Personally speaking With the Worthing Festival set to take place this July, Essentially Worthing went to find out a little more about the organisation behind it all. Hazel Thorpe, President of the Worthing Lions, gives us a glimpse into her world. After retiring from teaching seven years ago, I wanted to use my free time purposefully. I volunteer for a number of charities, most notably: Home-Start, Enable Me and Maybridge Keystone Centre. In addition to this, I am a councillor for Tarring and especially enjoy the opportunities that role gives to help residents. Through councillor events, I was introduced to the Lions and I’ve been a member now for five years. As my main interest is in welfare issues, I’ve found the Lions the perfect match in terms of helping others. We operate at both the individual and group level. For an individual, we might give time, a listening ear and practical aid. At the group level, we can assist in coordinating voluntary groups. The charity market at Steyne Gardens this month, for example, gives organisations an opportunity to raise funds or simply raise awareness. A hugely successful project has been in bringing businesses, shops and schools together to create Christmas care boxes for soldiers in the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment serving abroad. Another has been our second hand book stall which has raised £4,000 for Worthing Hospital. Our most visible event, of course, is the festival, which requires a team of ten to plan. And all this has to begin a year in advance! Fortunately, we have Friends of the Lions to help at such large events and we are always delighted to find additional, young and committed members. My favourite part of the festival, as for many, has to be the firework display. This is paid for entirely by the Lions and what I would really like is for local businesses to offer sponsorship so that more of our collections can go to those people who need it. The Lions’ motto is, ‘We serve’ and in doing so, we hope to make Worthing better.

The Big Air Open Kitesurfing Classic comes to Worthing How high can they jump at this new and exciting sporting event ? Worthing is proud to welcome an inaugural sporting event to the town - The Big Air Open Kitesurfing Classic, which will be taking place on Saturday 14th July 2012 at Worthing seafront. The Big Air Open has been organised and supported by Worthing Borough Council as part of the Olympic Torch Relay Weekend and it is set to become a classic Kitesurfing event well beyond the Olympic year. Lewis Crathern, Worthing resident and Kitesurfing Champion is well known internationally for his big air skills & pier jumping being actively involved in bringing the event to his home town and will be commentating at the event. The event is based on a ‘how high can you jump format’ with points being awarded for the maximum height reached. Entry to the event is limited to a total of 36 places, 12 of which are local wildcards, and at the time of writing the event was nearly sold out. The winner will be taking home a cash prize of £800 sponsored by Kingsley Eco Solutions as well as the sought after title of ‘Big Air Open Champion 2012’. The Big Air Open takes place from 9am to 6pm on Saturday 14th July on Worthing seafront. Spectators, kitesurf enthusiasts and anyone who wants to get in the spirit of the Olympic Torch Relay Weekend is invited to come down to the beach to show support, watch the action and cheer on the guys and girls on the water. Go to www.thebigairopen.com for further details about The Big Air Open Kitesurfing Classic.

At Essentially Worthing, we are thrilled that the Big Air Open tournament, the first of its kind in the UK, will take place in Worthing. Lewis Crathern, key coordinator and international kitesurfer, says “I am extremely excited about The Big Air Open, especially as it takes place in my home town of Worthing. This will be an amazing format for Kitesurfers of all levels to take on the wind and waves, show off their skills and compete for The Big Air Open Title. We have all worked hard on making this one of the best Kitesurfing competitions of the year!” Competitors will be relieved to hear that Lewis will not be competing on the day but instead judging and commentating. Entrants will be judged on how high they can jump and it should provide an amazing visual spectacle. The winner will take the grand cash prize and the Big Air Open Champion 2012 title. The event runs from 9am until 6pm, so head down to the seafront and support these amazing athletes. Like air – it’s free.

The Burlington Brings the Magic of Oz to Worthing

As the official hotel partner for The Big Air Open Kitesurfing Classic, the Burlington hotel has designed a week of Australian themed food and entertainment to create an atmosphere to match this fantastic beach event. Andrea Pagliaro explains.

I was sitting on the balcony at The Burlington, facing the fog and wind, when an idea came to mind. If the summer doesn’t come to Worthing this year, we can make the summer ourselves! The fun starts with you being dressed in beachwear, which is the dress code. (Fake tan is not compulsory, though.) Yes, there will be bikinis, cocktails and surfboards here at Gio’s! The Burlington summer begins on 7 July with live music and Aussie drinks at our Surf Party. While we make the cocktails for you, at 5.30pm Brucie will crack on with his barbie at Gio’s. We’ve hired a superb local band to get the party rocking in our club from 7pm to 11pm. The DJ will then keep the dance floor busy with fabulous tunes until late. Our photographer will be ready to take shots of you on the board, and you can test your skills on the surf simulator too!

