The Facts Carbon monoxide (CO)is a colourless, odourless, tasteless, poisonous gas produced by incomplete burning of carbon based fuels, including gas, oil, wood and coal. Carbon-based fuels are safe to use, it is only when the fuel does not burn properly that excess CO is produced and is poisonous. When CO enters the body it prevents the blood from bringing oxygen to cells, tissues and organs. You can’t see it but CO can kill quickly without warning. Every year around 11 people die from CO poisoning caused by gas appliances and flues that have not been properly installed, maintained or that are poorly ventilated. The Signs There are signs to look out for which indicate incomplete combustion is occurring and could result in the production of CO. n Yellow or orange rather than blue flames. n Soot or yellow/brown staining around or on appliances. n Pilot lights that frequently blow out n Increased condensation inside windows The Safety Steps Make sure that all your combustion appliances are regularly serviced by a qualified specialist.

Take 5 We catch up with entertainer and festival favourite Movin’ Melvin Brown before he visits the Ritz Studio on April 20.
Your latest show includes the song, dance and comedy of Ray Charles and Sammy Davis Jr. - how have they influenced your style? A lot of people just sing a song but I think Ray Charles lived the song from the inside, giving you the emotions of a song which you could feel deep inside. This has been my ultimate quest as a singer, so putting Ray Charles at the top of my list of truly great singers was a pretty easy move. When someone says after one of my shows ‘when I close my eyes and listen to you I would think Ray Charles was in the room’, it’s the highest compliment for me as a singer. Then because I’m really a song and dance man, the versatility of Sammy Davis Jr. inspired me to be a full entertainer and he was the best example I could have. I aspire to do it all - singing, dancing, tap-dancing, comedy, characters, mime - the full range of entertainment! You’ve performed with great artists such as Harry Connick Junior, Willie Nelson, and James Brown, what do you think makes a memorable performance? I think a memorable performance for me is when I connect with the audience totally, then I feel it fulfils me and them, its like I have invited them to my party and they have yielded themselves totally to what I am doing, it is truly spiritual for me. I think of it like having a thought which someone understands before anything is said - if we connect in that way, I have achieved success. You dedicated a vocal version of Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream to President Obama, how has the president inspired you? There’s a joke that when a job gets so bad that nobody wants it, they give it to a black guy! I grew up with a lot of racism in the US, so for a black man to become the head of one of the most powerful countries in the world, gives hope to not only black people but also to underprivileged people all over the world because Obama set his eyes on making the world more equal for everyone, a message that says you can stand up and be counted now, because you have power and you can make a difference. How did you decide to create your Change This World homeless project? I was born with a purpose, as we all are, and my message is that life is a great situation and opportunity for us all. Through my entertainment and aiding the homeless, children, elderly and anyone else that I can help to find their space and place in life, I believe the world will change and become a better place, as I change and become a better person. You will only get the love out of the world that you put into it. Is there something in Worthing that you’re particularly looking forward to visiting or seeing? Definitely the people, I will find them and they will find me and I hope we will all leave in a better state. I bring a story of love, joy and happiness with my show and I feel privileged to be able to share it with the people of Worthing - my mission continues. Tickets for Movin’ Melvin Brown’s show Me, Ray Charles and Sammy Davis Jr are available from Worthing Theatres’ box office on 01903 206 206 or online at www. worthingtheatres.co.uk

