Tony Adams reveals a few of his favourite things Can you tell us about a person who has inspired you? Noel Coward. As a child, I went to see him and he spotted me in the audience. He stepped off the podium to ask my name. ‘Anthony Adams, sir, from the Italia Conti stage school,’ I said. To which he responded, ‘I think one day you are going to be a very great and famous actor.’ I noticed in an interview that you enjoy reading. Do you have a favourite book? A favourite book, no, but I do love the work of Rosamunde Pilcher. For me fiction is great when it is evocative, romantic, uplifting and escapist. As a successful actor, you must have had many magical moments. Can you tell us about just one? My very best was playing Grandpa Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the London Palladium. At the end, the wings would unfurl from the car and the whole vehicle would rise up over the audience. We all have things that we couldn’t live without – what’s yours? My mobile phone. I am paranoid about being late or unable to let others know. A phone means security and avoiding making others worry unnecessarily. You live not far from Worthing and know the area well. Tell us about what you love best. Worthing has changed over the years and for the better. It is a mixture of real seaside and a proper town and I love that it has a buzz to it.
Tony Adams (Crossroads) will be appearing in the thriller Dead Ringer at the Connaught Theatre 25 – 29 September

We asked six Essentially Worthing readers what is it they love about living and working in Worthing.
Brogan Kirkby-Bott Deputy Youth Mayor As a young person living in Worthing I believe we are more than lucky to live in such an amazing town. We have so much available to us such as the beach, the Downs, theatres, parks and loads more, and I love that Worthing has something to offer people of all ages.
Robert Wilson The Dome Vintage Tea Room The real assets of Worthing are the sea views, the iconic buildings and the heritage. Worthing is a classic British seaside resort and it is fantastic that historic buildings like the Dome have been restored. We really enjoy seeing visitors to our Vintage Tea Room soaking up the view whilst enjoying a classic cocktail or cream tea.
Ashley Jacobs Jacobs Steele Estate Agents. I’ve lived in Worthing since I was five and I really love the community spirit that the town offers. When I am out and about I generally bump into people that I know and it’s great to catch up with people some of which you first met 50 years ago! Also, as a local business owner, I have to sing the praises of Worthing’s excellent schools, shops, medical facilities, seafront and countryside and I can’t think of anywhere I would prefer to live.
Sue Dare Principal of Northbrook College, Sussex Obviously, what I think is best about Worthing and Adur is our College, particularly our superb new building at Broadwater which looks stunning when lit up at night. However, our proximity to country and sea has to also be one of Worthing and Adur’s greatest assets and one I am privileged to enjoy, be that when walking in the South Downs National Park or taking the time to reflect with a cup of tea at the Sea Lane cafe.
Billy Elliott Senior Animal Rescue Officer, WADARS It’s easy to take for granted where you live and considering which element of Worthing is my personal best I found quite a challenge, as once I started, I found there are so many. For me though, it has to be the abundance of large open spaces which are easily accessible, and even if I only have ten minutes to walk our dogs, that blast of fresh air always makes such a difference and gives me the opportunity to clear my mind and recharge my battery.
Julia Carrette Chief Officer, Worthing Council for Voluntary Service (WCVS) The view of the coast from Highdown Hill feels as if it is linked to Worthing and I can see that hill from the back door of my office just by Steyne Gardens. Spotting deer up there in one of the wooded walks areas felt a bit magical and I always think the miller picked a good resting place. The vibrant voluntary and community sector in Worthing is also inspiring. Worthing may not be high profile but Worthing people do see issues and needs, which when acted on is pretty dynamic and contributes enormously to quality of life.

