Welcome! My name is Matthew Lum and I’m currently a Junior In Architecture, minoring in Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. Architecture became a passion for me at a very young age. I had the great opporunity of having one of the best architectural cities in the world, Chicago. The unique culture and history had a profound effect on me. Each building was unique yet seemed to fit within the famous Chicago skyline. The idea of finding the perfect balance between originality and fitting within the built enviornment. I live by the idea that architecture is not just about the buildings themselves but also the people, culture, history, and environment attributed to them as well. As architects, we have the ability to impact how the world lives through our passion for innovation and our development of arts and creativity.

“Architecture is bound to situation. And I feel like the site is a metaphysical link, a poetic link, to what a building can be. -Steven Holl
OPEN BOOK Prompt The idea for the space was to be used as a Bookstore and Cafe. In addition, the space could be used to allow other programs to be held on the spaces one makes for Bookstore and Cafe.
Approach The concept started from looking at the surrounding site and traffic. I wanted to have as much exposure and transparency as possible within my building. The existing site elevations led to the angles and forms of my building. These ideas led to me using an exposed structure to hold up a butterfly roof. The use of an exposed structure exaggerates the height of the building and guides the viewer to look up towards the roof while expressing the shape and form of the building. Aside from its aesthetic draw, it allows for a free plan. So, I’m able to use curtain walls as a free facade which lends itself to the transperancy of the building. The roof plays off the angles of the sun and features a sky light. It allows the building to use larger windows that take in more sun. Also, the butterfly roof shape allows for a natural water collection system. The materials used consist of mostly glass and steel. But, it features brick as well for an aesthetic connection to the surrounding buildings. The building features an overhang to provide a covered space but also open to the environment. Overall, the building allows for a free plan with transparency and exposure.

SHIFTING PROMINENCE Prompt Developing an interpretive center within the University of Illinois Arboretum. The spaces are to be felxible and to create a new amenity for the unique landscape.
Approach The Arboretum features many different moments or experiences throughout it. My thought was to provide the park with a new type of experience while not detracting from the established experiences in the Arboretum. The idea led to the choice of my site and my overall concept for the building. The large hill in the Arboretum is one of the tallest natural elevations in the Urbana area and should be celebrated in a landscape that is normally flat. The creation of elevation in the Arboretum was an interesting and new experience that could be expanded upon. The creation of different moments of elevation is what drove my concept and how one can experience those moments. My building also celebrates open spaces throughout it by using a free plan due to the strucuture. The spaces or terraces and roof can be used for multiple purposes such as extra gallery spaces, gathering spaces, or small gardens. Overall, the building is about providing new and refreshing experiences to the established Arboretum and connecting the park as a whole.

BRACED BUTTERFLY Prompt The proposal for the space was to be used as a Farmer’s Market for the weekends and for the Summer. Furthermore, the space is to be used to allow other programs to be held on the off days of the Farmer’s Market.
Approach The concept stemmed from angles and slopes directly related to the sun. Also, I wanted the building to have an exposed structure. Both these ideas led to me using exposed bracing and a butterfly roof. The exposed structure exaggerates the height of the building. It also expresses the shape and form of the building. Apart from its aesthetic appeal, it provides a free plan. Therefore, I’m able to use curtain walls as a free facade. The butterfly roof plays off the angles of the sun. It allows the building to use larger windows that take in more sun. Furthermore, it allows for a water collection system and the possible use of solar panels on the roof. The butterfly roofing combined with exposed bracing allows for a high-wind and storm resistance. The materials used in the building express different uses of space. As you enter from the front, it moves from lightness to heaviness. The building features and overhang to provide a covered space but also open. It flows into an enclosed space covered in glass to still give an open and transparent space. Both of these spaces are public spaces. The back of the house is private spaces and use concrete for a heaviness feeling. Overall, the building allows for a free plan with transparency.

CARVED ILLUMINANCE Prompt The proposal for the space was to be used as a visiting artisit’s retreat for the a historical park typically during the summer. The focus of the artistic retreat is to create a place for reflection and focus that takesadvantage of the park’s natural and cultural features.
Approach The initial concept stemmed from the history and culturre of Allerton Park. The park features many different experiences throughout it that I wanted to capture. My thought of having an artist retreat for sculptors. The idea of a building being a slab of stone being chiseled to make a form came from the park’s extensive sculpture collection. It’s form is related to the concept of addition and subtraction. The “chiseled and chipped” parts of the form would create windows that would be higher up, reaching the ceiling. The windows play off the angles of the sun to let natural light inside creating interesting experiences of spaces. The building itself is embeddedinto the Earth itself as if it is carving away the land. Furthermore, it allowed me to create a sunken feeling when looking up the hill. The sunken feeling or expereience were inspired from the sunken gardens at Allerton Park. In addition, the shape of an octagon is inspired from similar forms in buildings at Allerton Park such as the one at the Fu Dog Garden. I chose more heavy materials like stone for the exterior to create a sense of heaviness. The building’s materials lend to the idea of the building being able to stand the test of time and permanence like most sculptures.

“Japanese Traditional Architecture is based on these conditions. This is the reason you have a very high degree of connection between the outside and inside in architecture -Tadao Ando
ANDON HOUSE Prompt In a previous excercie, we gave an analysis of lightness vs. heaviness. Students were tasked with making concept models that capture lightness or heaviness and translate it to a 800sf dwelling.
Approach The initial concept of the house stemmed from a traditional Japanese paper lamp called an andon. In the concept model, I really wanted to show the lightness of the design through materiality and frame. The sequence showcases the process from a simple shape to the addition of frame and volume. The frame is kept to highlight the overall lightness of the home. Furthermore, I expanded upon the idea of an andon to a traditional feudal Japanese house. I added a courtyard as well as a rooftop garden based upon a traditional Japanese house courtyard and the use of green space in the homes . It adds to the overall openness and flow of the home.