Our wine expert Richard Ambridge explains why Espana’s famous red is having a resurgence
Rioja Revisited As you read this article you will hopefully have enjoyed the first few days of Spring over the Easter holiday - although at the time of writing my wine column we seem to be enduring an endless, long, cold winter. The Spring lamb suggested last month still applies although one wonders, with all the snow around, how much will still be available. In this context I have been asked several times, since last months article,on the vagueries of Rioja as it is such a renowned accompaniment with lamb. There are over 1200 vineyards covering 64,000 hectares and producing over 280 million litres of wine from this famous region. However much has changed in recent times. There has been a considerable swing in the main grape constituent of Rioja’s especially of the red variety. It is often assumed that Tempranillo is “Mr Rioja” and almost 97% of this grape grown around the world is in Spain. However it is only relatively recently that it has developed such a stronghold in Rioja itself.Back in the early 1970’s,when Rioja was really developing a following in the UK,only 30% of Rioja was Tempranillo;Garnacha ( Grenache ) was king.Even by the mid 1980’s this had only grown to 40% and it is only very recently that this percentage has grown to approaching 80%.The Garnacha has lost its dominance here but has grown in popularity in other regions and even Graciano a rare, low yielding but excellent quality grape is seeing more of a resurgence. This changing pattern with the grapes partly accounts for the saying “this doesn’t taste like it used to” so often heard now when a glass of Rioja is consumed. It is also the ageing process that many producers have altered to meet with consumers increased demands.Legally a Crianza ages for a minimum of one year in cask and one year in bottle before release;a Reserva one year in cask and two years in bottle;the Gran Reserva two years in cask and three years in bottle. However each Bodega lenghtens these periods to suit their house style. Therefore a reserva from the same vintage from different Bodega’s may taste significantly different,so perhaps its best to stick with the company style you enjoy best.......at least the accompanying lamb shouldn’t vary as much!!! Needless to say we have some lovely Rioja’s in stock here at Grapes.......please feel free to drop in and taste our extensive range of fine wines.

Come Fly With Me
ESSENTIAL PROFILE 9
John Clune-Georgiou is a Commercial Pilot for Brighton Scenic, a Sightseeing Flight and Aerial Photography business based at Shoreham Airport How long have you been flying?
I started flying to get my Private Pilots Licence in March 2008. I then did some private flying to build on my experience and then I studied the Air Transport Pilot Licence ground exams which I passed in 2010.After that I undertook the Commercial Flying test and the Multi engine Instrument Rating, which gained me a Commercial Pilots Licence and a Frozen Air transport Pilots Licence. How does your day start with Brighton Scenic? I start by the day by checking the weather forecast and Air Notices. Then I inspect the Aeroplane making sure it has fuel and oil, and is clean and tidy for our customers. I then meet the passengers. What happens during the Flight? Our flights are sightseeing scenic tours. We take groups of two or three people at a time, the flight is operated as a tour. During a pre-flight briefing I instruct the passengers how to use the headsets which is important for communication during the tour. Once we
have taken off and we are clear of the airport I start the tour, pointing out places of interest and giving historical information. Passengers can take photos at all times during the flight and they often feed back interesting facts to me especially if they are locals. Where do you fly? We fly within a 50 nautical mile radius of Shoreham Airport for our Scenic Flights. These are sold as set routes but can be varied, dependant on the customers needs. We go anywhere from the Needles, Isle of Wight to Camber Sands near Hastings. The shortest route is 20mins from takeoff to landing, and the longest route is 1hr and 15mins. We also fly from destinations away from base for photography and filming; having recently flown along Hadrian’s Wall for a BBC documentary. What do you like most about flying for Brighton Scenic? Apart from the actual thrill of flying which is a magical experience; I love meeting new people daily who come from all over the
world. The other interesting part of my job is discovering so much about the area and its history. The South Coast and Sussex have such breathtaking views and I feel very privileged to be able to share these. Have you had any especially memorable moments during your flights? We have had many proposals in flight fortunately everyone has said yes. We have flown several people on their 100th birthday and a few 60th wedding anniversaries. We have also flown a few celebrities, flown over the boats on Cowes week, watched the Brighton Marathon and have seen a few goals scored at the Amex. How do you relax after flying? I enjoy the atmosphere at the Airport so it’s a nice place to arrive back at after a flight, with a friendly atmosphere. The building is really special. When I get home sometimes I go for a run along Worthing Sea front or a walk or maybe go out for a meal at the weekend in one of the local restaurants or bars.

Stump grinding waste is suitable for garden mulch and is nearly always kept by customers for their own use. Even wood is recycled into furniture! Large sections of suitable timber are used by local craftsman Brendan Devitt-Spooner to make bespoke furniture. Perhaps you have a hedge which is rather untidy, or a tree which is past its best, or some of those leylandii? Alternatives can be suggested by the team and as experts they can also recommend replacement trees and shrubs, and plant them for you. The Mr Tree philosophy is excellent service at a good price and doing the best job possible every time.

