Denise Smith and Lynn Parker, who founded dating website The Hoof and Paw Connection, tell us how they’re helping fellow animal lovers find romance There are over seven million dog owners in the UK and an estimated 500,000 amateur horse-owners riding out each week. We realised that there was a distinct need for a dating service targeted towards dedicated horse and dog lovers, as there was nothing to help link this special group of people together. We both have a particular interest in dog agility, and there are already lots of people within this community who have asked us about the website and are waiting for it to go live. You don’t have to be looking for marriage. You may want to meet someone to walk with, ride with, enjoy new company and expand your lifestyle choices. The Hoof and Paw Connection is not just a dating site; it’s also about friendship and shared interests. People may not be seeking a live-in partner or marriage, but want to expand their network of friends. Owning dogs and horses and competing in agility is a lifestyle choice and not everybody’s cup of tea. We have a love of our animals and what better way to start a romance than by finding someone with the same interest? Neither of us has any experience in the dating field, but we understand this community of people very well. And because we want to provide a service to a very specific target market, our site and systems are entirely our own. You can’t browse for free as this doesn’t offer any form of privacy for those already using the site. Membership costs £39.50 for three months and we’re offering free membership the first three months for the first 50 applicants. We’re not just starting this business for the money, we absolutely believe in what we’re doing, and want to keep it true to its purpose. www.thehoofandpaw connection.co.uk Denise Smith (left) and Lynn Parker

Worthing is booming

Despite the doom and gloom headlines, Worthing seems to be undergoing something of an economic revival. We talk to three plucky new business owners in the town who are optimistic of success against the odds

Doodley dogs Matt and Leon Henderson-Rood are the owners of the Shoreham branch of Doodley Dogs, a modern dog crèche which opened in November last year. Why did you decide to take on this business? I used to take my dog to the Storrington branch of Doodley Dogs, and ended up getting friendly with the owners there, Amy and Jane Hatcher, who actually started the whole business. They told me that this franchise was available and we thought it was a brilliant opportunity. We both have a passion for dogs. In particular I love learning about pack behaviours; it’s fascinating. Has it been successful so far? We have over 100 clients on our day care books and 25 hydrotherapy clients already. We appeared on Choccywoccydoodah’s reality TV series which goes out in March, and we’ve been on Living Social on Groupon, which

has been great. We’re also joined with Coastway Vets – they refer their pre and post-op dogs to us to help them build muscle growth. And being in Shoreham means we’re ideally placed to tap into the Brighton market. Why would someone leave their dog with you? We use a pack environment in the centre instead of kennels or cages. This is great for their mental stimulation, for play, for interaction with other dogs and for puppies to learn behaviours from older dogs. They just have a ball, and when they get home they are so exhausted that all they want to do is sit on the sofa and have cuddles. Who are your clients? For us at the moment it’s mainly working people. But in the Storrington branch they have a big celebrity client list including Katie Price. www.doodleydogs.co.uk

High Street Today Luke Brace is the owner of local discount website High Street Today, which opened in November last year and runs special offers for High Street retailers What were you doing before this? After I left college I couldn’t find a job. I was offered a few apprenticeships but I turned them down as I have always wanted to run my own business. I haven’t looked back since. Why did you decide to start this particular business? We’re always hearing on the news that shops are closing down. When people shop out of town or online, local businesses suffer. So our whole emphasis is on promoting the High Street. Although our business is online, our discount codes are to be used in shops so we’re using the internet to help drive traffic back into the town centre. What makes yours different from other online discount sites? We target small towns rather than big cities, which are already well served by websites such as Groupon. Our aim is to keep it local and we truly believe in promoting High Street businesses. Alex at his new guitar shop We Have Sound

We Have Sound Alex Cockburn is the owner of guitar and music shop We Have Sound at 9 The Arcade, Worthing. It will open at the end of this month. Tell me about your business We sell base, acoustic and electric guitars, ukuleles and banjos. I’ve been playing the guitar for 12 years so this business is perfect for me. What were you doing before this? I used to work at Guitar Junction but this closed unexpectedly in November last year. I enjoyed working there and it was really upsetting when it shut. So I thought the best thing to do would be to open my own shop. I set about finding suitable premises and found this one near the pier. It’s arranged over two floors and it’s a very nice looking building. How is it different from other music shops? It feels more homely than a traditional shop. We’ve got comfortable sofas and a coffee machine and it’s warmly lit and inviting. Most guitar shops don’t play music so they can be quite awkward places to be in. I want to make this a nicer environment. Are you worried about opening a business in a recession? In the context of a recession this doesn’t seem like a good idea, but Worthing and the south east in general are amongst the wealthiest areas in the UK. Also, without Guitar Junction Worthing doesn’t actually have a guitar shop, so it seems logical to try and fill this gap in the market. www.wehavesoundguitars.com

How do you ensure that you get enough traffic to your site? We link with The Best of Worthing, but by far our most effective form of communication and marketing are social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. We ran a Facebook campaign recently and the response was immense. How has the recession affected your business? Sometimes it can be difficult in the current climate to persuade businesses to come on board, but good value and special offers certainly appeals to consumers at the moment, so there is a clear demand for what we do. We’ve just moved into new premises in Newhaven and are thinking about expanding into Brighton as soon as we can. www.highstreettoday.com Henry Summers (left) and Luke Brace of www.highstreettoday.com

ESSENTIALLY FOR KIDS! Love sbirds, B,iwre d love

At EW is so we’ve devoted th s month’s Kids’ Page to our feathered friends.

