Dogs Trust may be a national charity, but at Shoreham it has a distinctly local feel. Nicole McCallum, Supporter Relations Officer, talks to Essentially Worthing about herself, the charity and how we can help. I’ve always worked with animals, so when this job became available ten years ago, I was delighted. Like most of the people who work here, I’m dog mad and it’s especially good to have the chance to have dogs as our sole focus. After going on maternity leave to have my second child, I asked Naomi, who was working in the kennels, if she would consider taking over for that period. She did and now we job-share. She’s also a great friend. What makes this job different from other ones is that everyone really cares. The trust is exceptional in that it has a policy of never destroying a healthy dog, so we have to come up with all sorts of ways of either getting the dogs re-homed, fostered or kept in one of our sanctuaries. Naturally, all this takes a lot of time and money, but we are really spoilt here in Shoreham where we get so much help from the local community. For example, the dogs all need to be walked regularly and volunteers do this for us – we even have a waiting list! We also have the shop on Shoreham High Street, which raised £55,000 last year. We’re hoping to make this even better too. I’m currently looking at applications for the roles of manager and assistant manager. Funds are also raised through street collections, a Christmas Fair and the annual Open Day and Fun Dog day that Naomi and I are organising for June 10. We always need goods donated to the shop, high quality items for our raffles and training treats for the dogs. (Tinned hot dogs are the best and we would love to receive them at the centre.) Times are difficult at the moment and unfortunately, the number of dogs needing our help is increasing. Receiving a dog is always sad; however, when a re-homed dog returns to visit, settled and happy, living the kind of life it is supposed to live, there is no better feeling. Big Wildlife Garden Competition Open until Sunday 20 May Gardeners from all over Sussex are being asked to help create a part of the UK’s largest nature reserve with Sussex Wildlife Trust and the Royal Horticultural Society. Registration is now open for the Night To Remember Midnight Walk EW talks to Jo Carden about what motivates her to fund raise for St Barnabas House. When and why did A Night To Remember Midnight Walk start? In 2008 we wanted to hold a large participation event in Worthing which could raise funds and awareness for St Barnabas House. Ladies’ only Midnight Walks were a new concept then and, after researching other hospices’, the St Barnabas House Night to Remember Midnight Walk was born! Do you have a target of how much you want to raise ? If 1200 ladies sign up for Night to Remember and each raise £120 in sponsorship we can raise £150,000 for St Barnabas House – which could fund the cost of a 24 hour stay at the In Patient Unit for over 300 patients. How many people did the walk last year ? Last year almost 1000 ladies walked 13.1 miles for St Barnabas House and raised £120,000! In previous years we’ve had 1200 and we’d love to have another 1200 ladies taking our challenge this year! Are there any changes to the route this year ? Yes! This year we are excited to be offering a shorter 7 mile route for walkers, in addition to our existing 13.1 (half marathon) route. We hope our new 7 mile route will give ladies who might have been apprehensive about the longer route the opportunity to be involved. Both walks will start at midnight from Worthing Leisure Centre. How fit do you need to be to do the walk ? You don’t need to be an Olympian to complete the walk! All you need to do is invest in some good walking shoes and do some training beforehand – now the evenings are lighter it’s the perfect opportunity to get outside walking, and you may find you get fit in the process. Do you need to register to do the walk or can you just turn up? Walkers will need to register in advance and registration closes on Friday 25 May! It’s just £15 to enter, which includes a Fundraising Pack, Night Pack (our exclusive pink t-shirt, torch and medal), refreshments en route and breakfast on return – a bargain! What other events can we look forward to this year ? Hike 4 Hospices is taking place on 18-19 August. We challenge you to walk or cycle routes of between 5 and 42 miles along the South Downs Way. Our annual Light up a Life remembrance service will take place on Monday 10 December this year at the Worthing Assembly Hall. Throughout the year we also have parachute jumps, overseas challenges and running events taking place! Check out the Events Diary on our website www.stbh.org.uk for all the up to date happenings at the hospice! Can you give us an idea of what a working day is like for you? This is a tough one, as my role is so varied that each day is different! A typical working day starts off with catching up with emails and voicemails that have been received I’ll then usually check our registration system for an up-to-date figure of registrations for the events that I work on. At around 10.30am I work on planning my events Currently I’m focussing on our Night to Remember midnight walks. This involves booking and confirming suppliers, planning the marketing and making sure we recruit all of our wonderful walkers, ordering Night to Remember t-shirts goodie bags, and designing the handbag packs to be printed. I’ll have a quick catch up with my colleague, Louise, who is
working with me on this event, to make sure that everything is on track for allocating all 100 of our wonderful volunteers in their roles on the night, and sourcing 1200 bananas and chocolate bars for our walkers to enjoy on the route. I’ll have a quick lunch and catch up with my work colleagues.. I’m very intrigued to find that I have a voicemail from a local Worthing company interested in sponsoring our Night to Remember goodie bags, so I call them back to thank them and discuss this opportunity. At 2 o’clock I have a meeting with the fundraising team to discuss the plans for our annual Light up a Life event in December, and at 4 o’clock I prepare for a cheque presentation in the evening. The cheque is from a local Rotary Club donating funds from a road race they’ve organised and I’m accepting it because I look after our hospice Running Campaigns. At 6 o’clock I head to the presentation and return home at 8 o’clock to have some dinner and relax!
