ITV’s Superstar finalist Jon Moses is charming as a prince. Here he gives us a glimpse of his loves offstage and on.
If you had to choose one musical production to appear in, which would it be? It has always been an ambition of mine to play the part of Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. It is fantastic fun with a great story and lyrics. As a singer, you have performed all over the world. Where was your favourite venue? It’s difficult to say. I’ve sung in lots of countries in both intimate venues and grand hotels. I particularly loved a hotel in Portugal where the audience was especially responsive and appreciative. Many of your heroes are from your roots in the North East. Tell us about one who has had a particular influence. My dad. He has been the person to inspire and give me confidence. He’s my biggest fan and my biggest critic. When he saw posters of me in the pantomime, he was really moved and really proud. Everyone adores pantomime. What do you find especially enchanting? I like everything about it – especially how it brings people together. On stage there will be a mix of well-known actors and local children. Panto is the best of theatre – not too serious, filled with action and music - a positive, Christmassy bit of fun! Your first visit to Worthing was for the pantomime press event. What impressed you? Well, it’s a really friendly town. When I went for a walk on the pier, several people stopped to say hello. And The Connaught is gorgeous - beautiful and elegant. Its size means that it is possible to connect with everyone in the room - perfect for pantomime! Jon Moses will be appearing as Prince Valiant in Sleeping Beauty from Friday 7 December to Saturday 5 January at the Connaught Theatre. An EP of a selection of songs from Superstar and more will be available there.

Richard Ambridge has suggestions for a wine that explodes on the palate
Bangers and Malbec November is perhaps when many of us turn our thoughts to Christmas. Sadly the seasonal cards have been in the shops since August ( those of you who didn’t buy them in last January’s sales ) and we are inundated by all the media as to what we really need to buy for this festive season. However it is also a time for children, November 5th is Bonfire Night. Brilliant family displays all over the Worthing and Adur area ,whether large or small abundant ‘whizzes’ and ‘bangs’ from all the fireworks. Its under this tenuous connection I can now enthuse over a wine and food marriage that can delight all of us adults at this time of year - Bangers ( the sausage variety ) and the Malbec grape. This wonderful dark, deep coloured tannic grape is better and originally known as the Cot ( Loire ) or Auxerrois in France, especially in its home regionof Cahors. In Cahors it is famous for producing their ‘great black wines’ but now many of you will recognise it as Argentina’s famous grape. Approximately 160 years ago it was introduced to Argentina by the then famous French viticulturalist Michel Pouget whose task was to evaluate & develop the already burgeoning wine industry in the country. He recommended the Malbec/Cot as a possible ‘star’ for their country and found not only the best sites but also brought the Cot from a French nursery to establish it here. The original stock came from the Malbec Nursery Company and the Argentinians took the grape name from this so as,in part,to differentiate from its French origins. As time has gone by it has developed its own style and now plays such a major part of their wine industry - to the States 60% of exports are Malbec,38% in the UK.Perhaps there is an over reliance on this grape here but they do produce some great wines - either as a single grape variety or in some very accomplished blends. However it is this wonderful food marriage with sausages that it really shows its worth. Here in Worthing we have many great butchers such as Colmers who specialise in ‘home made’ sausages of great variety and quality. This time of year a great winter warmer of a meal of Sausages & Mash and a bottle of your favourite Malbec takes a lot of beating !! We at Grapes in Prospect Place in the town centre sell a great range and will always be happy to advise. Come in and taste our huge stock of wines from around the world. Piccola Italia
W 13
A little bit of Italy in the heart of Worthing That’s the feeling you get when you walk into Piccola Italia, an Italian Deli and store with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Shaun Daniels and Mike Petretta resurrected Piccola Italia in December 2011 and have seen the business grow to the success it now enjoys. The well laid-out shelves display the colour and variety of Italian produce as, over the months, they have gradually increased their variety of stock in response to people’s needs. Mouthwatering hams and cured meats, cheeses and olives are sliced, cut and served to order on the cold counter. “It has been a challenge and a steep learning curve,” says Shaun, “but the return has been incredible and we are humbled by our customers’ loyalty and support.” In a competition ran by Bertolli Olive Spreads and the BBC Good Food Guide for the UK’s favourite Italian Deli, Piccola Italia were voted 5th in the UK by their customers. The certificate proudly displayed in the window bears witness to this. Shaun and Mike’s vision is to be at the hub of the community. The influx of Italians back in the 50s and 60s has greatly influenced our culture and cuisine and they are keen to bring this influence into the heart of Worthing, building a rapport with schools and community centres. In the summer, they sponsored an Italian Festa at the East Worthing Community Centre. This was a successful ticketed event which included a 3-course meal and a DJ playing a mixture of Italian and English folk as well as chart music. They are planning a Christmas Festa at a cost of £5.50 – bring your own bottle! This will consist of a 3-course meal. Run in conjunction with a Facebook Group called Italians in Worthing, Shaun says it is about bringing together the Italians and the English community in the whole of Sussex. You will find Piccola Italia at 32 South Farm Road, just north of the railway crossing.