ESSENTIAL Volunteering 15
Giving something back
Linda Turk from Storrington has been a volunteer at St Barnabas House for the last four years. Here, she tells her how she became involved and what she gets out of being a volunteer for her local hospice What motivated you to volunteer at St Barnabas House? I was introduced to St Barnabas through a current volunteer. When I first came into the hospice, I was struck by how peaceful it was and immediately decided that I wanted to help in some way. At that time, I had been recently bereaved (although not in connection with the hospice), so the people who look after volunteers at the hospice suggested that I wait a little longer. I contacted the hospice after a period of time that I felt was felt appropriate and we discussed the suitability of me volunteering at the hospice. It was nice that they took my bereavement into consideration. Is there a minimum amount of hours you have to commit to each month? During four years of volunteering, I have been a driver taking patients to and from the Day Hospice, volunteered in the coffee shop and I am now volunteering on reception in the In-patient Unit. Across all roles there is usually a minimum of four hours per week. What type of volunteering work do you do? My role requires me to use the computer, entering patient information as necessary,
using the phone to arrange transport for patients and welcoming new patients and their visitors into the hospice. This helps me to keep my computer skills upto-date as well as my brain. I feel I am continuously learning, which is great for me. I need to be adaptable to whatever the day brings and my role is very varied.
To find out more, please contact Voluntary Services on 01903 706315.
What would you say to people thinking of volunteering at St Barnabas? If you have the time to spare and want to give something back to your local community, the hospice is an ideal and inspiring place. Describe in three words what your experience has been as a volunteer? Challenging, rewarding and compassionate. If you have been inspired by Linda and would like to volunteer, the hospice is keen to hear from people who would like to help out with maintaining the gardens, working in laundry and assisting the catering team in the evenings. Whatever your skills, flexibility and a willingness to get involved are the main requirements and the hospice is always delighted to welcome new volunteers.
Yes, I want to volunteer for St Barnabas House
Do you have a few hours to spare to help your local hospice? We are looking for volunteers to join our current team to work at the hospice or in the community.
Volunteers are vital for the day to day running of the hospice and carry out a huge range of tasks from administration and helping out in the wards to gardening and driving. In the community, our Community Companion volunteers help patients to keep their independence by giving them a helping hand in their own environment. Ask us about the wide variety of volunteering roles available – we can find the right role for you!
I’m interested in helping out… what’s the next step? To get your application pack or to find out more, please email; volunteers@stbh.org.uk or call Sophie or Mark on 01903 706314.

16 ESSENTIAL BUSINESS
Business Bites Helen Scott talks door to door selling and government grants
Businesses ‘springing into action’ Isn’t it great to see all the spring flowers emerging? Daffodils on the roadside and crocuses and snowdrops in our parks and gardens. Not even the recent snowfall can hold them back. I have some Hellebores in my garden that wither with the frost, and then bounce back when the sun shines. You could apply this analogy to small businesses and their ability to ride out economic storms. As I write this, I am waiting for the budget announcement. We are a resilient bunch, but any additional support from the government as has been predicted, will naturally be gratefully received!
Door-to-door Selling - Yes or No? I was asked this question by a start-up business a couple of weeks ago, who were considering knocking on householders doors to raise their profile and of course sell their products. Their reasoning for this? They themselves did not mind people knocking on their doors. So, is this a good reason to do it, is this the best way of marketing your product or service? Which houses would you target and in which streets? I have knocked on doors, many years ago, and all I remember was that it was a lot of hard work for not an awful lot of reward. And what about
Essentially Worthing Delivers Success for The Funding Mentor I was delighted to get a piece of long-term mentoring work through my column – Business Bites in Essentially Worthing. the recipient of this call? I did a straw poll with colleagues on this one, and most people said that they really did not like someone coming to their door to try and sell them something, particularly if Coronation Street was about to start! Door-to-door selling has worked for companies like Avon in the past, and certainly are popular now with energy suppliers and the charity fundraisers too. I guess the questions you have to ask are, is this a viable marketing tool for my type of business, are you prepared to do the leg work and more importantly, perhaps, will your knock on the door really be welcome! What do you think? Grant of the Month The Government has announced the launch of its new Creative Employment Programme. The £15 million, National Lottery funded programme is aimed at increasing work and training opportunities for unemployed young people. The programme will provide funding for 6,500 new traineeships, apprenticeships and paid internship opportunities to help young unemployed people aged 16 to 24 enter the arts and cultural workforce. Employment created will be in a wide range of disciplines, from technical to administrative roles, provided they are located in England and fall within the Arts Council England’s footprint of: Music, Dance, Theatre, Literature, Visual Arts, Contemporary Craft, Combined Arts, Carnival, Circus, Galleries, Museums, and Libraries. The programme will provide part wage grants to employers who create new apprenticeship and
internship job opportunities for young unemployed people aged 16-24. Employers will need to make an application for funding in order to access a part wage grant. More information at: http://creative-employment. co.uk/the-creative-employment-programme Mini Bite Will Teville Gate ever happen?

