Five We go backstage to get a glimpse of the new star of Worthing Theatres, General Manager, Amanda O’Reilly. Over the years, you must have collected some very amusing stories. Once, we had George Melly performing and I showed him to the stage entrance. His band played and introduced him. Applause – but no George. While the band continued, we looked everywhere (including the car park) before discovering him, asleep, backstage between two sets of black drapes. Roused after a few minutes, he stepped into the lights and shone! (As this is a family magazine, we won’t go into details about Amanda’s remit to defend the Australian Chippendales from overzealous fans...) Tell us a little about what makes this job special. The part I find most enjoyable is programming. In Worthing, I can offer very different shows in the various venues; moving fledging acts forwards from intimate settings into the larger theatres. I hope to make a positive cultural difference to the town and I love the challenge of development. Running four venues is an exhausting job. What do you do to unwind? It depends on the season. During winter, I like nothing better than to relax with a good crime novel by Tess Gerritson or James Patterson. In summer, I lose myself in my exotic walled garden where last year I even managed to grow bananas! Worthing offers a huge range of entertainments; if you had to choose one, which would it be and why? I can’t think of a better antidote to winter blues than a great evening of standup comedy. As a keen gardener, how I can I miss Monty Don? But my secret passion is contemporary dance. What is it about Worthing that particularly appeals to you? Worthing has a place in my heart and is filled with happy memories. As a child, I grew up in Buckinghamshire and my family would head for the coast at Lancing once a month to enjoy the sea. So Worthing is bursting with lovely recollections – including having my first Knickerbocker Glory at Macari’s!

Richard Ambridge recommends we sip Rose in February and imagine the Summer nights to come

In the Pink for Valentine’s I am writing this months article with the snow falling outside and listening to the news of appalling weather grinding the country to a halt - we all have another reason for cheering ourselves up !!! February is a special time of year to give our loved ones a boost, so whilst enthusing over some ‘fizzies’ I thought a special mention of the ‘Pinker’ varieties would be topical and fun. There are several on the market with many Champagne houses leading the way. They vary in quality and generally a tad more expensive than the standard non vintage styles. There are two main ways of producing Rose Champagne. The first, and best, is to leave the juice of the black grapes - Pinot Noir and/ or Pinot Meunier - on the skins for longer than usual, though not so long as to produce red wine. The amount of pressure at pressing can also be important. This method is known as the Saignee process and is becoming harder to find because it is difficult to control the colour of the juice extracted and even to be sure of the eventual quality of the wine produced. The second process of adding red juice to the white wine is now the vogue. I think it is very well worth mentioning ‘ one of our own’ in this context. The Bolney Wine Estate near Handcross deserves an extra special mention as this year Sam and her team were named UK producer of the year at the recent International Wine & Spirit Competition. This is the ‘Oscars’ for the world wine trade and is a tremendous achievement for this comparatively small wine producer.Sam has won various awards including Gold medals for her Blanc de Blanc and also equivalents for her Cuvee Rose. The current vintage is 2009 it is 100% Pinot Noir aged for a minimum of 18 months on its less.It has a lovely strawberry aroma with a slight yeasty undertone - a really lovely wine, perfect for any special occasion notably the forthcoming Valentines Day. A cheeky mention for us at Grapes - we sell most of the Bolney range and have the Cuvee Rose currently at £26.95 per bottle. If pink fizz is not your ideal wine choice there are numerous still Rose’s on the market from all four corners of the world. The wines from California helped resurrect our interest in this style of wine and it is very noticeable that we now have a plethora of wine makers from around the globe that are producing Rose wines to accomodate this burgeoning demand. Other than the aforementioned Pinot Noir, there are numerous styles, either blended or individually, from the Shiraz,Grenache,Cin sault,Cabernet Sauvignon or others,to enjoy - there has also been a resurgence of old favourites such as Provence Rose or even the dear old Mateus...I can envisage another outbreak of Mateus table lamps available again soon... Whatever you are doing on Valentine’s Day try to enjoy a glass or two of Pink fizz - toast your other half and think ahead to many more when Summer arrives! Triple celebrations at GuildCare Worthing Olympic medallist joined the party Guild Care staff, volunteers, customers and guests recently celebrated the charity’s official re-opening of the centre in North Street, Worthing; a new brand identity and the start of the organisations 80th anniversary year. Guest speakers included Guild Care’s Patron and Olympic medallist Tina Cook who enthralled everyone with her account of the Olympics; local historian and author Chris Hare and Stuart Warren, Creative Director of Warren Creative. The recently extended centre, renamed the Guild Care Centre, benefits from an extended lounge area for activities, extra disabled toilets and new office space. The extension was funded by the Thomas Banting Memorial Trust with a grant of £100,000; The Florence Cohen Charitable Trust donated £20,000; the Big Lottery Fund’s donation of £10,000 and West Sussex County Council’s Community Initiative Fund’s £5,000 helped provide the sliding walls and doors essential for creating a flexible area to meet customers’ needs. Suzanne Millard, CEO said ‘We rely heavily on the support of our local community to help deliver our services and we have named two rooms in honour of our main benefactors. We are incredibly grateful to all our funders for their generosity.’ Communications Manager, Julia Johnson said ‘In 2012 we recognised the need to refresh our brand and commissioned Worthing agency Warren Creative. We worked with Stuart and his team to develop what we feel is a fresh, distinctive and recognisable new identity of which we are all very proud.’ 2013 is Guild Care’s 80th Anniversary year and the charity welcomed local author Chris Hare who gave an entertaining presentation on the charity’s early years.

