From the Editor The more adventurous of you may have tried making up the recipe for the original Coronation chicken featured in our last Jubilee Souvenir edition, diligently poaching old fashioned ‘boiling fowl’ with dried apricots. This got me thinking about the phenomena of T.V. celebrity chefs who bring their culinary creations into our homes. We’ve been mesmerised by them since wartime when the likes of Marguerette Patton wrote ’50 ways to cook mackerel’ in women’s knitting patterns, alongside sinister sounding ads for ‘ladies only’ and Carter’s Little Liver Pills. Then Fanny Cradock entertained us with her bizarre cooking shows, in a voice made from honey and steel,
trailing a reluctant husband, watched on tiny monochrome screens surrounded by polished mahogany. These days the chefs’ results would look more at home on a plinth in the Tate Modern than on the dinner table at home. When eating out I am very adventurous, preferring to choose dishes I am unlikely to make myself. I have to smile though, as I sit here eating my beans on a bed of toast on a T.V. tray on my knees watching the latest star chef dart up and down a space age set with a blowtorch, dry ice and a couple of quail eggs. Have a great summer, see you in the autumn.

Widowed/Single The options available to you to protect your home are fewer and it is vital you act now. “I’m protected, I’ve signed my house over to my children”
It’s not too late to put it right – just contact us for advice. The good news is that by arranging your legal affairs in advance, you can plan and protect your home and savings to ensure that you pass as much as possible to your loved ones.

Married Couples If you and your husband/wife currently have ‘Mirror Wills’ or ‘Joint Wills’ you risk leaving your share of your home to your husband/wife for it simply to be swallowed up in care home fees. A legal trust arrangement within your Will could save your family tens of thousands of pounds and ensure your hard earned wealth passes to those you choose.
Have you considered what will happen if your child/ children experience marital difficulties and your home forms part of a divorce settlement? What will happen if your child/ children experience financial difficulties and enter bankruptcy? Did you know that Capital Gains Tax is payable on second homes, meaning a potentially huge tax bill when your home is eventually sold by your children?

It pays to plan in advance, says Glenys Laws at CLS If you have to go into care and you have assets that total more than £23,250 (including the value of your home), you will have to fund your care in full. A care home could cost £500-£800 a week or more. The reality is that your children could end up with very little. Although care might seem only a distant possibility right now, there are important steps you should take now to protect your home.
You can also tweet directly to someone, or mention a person in a tweet, by including the @ symbol – so I’m @clare_lws. Have you noticed TV programmes putting bizarre codes like #BGT on the screen? They’re called “hashtags” and they tell Twitter to group tweets with the same tag so that people can easily look at tweets about that subject.
They’re everywhere. Celebrities send them all the time, news readers read them out… but what are they? “Tweets” – 140 character messages on the social media platform called Twitter. They allow us to talk directly to our favorite celebrities and they helped organize democratic protests in Egypt. They connect millions of people around the world who send and receive Tweets from their “followers” or anyone listening in for key phrases. You can use Twitter to promote a business, retweet gossip or news, chat with friends or folks in other countries or you can watch to see what topics are “trending”. By monitoring popular subjects (trends) you can find out what’s happening in the world from sources independent of the Press. Ready to give it a try? Go to Twitter.com and create your account, type in and the send your message. Now choose whom you’d like to “follow.” You can see anyone’s tweets, but if you follow someone, their tweets are shown directly on your page (known as your “feed”).

Let’s make good friends easier to find Here’s a chance to help your hospital so they can help you
In 1949 Worthing Hospital founded its Registered Charity “The Friends of Worthing Hospital”. With no National Health Service, raising money was vital. Today they’re still working to provide extra equipment and services for patients, staff and visitors of the hospitals, but
in a world of ever improving operations and procedures. The League of Friends is a vital link for all concerned with hospital care, supplying additional support when resources don’t stretch far enough and budgets are left wanting. They also serve the

