Good advice from Nigel at Panic Plumbing & Electrics Don’t wait until you have a leak, find out where your stop tap is

Where is it? It is very important to know where your Internal Stop Tap is located within your property in case of an emergency. Although it is usually located under the kitchen sink, it can often be in a utility room, garage or downstairs toilet. If you have difficulty locating yours, it may be worth checking with your neighbours as theirs will be in a similar location. Does it work? Once you have located your Stop-Tap, you need to ensure it is operable. You can do this by turning them fully off then on again, around 2-3 times per year. Stop-Taps are prone to faults, generally due to infrequent use and lack of regular maintenance. The spindle of the tap and the packing-gland nut oxidise (rust) over time which has the effect of ‘bonding’ to the two together. If you don’t regularly operate them, you won’t know until you need to use it. What to do? If you find your stop-tap is faulty, you will need to have a replacement stop-tap or maybe you could consider a Surestop unit which is a stop-tap operated by a switch. The new Surestop Remote Stopcock is WRAS approved for installation as a stop-tap. As a Surestop Platinum Approved Installer, I am able to assist you with this. Please visit www.panicservices.co.uk/surestop Knocking pipework. - What can this be? Not all plumbing noises can be so extreme but I recently visit a flood in progress which was caused by pipework that was not clipped securely to a wall. Whenever the tap was used, there was a loud knocking noise which was from movement in the pipe. In time this movement created a weakness in the pipe and a flood ensued! Outside Tap Insulation - Taking the brunt of the weather. When outside taps freeze, the ice can travel into the pipework on the inside of your property which can be a huge problem. Beat Jack Frost by insulating your outside taps. Internal Stop-cock (Nowadays called the “Stop-Tap”)

Many people feel that classical music is only for the elite. Can you dispel this myth? This is a rotten myth! Anyone can enjoy classical music - all you need is a willingness to listen to the unfamiliar. I like to talk to audiences to help enhance the experience of what they are about to hear, highlight special features and share anecdotes about the composer or the piece’s creation. Aside from music, tell us about some other interests that give you pleasure. I am a huge sports fan and enjoy gardening on a Saturday afternoon whilst listening to sports coverage on the radio. I’m especially delighted that John Inverdale (sports commentator) supports the orchestra and will be the narrator in our January concert. I also find cooking therapeutic and love walking my dog, Soot. A New Year makes us think about fresh goals. What are yours? I aim to keep spreading the good news about Worthing’s fabulous professional orchestra; the Sussex International Piano Competition, which we host this year; and one of Worthing’s greatest community assets – the acoustically stupendous Assembly Hall. You are a great advocate of British music. Which piece or composer first inspired this love? It’s impossible to pin down any one piece; however, I remember discovering Walton’s First Symphony while studying at Lancing College and playing it so often I wore the record out. Having worked with the Worthing Orchestra since 1997, you are clearly familiar with the town. What in Worthing continues to delight you? Walking on the Pier after a big storm has passed. John Gibbons will be conducting the Worthing Symphony Orchestra on Sunday 6 January with a selection of Family Favourites at the Assembly Hall, Worthing. He will be joined by Latvian pianist Art Arnicane and John Inverdale.

New plans to link businesses with events for 2013

The Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce Hospitality and Tourism group have been working hard over the past few months to work on a strategy to help businesses and consumers benefit more from our tourism industry here on the coast. Whilst plans are in progress to launch the Tourism Showcase, the group have also recently agreed to launch a series of events throughout Worthing and Adur to highlight the local amenities and attractions on offer within the area and provide opportunities for additional business networking for local companies. The events will come under the banner of ‘Let us Entertain You.’ with a tagline of ‘Adding value by linking businesses and events’ and whilst these will be Chamber of Commerce Events, business people will be invited to bring non members and guests to support each event. The first event is planned to be in Shoreham towards the end of February 2013 and Essentially Worthing will publish more details in our next issue, but, if you are a local venue who would be interested in hosting an event further in the year and showing yourselves off to a large group of business people, then please do get in touch with the

group via the Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce, www.worthingandadurchamber.co.uk, and lets all work together to fully promote our area. Sheryl Tipton - Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Group lead.