Hah! Hah!

Feed the Birds

The winter months are difficult for birds. The ground is hard and there is little food about in the form of berries and fruit. So, why don’t you give then a hand by making this super simple bird cake? You will need: A handful of nuts, raisins and seeds (Bird seed and nut mixes are available at pet shops or use your own unsalted ones) Grated cheddar cheese (about 50g) Lard (about 100g) A yogurt pot, margarine tub or old plastic cup String A mixing bowl Scissors

Where do birds share their news? On Twitter, of course! What pie is black and white? A magpie Why did the chicken cross the road? To see the zebra crossing Knock! Knock! Who’s there? Twit Twit Twho? Which bird is like the third letter of the alphabet? A seagull

To make: 1. Take your plastic container and pierce a hole in the top with a pen. Thread the string through the hole and tie a knot on the inside. 2. Leave the lard out the fridge until it is at room temperature. Cut it into small pieces and pop into your mixing bowl. 3. Add all the other ingredients. (If you have allergies, ask someone else to help here.) 4. Squeeze them all together until they are well combined. 5. Use your mix to fill the container and press in firmly. 6. Pop in the fridge for an hour or so until it is solid. 7. Hang on a tree or fence in the garden and wait for your visitors to arrive.

Gone phishing… again Claire Love the Managing Director of LWS Creative talks about the ups and downs of social media Last time I wrote about so-called “phishing” scams after many Twitter users received a message “Bad blog going around about you”. I thought it worth revisiting the subject because “phishing” is becoming a huge problem in a wide variety of forms. I’m sure we’ve all received emails purporting to be from banks, trying to trick you into filling in a form with all your precious details: logins, passwords or (worse) credit card numbers. Phishing is no longer just confined to emails and Twitter - telephone scams are becoming common. Hands up who has received a phone call claiming to be from your “IT support

company”? Apparently, they have detected a problem with your PC and “if sir (or madam) would just login to this site and download this programme, etc”. Sound familiar? Even users of LinkedIn, the professional social network, have been subject to ‘419 scams’ – advanced fee fraud that involves requests for bank account details in exchange for which the kind soul who helps will get a share

Can you tell your Shiraz from your Chardonnay? Essentially Worthing talks to a man who can. Neil Libby, founder of Vin-ed, has a passion for wines. And it’s a passion he wants to share. His working life has been dedicated to the pleasing of people’s palates. Initially, he worked as a sommelier (a wine expert who serves and advises on wines) in top hotels in the UK, Paris and Geneva. He is also a master of mixology, having concocted cocktails for celebrities in the illustrious Bar Anglais, Hotel Plaza Athenee, Paris. For the past twenty-three years, he has devoted his talents to teaching; working as a full-time college lecturer and course leader in hospitality and catering. The Shelley revisited Stepping into The Shelley you realise you have arrived somewhere special, says owner Marlene Sanders You’ll find a stylish home, providing spacious rooms, elegant spaces and landscaped gardens. A community where neighbours become friends, where stories are exchanged over a latte or cappuccino, activities or excursions are a hot topic of conversation, where you can join the morning crossword club or just relax with peace of mind that support is there when ever you need it. Our chefs deliver culinary creations, traditional favourites or exciting new recipes to tempt your palate. Comparing the tangibles such as room size, living space or costs can be straightforward, but it is the intangibles which prove more difficult. Is the home aesthetically pleasing, how would your furniture and personal possessions look? How do you feel about the other residents and attitudes of the staff ? We believe we have been a market leader in Worthing and while others can promote their facilities and replicate our comfortable and elegant surroundings we believe no one can match our ethos, outlook and culture where residents can be actively involved in every decision made in the home, or our lifestyle programme that nurtures both body and spirit The Shelley is known for innovation, training and supporting our staff. This in turn translates directly into the commitment, the motivation and level of service each member of our team brings to the job. As residents health needs change, the team works to provide a personalised plan of support, care and customised services.

Based on individual preferences, our dedicated activities team organises a broad array of activities programmes and events that nurture the whole person. They include entertainers, lectures, cultural outings, book and special interest clubs, internet surfing, Wii fitness and lots more. Our goal is to promote personal growth and well being. You may be surprised to

find The Shelley is comparable in cost to most residential homes in the area and offers excellent value for money. Read our inspection report on the CQC website where we not only received an excellent rating but also the highest mark achievable in every category. For more information, call The Shelley on 01903 237000.