Sussex Community Trust – The Sussex Partnership which covers Salvington Lodge, Meadowfield, Shepherd House, New Tyne Dementia Resource Centre and Boundary Close. The League has two outlets in Worthing Hospital, run by volunteers alongside the Manager and staff, and aims to foster a link between hospital and community. The well stocked shop and coffee bar in the West Wing is open 6 days a week and the Cafeteria in the main entrance currently opens 5 days a week. A trolley shop provides an excellent afternoon service on the wards. All profits from sales go straight into the charity’s funds and are made available to purchase much needed equipment and facilities for the hospitals. Volunteers are vital to the League’s success and it’s thanks to their loyalty and dedication that so much has been achieved over the past 60 years. Funds come from bequests, legacies, generous donations, fund raising and membership fees,
and each year The Friends’ Trustees agree to provide several hundred thousand pounds of equipment plus one or two major projects. Over the life of the charity, in excess of £12 million has been donated to the local hospitals. At the start of its life The League of Friends was supplying those little extras to make patients’ hospital stay more comfortable, but today they regularly purchase high-tech medical equipment required more and more and in these difficult times. For example, £450,000 towards a second Cardiac Catheter Laboratory, an Optical Coherent tomography 3D Imager costing £48,700.00 for the Opthalmic Department, an operating table for Surgical Division – Theatres costing £34,927, various items for Physiotherapy Department at £23,000 plus furniture and treatment couches for the new wards costing £63,059, totalling £1.4million in the last 3 years alone. Says Ron Noakes, “To celebrate our sixty years, we launched an Appeal to raise £1 million for a second CT Scanner to reduce waiting times and speed up treatment.”
The West wing shop and coffee bar is open 6 days a week The Cafeteria in the main entrance is open 5 days a week The trolley shop provides afternoon service on the wards Profits from the sales within these shops have already helped fund some much needed high-tech equipment We are now raising money for our CT Scanner appeal launched this year to celebrate our 60 years.
How can you help? “Join us and support our work,” says Ron. “Help us to make a difference and make your local hospital special. Membership of The Friends of Worthing Hospitals costs as little as a minimum of £5 per year. In addition you can become a volunteer.”

The Long and Winding Road Wendy Greene takes a look at what makes the A272 special It’s a pleasant way to travel across Sussex, a tonic to lift the spirits after a long winter – or a jolly good pub crawl, as long as one of you stays clear of alcohol, of course. The A272 crosses Sussex from Poundford to Rogate and on to Sutton Scotney in Hampshire. It links Haywards Heath, Billingshurst, Petworth, Midhurst, Petersfield and Winchester and passes through some three dozen villages and towns. It’s a very pretty road, typical of the English countryside and it captured the heart of Dutchman Peter Boogaart who has devoted a whole book to its splendour and history.
Join the road at any point and travel along for as long as you can spare. You’ll find historic sites, unusual churches and great places to stop for a snack or meal. Between Buck Barn crossroads and Midhurst, we passed Knepp Castle, The Wey and Arun Canal and Hollycombe Steam Collection. Then there’s Nore Folly, Petworth’s Antique shops, Tillington Church, numerous individual and interesting shops, at least twenty pubs and a fantastic selection of cafés and restaurants. But the best thing of all is the view across the lush Sussex countryside.

A272 – An Ode to a Road by Peter Boogaart has a unique format. The main body of the text traces the journey from East to West. On the outer edges of each page, we find information about relevant people and places. At the top and bottom, we learn about places to the immediate north and south of the road respectively. The whole is beautifully illustrated with photographs of views, landmarks and follies. Says Wendy Greene, “As soon as Denise, our Editor, showed me the book I knew I had to find a copy for myself. At the time it was out of print, so I spent many an hour scouring second-hand book shops and charity shops but with no luck. Then, on a trip to Arundel, I called in at Kim’s Bookshop and discovered that the book had been re-issued. I can thoroughly recommend it.” Kim’s Bookshop now has branches in Arundel, Chichester and Worthing. Photos: West Sussex County Council Library Service. www.westsussexpast.org.uk