We’ll have footage from the party, so if you’re in it, we’ll sort out a copy for you. This night is the opening of The Week of Oz @ The Burlington. Check out the menu on the opposite page to see what we’ll serve all week from 12 noon to 3pm and 6pm to 9pm until 15 July. 14 July is dedicated to a major event that I can’t wait for – The Big Air Open Kitesurfing Classic! There will be some great jumps out on the water that day and lots of ‘wows’ from the audience - at least from me there will! So that you won’t miss any of the guys and girls doing their awesome tricks, our Aussie meals will be packed for you to take away so that you can enjoy the day with a satisfied stomach. At its launch, Choccywoccydoodah joined the celebrations and the designer confectioners feature Doodley Dogs in their episode ‘Four Legged Friends’, which will be aired on the UK Good Food Channel at 9pm on 3 July. Fortunately, Leon, a former ITV children’s television presenter, had no need to be camera shy. Leon and Matt have provided a brilliant, funky space for dogs coupled with professional expertise. Matt is qualified to take puppy and obedience classes and Leon to aid injured or water-shy dogs in their bespoke Canine Hydrotherapy Suite. All dogs are welcome, whatever their size or age. The centre also offers a one-stop shop plus a resident groomer too. And if your dog needs to stay a little longer, they can enjoy a boutique hotel room with gorgeous murals and matching accessories. Their recipe for success? Leon says, ‘Our secret ingredient lies in knowing each and every customer.’ An approach, it seems, which ensures perfect results, every time.

Summer Edition 2012

The Worthing Community Partnership’s Proud Launch of Active Age We, at the Worthing Community Partnership (WPC), are delighted with how well our first edition, launched in April, of the Active Age Newsletter has gone, showing us that there is a real need for an information sheet of this sort in Worthing. We have had an excellent response and hope that you will take advantage of our subscription service so that we can continue to reach those parts of Worthing that other parts can’t reach! As some of our readers may know, the WPC was set up over 10 years ago to raise money that we can feed back as grants into worthy causes in Worthing through our Community Chest.

Congratulations on a really revived and lively magazine! You really have given it the kiss of life!, Active Age is a splendid idea. In the Worthing area a lot of over 60s are plain lonely and never meet new people, I’d like to suggest an idea of travelling companions or a Bus Pass Pal, that people could call and up and travel with. A list of people, with just first names and telephone numbers, to extend their circle of friends, so they could have a companion to window shop with or have a coffee with. It could be a godsend in this area. Bel Bailey, Lancing Editor: What a great idea Bel!, I’ve passed your ideas to the Outreach team at Guild Care. Somewhere else to meet new friends is the Tea & Chat groups run by Guild Care. May I ask if there are any singing or acting groups for fun in Worthing? It’s really good to express oneself and I feel it would be a good way of meeting people and making new friends. I would also be interested in organised trips, short breaks to interesting places such as an animal sanctuary or a stately home. Rose Bell, Worthing Editor: Dear Rose, there are several singing groups in the area, but one especially for over 60s is “Singing for Pleasure”, which is organised by Guild Care Outreach, at the River of Life Church and is lead by Aiden whose expertise in music is too long to print here! Songs range from “Tie me kangaroo down sport” to more serious pieces, with the emphasis on fun and meeting people. We will highlight the acting groups in our next edition. If any of you would like to start a “fun acting” group, let us know and we will put you in touch with each other.

Age is in the mind!

If you think you are too old to take up a sport or hobby, think again! A 73 year old Japanese woman has recently climbed Mount Everest, smashing the record for the oldest woman to scale the world’s highest Mountain. Tamae Watanabe reached Everest’s 29,035ft summit from the northern side with four other team members. The oldest man to climb the mountain is a Nepalese man, Min Bahadur Sherchan, who reached the summit in 2008 at the age of 76! And what about Betty and Beryl?! They beat off steep opposition from the likes of Radio 1’s Chris Moyles and Radio 2’s Chris Evans to win the converted prize of best entertainment radio programme at Sony’s Radio Awards last month. They were spotted by David Reeves from BBC Radio Humberside and are now regular presenters with David on his radio show. Betty and Beryl said, “We’re not old we are recycled teenagers”. Betty Smith, 90, and Beryl Renwick, 86, are great friends, are both widows and have lived in Hull all their lives. They met 10 years ago at a local luncheon club.

