Well, for once in my life I’m stuck for words – here we are celebrating our Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year with our own special souvenir edition and certainly not the only ones to be doing so. What can I possibly say about the most famous lady in the world that hasn’t been said already? Most of us will have an opinion about the Royal Family – whether you’re an avid royalist or consider them a ‘logo’ helping our tourist industry or something in between.

Even staunch republicans must surely admire Her Majesty as a person – her stoicism, hard work and certainly as a constant in our lives for so many years. As a child it first occurred to me that we are ‘her subjects’ when Mum and Dad who both worked for the Inland Revenue, explained what HMSO, complete with crown emblem, stood for on their stationery. I was so delighted and felt honoured – I told my pals in the playground ‘my parents work for THE QUEEN’! We were one of many families re-located from London tax offices to Worthing in the early Sixties. Some of you may have been part of that mass exodus and, like me, have special memories. I would love to hear from you and perhaps will write again about that

time and include some of your interesting stories or anecdotes. Apparently a massive dedicated office was built to house The Computer! So, back to Her Majesty – our own take on this Diamond Jubilee, the first since Queen Victoria’s, is to look back on her visits to Sussex over the years. I hope you enjoy this special edition and perhaps keep it as a souvenir of this very unusual occasion. We have rediscovered a recipe you might like to try – the original 1953 version of Coronation Chicken which contains a few surprises. Happy Diamond Jubilee celebrations to you all.

60 years on Wendy Greene takes a look back through The Queen’s reign and forward to the Jubilee celebrations When you are very young, having a new Queen is very special, of course, and seeing the Coronation on television the following year was really something, but the effort put into the occasion by the public will not be forgotten by those old enough to take part. Homes were decked with bunting, window decorations and crests. Street parties were organised and families with televisions suddenly became very popular, as people crowded around tiny sets in the dark. The Queen’s association with Sussex began with childhood holidays in Bognor, and in May 1951, as Princess Elizabeth, she visited Courtlands Hospital in Goring. Seven years later it was Crawley’s turn, with the opening of Gatwick Airport and a visit to The South of England Show at Ardingly (revisited in 2002). In 1962 East Sussex presented a busy schedule including George Street Hove, Hangleton Library, Newhaven Lifeboat Station, Searchlight Home for Children, St. Dunstan’s, Brighton College and Brighton Pavilion. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh stayed with the Norfolks at Arundel. In 1978 Her Majesty visited Horsham and Roussillon Barracks, Chichester, and in 1979, Pelham House, Lewes, Brighton Marina and the Lanes. Roussillon Barracks have received the Queen on several occasions – being home to the Royal Military Police – and in 1981 they were granted the Freedom of the City. Chichester was honoured in 1980 when The Queen handed out Maundy money at the cathedral.

When the Queen visited Durrington High School in 1999, arriving by helicopter at Broadwater Green, the catering students of Northbrook College were asked to provide her luncheon. More recently during a visit to Brighton in 2001 – when she arrived at Shoreham Airport – she conferred city status on Brighton and Hove.

Winner of the Worthing Children’s Jubilee Logo Competition

Arundel starts its celebrations on Saturday 2nd June with a display of groups and clubs at the Town Hall, a free drink, hog roast, music and medals for the children. All Arundel residents are welcome. Arun Choral society and Drip Action Theatre will perform. Sunday brings The Big Lunch – a nationwide scheme of neighbourhood lunches, a street party in Penfolds Place (invitation only – contact Heather de Lara midelara@yahoo.com) and Pastor Steve Lomas of Arundel Baptist Church will lead a Praise in the Park at Swanbourne Lake at 3.30pm. The St Nicholas Fete is on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th rounds off a great weekend with the Matravers Street Party, a charity garden trail in Arundel Gardens and a Community Street Party at Warwick Court and Baptist Church, followed by a service. Littlehampton has a Jubilee Beacon Lighting Event on Monday 4th June scheduled for 9pm. Be part of this national event as Littlehampton lights its seafront beacon in sync with towns and cities all over the UK. The celebration starts with a lantern procession on the

seafront followed by the lighting of the beacon at approximately 10pm by the Town Mayor and a lucky competition winner. Also in the town, there’s a two day event at Mewsbrook Park where you can win a car, learn to make pizza or get close up to birds of prey. You can visit the stalls and sideshows, enter fancy dress competitions or watch the live concert from Buckingham Palace on a giant 25 square metre TV screen while raising funds for Chestnut Tree House. Worthing is planning a massive Party on the Prom on Saturday 16th June with thousands of residents taking part. You can start by booking a £5 pitch for your own friends and family through Worthing Town Hall. Clubs can book multiple pitches. Events begin with the now traditional Children’s Parade and continue through the day with entertainment and competitions such as Best Costume, Best Jubilee Cake and Children’s Poetry. Local businesses will take party with shop window competitions.