Caring 4 Pets
Do you love cats? Maybe you just love charity shops, so here’s a new one for you prevents unwanted litters, stops cats wandering off to find a mate and makes them less likely to get into a fight. There are just not enough good homes for unwanted cats.
The new place to go for a bargain is 31 South Street, Tarring. Worthing Cat Welfare Trust has opened a new shop to raise funds. The Trust has cared for abandoned, sick and
distressed cats for over 15 years, organising veterinary treatment, neutering, fostering, micro-chipping and re-homing. The Trust is adamant that all cats should be neutered. This
WORTHING CAT WELFARE TRUST
How can you help? The new shop can’t operate without a strong team of willing volunteers to man it, sort and collect goods, so if you can spare even a few hours a week do call them. The next thing that’s needed is stock, so here’s a good opportunity to donate some of the items that you no longer need, or that you’ve acquired but can’t use. It may be just what someone else needs. Most of all the shop needs customers, and that could be you too. You can also donate cat food or money. Gifts, legacies and fund-raising activities are vital in order to maintain the team of experienced and unpaid professional carers who are supported by the Board of Trustees.
Maybe you would prefer to volunteer time to supply the needs of the cats in their care as well as others out in the community. If you would love a cat but worry about the cost, here are two excellent solutions. You might be suitable to become a cat foster parent, taking in the cats that are awaiting re-homing. Perhaps you could adopt a very old cat or one with a health problem, in which case care could continue to be funded by the Trust. Some cats will only live indoors, so flat-dwellers may prefer them. All cats are neutered, inoculated and micro-chipped, and The Trust will continue to support you with advice, including taking the cat back into their care if all else fails.
If you can spare some time for the shop or would like to home one or more of the furry bundles, call 01903 202251. Their website www. worthingcatwelfare.co.uk shows lots more.

“What Fort in Littlehampton?”
That’s what most people say when you ask them: “What do you know about Littlehampton Fort”? This isn’t surprising really when you consider what remains visible of the Fort over on West Beach, Littlehampton. Back in its heyday, the Fort represented a reassuring sight to locals in Littlehampton, knowing its role to protect and keep them, and the security of Great Britain, safe from the French. In the early 1850s, Prime Minister Lord Palmerston, realised that the threat from the French was an increasing possibility. With this in mind, he felt sure that the French would utilise our ports along the south coast, in order to get troops ashore. From there they could march on Portsmouth and attack from the rear. And so began the construction of the Palmerston Forts.
Littlehampton was the very first Fort built by Lord Palmerston in 1854. The work was overseen by Captain Fenwick of the Royal Engineers, and the fort was designed in the shape of a Lunette, a straight sided crescent. The building work was carried out by a London firm utilising local labourers. The fort consisted of a platform for 5 guns, three 68 pounders and two 32 pound cannons, each with a range of 1600 yards (1477 metres). This platform had ramparts surrounded by a 24 foot ditch (8 metres). In the middle of the ditch was a wall called a ‘Carnot Wall’, which was the first to be used in Britain at the time. Within the Carnot Wall were three Bastions. These Bastions, on the eastern, southern and western sides of the fort, provided the troops with a means to fire along the line of the Carnot Wall, and again, were the first to be seen in Britain. It was not too many years later that the French became allies in the Crimean War and the threat was no more. In 1954 the remains of the Barrack block were blown up as it was deemed to be in a dangerous condition. Now, if you go to visit Littlehampton Fort, all that is
seen is the South Eastern Carnot wall and Eastern Bastion, which is in need of vital repair. The whole site has been engulfed in ivy and foliage, which, if left, will slowly but surely pull the remaining structures down. What people don’t know is that underneath all that foliage and sand, is a Fort waiting to be cleared, maintained and cared for. And this is where the Littlehampton Fort Restoration Project comes in. Formed early in 2011, they have three main aims: 1) To clear the Fort and prevent further damage taking place. 2) To maintain and develop the Fort to its full potential. 3) To secure the Fort for future generations to enjoy and learn about our history. The project has a very busy website (www. littlehamptonfort.co.uk) which has seen over 21,000 visitors in the last 10 months, and over 300 people following them on Twitter (Lit_Fort) and Facebook (Littlehampton Fort Restoration Project and Littlehampton Fort). They have the support of Littlehampton Town and English Heritage and have been
granted ‘Scheduled Monument Consent’ for the next five years from the Secretary of State. They are looking to recruit ‘Fort Volunteers’ and also ‘Friends of the Fort’. No specific experience is needed. They have jobs for all abilities. If you are interested in helping, please either email info@ littlehamptonfort.co.uk or call Andy Orpin (Chairman and Project Manager) on 07830 192195. This Fort has played such an important role in our history, it is wrong to let it disappear. Play your part – help SAVE OUR FORT!