Come and make new friends this summer! In our last issue we mentioned our new Full of Beans service for active people over 50. More than 100 people turned up for the Taster Day and the service has been running at the Healthy Living Centre (Methold House), North Street, Worthing on Mondays since 14 May. On offer is Tai-Chi, Yoga and Zumba Gold as well as special coffees, light lunches and various one-off activities. Last week, I overheard one of the ladies taking part in the Zumba Gold class saying, “It’s hard work but I haven’t laughed so much in ages!” Why not pop in next Monday? The buses stop virtually opposite at Worthing Town Hall. It is an ideal venue for making new friends and very close to the centre of town. And, speaking of making new friends, our Outreach Team organises regular Tea and Chat meetings in the community. These are a great opportunity to make new friends in a small group at a local café. We organise four meetings to encourage people to get to know each other better. At the end of the sessions, people usually will have made a new friend and quite a few of the groups continue to meet afterwards. Ruby, a participant from a previous group, told me once that she wished she had more time to do all the new things she discovered since she joined. For information on Full of Beans, please call Jacqui on 01903 528610. And for information on Tea and Chat, call me on 01903 528 627. Don’t be shy, come and try something new!

Nationwide Housing Association, Affinity Sutton, is proud to be sponsoring this edition of Active Age. Ours is an organisation rich in history where we can trace our business for social purpose ethos back to 1900 when Victorian philanthropist, William Sutton, bequeathed his fortune to a charitable trust to provide affordable housing. Merging in 2006 with Downland Housing and Broomleigh Housing, it now forms one of the largest housing groups in this sector. Today we have over 161,000 people calling Affinity Sutton houses “their home”. One thing hasn’t changed though – our commitment to maximise life chances for our residents and create places for communities to thrive. Affinity Sutton has 16 retirement schemes across the South of England which are usually allocated to applicants who are over retirement age, although in some cases homes can be offered to those over 50. The Retirement Scheme Manager’s role is to support these residents, encourage independence and help organise social activities. In the south area, 3 retired residents take part in the resident’s area participation panel, and one lady who is in her 80s actually chairs this group.

We also have a new project called Cultiv8, in which we encourage residents to grow their own, by providing them with a raised bed and encouraging local communities to start a community garden. The Neighbourhood Investment team is supporting Activ8, a project being developed by Affinity Sutton to encourage residents to be active, not only in mind but in body as well. In Plymouth, a singing group has been set up and in Guildford residents have benefited from being shown how to use a computer. We are now turning our attention to West Sussex and are planning to work with local community groups to provide activities for residents and the local community under the Activ8 banner. If you run a local community group and provide a service that is of benefit to our residents, you can apply for a Community Grant. So far, over £175,000 has been awarded to 61 projects that have benefited 5,400 Affinity Sutton residents. If you would like to apply please contact your local Neighbourhood Investment Officer on 0300 100 0303 or email affinitysuttonfund@capitalcf.org.uk. Your local neighbourhood investment officer is Jane Haskins. Email her at jane.haskins@affinitysutton.com or call her on 07703 887266.

I read the advert claiming it was not a like a traditional gym and thought, well, I am going to do exercise using equipment following a circuit. Yeah, really sounded different, so I put the advert to one side and carried on being right. Next advert and I have to admit that the free trial and the pictures of how the ladies have changed made me have a look at the website. I watched the video and it did look different, with real members speaking about how it has changed things for them. It made me look at the other pages, other written testimonials from other real members. Snap out of it! I thought. They have just been lucky or workout every hour on the hour, so again I carried on my life knowing that I am right still, but also having this nagging doubt at the back of my mind. What if it does work? Advert number three and another couple of ladies who had a before and after picture and looked great. Okay, I thought, maybe it is time to take them up on the free trial. I called them and got booked in. Still I had some doubts, but after all it was free. Now, the rest, as they say, is history. It was nothing like I imagined and nothing like any other gym I have been to before. The staff really do put you at ease and make you feel that you can and will achieve your goals. There is a real mix of age groups, it has a safe social environment that makes going enjoyable and dare I say it fun. You never feel alone and you always have help on hand if you need it. After just 9 months, I have already changed how I look and feel. I have lost 17.5 inches and 8lbs. I have so much more energy and I feel great about myself. I have been re-educated on a lot of things, but the most invaluable for me has been the need to drink more water. The power of drinking water is remarkable and when coupled with regular exercise and a greater understanding of my own diet, the results are great and the weight is continuing to drop off. Don’t put it off like I did. Call them now - yes, today! The trial is free. You are under no obligation to join, but my experience says you will and it will be the best thing you do this year.