We asked six Essentially Worthing readers what is it they love about living and working in Worthing. Stephen Melling Museum Assistant, Worthing Museum As we move into November, it is always good to see families in Worthing unite on Remembrance Day, to watch the parade march proudly past the War Memorial in Chapel Road, and remember those who have fallen in past wars. As we are fast approaching the Centenary of World War One, it would be lovely for the Worthing community to come together to mark this very special occasion. Chandler Goddard & Lauren Bromley. Head Boy and Head Girl, Durrington High School The Autumn term signifies a fresh start and is great for sharing new ideas. Year 8’s have settled in and are starting to enjoy the pace of our school life and for us Year 11’s we are working towards our exam goals, whilst contributing towards exciting new initiatives such as our School Blog. It is great to be part of a school community that offers so many opportunities for young people.
Shelley Hirst Managing Director, Green Fish Recruitment Limited Highly Commended Start Up Business 2012 - Southern Business Awards. Worthing offers so much for every generation to do, see and be part of now more than ever. The people are open minded, versatile and community minded; when you stand on the top of Cissbury Ring you can see the sea, the countryside and the hustle and bustle of Worthing. I would not change where I live for the world; Worthing is the place to be!
Steve Berrett, Partner Michael Jones Commercial Property Worthing is a great place to work and play all year around! We have on average two million visitors a year and have many successful businesses such as ETI and Fresh Egg who have grown from small sole traders into major employers within the town. Worthing should be proud of our enthusiastic and pioneering firms as well as welcoming tourists from afar.
Dave Hunt Former Splash FM presenter & owner of DSH Leisure I have always been a big fan of Firework Night which was a great family affair when I was a child. We used to buy our Fireworks loose from Gamleys toyshop in Portland Road and always had a bonfire with a Guy. The fireworks seemed a bit more dangerous than today with a “Jumping Jack” often exploding in through the kitchen door! Nowadays, I enjoy taking our rides to various organised displays in and around Worthing.
David Hinchliffe Manager of Worthing Rugby Club’s 1st XV, The Raiders. The Raiders play in National Division 2 and their third place finish last season placed them as the 43rd best team in the country. Being part of our club is a real pleasure and November signifies the start of ‘real’ rugby weather. Dark nights bring training under floodlights, spectators reach for scarves and gloves, players welcome the softer ground and the trees shed their leaves to give the groundsmen an extra headache. Venture out to watch the game on a crisp chill November afternoon and you’ll soon get the bug!

Co-working spaces As a small business owner, I love working for myself, being my own boss, dictating my own hours and making my own decisions. However, sat in my office, only talking to myself, can be a bit isolating – do you know what I mean? I use social media to keep me in touch with colleagues and with the world outside, but sometimes I do miss the camaraderie that an office can provide. For example, catching up on what you did at the weekend... “did you see X Factor, what about the Million Pound Drop?” Sharing a business problem, shaking off a difficult phone conversation, keeping focussed. Does any of this sound familiar? Sharing office space would be one way to counteract this; loosely called ‘co-working.’ This is an extension of the ‘hot desk’ concept based on the same principle that you do not have a permanent desk, but the work colleagues that you share desks with are from different companies. Wikipedia says: “some co-working spaces were developed by nomadic Internet entrepreneurs seeking an alternative to working in coffeeshops and cafes, or to isolation in independent or home offices.” When I ‘Google’ co-working spaces I see that there

