding groundwater recharge and managing water flow before it reached the golf course buffers. Native plants were chosen to comply with Silo Ridge’s guidelines, ensuring ecological harmony and preventing the introduction of invasive species.
The homeowners’ lifestyle, which emphasizes eco-conscious living and gardening, was a key influence in the design. Walled gardens provided not only functional spaces for plants but also privacy and protection from hillside wind, while the terraced layout gave for varied experiences within the landscape, from intimate garden rooms to expansive views over the golf course.
The design achieves a striking balance between a classical layout and a rustic, natural aesthetic curated to enhance the family’s lifestyle. It blends local materials, sustainable practices, and a unique artistic vision that will provide a refuge for relaxation, reflection, and family gatherings for years to come.

All too often properties are cleared of woodlands; whether to make way for a new home, a large renovation, or simply the desire to maximize the potential for lawn. It is a refreshing change of pace when the natural landscape is viewed as an asset; to be selectively edited, enhanced and enjoyed. With careful consideration given as to how to integrate the buildings, and the outdoor living areas within the existing landscape while minimizing the impacts on the existing landscape while still creating functional spaces for your family.
One would be hard pressed to not be relaxed in a woodland landscape; as the sunlight filters through the leaves of tall canopy trees, the light flickers on the tapestry of green leafy textures the fill the woodland floor. The effect of the many shades of green and soft textures is quite calming, and one cannot help but appreciate the cooling effect from the shade trees on a hot summer day.
Tall canopy trees, provide the most delightful setting for a woodland landscape, rather than dense shade that one might find beneath a lone maple or oak, these trees have been growing as companions for decades, they have long since dropped their lower branches and now arc several stories above the ground allowing the sunlight to filter down.
In nature woodlands are punctuated periodically by clear-
ings where trees have fallen, in these gaps woodland meadows; the gaps in the canopy created for a home or drive can be treated in a similar manner. These openings in the canopy can provide some opportunity for conventional lawn where there is sufficient light, and low spreading perennials and ground covers that can be used as substitutes. Whether it’s a thick pillowy covering of moss, the finely textured leaves of Mazus reptans; or low growing wild strawberries these lawn alternatives provide walkable options for the garden.
A healthy woodland has a combination of canopy trees and an understory layer of shrubs, perennials, and ground cover, that provides a habitat for a diverse array of species. In parts of Southern New England, the understory plants have been reduced in number from the pressure of deer browsing there by leaving bare areas in the landscape, which in turn makes the area susceptible to erosion. To recreate a woodland garden the plantings are arranged in drifts, the plants are allowed to grow together to create a dense carpet; consider leaving some of the plants to go to seed in the fall to aid in spreading. If browsing is a concern in your woodland or shade garden consider using ferns and carex grasses as a base layer, along with a few types low growing spreading perennials such as sweet woodruff, epimedium or geraniums. With time you can add in additional plantings to create a true tapestry garden.
Lastly its import to remember that a woodland or shade garden will require edits with time; periodically it may be necessary to thin the overhead canopy or maintain sufficient light in the garden for the plantings to thrive.

A fully renovated pool house becomes the owner’s favorite destination
NATURAL FIT
A perfectly placed pool house creates an ideal hideaway.
Cedar ceilings add a touch of rustic luxury and charm with their rich red hues, natural organic warmth and uniform texture. The ceiling also features hidden LED cove lighting that adds a delicate glow. The crisp white walls increase visual depth and space. Granite slip-resistant tiles are both attractive and functional, ensuring guests walking in with wet feet are safe.
Opposite: Ample storage conceals an LG washer and dryer, with a secret folding station that neatly tucks away seamlessly for easy towel folding. A Blomberg fridge, ice maker and sink support a wet bar for guests to enjoy a cocktail or a cool drink. A sophisticated powder room echoes the relaxing blue tones interspersed throughout the pool house.
Overlooking a bird-watcher’s dream of over 3 acres of native meadow, this beautiful pool house designed by Haiku Durden in a theme that handsomely celebrates the existing New England shingle style home that resides on the property. While maintaining a cohesive elegance that echoes the main home, this pool house evokes a welcoming magical charm all its own.
The clients came across HDS Design Company online and were so impressed that within the day, the homeowners requested Haiku help to renovate their pool house. She began the design process with the objective of ensuring the pool house fits the local architectural vernacular while producing designs that respond to modern needs. “Two walls and the foundation remained of the original structure and the rest, we built it out from there,” Haiku shared.
Sumo lounge chairs feature “Duchess” Dark Knight leather backs, Vanity Fair Canyon velvet seats and inside backs on a “Black Magic” walnut swivel base.
The custom-made “Vessel” cocktail table in darkened walnut and polished bronze interior is by Caste.
Initially, the clients’ requests were simple: basic storage and deter rodents. However, Haiku envisioned greater potential, combining cedar ceilings illuminated by hidden LED cove lighting, white custom cabinetry, and tasteful outdoor fabric choices to create an elegant and functional space. Sliding glass doors offer relaxing views and, when opened, let in the soothing sounds of a waterfall and local birds.
Inside the immaculate getaway, a full-sized sink and Blomberg fridge complete with ice maker summon guests to come inside and enjoy a cool drink. The LG wash tower is accompanied by a clever pull-out surface for convenient towel folding, which seamlessly disappears back into the cabinetry. Haiku personally researched and sought the

Outside, Haiku designed a cedar pergola for the homeowners to dine under and charming handrails inspired by Bunny Mellon’s estate, all with comfort in mind. As a true expert designer, she is also part skilled detective - piecing together a vision for her clients’ needs based on what they say and more importantly, what they don’t
say. “I was trying to customize the space to their needs, anticipating what they would require there. I’m a big believer in function over form. It’s easy to make anything look pretty, but it must be practical. There is ample storage there, including space for all the dishes, cleaning supplies, sunscreen, and towels,” Haiku explains.
The final reveal left the clients pleased beyond expectation, enthusiastically sharing their recommendations of Haiku and HDS Design Company with family and friends. The pool house has since become a daily office space, a refreshing escape to take in nature
and the beauty of the surrounding meadow. Ecological landscape designer Theresa Mucci is credited for the natural landscape that attracts birds and local pollinators, further enhancing the pool house’s organic architecture.
Haiku’s favorite part of this inviting retreat? “I love that people think it’s always been there. It connects seamlessly to the main house and the gardens around it. But more than that, it’s that now the homeowners are using this space daily, and it especially became the husband’s favorite space to go and relax. Who could blame him?
Though the pool house is almost a completely new build, designer Haiku infused a traditional classic historic charm reminiscent of the existing house. “I love that people think it’s always been there. It connects seamlessly to the main house and the gardens around it. But more than that, it’s that now the homeowners are using this space daily, that its became especially the husband’s favorite space to go and relax.”