Come fly with me Welcome aboard our new column. Every month, EW interviews the people behind the scenes that keep Shoreham Airport open for business. We start with the spotlight on Ric Belfield Airport Manager What’s the best thing about working at SA ? It is an enormous privilege to work in such a beautiful place. The Jazz Art Deco Terminal Building, the stunning views across to the South Downs, Lancing College and the River Adur from the restaurant. After a year running the airport, are you now a plane spotter ? I grew up in the North West, plane spotting at Ringway airport and seeing the early Concorde and Harrier jets display at Woodford Aerodrome. It is fantastic a few short years on to live the dream and be involved in an airport with such a rich history. And finally… Proudest moments? Starting the journey towards the vision of creating a long
How many people work at SA? There are currently 26 people in Air Traffic, Ground Operations, Fire and Rescue, Security, Finance, IT and Marketing. In addition to this there are in excess of 500 people who work on the airport in around 50 different businesses. For example we have some of the best flying schools in the country such as Flying Time, Sussex Flying Club, Sky Leisure and the Real Flying Company, plus a strong group of aviation engineering and maintenance businesses . In addition, the British Army’s new Foxhound light protected patrol vehicle is being built at the airport by Ricardo and General Dynamics. What are the biggest challenges managing the airport? It can be summed up by the oft quoted immortal words of Harold MacMillan: “Events, my dear boy events”. However well you plan your day things happen and events will often take over as there is always something different happening, which means life is never dull at Shoreham Airport. The biggest challenge is to create a long term sustainable airport at the same time as balancing the demands of the wide variety of different stakeholders.
term sustainable airport, including bringing together some of the different interest groups. The restaurant, operated by well known local firm Truffles, is about to be refurbished in Jazz Art Deco style as the first step in returning the building to its former glory. Who is your hero ? Reassuring and relaxed Bodyshapers Lancing is tried and tested by Terri from Essentially Worthing It was with some reservations I agreed to try out the equipment at Bodyshapers in Lancing as I had in my mind it was a ‘gym’ environment – how wrong I was! Feeling a little nervous I arrived for my appointment at 1pm in my tracky bottoms and t-shirt. The owner, Angela, was there to greet me and after having a chat and running through a very simple health check all my fears just slipped away and it was time to start my workout. There are 6 machines in total each of them working on a different set of muscles in your body. I started the first one and Angela was very thorough in telling me exactly where I had to sit and where to put my hands and feet. The machine was started up and although it seemed quite easy at first I was encouraged to work with the machine to maximise the effects. The more effort you put in – the better the results. Angela stayed with me throughout my trial encouraging me to work a little harder and was reminding me how to position my elbows, legs, knees, feet, in fact every part of my body. It sounds complicated but believe me it isn’t. And the best thing of all, as Angela said, I didn’t ache in the morning! While I was there a few people came along enquiring whether they were ‘fit’ enough to use Bodyshapers and Angela took her time to listen to the various health issues they had, including fibromyalgia, back aches, trapped nerves and many more. Angela reassured all these people she would adjust the machines accordingly and sure enough all the people signed up for a trial workout. One of the many benefits at Bodyshapers is they can help you out with a healthy eating plan too and monitor your progress – a bit like your own personal trainer at much less cost! My experience there was great and I would recommend anyone to try it – what have you got to lose? Bodyshapers 01903 755700 www.bsos.me
Bodyshapers delivers results and improves confidence Becca has lost 27 inches and 1 stone and 3lbs. Becca joined in Nov 2011. Tracy has lost 23.5 inches and 9lbs she also joined in Nov 2011. Mother and daughter Tracey and Becca are thoroughly enjoying their workout sessions with Bodyshapers of Lancing not only have they seen drastic changes in shape and body tone they have also gained confidence This is what they had to say to Angela Prodger the owner of Bodyshapers Lancing BEFORE
Before we joined Bodyshapers we lacked confidence and didn’t like the way we looked. Our confidence has grown and now we feel so much better. The team at Bodyshapers are so supporting and always making sure we as the customer are getting the best vip service. The difference with Bodyshapers is you are always motivated and encouraged, as part of the package they discuss the right foods to eat, you always get a eating plan which has really helped us to get on the right track. Thank you Bodyshapers for coming to Lancing.

Carats Café Bar is worth its weight in gold Jane Hicks seeks out Southwick’s hidden secret to find out what all the fuss is about
It has been said that Carats is Southwick’s best kept secret – and I could see why when I eventually found it! Set behind the A259 on Southwick Beach, this café is completely hidden from view by an industrial estate and docklands. But, being on the seaward side of the floating harbour and off the beaten track makes it attractively remote and peaceful – and well worth seeking out! Proprietor Chris Kraskewski has owned the café for 11 years during which time he has done much to upgrade and extend the building. The day I chose to visit was not good weather-wise so I was surprised at the number of people who came in for coffee or a meal at lunchtime. Chris told me that most were locals – 70% from Hove and