What is the Worthing and Adur Fund ? Worthing Mayor Charles James explains why he supports smaller local organisations Founded to support charities and community groups in the local area, the Worthing and Adur Fund is particularly interested in supporting smaller organisations where a grant can make a significant difference, and is supported by The Worshipful the Mayor of Worthing, Cllr Charles James. Speaking about the fund The Mayor said “I chose the Worthing & Adur Fund as my charity for the year because it enables smaller local charities and voluntary bodies, who do not have the high profile and fundraising abilities of larger, more well known charities, to access funds for their groups and projects. The Fund was formed with donations from local businesses and individuals who were keen to take a lead in building this permanent fund, which will support local charities and community groups now and into the future.” Working in partnership, the Sussex Community Foundation and the Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce, fundraising events and donations increase the funds available, and this money has helped some of our area’s smaller groups with vital resources. The Joyfuls which is a social club for those aged 60 and over and has been running for over 20 years in Lancing is just one of these groups, along with West Durrington Phoenix Youth Club, which is a drop in club for 12-16 years, Worthing Creative Dance Classes, a dance club for older people and Worthing Kids and Dapper Snapper , which is a group dedicated to providing information and support to children with special needs. The Mayor of Worthing Annual Charity Swim, which is being held at the Aquarena on Saturday 23rd March 2013, will also raise money for the Worthing and Adur Fund and is open to all swimmers, regardless of age or abilities. For more information please visit www.worthing.gov.uk. To donate, or gain more information about the fund in general please visit www.worthingandadurfund.org.

New Year, New Way to achieve your resolutions Get started by making small changes to kick those lifelong habits Why do we choose the New Year to pressure ourselves to change? It is traditionally time for resolutions but it also tends to be grey, cold and wet, we’re paying off Christmas and it seems almost impossible to be motivated! You can’t change lifelong habits overnight so…. this year, why not chose to do it differently? Begin the year by listing things you’d like to change and plan them throughout the year. Factor in key times where childcare might prove difficult or you’re under more pressure at work. Kick start your motivation by starting with something small. So many of us are so busy at looking at the bigger picture it just seems too daunting to tackle. If you break this down into bite size chunks and plan your changes throughout the year, it will feel more do-able and you are more likely to succeed. Changing habits takes commitment and that’s taking one small step each day but making sure you take that step. Don’t sign up for a Marathon if you want to start running. Commit to learning to run and gradually build up daily practice to create a habit. It’s the same with all your goals, start small and grow. Focus on the end reward, how you will feel at the end of the year when you know you’ve achieved some of your goals if not all of them? Imagine what it will feel like to be able to tell people you’ve “quit smoking and have done for 10/12 months now?” The answer is FANTASTIC! Good luck & Happy New Year. Kate Tilston Life Coaching. Prevention is the key to good health

Dr Patel from the Richmond Clinic answers the most often asked questions Q: What is Chiropractic healthcare? A: Chiropractic is the third largest primary medical healthcare profession next to medicine and dentistry. Discovered in 1893 by D.D. Palmer in 1893, chiropractors detect and treat the underlying root cause of biomechanical pains (joint, nerve and muscular symptoms). Q: Who can see a chiropractor? A: In the UK 100,000 people consulted a chiropractor in 2011. A chiropractor can treat almost everyone from newborn (colic, asthma, ear infection) pregnant women (postural changes), sportsman ( shin splints, tendonitis, ligament strains), office workers (carpel tunnel, RSI) to the senior citizen (sciatica, lumbago, arthritis, frozen shoulder). Chiropractors specialise in improving the function of a joint or the spine, by increasing the neutral flow benefitting and improving organ function. Patients are often referred by their GP or other medical professionals. Q: Why don’t Doctors of chiropractic prescribe drugs? A: Chiropractors are trained in pharmacology and are aware of all prescriptive medications their side-effects and the secondary problems of taking medications such as osteoporosis occurring if for example Omaprazole is taken for long period of time. Chiropractic philosophy emphasises restoring the normal function of the nervous system, the skeletal and soft tissues/holding structures (muscles and ligaments) through the use of natural methods. Pain, swelling and muscle spasms are signs of altered function of an area. Chiropractors use these signs and symptoms to determine the underlying cause of the pain. In contrast, drugs mask the symptoms, reduce pain for a short time or create side effects accelerating a small problem to become chronic with time which often takes longer to resolve or treat. Q: Why are X-Rays and Thermodynamic scans taken? A: X-Rays provide a definitive diagnosis, eliminate pathologies, reveal the structure, quality and alignment of bone or joint area of concern and thereby enable this to be treated more accurately with fast results. Spinal decay or degeneration cannot be identified without some form of imaging. A Chiropractor can refer a patient for an MRI or CT scan to monitor a patient’s progress improvements to the structure and function. A Digital Thermographic Spinal Scan (a safe non-invasive scan that can also be used on babies and pregnant females)shows results in infra-red detecting abnormal spinal heat levels on soft tissues and ‘hot spots’ to pin point area of the root cause of pain.