How much money does St Barnabas need to raise each year ? It costs over £4 million each year to provide our specialist care, and only a third of these costs are state funded. Our patients are never charged for their care at St Barnabas, so we depend on the generosity of the public, local organisations and fundraising events. Are the people and businesses of Worthing generous? I am touched by the generosity of our St Barnabas community, from the individual walker who raises £2000 through taking part in Night to Remember, to the local organisations such as Edgars Cool Water, GlaxoSmithKline, Morrisons and Richard John Hair and Beauty for donating items and prizes for our activities. Without them quite simply, St Barnabas House would not exist.
What motivates you to fundraise for St Barnabas House ? Just walking around our new St Barnabas House building and seeing the fantastic care our nurses provide for our patients in the Inpatient Unit and the Day Hospice fills me with pride for working for such a fantastic charity. We all experience loss, but knowing that we are here for people during difficult times for them motivates me to make each event a success.
What more can we do to help support the hospice ? There are a range of ways to support St Barnabas such as volunteering (in either our charity shops or in the hospice itself), taking part in an event such as Night to Remember or a local run, organising your own fundraising activity, playing our weekly Lottery, corporate giving or leaving a gift in a will. Dog friendly and fantastic views Beach Life reviews the Bluebird café at Ferring
Location, location! Situated right on the seafront at Ferring, the Bluebird Café is the perfect ‘watering hole’ for dog walkers, joggers and those out for a stroll on the beach. There has been a café here since the 1930s and during the second World War, the Canadian army used the building for a NAAFI canteen. It has had various name changes, including Martin’s Retreat and The Lemon Tree but has more recently reverted back to its original name. The Blue Bird is accessible by car at the Ferring end only, travelling west from Worthing where the road runs out. But the unspoilt stretch of beach from East Preston to Ferring, going east, makes for a very pleasant walk (although you need to wear stout shoes because of the shingle). This hugely popular café prides itself in the variety of breakfasts it offers between 8am and 11.45am every day of the week, with a traditional all-day breakfast as well. The Breakfast Specials Board displays a long list of options, from basic beans on toast at £2.95 to a Bluebird Special Breakfast at £6.95 consisting of bacon, sausages, beans, mushroom, chips & fried tomato. A vegetarian breakfast is also on offer. If you go at lunchtime, you will find home-made dishes (different every day) and fresh local fish on the menu with senior citizens specials and a kids menu. And they are fully licensed. Those who prefer afternoon tea will also find something to their liking with fresh, home-made scones, a delicious selection of cakes, and a choice of teas. I decided to go for morning coffee and discovered it was the place to go with your dog! I counted no less than 17 dogs with their owners, both inside and out – all very well behaved, I should add. A notice at the counter displayed Doggie Laws. Only one dog per party is allowed inside, although there is no restriction at the tables outside.
The Cafe itself is modern and clean and would certainly not enter the greasy spoon category exuding a bohemian atmosphere with its rough oak tables and old church chairs, the kind that have a slot at the back for books. I have to say my coffee was disappointing in that it wasn’t terribly hot, coming from one of those press-
button machines that delivers a standard cup of whatever you choose. I like my coffee ‘tailor-made’ - weak with plenty of milk so, realising that wouldn’t be possible here, I chose a latte. The Bluebird’s appeal is definitely in its picturesque location, its ‘doggie’ reputation and traditional English grub.