There are approximately 130,000 people going into care each year throughout the UK. With 53,000 of those self-funding, remarkably just 10 per cent sought financial advice and guidance. It is vital that those who find themselves in the position of funding for either their own care or that of a family member has carefully considered which option is best for them; because they do have choices. There are six ways to pay for care: The deferred payment scheme; renting out your property; equity release; using cash; investments; and buying a lifetime income. However, we are shocked at the number of people we come across who remain oblivious to these options. Sadly there are many people who still believe they can simply reply on the state to fund their care requirements and this lack of understanding can leave elderly people financially vulnerable. At CareSure we will guide the client through the decisionmaking process making sure the reminder of their lives is comforted with peace of mind, knowing that their residential care setting is somewhere where they want to live. John Kelly is a Partner at CareSure, a leading firm of care fees advisers in the South East and part of the Square One Financial Planning LLP Group based across Sussex.

Let us entertain you Sociable networking group will launch at The Loft in Shoreham Essentially Worthing is pleased to be supporting the latest ‘Sociable Networking’ group from the Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce. Let Us Entertain You is a new initiative developed by the Chamber to highlight the venues and attractions available for business users in the area. “Tourism and Hospitality are vital in our region”, says Sheryl Tipton, Executive Member and Group Lead, “and this group has worked hard to develop a range of events to really promote all the venues and attractions that make our area so appealing – particularly those not so well known. In the current economic climate we all need to keep our business local and support one another, so this initiative really aims to do just that”. The first event will be on Thursday 28th February at The Loft in Shoreham’s High Street. Networking will start at 5.30pm following by a cinema evening at 7.30pm. To register to attend and find out more about this FREE business networking event please contact Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce on www.worthingandadurchamber.co.uk. Attendees are welcome from all local businesses.

Tee Time For Mayor of Worthing’s Charity Golf Day Play golf and raise money for local organisations The Mayor of Worthing is challenging golfers to help him raise vital funds in support of local community groups at a charity golf day on Friday April 19th, 2013. Cllr Charles James teed up at Worthing Golf Club in full ceremonial dress to launch the event , which will boost his charity appeal for The Worthing and Adur Fund. The campaign is backed by Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce which is encouraging local businesses to support the day with a team, plus donations of prizes or sponsorship. The mayoral golf day, for teams of four, includes an 18 hole team stableford competition on Worthing Golf Club’s par 71 Lower Course. There is tea or coffee plus a bacon roll on arrival and a twocourse meal after the game. The cost is £50 per person (£35 for Worthing Golf Club members). The Worthing and Adur Fund has been set up in partnership with Sussex Community Foundation and the Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce to encourage and support local giving. As it grows, the fund is able to make grants to a wide range of local community groups and charities every year. Since it was first established in 2009, local donors have helped to build a permanent fund of £40,000. Said Cllr James: “As Mayor of Worthing, I see at first hand the