Q: How much does it cost? A: We provide a free, no cost spinal screening to enable you to enable you to meet us, briefly assess your condition and provide you with a treatment plan with an outline of our costs. Depending upon the duration of pain, its cause, your age, occupation and day-to-day activities, an assessment with individual care takes into account past and present medical history. A comprehensive medical examination to include postural, orthopaedic, muscle testing, neurological and a spinal examination will provide a diagnosis and treatment plan to suit your individual needs. We offer a cost effective service, have been established since 1993 and are recognised by all leading medical health insurance companies. Q: How much X-Ray radiation is involved? A: Chiropractors measure the patient’s body density (thickness of the body) using a calliper to calculate the smallest amount of exposure to the patient, depending on the patient’s body size, film sensitivity and collimation (narrowing) of the X-Ray beam. It is the natural approach of the Chiropractic and the ethos of health care that have been instrumental in reducing the patient’s exposure to X-Rays and Chiropractors fully endorse the new digital scanning technologies.

Give your business the fitness test Helen Scott offers tips and advice for 2013 Happy New Year! I hope that you have been able to spend time with your family and friends, have re-charged your batteries and are now raring to go to develop and grow your business in 2013. This time of year, there is often much discussion of New Year resolutions – have you made any resolutions for your business for 2013 and if so, what are they? Healthy Business January is a great time to look at the health and well-being of your business. How well and healthy is it? Do you have any plans for your business, and if so, what are they? Perhaps you are looking to move into an office, take on some employees, access funding or write a business plan. Here at the Funding Mentor we offer business mentoring and support to help your business to grow. I can help you to find funding, write bids, create a funding strategy or a mix of all three. And as it is January, I am offering a Business Healthcheck: carrying out an independent and in-depth analysis of all aspects of your business and making recommendations for next steps. If you feel that this is something that your business could benefit from, then I would love to hear from you.

Art is the name of the game … And they want to play the game with you! What do bids make? Prizes – thanks to The Regeneration Game, a new arts grant scheme launched in Worthing this week. Worthing Arts (formerly known as Worthing Arts Council) have five pots of £300 available to artists in the area to help them produce new works of art or performances that capture the growing spirit of regeneration in Worthing. To bid for one of the £300 grants all you need to do is contact Worthing Arts through Karen Simporis (k.simporis1@ ntlworld.com or ring 01903 202767) and you’ll get an application form to fill in with your ideas, as well as guidance on how to bid and valuable advice about arts funding. Karen, in her role of Chair of Worthing Arts told us “We want to see innovative and exciting ideas for arts projects ones that make use of different types and styles of media and are a good example of people working together. We know Worthing has so much to offer creatively, let’s see what you’ve got!” Applications must be submitted by Friday 1st February 2013 and all applicants will be judged by a Worthing Arts Panel, against agreed criteria. The winners will be announced at a special Worthing Arts networking event at the end of February. It is hoped that the works of art (or performances) will be on display throughout Summer 2013.