are loads of them ‘popping up’ all over the UK. Indeed Worthing has some ‘pop-ups of its own. But how about something more permanent for Worthing? Would you be interested in having shared space in an office? “John Lewis coming to Worthing soon” Now wouldn’t that be a great headline for our town? John Lewis is combating the recession by opening up smaller-sized stores in affluent towns. This sounds perfect for Worthing. Retailers are always complaining that we do not have big enough shops for their stores, well more compact ones could be the answer. Apparently John Lewis are looking in Crawley but nothing as yet is confirmed. Come to Worthing JL... The problem we have is the sea ofcourse, which reduces our catchment area by half – come on down anyway, we would love it wouldn’t we? Brighton and Hove Albion How exciting to hear that the Albion will hopefully have their training ground at Lancing. Although I am not a huge football fan, I have been to see the Seagulls at the AMEX Stadium and indeed at Withdean and this
positioning of their training centre in West Sussex has got to be a boost for the economy in the area and provide new opportunities for businesses. What opportunities will you be hoping for? We love Worthing and Adur What can we do to attract more visitors to share our lovely beaches, shops and attractions ?
Worthing is buzzing during the Summer, crowds flock to the seafront and onto the South Downs, and business is good for all. But with Autumn now firmly nipping at our heels, we must all promote our town during the winter months and into next Spring. Worthing and Adur have busy town centres, excellent theatres and wonderful cafes, so what can we, as residents, do to help attract more visitors during the colder months? With this in mind, Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce, who support and advise local businesses, have launched a new Tourism and Hospitality group to support and boost promotion of our area. The majority of out of season tourist trade into Worthing and Adur comes from those who are here to visit friends and family and from visiting business people. So, the new Tourism and Hospitality group is suggesting a local campaign, potentially in the form of a Tourism Exhibition, to showcase the locality and actively encourage residents and their visitors to take advantage of all the great amenities and attractions we have on offer. Local businesses will be involved and commit their energy to collectively working together to ensure the project is successful. Many ideas are currently being considered to support the exhibition, from a discount booklet for those visiting the town, to a tourist bus to drive visitors around, and Essentially Worthing, as one of the businesses involved in the new Tourism and Hospitality project, would love to hear readers views. So, if you have any ideas, big or small, that will help to make a positive difference and improve our tourism offering, please do
let us know here at Essentially Worthing and we will be delighted to pass them on and share these ideas in future issues. E. essentiallyworthing@gmail.com Sheryl Tipton, Marketing Consultant www.salesandmarketinguk.com for Worthing & Adur Chamber of Commerce Hospitality and Tourist Group

BabyBuddy is growing up fast!
Diego Harman
Lorraine and Chelsea Harman are working tirelessly to support children and their families living with learning disabilities
With energy and passion, Lorraine and Chelsea Harman’s enthusiasm for their new charity BabyBuddy is infectious, and in a short space of time they have already achieved so much. BabyBuddy began in April 2012 to offer support to families of babies and children under 14 with learning disabilities. This support is vital, as Lorraine found out shortly after her son Diego was born and diagnosed with trisomy 21, or Down’s syndrome as it’s commonly known. Following Diego’s birth, Lorraine turned to the internet for advice and information, and whilst the team at Worthing Hospital were superb she recalls, once at home she felt unsure of what to expect. So, less than a year later, BabyBuddy was formed to reach out to others
ons team Buddy promoti The young Baby
isolated in the same situation. BabyBuddy currently run a drop in session every Tuesday morning at Buddys Cafe, in South Farm Road, for children, parents and carers to be able to come together regularly to chat and support each other. Lorraine and Chelsea also offer home visits to help educate new families about living with children with learning disabilities. Future plans include more extended drop in groups to cover a wider area, funded holidays for children with disabilities and even a fully equipped house where older children and young adults can live their lives in a safe and secure environment. BabyBuddy fundraise tirelessly; 2012 saw a Jubilee Party, a Masked Ball and even a Birdman flight, and continuing with this BabyBuddy are currently