The choice is yours When it comes to care its vital to get the right information, says Clive Neil-Smith

If you’re looking for care or care services for a loved one, it’s easy to find yourself feeling confused. Not enough information, conflicting advice, or coming to a dead end over all kinds of issues can leave you uncertain about which way to turn. You could find yourself asking: “What care services do I need and where can I access them?” “What are my options?” “Who funds care? And what exactly is available?” Government policy states that local authorities are responsible for providing or arranging for care and care services for older people in their own homes. Local authorities will even pay via schemes or funding streams, called Direct Payments, with individual budgets to enable people to buy in and pay for their own care needs. You do have a choice – of care homes, sheltered housing, extra care housing, warden assisted accommodation, as well as accessing care at home. However, some of these payments or grants may not be used to pay towards long term care fees in care homes! Always ask for – and take advice from your family solicitor, as some options may be more suitable than others. It’s important to think about

Music is the food of love for Pete McIntosh Win tickets to The Brit Awards with Splash fm February can mean many things to many people. I guess top of the list would be Valentine’s Day, whilst those football fans lucky enough to still have their team involved may be getting excited about the fifth round of the FA Cup (that’s something I won’t be doing this year). For me though, as a huge music fan, February always means The Brit Awards. It’s a chance to celebrate all that’s great about British Music, and music from overseas that has struck a chord with the UK public. This year’s ceremony promises to be one of the most eclectic yet with nominees from across the musical spectrum including Coldplay, Jessie J, Foo Fighters and Jay Z. Fighting the corner for the old-guard is 53 year-old Kate Bush who is up for the British Female Award a small matter of 26 years after her first nomination. There will almost certainly be one or two surprises on the night. Who can forget Laura Marling picking up the gong for British Female twelve months ago? Pretty much everybody is the answer – poor Laura is definitely a pub quiz question waiting to happen. If the name doesn’t ring any bells, make sure you catch this year’s show as she’s been nominated again. For those who remember that shambolic night back in the 80s when Mick Fleetwood and Samantha Fox showed how not to do it, you’ll be pleased to note that hosting duties this year are in the (relatively) safe hands of James Corden. Once again, we at Splash are giving you the chance to rub shoulders with the stars by winning tickets for the show at London’s O2, which takes place on February 21st. Not only will you get a great seat, we’ll get you there and back in a stylish limo too – keep listening for more details.

essential health E

Dr Sarah has the last word

W 19

So little space and so much to rant about this month Two issues in the news have piqued me recently. First, the furore over breast implants. It’s unfortunate it was breast implants. I suspect many people will hold certain opinions of this ‘type’ of surgery and the ‘type’ of person having it. Substitute ‘breast implant’ then for ‘prosthetic limbs for orphans maimed by land mines’ and think again. What a monumental scandal we would have on our hands. There would be a public outcry. And rightly so. Patients, the victims, have trusted healthcare providers to look after them at their most vulnerable and to provide the highest standard of care. Not make a fast buck at their expense and then shirk responsiblity. I was insensed that the Government seems about to step in and foot the bill. When I say the Government, of course I mean the Taxpayer. Me and you. Firstly, a consensus needs to be reached on the actual risk these products present to patient health. If it is deemed they need removal, it should be the providers who took the cheques who are responsible and have a duty of care. If the providers bought the products from the manufacturers in good faith, then the manufacturers are responsible. Someone has got rich passing off industrial grade products as suitable for use in human prosthetics. That someone now needs to be exposed and pay up. And so on to our great leader and his latest gaffe. ‘Patients Not Paperwork’, a stroke of genius. Who could disagree with that? Nurses too busy scribbling away in notes to take old ladies to the lavatory or help them with their dinner? Disgusting! In my experience of hospitals, nursing and medical staff are generally caring, hardworking and conscientious. Clearly the NHS should not support slovenliness,

laziness, carelessness or negligence and every measure should be taken to ensure jobs are done efficiently and effectively by caring people. If patient care is wanting, if patients do not get the timely help they need with feeding, washing and toiletting, it is usually because someone else’s need is more urgent, not because the nurses have their feet up. Working in the NHS is often more about firefighting and crisis management than rearranging doilies on seatbacks. Everyday, there is too much need and too few people to provide care, so we have to prioritise. Ironically, it is often Government targets and guidelines that create so much paperwork in the first place. There has to be a balance. Documentation and communication is essential to

good patient care. It protects patients and staff. It is a naively romantic notion to assume it is enough to do the job well. We all have to create a papertrail which proves we have done so. The answer is to provide enough staff to do all jobs and attend to all patients properly. But that would cost more money.... Sorry David, own goal. Dr Sarah trained in medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.