I am also a qualified mentor - have you considered mentoring? Mentoring is a very powerful tool that can unlock the potential of your business by providing you with the opportunity to look at your business without any other distractions and with external mentoring and support from myself to guide you. If any of the services of The Funding Mentor are of interest to you, do please get in touch. Details, as always, at the end of this article. Clutter Free One thing I do manage to do each year with my business is to de-clutter my office – and what a therapeutic experience it is! I put on some loud, disco mix (I was a 70s / 80s child) and recycle or shred paper with a vengeance. This year I was pleased to see that I had less paper to destroy than the previous year...which reminds me, make sure you declutter your files on the computer and your emails. De-clutter that office!

Grant of the Month Hot Galaxy, Warm Heart Launches 7th January 2013 - Supporting warm hearted people and projects Galaxy are looking to help small, local community based projects and community minded people through our GALAXY Hot Chocolate Fund. Richard Ambridge recommends the grape that is naturally lower in alcohol

No need for abstinence in January The festivities are over with for another year and maybe the excesses of Christmas have taken their toll. Some will be starting diets, some booking holidays and some maybe suffering from S.A.D. I prefer to use other acronym’s - Syrah and Duck, or even Serve another Drink ! There are, however several ways to enjoy a tipple without resorting to total abstinence. Riesling, traditionally more of a summer choice, can be enjoyed especially at this time of the year, whether from Germany, Alsace, USA, the Antipodes or wherever in this fast expanding world of wine production. It is a grape that is frequently lower in alcohol than many of its counterparts and can be enjoyed with a great variety of oriental dishes, including imaginative uses of the Christmas ‘leftovers’ with a stir-fry or similar. Riesling is also a great friend with hard-to-match salads, showing it can work well with other delights other than with summery Crab for instance. Winter still has a traditional red wine feel as the many casseroles and roasts demonstrate. There are many reds to be found for 13% or less that can accommodate these dishes. Rioja’s & Claret’s historically are at this level and one could look around for Pinot Noirs, Merlots and Barbera Now enough about being sagacious and sensible - what about a little indulgence to ease the onslaught of a cold, wet and wintry day. A real ‘blockbuster’ can lift not only the spirits ! The aptly named Haras de Pirque Character can do this - it is rapidly becoming an iconic Chilean wine,a blend of principally Cabernet Sauvignon & Carmenere,& wonderfully rich in flavour with great depth. It is 14.5% but you don’t get the alcohol burn on the aftertaste that many cheaper New World offerings show. At £13.95 its not exactly cheap but a great little treat. Happy New Year and I look forward to sharing my love of wine with Essentially Worthing readers in 2013. Grapes, 10 Prospect Place, Worthing, BN11 3BL. Come fly with me

Airport Manager Ric Belfield reflects on 2012 and gives us details on exciting plans for 2013 How was 2012 at Brighton Shoreham Airport, what were the highlights? 2012 was a very tough year for the General Aviation industry. Brighton Shoreham Airport and the operators based here have had a challenging 12 months. Alongside the double dip recession we have had to cope with the worst weather for over 100 years and severe restrictions placed on flying during the Olympics and Paralympics. The major highlights for the airport were Rebranding the Airport as Brighton Shoreham Airport to align ourselves more closely with our local City whilst retaining our important local heritage. Licensing the restaurant in the Terminal Building to local company Truffles who have just finished refurbishing the restaurant and bringing it back to its 1930 Jazz Art Deco splendour and relaunched it as “The Hummingbird” named after the first plane to flown from the Airport in 1910 by Harold Piffard. It really is truly stunning. Are there any new plans for Brighton Shoreham Airport in 2013? New scheduled service for Paris starts in March. Plans submitted for recladding the Municipal Hangar and Terminal Building external works which we are awaiting approval for and will give the heart of the Airport a new lease of life. The Draft Adur Local Planning process over the next 2 years provides a golden opportunity to put together a 10 year master Plan for the Airport, creating long term sustainability and stimulating significant numbers of new local jobs.