30% from Southwick – and that the business had largely grown up through word of mouth. He says that with space for 120 cars in the adjoining car park, during the summer months he can expect to receive up to 2½ thousand customers. For the last three years, Carats has held a five-star rating for cleanliness and quality. The café accommodates up to 200 people with seating areas both inside and on the exterior patio areas. And Chris has plans for further extension and improvement of the building. Carats is open every day of the week from 8am-5pm offering an extensive menu. Breakfasts are cooked on the griddle in order to reduce the fat content. Snacks, hot and cold drinks are also available plus home-made ice cream. In addition to the regular main meals, there is a daily specials board offering three or four different lunchtime choices of good, wholesome food. The day I went, there was scampi with salad and chips, chicken curry, lasagne with salad and chips, or gammon, pineapple and egg with salad and chips which I thoroughly enjoyed. All the food is home-made, nicely presented, and served at the table by polite and helpful staff. Beers, wines and spirits are also available. Chris told me that he believes in buying good quality products and has fresh deliveries every day. His meat comes from Smithfields in London and he gets fresh fish from the local fish market, in addition to some locally caught, such as sea bass which is cleaned on the beach in sea water – you can’t get fresher than that! Fish and chips are served on Fridays and there is also a kids’ menu. Carats have recently introduced an evening menu for the summer months of July and August. The restaurant is open from 6pm-11pm on WednesdaySaturday with last orders at 9pm. The menu includes starters at £5.95 such as local trio of scallops with a light lemon risotto
topped with sage leaf, cooked in light butter, goat’s cheese salad or, unusually, platter of pork pie with piccalilli, crostini and salad. Main courses costing between £8.95 and £14.95 range from English favourites like gourmet burgers with salad and chips or charcoaled rib eye steak on vine tomatoes with crispy potato skins to continental dishes such as house tagliatelle or chicken fajitas and tortilla wraps. Desserts at £3.95 are hard to resist and include Carats specials like terrine with brulee figs or fruit surf, a wave of light lemon meringue with a rich Italian Morello cherry in a deep cherry sauce. Sounds wonderful! To get there from Worthing, drive east on the A259 to Hove Lagoon. When you get to the traffic lights, turn right down Basin Road North and at the small roundabout, turn left. Continue along this road (Basin Road South) past the fish market and over a number of ‘sleeping policemen’ for about a mile. Eventually, you will come to a council pay & display car park and see the Carats signboard. The café can also be accessed from the other end on foot via the lock gates at Shoreham Port. Council-run toilets (inc disabled) next door; dog friendly (inside and out); pram/buggy and disabled access; pay & display car park (free after 5pm)

Birdman 2012 Takes Off … How many will “fly” this year from Worthing Pier? The 5th Worthing International Birdman Competition will be held from Worthing Pier over the weekend of 18th and 19th August 2012. The International Birdman event is a non-powered flying competition for birdmen and women attempting to defy gravity and “fly” from a platform constructed to the southern end of Worthing Pier. The platform is west facing and is made out of scaffolding; the width of the platform is approximately 12 ft (3.7m). The platform stands approximately 35 ft (10.67m) above sea level so it’s quite an experience for our contestants. The Birdman event first took to the skies in 1971 from the lifeboat pier in Selsey. In 1978 the organisers were told that they could no longer use this pier and so the event moved along the coast to Bognor Regis where it grew in popularity until 2007. When Bognor Pier was shortened, safety concerns were raised over the depth of water and in 2008 the event moved again; this time to sunny Worthing. There are 3 classes for entrants to choose from but their wingspan must not exceed 30ft. Leonardo Da Vinci - serious competitors who design and build their own craft. Condor - serious competitors who use modified hang gliders. Kingfishers - fun competitors; the comic entries who raise money for charity. The Leonardo and Condor competitors will fly on both Saturday 18th August and Sunday 19th August but Kingfishers, the fun class, will only compete on the Sunday. Flying commences at 12.15pm each day but there is also a supplementary programme of entertainment to delight spectators. On Saturday 18th August Vocademy and the Worthing Silver Band will perform on the stage located near to the Beach Office; at 1.50pm Toy Story will be the free movie on the beach. On Sunday 19th August the world champion Jet Ski team will be joining us again to thrill the crowds with their skills; and the Littlehampton Steel Band and Local Group Namaqua will be performing on the stage. This year, our friends at Bartie’s Boutique will be holding a quality craft market from Splash Point to the Pavilion Theatre in conjunction with the event. The best viewing area is on the beach between the Denton Lounge and the Lido. However, if you wish to avoid the crowds then Saturday usually attracts fewer spectators. On Sunday, if you want to experience the courageous and zany antics of the fun flyers, head to the west of the Lido where speakers will convey all of the commentary. Worthing Birdman 2012 is all systems go for take-off. Make sure you have the date in your diary…