After years of trying lots of different diets and types of exercise I really did think that I was one of those people who could never achieve the look and inch loss I wanted. That all changed for me 7 months ago when I plucked up the courage and joined BodyShapers. As you join they ask you your personal goals and what you want to achieve, they put you at ease and for me made me feel as though I had already started on a journey that would change my life. I wanted to look and feel better about myself, feel more confident and make those day to day jobs feel a little less exhausting. Well, it has worked, my life is now being lived rather than me going through the motions. I have lost 35 inches and 1stone 6lbs

already and all my friends and family have noticed a new level of confidence and calmness about me, not to mention that I look so different. The membership is only £400 for the year and covers 121 consultations and personalised programmes on the machines along with regular progress sessions to check how I am doing. There is also a free meal planner and food diaries that are really helpful. Would I recommend BodyShapers? Yes, of course, and I have already. The membership is great value and, once paid, the only thing you will need to save for is your new smaller wardrobe. Bodyshapers, 76 Manor Road, Lancing. 01903 755700 www.bsos.me

essential Beach Life E 22

W

Good food and great ambience at Coast Cafe Jane Hicks is impressed with this bohemian bistro on the beach

Five years ago, you wouldn’t have given this café a second look. Set on the beach between Denton Gardens and the Aquarena behind the A259 Brighton Road, this small, flint-faced building used to be a shabby icecream kiosk where you could get take-away teas if out on the beach. Five years on, it is now a popular bistro/café bar with a definite bohemian feel. Owner Stefan Sykes, an Economic and Regeneration Consultant, told me that when he moved to Worthing from London, he felt that this part of the beach was under-developed and ignored by the authorities. Being on the promenade - therefore no traffic and with the park so near, as well as being close to the town, he saw what is now Coast Café as an opportunity to bring something special and to inject some life into the area. Having presented plans to the Borough Council, Stefan set about making alterations to the building to maximise the available space and transform it into a café/bistro. His vision was to encourage music, arts and crafts, and with the acquisition of five adjoining beach huts which he converted into studios, various artists and craftsmen/women now rent and use these as workshop spaces and exhibition areas. Coast Café itself hosts frequent music events with live bands as well as DJ events and dancing. They can seat up to 20 on the ground floor and on the beach decking outside, there is seating for 40/50. Upstairs, there is seating for a further 20 (plus up to 60 standing on sun terrace outside). The upstairs room can also be hired for private functions. Opening hours are 9.30am-5pm Sunday-Thursday and they stay open until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Stefan is keen to use local food producers and buys organic beef from Great Barn Farm, Washington and sausages from Bridge Farm, Hampshire. He also offers a Summer Ale which comes from Turners Micro-Brewery, the newest brewery in Sussex. And I was impressed by the fact that all the food is prepared from scratch – nothing is bought pre-prepared. Full English breakfasts are available as well as light snacks - their Chestnut Mushrooms on Toast offer something a little different from the ‘norm’. The lunch and evening menus include both English and Mediterranean dishes such as home-made Moussaka, Mezze and Greek Salad. They have a Children’s Menu too, although you can order a small portion of anything from the main menu if you prefer. The Daily Specials Board includes dishes such as Baked Ratatouille and Feta on Flatbread, or Toasted Goat’s Cheese with Red Onion Marmalade. I decided to sample the Butternut Squash, Ricotta Cheese and Chilli Fritatta with a Rocket Salad. This was well presented, beautifully light, and tasted as delicious as it looked. And the coffee is good, too – mellow without being bitter!