Make a Miniature Garden What you will need: • One shallow plastic container about 3cm deep. (An ice-cream carton is ideal. Just ask Mum or Dad to cut it down to size.) • Green paper cut into strips about 4cm deep. • One circle of shiny paper or foil. • Soil and tiny plants and flowers from the garden. • Tiny stones or shells. • Scissors, sticky tape and coloured paper and pens. Making the garden • First prepare your base by wrapping the green paper around the sides and sticking to the container. There should be a little extra at the top. • Decorate the base or snip the paper at the top into a grass fringe. • Carefully fill with soft soil. • Starting at the back of your garden, add taller plants and flowers to look like trees. As you move forward, add lower plants, but remember to leave space for your pond. • Make a little hollow where you want the pond to be and insert your shiny circle. • Edge the pond with tiny stones or shells. • Fill in the rest of the garden with pretty flowers and plant tips. • I couldn’t resist making some tiny gold fish for the pond. What would you add? • To keep your garden blooming, spray with a little water daily.

In the Garden this May Buds bursting, bulbs blooming, abundant blossom and herbaceous perennials beginning to beautify borders. May is fine month of lush unblemished growth and anticipation. The start of summer. Here are my tips: Plant types: As a rule of thumb any grey coloured plants grow best in sun and will be more drought tolerant. In addition hairy leaves act like a shade device e.g. Stachys lanata (Lambs ears). Aromantic plants give off their scent compound to reduce water loss and fleshy leaves indicate an ability to store water like Cactii e.g. Agave and Aloe vera. Spikes act as fins to cool plants and leathery leaves lose less moisture than soft ones. Finally small leaves have less pores (Olearia hastii) and long narrow leaves like grasses shed heat without water loss (Tamarix).

To combat the effects: Mulch with leaf mould composts, woodchip mulch or gravel to help retain the moisture in the ground and keep the earth cooler. Burying a plastic upturned bottle next to new plant roots aids watering. If on a water meter certain irrigation may be permitted i.e. weepy hose, but it is best to check with the water authority. Gardeners account for two thirds of the water usage in a normal summer, hence the restrictions this year. Grey Water: If using water from bath, shower or sink, it is best not to store it, but use it straight away. Do not use disinfectant water, dishwasher or soft water as the salt content is too high. Normal household soap and detergents are harmless to plants. Finally Water butts are de rigour and to link them use two £1.89 overflow waste fittings from Wickes product code 431930 with a bit of pipe for a neat job. Drill the hole with a 16mm auger bit. Building a garden out of sand

Garden designer Steve White tells us how he created a beautiful garden from a sandpit After 26 years in the business, I still love a challenge and gardens don’t get much more challenging than a disused sandpit. I was approached in 2011 to design and build a sympathetic garden with an array of different plants and textures. This one presented a unique set of problems to be solved, the pure sand banks are 9m high in places and sheer. This makes them dry, lacking in nutrients and predominantly acidic. I suggested that the banks be footed with a retaining wall predominantly using local Chestnut poles, which could be backfilled with a rich loam to enable planting of many different species. The garden centrepiece is a circular seating area, with a natural rockery retaining wall, carefully constructed to follow the contours in which rock naturally occurs. The two golden rules of
good rock-work are to ensure the rock is mostly below the crest of the land and that all the tops are parallel, giving the impression that the soil has been eroded to expose the rock. The ‘Patio’ is large flat pieces of Yorkstone, set among a fine crisp Purbeck gravel, not unlike a Boules surface. All the new planting has a large amount of Farmyard manure dug in around it

Cat’s Whiskers Veterinary Clinic is Worthing’s only veterinary practice exclusively for cats. To celebrate National Pet Month we are having an Open Afternoon on Saturday 5th May from 2 to 4pm in aid of Worthing Cat Welfare Trust, a local charity that care for and find new homes for unwanted and stray cats. They will have some adorable cats looking for new homes at the clinic and a fundraising stall. You will also get to meet our small dedicated team and have a “behind the scenes” tour of the clinic. I get the feeling that summer is finally on the way! OK, the April showers were to be expected, but that nice little burst of warm weather in March is, hopefully, a hint of things to come! I really hope the weather serves us well this year, as this could really be a golden summer to remember. in fact, Splash’s first concert there was actually before the station had even took to the air! Back in 2009, we souped things up a little, and created “The Garden Party”. Over these last three years, the event has become the biggest tribute festival on the south coast, with affordable tickets, and an awesome range of acts. Since 2009, we’ve paid tribute to some of the biggest names the world has ever seen – including U2, ABBA, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Phil Collins, Take That, Girls Aloud, Kylie, The Beatles and Madness. So, what of this year’s Garden Party? Well, I can tell you the date is booked – it’s all taking place on Saturday 21st July. As for this year’s acts...well, at the time of writing, I can only say two