Sunshine and Smiles at The Shelley
There’s nothing so tranquil, or so uplifting, as a beautiful English garden in summer. And after those chilly weeks earlier in the year, (remember those?) residents at The Shelley, Worthing’s luxury care home, are looking forward to enjoying a healthy dose of fresh air and sunshine. The Shelley’s large, secluded garden is the perfect place to while away an hour or so – and many of the residents’ rooms open directly on to a sunny patio, with their own private planting area, comfortable garden furniture and a parasol that’s just right for enjoying the morning newspaper and a fresh brewed coffee. Many other rooms have a garden view, so there’s always something interesting to see, whatever the time of year. Owner, Marlene Sanders comments “Whether they’re tending the garden, planting out their own plants or simply feeding all the visiting birds and squirrels, our residents can find plenty to do, if they want to. But if their idea of having fun in the garden is simply sitting back and enjoying the beauty of our surroundings, they can do that, too. Our water feature is a lovely tranquil spot, and looks particularly good when the outdoor lights come on in the evenings. There’s something about the gentle sound of bubbling water that really soothes the mind and makes everyone feel better.” What better place to enjoy Pimm’s O’clock on a sunny afternoon? Activities, trips and outings are organised throughout the year and residents hold regular meetings on the
entertainment programme to decide where they want to go or what they want to do. Whether we’re planning, working or relaxing, it’s great to get out there in the garden and now summer’s well and truly here, it sounds as though everyone at The Shelley will be busy doing all three.

Essentially Worthing was delighted to attend the launch of The Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce’s new Tourism and Hospitality Group, led by Sheryl Tipton. Working with Visit Worthing and the Worthing Town Centre Initiative the aim is to further raise the profile of the towns as tourist destinations and bring more visitors to our area, through improved collaboration between the many local businesses, networking organisations, magazines and newspapers, hospitality and attraction providers. Our town’s heritage was high on the list of priorities, as was our excellent location of split coast and countryside. The forum also highlighted the need to further promote to both the younger and family markets and add continued support to the growing number of town events, such as the recent Kitesurfing and Food and Drink festivals. Other topics such as Sports Events, Buying Local, Shopping facilities, Theatre links, Greener Tourism, the South Downs National Park and nightlife/cafe culture were all discussed and again will be points for further review. Worthing and Adur do have a lot to offer and Essentially Worthing are happy to be involved in enhancing every opportunity we have to showcase ourselves and promote our areas. If you want to get involved in promoting Worthing please visit these websites for information. www.visitworthing.co.uk www.worthingtowncentre.co.uk www.worthingandadur.co.uk www.essentiallyworthing.co.uk
Saturday 14 July saw 28 kitesurfers take on the wind and waves in Worthing, battling it out in The Big Air Open Kitesurfing Classic which was held for the first time in the town. The Big Air Open, based on a ‘how high can you jump format’, was organised by Worthing based kitesurfer Lewis Crathern and Breathe Unity, and supported by Worthing Borough Council. In the men’s ladder local brothers Dan and Ollie Sweeney (RRD/Hadlow) impressed and stormed through to the quarter finals as did other local Kev Maguire (Best Kiteboarding / 5X British Tour Senior Champion). Experienced British Tour Pro rider Martyn Hogg (Flexifoil) also made it through and was joined by an array of local and not so local kitesurfers who fought there way up the scoreboard ladder. The female riders coped with the changing conditions very well changing down kites as the wind strengthened. By lunchtime the Worthing Effect had fully established itself at the event site. Spectators were basking in the sunshine whilst riders took on the 22mph South Westerly winds. The ladies side of the ladder was extremely exciting and did conclude with a full set of results. The running order for the men was halted nearing the quarter final stage after 17 heats. A large back front had tracked through which became a concern for the riders and effectively ended heats for the day. The event was however hailed a success by everyone involved, and the day concluded with the ladies’ podium and prizes for ‘Mens Best Wipe Out Avoidance’ and ‘Most Stylish’ awarded. As there was no official one winner of The Big Air Open the prize money, sponsored by Kingsley Eco Solutions, was put behind the bar by a unanimous decision supported by the sponsor at the celebratory after party. Ladies’ Results 1st Place: Natasha Stipp / Andrina Kelly (Best Kiteboarding) 2nd Place: Henrietta Durbin 3rd Place: Karolina Kurek Other Results Mens Best Wipe Out Avoidance: James Inkpen (Best) Most Stylish: Martyn Hogg (Flexifoil) The organisers expressed a huge thank to the judges Ali Barrett, Luke Dennis and Jim Gaunt as well as to all the marshals, volunteers and everyone who showed support for the event. The main sponsors of The Big Air Open 2012 were Worthing Borough Council, Kingsley Eco Solutions, Breathe Unity and Windmachine with Kiteworld, The Kite Show, Splash FM, Essentially Worthing and Brighton Active being the media partners.

