Welcome! My name is Matthew Lum. I’m currently a Architecture graduate student in the Sam Fox Archiecture M.Arch program at Washington University in St. Louis. Prior, I had received my B.S. in Architecture as well as a minor in Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Further, spending a full academic year abroad in Spain in an architecture program at Vallès School of Architecture (ETSAV-UPC). Architecture became a passion for me at a very young age. I had the great opportunity of being raised in one of the best architectural cities in the world, Chicago. The unique culture and history had a profound effect on me. Each building was unique yet seemed to fit within the famous Chicago skyline. The idea of finding the perfect balance between originality and fitting within the built environment. I further explored this in my studies and travels abroad in Spain and beyond in Europe. I gained a global and international perspective towards architecture. I live by the idea that architecture is not just about the buildings themselves but also the people, culture, history, and environment attributed to them as well. As architects, we have the ability to impact how the world lives through our passion for innovation and our development of arts and creativity.

UPLIFT Prompt The idea was to create a public library for the West Loop of Chicago. The basic requirement was to provide physical/archived books. However, any form of other media could be included.
Approach The initial concept stemmed from looking at transperancy, circulation, and interaction. The transperent outer shell of building creates an interaction and exposure with the outside. The use of split levels to create vertical interaction and views between users. The building itself features an atrium and ring of skylights to let light all the way down to the spaces below. As you ascend from the ramps wrapped around the building, the user is able to see all the way up or down due to the creation of a void between the floor plates and perimeter circulation. The structure itself allows for this free plan and voids within the building. Also, the structure exaggerates the height of the building and allows the use of curtain walls as a free facade. For non-harsh sunglight, the shell facade taken from the perimeter circulation ramp shape serves to diffuse light.

CONNECTIONS
CONNECTIONS NECTI N NECTI TII Prompt The building was to be a music school on the corner of a neighbourhood in Barcelona. It was to serve as a building for both the public and private. There were to be admin space and practice spaces varied in sizes. As well as spaces to perform and larger spaces to accomodate student needs.
Approach The initial approach consisted of looking at the site and its context. The building had to fit the iconic Barcelona Cerda plan by continuing the neighbourhood’s block. But the building would serve as a continuiation of the diagonal and its plaza. Connecting the garden space behind the site with this continuation of the diagonal. The program was then divided up based on this physical seperation. Admin was to be in one building and the school in the other. These would have connections between the two. The “connections” were to be a place to connect and socialize or be a place of contemplation. These spaces were to be highlighted and be a meeting point for the whole building. The choice of having glass transperancy was to highlight these spaces compared to the practice and office rooms that were to be filtered and shaded.

UNSETTLEMENT SETTLEME ETTLEM Prompt The project was to be used as a Research Center for a U.S. National Park. Additionally, we were tasked with dealing with an extreme environment. These environments dealt with water, air quality, invasive species, and unsettled ground. I was tasked with dealing with unsettled ground for my project in my own interpretation.
Approach Upon designing for a research center on unsettled ground, I wanted to delve deeper into the duality of meaning in unsettled/unsettlement beyond the physical. In Olympic National Park lies a rich history of Native Americans that have been buried. Throughout history, they have been suppressed and have a tension with the U.S. Government. I wanted to design this to not only serve as a research center but as something more for the nearby reservation of the Quileute. Their tribe, like most, experienced colonization and a history of death of not only their people but of their culture. Recently, archaeologists discovered artifacts upon the beach in the park. I wanted to draw upon these artifacts and culture connected to the land. Drawing inspiration from the Quileute needles of sea stacks that resemble a dagger and a traditional Native American canoe for my design. These “artifacts of the building are buried beneath shifting beach sands with the roofs piercing through the ground revealing the project. These roofs are also accessible and provide elevated views on the beach. In addition, elevated skylights bring light down into the spaces below. The connection of the ocean and low tides are used to reveal parts of the building. Structure is used and extended out to show the height of the tides throughout the day. Water is used to heat the rocks underneath the floor as steam inspired from ancient heating methods. Also the use of local basalt in constructing the building.

MAXIMIZING CONTEXT FOR EXPOSURE
OPEN PPEN EN BO BBOO BOOK O Prompt The idea for the space was to be used as a Bookstore and Cafe. In addition, the space could be used to allow other programs to be held on the spaces one makes for Bookstore and Cafe.
Approach The concept started from looking at the surrounding site and traffic. I wanted to have as much exposure and transparency as possible within my building. The existing site elevations led to the angles and forms of my building. These ideas led to me using an exposed structure to hold up a butterfly roof. The use of an exposed structure exaggerates the height of the building and guides the viewer to look up towards the roof while expressing the shape and form of the building. Aside from its aesthetic draw, it allows for a free plan. So, I’m able to use curtain walls as a free facade which lends itself to the transperancy of the building. The roof plays off the angles of the sun and features a sky light. It allows the building to use larger windows that take in more sun. Also, the butterfly roof shape allows for a natural water collection system. The materials used consist of mostly glass and steel. But, it features brick as well for an aesthetic connection to the surrounding buildings. The building features an overhang to provide a covered space but also open to the environment. Overall, the building allows for a free plan with transparency and exposure.

SHIFTING G PROMINENCE PPROMI O OM Prompt Developing an interpretive center within the University of Illinois Arboretum. The spaces are to be flexible and to create a new amenity for the unique landscape.
Approach The Arboretum features many different moments or experiences throughout it. My thought was to provide the park with a new type of experience while not detracting from the established experiences in the Arboretum. The idea led to the choice of my site and my overall concept for the building. The large hill in the Arboretum is one of the tallest natural elevations in the Urbana area and should be celebrated in a landscape that is normally flat. The creation of elevation in the Arboretum was an interesting and new experience that could be expanded upon. The creation of different moments of elevation is what drove my concept and how one can experience those moments. My building also celebrates open spaces throughout it by using a free plan due to the structure. The spaces or terraces and roof can be used for multiple purposes such as extra gallery spaces or gathering spaces. The seasonal aspect of winter adds the addition of the space as a place for snow sledding and other winter activities.
