out of the batter and contributing to the dense texture. The batter is then topped with a cream cheese mixture before baking. Just before serving, the cake is sprinkled with sugar and heated with a kitchen blowtorch which caramelizes the sugar and adds to the crispy, gooey consistency. Truly, it’s heaven.

If you’re like us, you enjoy a little dessert decadence every now and then. After all, part of life’s simple little pleasures is the thrill of indulging in a palatepleasing, grin-creating special treat. So, with the spirit of sugary-sweet perfection in mind, we’ve searched the city for some must-have sweet delights. Show Stopper Shake at the Hotel Valley Ho’s ZuZu restaurant – There. Are. Simply. No. Words. Seriously? For one, this incredible combination of milkshake, innovative toppings and housemade desserts piled up high is way too pretty to eat, wouldn’t you say? This photo-worthy dessert is the bomb and bound to blow up your Instagram. So, get your perfect pics posted and then dig in! Each month the creative brains in ZuZu’s kitchens come up with a brand-new shake to feature. Pastry Chef Lisa Graf finds her monthly inspiration from seasonal events or flavors. Past flavors have included Campfire S’mores, Strawberry Shortcake and Blood Orange Creamsicle. October’s flavor is inspired by the

State Fair. “We incorporated fried funnel cake, fried cheesecake, and then fun extras like cotton candy and a chocolate-covered Twinkie to make it feel like you are right in the middle of the State Fair with all the traditional goodies that bring such nostalgia,” she says. Signature Warm Butter Cake at Mastro’s Steakhouse – The cake is rather simple really. It’s a yellow cake sans frosting served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. So, what’s all the fuss about? It’s hard to describe how amazing this cake is. It’s warm, perfectly gooey on the inside yet crispy on the outside. It’s richer and denser than a traditional yellow cake – no doubt due to the considerable quantities of melted butter and egg yolks. The chefs at Mastro’s mix the batter by hand, keeping air

bath with the workout room which could be a fourth bedroom. The front and rear yards feature a large covered patio, charming kiva fireplace, cooking station, pool and spa. Not to be missed!

Custom Ice Cream Sandwich at The Baked Bear – When you combine fromscratch, freshly baked cookies with craft ice cream made with all-natural and high-quality ingredients, you know you’ll have an above-par ice cream sandwich in your hands. Yet this ice creamery takes it to another level. Choose your sandwich ends from a selection of over a dozen cookies, brownies, even doughnuts! Next, customize with your favorite ice cream flavor such as Chocolate Espresso Bean or Birthday Cake. Finally, choose a topping such as Fruity Pebbles, Oreo crumbs or Heath Bar bits to coat the sides of your sandwich. Yum and yum! Oh, and one hot tip (pun intended) – be sure to choose the “warm it up” option!

Development of Crossroads East There is a high-profile section of land along the 101 freeway in Scottsdale that will be the site of future development. Approximately 1,000 acres of undeveloped desert land known as Crossroads East lies east of Hayden Road to Scottsdale Road, just north and south of the 101.

WITH THE POWER

SPOTLIGHT ON:

The area has recently been rezoned to allow nearly 7,000 residential units, industrial development, hotels and office space. In early September, Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company acquired 136 acres of the land for its new regional headquarters and other development. The Nationwide development is expected to employ 5,500 people and would add an annual $500,000 impact to the Scottsdale economy with direct revenues to Scottsdale estimated to be $24 million over 20 years. Along with the 1 million square feet of office space, Nationwide will be developing two hotels, 50,000 to 200,000 feet of retail space and 1,200 to 1,600 residential units. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2019. The tallest buildings in the Nationwide development, expected to be roughly 10 stories high, will front the freeway and then the height of the buildings will get lower as the development spreads north to the Grayhawk subdivision. With the expected increase in traffic, the city will be constructing a Miller Road underpass and an extension of the road to Princess Boulevard. There will also be a widening of Hayden Road to six lanes. The widening is scheduled to be completed by 2020 and the Miller Road extension to be completed by 2021. As residential housing opportunities become available, we’ll keep you posted on the impact those units, and the high-wage employees that will need housing, will have on North Scottsdale real estate.

OF INTERIOR DESIGN

You may not have considered your interior design as a way to improve your mental and physical health, but you’ll be surprised at what a difference it can make. Your home should be a place that your stress is relieved and not a place where it grows. The way you design your home is one of the biggest influencers. Here are a few ways you can change your home design to influence your mood:

new

CHOOSE NEW PAINT COLORS The color of a room can influence your mood in more ways than you think. The psychology of color is something interior designers consider when determining the paint for a room. Color has the power to revitalize, to soothe, to inspire creativity and even to stimulate the appetite. You will instantly feel the energy created by a red dining room, as well as the calm evoked by a blue bedroom. Choosing the right color is crucial to setting the tone and purpose of a room. IMPROVE YOUR LIGHTING Another budget-friendly idea to improve the décor of your room is to change your lighting. Bright, harsh lamps and bulbs can cause feelings of sadness and negativity. Natural light has a very calming and peaceful effect on our moods and emotions whereas a lack of light and even poor artificial lighting can trigger depression. If you have a room that doesn’t allow for much natural light, if any, try using light fixtures with softer light bulbs to help. Or, use mirrors strategically to help reflect the natural light around the room. DECLUTTER & ORGANIZE At the end of the day, the last thing I want to do is come home to a messy home. Often, decluttering can be the difference between a room you love and one you hate. Schedule some time to put away items and get rid of the things you don’t use anymore. COMFORTABLE & STYLISH FURNITURE While you might choose the trendiest furniture for your home, take comfortability into consideration. When buying furniture, both factors are very important. CHOOSE DÉCOR THAT MAKES YOU HAPPY When it comes down to it, you’ll be happiest with décor you love. Although there are plenty of rules to follow, choose accessories, colors and pieces that make you happy. You’ll never boost your mood with décor that you aren’t 100% in love with!

small packages. If you’re a doughnut lover (really, who isn’t?), then you have to hit up the new Dapper Doughnut at Desert Ridge for their mini doughnuts served up hot and just begging to be devoured. These little cake-style gems are light and moist with just a hint of yummy crunch. With 14 proprietary toppings and sugars to choose from – think blueberry lemon glaze or PB&J – your customized taste combinations will have your taste buds in overdrive. TheDapperDoughnut.com