good work that is done across the town by hundreds of dedicated volunteers and community organisations. We can all help these groups through The Worthing and Adur Fund the bigger it grows, the more it can give to such groups for generations to come.” Groups who have already received grants from the fund include Worthing Creative Dance, The West Durrington Phoenix Youth Group, Worthing D and D Basketball and Worthing Kids and Dapper Snapper. Business Bites

Helen Scott talks business models, wintery weather and good news!

What does your business look like? That was quick - where did January go? Last time we met it was all about resolutions, business health checks and de-cluttering. Well, this month, I want to talk about business models. Your business may be new or been trading for some time, either way it will have been created as a sole trader, a partnership or a limited company. The brave question to ask would be, is this the right model for your business today and going forward into the rest of 2013. By this I mean, have your clients increased, are you now selling different products, does your customer look different... I am sure there are many more questions that you could ask specific to your business? Your business model needs to be fit for purpose and reflect the needs of your business as it is currently and for the plans you have for it for 2013. For an accessible guide to business models, log onto: http://www. entrepreneur.com/article/38822 If you want to know more, do get in touch. Next month I will be talking about charities and social enterprises. Winter weather - how does this affect your business? There is much hilarity from my friends in Europe when we have snowfall in the UK and our lack of ability, in their eyes,

to manage it. Our news coverage is swamped with it, schools close and businesses experience challenges with staffing levels. The trouble for us, I explain, is that we don’t always get snow every year. So, this begs the question, do you have contingency plans for your business in anticipation of bad weather and how do you address them? You may consider enabling employees to work from home (and indeed yourself), have reduced opening hours, share office space, set expectations with customers. The key issue is enabling your business to continue to run successfully. Good news stories Despite what the media would have us believe, there are good news stories out there for businesses and this is no less true than in Worthing. The Aquarena is looking fantastic, the Beach Hotel is steaming ahead and the new art deco development by Marine Gardens is really coming along. I can’t wait to have a nose around their show flat later this year! Networks continue to do well and play a vital role in supporting business growth. For example, Mumpreneurs Networking Club are looking for new Managers to run groups http://www.

Mentoring also continues to be a great source of support and inspiration to new and existing businesses and I am constantly amazed and humbled by the enthusiasm and commitment that people have to their businesses and to their innovative ideas. So, winter properly arrived then! Our big day of disruption (so far!) came on the 18th January, with a big blanket of the white stuff hitting us at breakfast time. This is the time we go into overdrive, as we aim to keep you up to date with the travel situation – and, of course, the all important school closures. This is where local radio stations like Splash come into their own. When the bad weather hits, we are able to give you the information on the roads and schools that are local to YOU! The information you need doesn’t get lost in a list of schools 200-long, some of them fifty miles away! We can give you the information nominate here you need quickly, frequently and we don’t need to resort to just nominator details telling you to look at our website (even though the information was there too!) I hope you emerged from the snow unscathed, and (fingers crossed) that’ll be it for this winter! I personally hate the snow because, when it hits, it invariably means a 4.45am alarm for me to come into work and deal with the closures as they come in! So 2013 is well and truly under way, and nominations are open now for this year’s Splash Awards. Our fifth annual ceremony takes place at the Dome Cinema on Thursday

Woods Travel The Best Service for Miles Proving that mighty oaks from little acorns grow.

