Oh Scottsdale...

YOU MAKE US PROUD! The shelter-in-place, stay-at-home orders that Americans have been enduring these last months can take its toll on our mood and disposition. After all, being stuck at home for weeks on end can eventually get to anyone. No one wants to be quarantined, but we all just make the best of it.
We couldn’t agree more. In fact, we’d add to that list with our own reasons why Scottsdale is tops for residents asked to stay at home. 1. WEATHER. Clearly our spectacular spring and early summer climate is second-to-none. Relaxing and taking an outdoor respite in our spacious backyards has been a saving grace for many.
However, if you have to be stuck at home, it seems that Scottsdale residents may have the best experience. Employment search site Zippia.com set out to find the best cities in America to shelter-in-place. You guessed it, Scottsdale, Arizona ranked No. 1 in the entire nation. Zippia.com ranked each city based upon average apartment size, amount of parkland per person, percent of residents with broadband internet, and number of takeout options. From Zippia.com, “Scottsdale is the best city in the U.S. to be quarantined. What makes being stuck at home sweeter in Scottsdale than other places? First of all, those homes are pretty big. The average Scottsdale apartment is 964 square feet. That’s almost double the size of what they’re coping with in Honolulu. Throw in over a thousand restaurants with delivery and lots of public land, and it’s easy to see that things could be a lot worse than Scottsdale.”
2. SWIMMING POOLS. Not every Scottsdale home has a pool, but the Valley has more pools per capita than most other cities in the nation. Has anyone else felt like they’re on an extended “resort stay” right there at home? 3. HIKING TRAILS. How fortunate are we to have hundreds of miles of beautiful McDowell Sonoran Preserve trails to explore right here in the city? 4. THE PEOPLE. When we do need to venture out, say to a grocery store or pharmacy, the friendly and generous folks we encounter are another reminder of the quality of people that live here. Add in the fact that so many of our neighbors have volunteered to help each other out during these times, and it’s clear to us that YOU make Scottsdale the best place to be!

WHAT THEY DO: Founded in 1943, Vitalant is one of the nation’s oldest and largest nonprofit transfusion medicine organizations. With a network of community blood centers, Vitalant facilitates the donation of blood and plasma from healthy individuals, with the mission to save lives. Currently, in addition to hosting blood drives, Vitalant is seeking out patients who have recovered from the COVID-19 virus to donate plasma in an effort to collect virus antibodies as treatment for patients battling the illness.
DID YOU KNOW? • Only 10% of the population eligible to donate blood, does so. • One donation can help up to three different patients. • About 6.8 million volunteers give blood in the U.S., which is nearly 26 percent fewer donors than 10 years ago. The result is nearly 4.2 million fewer donations each year.

CREATING THE
ultimate PET-FRIENDLY HOME
With over 80 million U.S. households living with a dog or cat, it’s clear that we Americans love our pets. We’re buying premium food, vitamins & supplements, training devices, grooming services, toys & beds, socialization opportunities, daycare, veterinary, and pet-sitting services to the tune of $72 billion a year, according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA). With our hearts full and wallets open, it only makes sense that we’d want to incorporate some rooms or amenities in our home just for our fur babies. Here, we highlight some ideas to create a welcoming environment that’s not only dedicated to your pet, but that can also make your life easier as the owner and caregiver.
DEDICATED BATHING STATION Many homeowners love the convenience of a built-in bath and grooming area. Most commonly installed into laundry rooms or mud rooms, these bathing facilities are even sometimes given a room of their own. With a handheld showerhead installed closer to the ground, a large drain to handle pet hair, and an easy access for pets and people, they can also be a good alternative for grooming professionals to make in-home visits.
PET "PARKS" Have some pooches that have plenty of energy to burn? Consider incorporating a play place for them right into your landscaping design. You may want to install maintenance-free artificial turf, multiple levels for climbing, jumping, and running; or even a shallow built-in wading pool to keep your hot dog as cool as a cucumber. For cat owners, an enclosed courtyard or predator-proof cat run can keep your kitty safe while enjoying the great outdoors. BUILT-IN DINING AND POTTY STATIONS Whether it would go in your kitchen, laundry room, or other space; having an area for your pets built right into your cabinetry configurations can keep the area neat and tidy while keeping your home’s aesthetics intact. You can build an area for pet bowls and even install a water faucet right over the water bowl, install deep drawers to store the bulk pet food, or create a private nook for your kitty’s litter box.