Party-goers will need to bring tables, chairs and their own food and drink to the promenade where they will be able to set up between 11 am and 1pm when the party will commence. A special souvenir Worthing Jubilee Programme is being produced and all party goers who order and pay for their pitch before May will have their names recorded in the programme. Southern Water, UK Power and the Worthing Community Chest have provided some generous funding.

Shoreham’s Adur Festival coincides with the Jubilee, so there will be plenty to do, starting with an Abba tribute concert on Friday 1st June followed by a Family Fun Day on Saturday and a tea dance with Herbie Flowers on Sunday afternoon, all on Beach Green. On Bank Holiday Monday there’s a Jubilee Street Party at Shoreham Old Fort, and Tuesday 5th brings The Big Jubilee Picnic from 2-5pm in East Street and on Coronation Green. Local cafes and restaurants will be open or you can bring your family picnic.

Horsham District Council, their sponsors and partners, are hoping the sun shines on their Jubilee Tea Party. The exciting events are being offered on the 4th June, 12noon to 10pm. Activities are planned in at least 3 different areas of Horsham Town Centre, each celebrating a different 20 year era of the Queen’s reign. Participants will be able to relive these times with period vehicles, music, dancing and art plus a fancy dress competition showcasing fashions of the times. Go to the Carfax if the 50s and 60s get you jitter-bugging, air your flares at the Shelley Fountain if the 70s and 80s are where your memories lie and if it’s the nineties and noughties that gets your pulse racing, then see what’s happening at The Forum or for a trip through the Queen’s reign, visit all three areas. As the sun goes down, Horsham will be lighting their Jubilee beacon in the nationwide chain of more than 2000 beacons.

The best camera is undoubtedly the one you have with you and these days that generally means the one on your mobile phone. But if the camera is one of the main functions you want on a new phone there are certain criteria to look out for. Resolution – this is the number of pixels (dots on a display screen from which an image is composed) the camera uses to record an image. The more pixels your camera can record the more detailed and better quality your captured image will be. Look for the best resolution you can afford, combined with a good lens and sensor. Componentry – as with resolution, the better the lens and sensor the better the end results. Look for phones incorporating high-spec components and well-known brands (eg. a Carl Zeiss lens). And keep them well-protected to prevent scratches.

Storing and sharing – if your mobile phone camera is going to be your main camera, make sure you purchase one with as much memory as you can afford. Also look for phones with external memory options, which will allow you to swap memory cards if you need to. And if you want to share your photos you will need an MMSenabled phone. Having your phone double up as a handy-sized digital camera is a very attractive option. And while they can’t yet rival the images captured by a really good camera, you can still get great pictures.

A St John Ambulance volunteer

St John Ambulance believes that everyone who needs first aid should receive it from those around them and no one should die needlessly through a lack of trained first aiders. The charity’s 1000 volunteers are known for providing first aid cover at hundreds of events across Sussex each year – treating injuries and incidents ranging from cuts and bruises to cardiac arrests, strokes and spinal injuries and the first aid they give is often the

difference between a life lost and a life saved. St John Ambulance teaches first aid to members of the public and business employees. In Sussex the charity also has over 700 youth members who meet in local groups to learn first aid and other important life skills such as communication, leadership and teamwork. For information on becoming a volunteer, attending a first aid course or making a donation,

Water – Waste now pay later Remember 1976? Hosepipe bans, water shortage, stand pipes? Well our area is now officially in drought. What can you do? Metering water provides a good incentive to reduce water usage, and most households can make substantial savings. We’ve all heard the tips – shower instead of bath, buy a rain butt or bale out bath water to use in the garden, turn off the tap while brushing your teeth and put a water saver in your cistern – but there are some less obvious ideas. Do you run off a couple of pints of lukewarm water to get a glass of cold? Do you waste half a gallon of cold

to get hot water? Catch that water in a bucket and use it to water plants or flush the loo. Use the water left in your kettle for cooking vegetables. If you do like a shallow bath but hate sitting on a cold patch, don’t waste water waiting for the hot to come through, put the plug in and pour a kettle of boiling water in first. A collection of attractive or unusual containers in a flower bed will collect rain water and provide bird baths at the same time. If we want to keep the water flowing freely – if not free – from our taps, we must all become aware and act now.

The NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) protects children across the UK. They run a wide range of services for both children and adults, including national helplines and local projects. ChildLine, launched in 1986 by Esther Rantzen in response to a plea from children who needed help, has counselled over 2.6 million vulnerable children. Its website, launched by the NSPCC in October 2009, was visited by 951,000 young people looking for help and advice in 2010/11 alone. The NSPCC has identified that, for a number of reasons, looked-after children are particularly vulnerable, and they will be working harder to protect and support them. WADARS (Worthing and District Animal Rescue Service) rescue and rehabilitate domestic animals and wildlife, often being called upon to help injured or trapped animals and birds. They re-home unwanted pets, some not unloved, but with owners unable to keep them for various reasons. At this time of year, young wild animals are orphaned or fall from their nests and have to be reared by hand, by local volunteers or specialist wildlife

hospitals. “Our intention is to return all creatures to the wild in order to live the way nature intended,” says Billy Elliott, Senior Animal Rescue Officer. Sometimes well-meaning individuals intervene too soon when a young creature appears to be abandoned, and the parent may be too frightened to return to feed the youngster. It is possible that a young animal or bird has been intentionally left in a place deemed safe by its parent. Some young birds, owls in particular, could find their way back to the nest from which they have fallen if left to regain their strength. If in doubt, it’s best to contact WADARS and seek advice first. Recently they launched a free microchip service for pet owners over 65, thanks to a grant from The Body Shop. Last year WADARS moved to its new headquarters at The Lodge, Durrington Cemetery from where it co-ordinates a network of loyal helpers and fosterers. Don’t chew over your denture fears Dentures are not something you think about before you need them. So when the time comes – or even if you are caring for someone with a denture problem – you will have questions that need answering. Paul Cullen of The Denture Studio, a qualified and registered member of the General Dental Council, has the answers and is happy to put your mind at rest. Some problems are common to most people. You may be wondering exactly what happens at your first consultation but there’s no need to be nervous. It’s all very relaxed over a soothing cuppa. You can then decide how to proceed. You will be called back to try your new dentures, and if they are not comfortable or you are unhappy for any reason, that’s the time to say so. Paul will check that your bite is correct so that eating is still a pleasant experience. Your dentures will

be ready in about three weeks from start to finish. If you need dentures in a hurry, this can be arranged with a one or two day turn around. Many people hate having impressions taken at the dentist and imagine they will have a bad experience with denture impressions too. Some even fear gagging at the crucial moment. Paul is quick to allay such fears, pointing out that he uses quick setting materials, and his technique means you can sit upright. Don’t be afraid to tell him, though, if this is a worry for you. Finally, Paul will advise you on care and cleaning of your dentures and recommends buying a small nail brush for the task.

A Very Special Place We asked our residents relatives if they would like to share their views of The Shelley. This is one of them, Dominic’s story.

It was early February 2009 and Mum’s falls were becoming more frequent. It was becoming more and more apparent that

Will the Olympic torch pass near you? The Olympic Torch will travel through our area in mid-July. On Monday 16th July it will pass through Portsmouth, Petersfield, Rogate, Midhurst, Easebourne, Tillington, Petworth, Duncton, Chichester, North Bersted, South Bersted, Bognor Regis, Woodgate, Westergate, Arundel, Worthing, Lancing and West Blatchington, with an evening celebration in Brighton & Hove. The following day the route will be Crawley, Copthorne, Felbridge, East Grinstead, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Crowborough, Lewes, Eastbourne, Pevensey Bay, Pevensey, Bexhill-on-Sea and St Leonards-on-Sea, with the evening celebration in Hastings.

Onions were cooked until soft then curry powder, tomato purée and a drop of red wine added. All this was boiled together with a splash of lemon juice and seasoning before cooling and adding to mayonnaise and the apricot purée (made by cooking then sieving dried apricots). For a luxury version, whipped cream was added. The chicken was mixed in to give a pale but tasty version of the filling we know today.