All in all, I loved this place – the food was good and the ambience great – I felt like I was in Covent Garden in London, or Montmartre in Paris, not Worthing in West Sussex! As part of the Food & Drink Festival to be held on 7th & 14th July, Coast is providing a local meat and fish BBQ on the beach. Why not check it out? www.coastcafe-worthing.co.uk

It’s Party Time at Splash

W 23

Paul Williams is looking forward to the garden party It’s unbelievable how fast 2012 is moving! Just a couple of days ago I was reliably informed that we had already got ‘halfway to Christmas’, which, believe me is a frightening thought! However, July it is, and the Splash FM Garden Party is coming! It all takes place on Saturday 21st. If you haven’t got your tickets yet, snap them up NOW! Advance tickets are just £6 and available at www.splashfm.com and from a number of outlets across the area. See you there! ...by the way, if you’re reading this AFTER the 21st of July – wasn’t it great?!!! Even though the year is more than half over, and there is such a temptation to say “stop the year, I want to get off !”, sadly we can’t! Nothing ever stands still at Splash, and we have some very exciting things in the pipeline for the second half of the year (there is something particularly special coming up this October that I KNOW you will love, and will want to get involved with – but that’s for later, I’m getting ahead of myself !)

One of the next big things we’re looking ahead to is “The Child Of Sussex Awards” at the end of September. This is an event that we’re very proud to be part of. The awards are designed to celebrate the achievements of the county’s most precious asset: its children. Last year’s inaugural event was held at Brighton’s Grand Hotel, and was a huge success, full of emotional and uplifting stories that truly reflect the amazing qualities of our children. Winners from this area included Daniel Torricelli from Worthing, who saved his older sister, who suffers from spinal muscular atrophy, from choking. Also picking up an award was Lara WilliamsLourenco from Lancing who, over the years, has endured over 100 hospitalisations and more than a dozen operations.

Despite this, she works tirelessly to raise awareness of her condition, and support the hospitals that have cared for her, including the Beach Ward at Worthing Hospital and Great Ormond Street in London. It was truly an inspiring evening – and we hope that this year’s event will be even bigger and better. The Child Of Sussex Awards for 2012 take place at the glorious American Express Community Stadium at Falmer on Friday 28th September. If you’d like to find out more, or make a nomination, just go to www.childofsussex.co.uk

Bites, cuts and broken limbs. Just keep calm and carry on ... I was asked to write a piece for the coming summer break entitled ‘When to Panic’. Of course my answer to that would be never panic, defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as...’sudden uncontrollable fear or anxiety, often causing wildly unthinking behaviour...’ You can see my point. Even in the most minor crisis, this reaction is unlikely to help anyone. If it were possible to satisfactorily cover all emergencies in this small space, you wouldn’t need me, or anyone like me. It really is worth attending a First Aid course, especially if you have children. This will give you the confidence to manage minor cuts, grazes, nosebleeds etc and to learn about the principles of initial identification and management of more serious conditions. Out of hospital cardiac arrests have poor outcomes ie. people die, often because no one on scene has attempted CPR. As Emergency medics we are trained to assess and treat serious cases using the ABCD method, starting with problems that are most likely to result in death first if left untreated. A- Is for AIRWAY. Identifying that an airway is compromised is crucial. Inhaled-as opposed to swallowed- bits of lego, food, coins or other foreign bodies can pose an immediate threat to life and prompt action is required. You’ve already done well to stay calm, call 999 and follow the advice given. Sometimes, learning fairly simple manoeuvres - such as Heimlich-may save a life. B- is for BREATHING. Compromised breathing can be related to airway problems or the chest itself, ie infections, trauma or respiratory diseases. Again, identifying that the breathing is compromised and taking timely action is all that can reasonably be expected of the untrained lay-person. C- is for CIRCULATION. Put simply, if blood is not going

whilst neglecting a critically compromised airway. More commonly, cuts, grazes, broken bones, burns and fevers can usually be initially managed by anyone, anywhere. If it’s bleeding, elevate it and apply pressure. If it’s broken, a makeshift splint will help with pain, burns need lots of cold water/ice and covering with clingfilm. Always take pain relief if it hurts.always give pain relief to your kids if they are in pain. Always keep calm and carry on! Happy Summer holidays. Dr Sarah trained in medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.

round and round, and air not going in and out, you have a problem. External bleeding is usually fairly easily identifiable. Simple principles of pressure and elevation can prevent lifethreatening blood loss. You may not be able to turn off the ‘tap’, but you might be able to put in the ‘plug’ and so buy precious time. D-is for DISABILITY. This relates to either neurological problems, fits, strokes, brain haemorrhages and obvious deformities, ie broken/dislocated limbs etc. Learning how to keep someone safe who is fitting and what to do if you suspect a stroke (call 999), is important information everyone can access. This system may seem childishly simplistic, but believe me, in stressful situations, I still say it out loud to help me focus on addressing problems in order. This prevents being unhelpfully distracted by a leg at 90 degrees,