things.... Firstly, be listening to the Richard Reynolds Breakfast show on Wednesday 9th May! Secondly, I can guarantee that this year’s event will be ‘the best of the best’! Seriously, if I said any more right now, I’d be hung, drawn and quartered – so my lips are sealed! Our resident doctor is furious, read on to find out why As a seasoned old timer, the junior doctors often come to discuss their cases with me. I was not surprised then when I was asked for an opinion today about a young man who had taken an overdose. I was stunned, however by what followed. The patient had been seen by the doctor, who had taken a history, examined him and explained the likely course of events. The patient then requested to be seen by another doctor. Why? Had he found the young medic wanting in empathy, lacking knowledge, discretion, professionalism or respect, did he feel more comfortable discussing his problems with a doctor of a particular sex for some reason? As far as staffing allows we do try to accommodate these types of preferences, but A&E is A&E and sometimes it is just not possible .No, this was not the issue. The patient had requested to see an ‘English’ doctor. For what it’s worth, this lad is English. English born, English educated, Oxbridge accent. As English as me. What he really meant to say was he wanted to see a white doctor. What I saw in front of me was a fully-qualified, bright and competent young doctor who is courteous and gentle. I might give them a hard time- like mean mummy, for their own good- but I’m fiercely protective of these hard-working people and I was furious. Furious that he had shown kindness and empathy and had that repaid by prejudice. Furious too that the junior doctor was not. To him, it was matter-of-fact, a common-enough occurrence that he felt no rage, just resignation.
The wonder of the service we work for is that the doors are open to all-comers. We will treat your problem irrespective of what we think of you as an individual. We deserve the same courtesy. The NHS is also massively dependent on workers from elsewhere. Without them, there would not be a National Health Service. Naturally enough, I volunteered to see the gentleman, convinced that although female, I was ‘English’ enough, blonde and very, very pasty white. I had rather hoped that there would be an’ explanation’. That the patient was drunk or on drugs or had taken an overdose of medication that would affect his normal thought processes. Not so. He was just an angry young man who thought
that it was acceptable in a public place and what’s more a healthcare environment to voice his nasty, small-minded and prejudiced opinions out loud. Think what you like in your head, keep your mouth shut in public if your views are offensive to the people trying to help you, and are also against the Law. Somewhat ironically, around his neck was a Rosary. What, I thought, would Jesus have said to that? Dr Sarah trained in medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.
What is a Dermatologist? Dr Minor has worked as an internationally renowned Consultant Dermatologist for over 20 years and has extensive knowledge and experience in all aspects of Dermatology. She has worked for many years in the USA where she gained an international perspective, she now works in Chichester. In this article she discuses in depth about the the profession of dermatology and when would be the appropriate time to visit a dermatologist A Dermatologist is a doctor who specialises in treating the skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes – the lining inside the mouth, nose and eyelids. The skin is the largest organ in the body and does a lot more than keep the insides in. The spectrum of patients seen by Dermatologists is wide and includes all age groups from new born infants to the very elderly. There are more than 2000 skin diseases, but about 20 of these account for 80% of the workload. Inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis and eczema are common and produce a significant impact, both physical and psychological on those affected. Effective treatment can markedly improve quality of life. Incidence of skin cancer has increased dramatically over recent years, particularly along the South Coast. This is partially due to the ageing UK population and partly due to sun exposure and other factors. Detection and treatment of skin cancer is a major part of a Dermatologists job. The first line of defence against skin cancer is prevention, very early detection is crucial to receive the best possible outcome. The best way to find skin cancer at its earliest treatable stage is
by checking your skin regularly and having a Dermatologist perform a full body skin cancer screening, and this is available at Nuffield Hospitals. Dermatologists often pick up skin cancers in patients who are totally unaware of them. Many of us also have various lumps and bumps and moles which are benign (not cancerous) which can be easily removed by a Dermatologist. In this time of increased skin awareness, you don’t have to live with them. However, this is unlikely to be done on the NHS. Recent Government initiatives are having confusing effects, so that people referred on by their GP for expert help may not see a fully trained and accredited Dermatologist – a Consultant Dermatologist is the expert and the best person to treat skin problems.
All dermatologists are medically qualified and after qualifying, spend at least 4 years training in general medicine to gain experience of other medical specialities like emergency medicine, rheumatology and cardiology. After qualifying as members of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) they must spend at least 4 more years as a Specialist Registrar in Dermatology before becoming eligible for a Consultants post. Consultants are accredited, which means they are on the Specialist Register of the GMC (General Medical Council).