ESSENTIAL CARE 17
Top quality care in a warm friendly environment Inspectors passed the Victoria Royal Beach with flying colours conservatory usually followed by a relaxing afternoon nap. All of this happens every day under the watchful eye of the qualified and experienced team of carers led by the long serving and respected manager Coral. The Victoria Royal Beach care home offers long term, short term and respite care to the elderly in a very warm and relaxed environment. Life can be as busy or as quiet as you wish, with daily entertainment, the choice is yours. As the home only offers accommodation to 20 residents there is a very friendly atmosphere about the place, it is not long before you feel well and truly at home. This has all been recognised in a very recent unannounced CQC inspection where we are proud to say that all the CQC standards were being met with no recommendations necessary. As Spring is around the corner the residents of the Victoria Royal Beach will soon be sitting on their balconies watching the world go by, looking out to sea whilst enjoying afternoon tea and cake. A typical day at Victoria Royal Beach means the residents would have already been entertained in the morning by a professional entertainer, taken an exercise class, joined in with a quiz or ball games. A tasteful lunch is served in the bright and airy

ESSENTIAL HEALTH 19
Our usual Dr Sarah health column has been hijacked this month for a very good cause
Dear Editor, I have hijacked this column with a tenuous Link to medicine and do not intend returning it until my ransom demands are met in full. Yours, Mercenary Pirate. On Sunday 8th September, I shall be attempting to complete an Iron Distance Triathlon in Henley, Surrey in aid of Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice and the Paediatric Emergency Department of Worthing Hospital. Why? That is a question I’m pushing gently to the back of my mind as the enormity of my foolishness and bravado hits home. As anyone who knows me will testify, I’ve prattled on for long enough about attempting this event and it’s time I got on with it or just shut up. Of course, a challenge is only a challenge if you don’t know you can do it. If there’s more than a vague fear that you might fail spectacularly- and in this case now- quite publicly too. The Iron Distance event is essentially a long triathlon; a 3.8km swim, followed by 180km on a bike and finishing off with a 42km marathon. The event must be completed in 16 hours to avoid disqualification. 16 hours. Sweet Jesus. The only sensible part of this is the fundraising. I’m hoping to raise money for a superlatively good cause; sick children. I only realised myself (too late to be saved), what a curse-as well as a blessing- being a parent really is. I don’t know why it hadn’t occurred to me before, or why no-one have ever thought to mention it. But from the moment of delivery on, I knew my life would be defined by the too-terrible-to articulate fear that Something Bad would happen to my little scrap. And that this terror would never cease, no matter how big the scrap got. So I cannot even imagine the journey that parents of sick and injured children have to endure. Can there be anywhere simultaneously more heartwarming and heartbreaking than a children’s hospice?
I’m also raising money for our new children’s Emergency Department at Worthing. This provides a separate, purpose built area to receive and treat children and young people in need of emergency medical care. I hope this has improved the experience of our younger patients and their parents who attend. Two massively worthy causes. I absolutely couldn’t do it without my fundraisers in chief Rachel ‘HP’ Henderson-Payne and Debbie Silburn. Their hard work shames me into action. If you feel you might be able to make a donation you can do so via the www.justgiving. com/DrHoness webpage. If you can offer any other help, the beautiful Rachel can be contacted at rachelhp@msn.com I am hoping to set up a training blog, so that the extent of my pain and suffering can be
conveniently followed from the comfort of your iphone. I can’t promise this will be the last I say on the subject. Thank you, in advance for all help, support and wads of cash.
Dr Sarah
trained in medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.