Woods Travel is a successful local business employing over 45 people, but it started with just Roger Elsmere and Bill Wood, a tiny quality taxi service and the ambition to be the best. Following Bill’s death, Roger expanded the business to include Woods Holidays (1992) and The Sussex Cruise Club (2008). From just five destinations in the UK in 1982, they now offer trips to resorts ranging from the Isles of Scilly to Austrian and beyond. Roger Elsmere believes he has the right formula to make his company your first choice. Why? ‘People are becoming more demanding about what

they want from their holidays, requiring a quality package which still represents excellent value for money. ‘We have also found that our door-to-door service by taxi to the coach pick up point has proved to be popular for many people across Sussex and Hampshire, especially for the older members of our community.’ This family business is run by Roger (MD), daughters Tina and Kristy (directors) and Alison Waterfield-Jones who was made a director in 2011 following years of invaluable service. They have come far so that you can go further.

Dr Sarah has the last word

Don’t say it with flowers, say it with...INSURANCE

If you are young, free, single and carefree STOP READING NOW. Take your lithe and youthful self and run, laughing and barefoot along the beach with your hair in the wind. Before you do however, put this article in a dusty drawer with recipes for chutney and the supportive hosiery you will surely need in years to come. If, like me you are careworn and crippled by debt, muddle through from one month to the next attempting to avoid insolvency and domestic squalor, read on, this is for you… Imagine for a moment that you are unable to work through illness or disability. How would you pay for the life you lead? You may muddle through, but your kids have shoes on their feet, you don’t live in a doorway and dinner doesn’t come out of the bins behind Iceland. It’s hard enough to make ends meet with a salary, imagine without... We all agree that insurance is about as sexy as herpes, but unlike herpes, it is essential once you tire of running barefoot and start growing up. Especially when there are little people dependent on you. Until you have stared this scenario full in the face - and I have- which is why I’m sharing my enlightenment with you, you will not truly appreciate the value of what I am saying. But of course by then it’ll be too late. You’ll need something you don’t have. Take it from me. You need it. NOW. Caravans can get very cramped. If you don’t have one already, make a Will. Assign a Guardian for your children in the event of the unthinkable.

Insure your life. This will leave lump sum to your dependents and save them from living in a tent. Get Critical Illness cover. So you’re not dead but have a nasty disease. Do you really want to be cutting out coupons when you’re having chemo? ONE IN THREE PEOPLE WILL DEVELOP CANCER. Turn the stats around. You buy a lottery ticket thinking you might win when the odds are roughly 1:14,000,000. If the odds were 1:3 even I would hold up the queue in the petrol station and buy a ticket. It’s insane not to protect yourself from something that’s really very likely to happen at some stage in your life. Get Income Protection. You’re ill, off work, still have bills to pay and sadly haven’t won the lottery. It’s a monthly salary replacement for the

time you can’t work. It’s peace of mind that you can still look after those you love. So, do yourself a favour. Use your lottery money to fund your premiums. Don’t ask whether you can afford it, but whether you can afford not to. I do not have any shares in insurance companies and have nothing to gain from giving this advice. I have simply experienced the benefit and know how different things could have been. Phone your broker today. Dr Sarah trained in medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.

All you need is Love… Well, so sang the Beatles but we all know that we probably need other things apart from love to exist in this world. However, this is a time of year when we tend to focus on LOVE with a lot of media attention on Valentines Day it’s sometimes easy to forget that love isn’t just about Husband & Wife, boyfriend & girlfriend, loving partnerships etc. there are other aspects of love. So on that basis, it seems to me that it’s a great time to identify the love in your life that can come in so many shapes and forms. Perhaps you absolutely love where you live, your house is your sanctuary? You get great joy from being able to walk by the sea? You’ve grown up in this town and love living here? Maybe you have wonderful family and friends whom you love dearly and who make you feel loved and special? Perhaps you have gorgeous kids who you although drive you mad at times, you love with all your heart? Your love can even take the shape of a fabulous car or a dream motorbike that perhaps to others seems very ordinary things but they are special to you? What or whom do you love?

It’s very easy to lose sight of the things we love in life, those moments of joy especially at this time of year when money is particularly tight, we’re recovering from the over indulgence of Christmas and holidays seem a long way off but taking time out to remind yourself of what you do actually have, what brings you joy, the things and people you love can only help us through those grey days and perhaps give us a little perspective when we need it?