So the latest Splash FM Garden Party has just passed by. Months of planning involving dozens of local companies and organisations has ended for another year. But how did the Splash FM Garden Party, Worthing’s biggest annual live music event come into being? It all started in the summer of 2002 when five groups were competing to secure the local radio licence for Worthing. Here at Splash FM we thought it would be a great publicity stunt for our forthcoming application to stage a free concert for Worthing in the wonderful setting of Steyne Gardens. For the very first show we made a stage made out of two articulated lorry trailers and a borrowed lighting rig. We put on a show featuring Liverpool 70s band ‘The Real Thing’. We had no idea how many people would show up. We need not have worried! Clearly the people of Worthing enjoyed the fledgling concert and it’s become an annual fixture for ten years now. Of course the concert has grown from strength to strength, particularly since it evolved into The Garden Party (in 2009) though

the economics meant a small charge had to be made. This was outweighed by vastly improved facilities; security, a bar, catering, video screens, state of the art sound and light, huge stage and of course lots of toilets! Choosing the right acts is key to a good turn out (along with the weather!) and a team of four of us toil over the decision for some weeks and always involves a lot of research and watching the acts’ performances elsewhere. However, this year we saved ourselves the agony of that decision and had a public vote with Navi (Michael Jackson) and Los Palmas 6 (Madness) topping the public vote. Thankfully we were able to book them and the attendance was absolutely amazing! No doubt it helped that following weeks of torrential rain, the weather finally turned for the better in the nick of time! So what’s the plans for the 2013 Splash FM Garden Party? It’s too early to reveal too much just yet, but let me PAULA POOLE:

Dr Sarah has the last word

We love watching sport but Dr Sarah questions whether we love getting active ? Wasn’t it great to see the Torch in our town? I left work bang on time and legged it up the road to meet up with my family and got there with seconds to spare. Of course it was only a giant flaming ginger snap but somehow it was also strangely moving. Nice so many people turned out to cheer on the Torch Bearers and to get behind this event hosted on home ground. But then the British do love a sporting event. There’s nothing like a big tournament or match to spur us on, straight down to the supermarket to get the beers in and park up on the sofa. We like sport. Watching it, that is. A saunter along the seafront on any sunny day will reveal that, as a nation, we’re no athletes. Shot putting apart, look at any of the Olympians if you are still in any doubt about the benefits of diet and exercise. Nowhere to rest your pint on any of them. Of course, these are people who ‘do’ sport for a job, and don’t have to find time to exercise in between work, childcare and all that sport to watch on TV. I was assessing a young-ish man the other day with suspected angina pain. I asked him how often he was active enough, either in work or leisure to raise a sweat or get breathless. The question drew a blank, as he mentally ran through his day: driving to work, sitting at desk, few bevvies on way home, tv dinner, bed. I had to CT scan another lady with a potentially worrying story and abdominal pain because she was too big for me to examine clinically and garner any useful information. Our children prefer virtual sports to actually getting outdoors and playing with friends. I’ve become the sort of Victorian parent I despised as a child, encouraging my recalcitrant youngsters out in all weathers with nothing but a stick and a whippet to play with. Wii? DS? No chance. They would all have Childline on speed dial, if only they had mobile phones. Strange, they can’t seem to get through on the two tin cans and bit of string I suggested. The point is, with all this sport going on around us, what are WE actually DOING ourselves to keep active? I think the distinction between sport and activity is important. Many people have a perfectly legitimate and well founded fear of lycra and feel

intimidated by the whole gym thing, or cliquey sports clubs .It can be expensive and timeconsuming too. But there are low-cost, lycra-free opportunities every day to burn a few extra calories and tone a flaccid muscle or two. Could you cycle or walk to work? Could you take the stairs instead of the lift? Could you go for a quick walk or run at lunchtime or after work? I have a skipping rope which I bought for under £5, and ok, I can only use it under cover of darkness for fear of alarming the neighbours, but it’s absolutely GUARANTEED to get you sweaty in about 30 seconds, with no special gear, no fancy club and without leaving home. If you say you don’t have the time, what you actually mean is you don’t have the inclination. It seems such an awful drag to get out there and get all sweaty when a chilled bottle of chardonnay beckons. Yet the benefits of getting fitter do have a knock-on effect on the rest of our lives. Paradoxically, using more energy seems to generate more energy. Regular
exercise can do wonders for mood and positive thinking too. There’s nothing quite like the smug after-glow from a little hobble round the block. If ex-soldiers with one or more limbs blasted off in active service can make it up Everest, then that should erase all our excuses for not getting more active. It’s about wanting to. It’s about self-respect. It would be wonderful if part of the Olympic legacy left behind after the Games is over could be that more of us take an interest in activity and sport for fun. It’s not just for the elite, for athletes. We’ve all got bodies like that underneath the layers of pork pies and crisps. Go for a walk and find your inner Olympian!