Essential Profile E

W 17

What events are coming up that are open to the public? There is a growing calendar of events planned at the airport including: Big Band Jazz evenings every second Tuesday. Shoreham Airport Society meet every month – all new members welcome. Tuesday 1st Jan Jazz afternoon and high tea. Sunday Feb 17th Valentines fly in, plus music afternoon. Wed evening 6th March - an evening of Clairvoyance. ( these evenings are booked twice a month starting now right through till 17th December 2013) Gallery exhibition of local works 13th Feb to 16th March. Tues 16th March an evening of alternative therapies. 6th March BCA start first scheduled flights. Gallery exhibition by Jean Davey Winter 17th March – 16th April. Aero jumble on the 10 acre site Saturday 6th April. Bunnies and Chicks Easter fly in Sunday 7th April, party, band food etc. Gallery exhibition by Andrew Castle 1st May – 31st May. Wed 5th June spiritual information workshop. Artscape art collective 2 week arts and crafts exhibition in the Pashley & Miles 30th May – 17th June. Gallery exhibition by Nigel French 1st June – 30th June. Brighton Rock fly in Sat 6th/Sun 7th July with fish and chip supper, themed 60’s party and vesper club. Gallery exhibition by Andrew Harris 1st July – 26th August. What’s your new year’s resolution? To get out and about promoting the vision for our airport and engaging with the local community. I already have talks booked with a couple of Rotary Clubs and the local Chamber of Commerce. More to come. What 2013 sporting occasion are you most looking forward to? The back to back Ashes series. Mouth-watering prospect for ardent cricket fans. Just fantastic to see how smoothly Cook has slipped into the captains role. the song but that was pure coincidence.

Dr Sarah has the last word It’s definitely not a happy and healthy new year in A&E

Ah, January. Everyone’s least favourite month. It’s cold dark, poor and snotty and here in hospital medicine, a miserable time looms. The wards are full of broken hips, abandoned elders, wheezy kids and seas of diarrhoea and vomit. It does seem ironic that after the Christmas period when we have all bought wholesale (quite literally) into a festival based upon very little good scientific evidence, that we shun medical practices based on sound science and many, many years of research. Why are we more willing to believe the nice lady in the health food shop than someone with more than a degree from the University of Mumbo-Jumbo? Why do we buy arnica and ecinacea by the bucket load, but seem reluctant to take proper pain relief when something hurts? Of course, I respect anyone’s right to believe whatever they want to, however flimsy the evidence may seem, and whatever my personal views. But if you do believe in mustard poultices and the tooth fairy, please please don’t share it with me at 2 in the morning in the middle of a busy shift! Since I am fortunate enough to have a public platform from which to redress the balance, may I just say, for anyone still in doubt: ANTIBIOTICS ARE FOR BACTERIAL INFECTIONS- and ps. the singular of bacteria is bacteriumapologies, just another personal bugbear, if you’ll forgive the pun. I would like to share a significant piece of research published recently in The Lancet Infectious Diseases. This is a respected and august publication. The study was carried out in over 12 European countries, including our own and recruited over 2,000 adult patients with acute seasonal respiratory illnesses. The patients were randomly

assigned to receive either an antibiotic or a placebo (a dummy pill). It found that after 7 days of taking the ‘treatment’- whether real or placebo- there was very little difference in the symptoms or the outcome between the groups. This is new research, on a grand scale, carried out in many countries. Similar smallerscale studies have emerged with comparable findings in the past. In fact, it is not just that taking antibiotics for a probable viral illness is pointless and may lead to unpleasant side-effects. Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest challenges facing medical science in the modern era. Put simply, the bugs are cleverer than we are and seem to have an almost infinite capacity to mutate and outsmart. The point is, we are right in the middle of the sickly season. If you do find yourself afflicted there is very little to be gained by leaving your nice, warm

house to sit in a waiting room full of similarly afflicted souls, only to be told some hours later that you probably have a virus. Exceptions to this are the very old, very young and those with other significant health concerns who may be less resilient than the rest of us. You will feel awful, you’ll even smell awful. It’s called being ill. Take paracetamol, plenty of fluids and cosy up under the duvet til it all blows over...or out.. Get well soon! Dr Sarah trained in medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.