area situated in the heart of the woodland and get up close to the animals. Our alpacas, donkeys, pigs, goats, turkeys, guinea pigs, chickens, rabbits, ducks and birds are all very friendly. You can even adopt an animal of your choice for that special gift. In the newly refurbished licensed cafe you’ll find an appetising menu using fresh, local produce. You can feel good enjoying some retail therapy in the fabulous gift shop knowing the money you spend is going to a wonderful cause and supporting the local craftspeople whom produce a range of beautiful products, handmade greeting cards, jewellery, toys, ceramics and carving. By being an enterprising charity, and really engaging
with visitors and supporters, the Aldingbourne Trust help people with learning disabilities to have the same opportunities as everyone else to live independent, full and fruitful lives. Adults with learning disabilities work as key members of sustainable social enterprise teams; helping to create unique products, serving customers and maintaining the fantastic countryside and environment for their visitors to enjoy. Open: Monday – Sunday 10.00 – 16.00 Free parking and Free Entrance. (Small fee to enter animal enclosures on Open Farm)

Health
Dr Sarah’s Casebook
I’m not sure whether it’s the advent of NHS direct-don’t start me off – and other advice services, but it seems that increasingly people need every minor cut, graze, bump and scrape ‘checked out’ by an Emergency Doctor. When I was a kid a dab with a hankie that your mum had just spat on and a mustard poultice, along with a dose of stoicism and common sense did the trick. You would only have gone to hospital in the event of a REAL emergency, and even then you would have borrowed someone’s donkey rather than call an ambulance. Ambulances were reserved for the critically sick or injured, not just for those too drunk to drive or whose family were watching the end of the footie and so clearly couldn’t leave the house. I exaggerate, a bit, of course… The exception is the older generation, who by and large are built of sterner stuff. Ironically, they seem to presume that the obvious angina pains in the chest at 2am are indigestion and to delay presentation with wounds until you can smell them from the waiting room. Older folk are often more prone to falls. A combination
of slower reflexes, poorer sight and hearing, medications and other medical conditions can render people less steady on their feet. This, along with a predisposition to having homes cluttered with lots of bits of occasional furniture, little rugs everywhere and slippers with a flappy bit at the toe make a fall more likely. It also seems that as one gets older and needs to get up more frequently in the night, half asleep, one also becomes more averse to turning on the light, making the plunge down un-gated stairs that much more likely. You get the picture. Prevention is much better than cure. Falls in the elderly can be catastrophic and checking homes regularly for obvious hazards can quite literally save lives. There are a handful of very common presentations in the elderly which do need medical attention. If you have fallen and cannot – as opposed to will not – put weight on the affected part, then you need to be seen. A simple twist injury in the kitchen can break a hip. I have a mental ‘That’s The Spirit’ award for the person who has, usually unwittingly, suffered quite an unpleasant injury and has been getting by with a gargle of TCP and a dab of Germolene. These awards usually go to older people, with the exception of the Turkish restaurant owner who cauterised the end of his own severed finger with a half smoked Gauloise. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!

Older skin is more fragile, particularly on the shins. These injuries can be impressive and need attention. Again, removing the vicious-edged low table can prevent it in the first place. Tetanus vaccinations were not widely introduced until the mid-40s. People, particularly women not in the Forces, born before that, may well be unimmunised. It’s worth checking your status with the GP. Nowadays, immunisations at 2,3,4 months of age, school starting and school leave complete the programme of 5, which is adequate cover for all but the penetrating injury with a plough-share covered in horse manure. Head injuries are very common. Older people on warfarin with a significant head injury, loss of consciousness and/or vomiting may require a CT scan and/or overnight observation. Deep scalp cuts can bleed impressively and may
need sutures. If you’ve glanced the doorframe en passant, have no sinister features and have taken a couple of paracetamol then you probably don’t need to come and get ‘checked out’. Nose bleeds are common across all age groups. In the older population, more fragile vessels and medication can make them more frequent. Pinching the nose over the fleshy bit at the bottom, hard, for ages – around 20 minutes – can settle it down. There’s no point tipping your head back or pinching at the top. But you have to pinch it somewhere, otherwise, bleed and bleed it will. Finally, if you have PAIN, even if you normally don’t like taking tablets or don’t ‘believe’ the hundreds of years of medical research proving their efficiency and safety, please take some. Arnica doesn’t work, paracetamol does. Have a safe and happy summer!
Dr Sarah Honess trained in Medicine at King’s College, London, and moved to Worthing in 2003, where she trained in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care. She now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.