Come fly with me We ask the people that work at Shoreham Airport what motivates them and what makes them proud to be working in the aviation industry. EW puts the questions to Paul Simmons Manager of The Hummingbird We hear The Hummingbird is a brand new restaurant at Shoreham Airport – What’s different to before? It’s been completely refurbished, so everything is new and fits with the Art Deco style of the main terminal building – we even have a beautiful 1930s piano! The name The Hummingbird comes from the first plane ever to have flown out of Shoreham over 100 years ago. Why should people come to the restaurant? There’s a different atmosphere, and our hearty home cooked food is great, whether you fancy fish & chips, lasagne, a sandwich or a burger. We’re open for breakfast too, offering freshly baked pastries or if you’re in the mood for something more substantial a full English! There’s a wonderful view overlooking the runway with the South Downs and Lancing College in the background. We’re open from 8am to 6pm Monday to Sunday, so it’s a great family day out – children always enjoy watching the planes. From the Spring we’ll be open well into the evening. How did you become a restaurant manager? What’s most challenging about it? I began my career as a chef at The Grand in Brighton where I worked for five years, I then managed Truffles in Henfield for six years before coming to Shoreham to open The Hummingbird. The challenge is always getting everything right for your customers – from developing menus to keeping the atmosphere fresh.
Open daily from 9.30 with late opening on Friday and Saturday until 11pm.
Essentially Worthing has been a godsend at the perfect moment when I started out as the Community Development and Fundraising Manager for Camelia Botnar Cahildrens Centre. Essentially Worthing offered Camelia Botnar free publicity due to being a local charity with limited funds, they published an amazing feature about one of our families promoting the excellent provisions our centre offers, has been genuinely appreciated and has shown what we do in the light we deserve to be seen in. My aim is to raise awareness of our charity and the FREE service we offer to the families of our community, who have children with special and additional needs, so the support of Essentially Worthing is paramount to our success.
What’s best about Shoreham Airport? It’s a fantastic place to work. The main terminal building is unique, there’s so much history and not many people can say they work in such an attractive setting.
Thankyou for your support and we look forward to our future partnership working together.
Your proudest moment ? Managing the refurbishment of The Hummingbird – when you walk in it makes you smile.

‘I started going to Bodyshapers in April this year. I signed up for the 12 week Amethyst membership. After only 6 weeks I found I had lost 17½ inches. I do 3 half-hour exercise sessions a week, using the exercise machines that are power assisted. There are different machines, each focussing on a different part of the body and the whole routine takes only 30 minutes out of my day. I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, and the team are very encouraging! I was already dieting when I joined and my main aim was to tone up ready for my forthcoming wedding. But, since I started I found I have lost 30 inches. I have dropped two dress sizes and my wedding dress has been taken in twice. I am so pleased with the result that I have now signed up for the gold membership.

BECCA says: ‘I joined with my mum because I had put on weight over the past year and a half. As we lived in the flats above the gym, we decided to give it a go. We were offered a week’s free trial, but decided to join after only a day! I’ve been going for nearly a year now and have lost 2 stone in weight 47½ inches. It’s all about diet as well as attending the gym. You are given a food log and have to write down everything you eat and drink. The team helps you with your diet and if you lapse, they give you encouragement. I will continue to go because unless you keep up the regular exercise, you put on weight. I’m getting married in just over a year’s time and want to be in the best shape possible!’ Becca has lost 2 stone and 44.5 inches
Katie has lost 30 inches ‘I have been going to Bodyshapers for about one year since I retired from nursing. I wanted to lose weight and to feel good about myself. I had tried dieting myself, but it hadn’t worked, so when I joined, I was very unfit. I used to get breathless walking up a hill and I had painful, arthritic swelling in my knee for which, I was told, I needed surgery. I am also a diabetic and was taking medication three times a day. Bodyshapers have helped me to get fit through exercise and encouraged me to eat and drink the right things. Now I walk everywhere, the swelling in my knee has disappeared and I only take medication for the diabetes once a day. And I enjoy walking into town and I feel good about myself !

Where do I start ?
Paul Cullen answers some of the most commonly asked questions about dentures Q. I want dentures, where do I start ? A. Have a ring round and speak to a few different clinics. Try and meet the clinician and make sure you feel comfortable with them. Dont let them push you into something and ask for free consultations Q. How long will my dentures last? A. It will depend on the quality of teeth used, the quality of your dentures and your health. For example losing weight can make teeth ill fitting. Oral hygiene is important as losing teeth will mean adding to your dentures

Scrapheap Safari
Alan Williams’ metal sculpture animals will be roaming the Worthing Museum garden
Williams has brought the excitement of a safari to Worthing. Spot his wild creatures from a charming chameleon (named Rodney) to an awesome alligator. His creations are all made from scrap metal and recycled materials with his largest work being an enormous rhinoceros built from a skip donated by a Lancing firm. Fortunately, this rhino is not on the endangered list and we have been reassured that all the animals (no matter how fierce in appearance) are friendly. Exhibition runs until 23 February.
This beautiful photograph was taken locally by a very talented Essentially Worthing reader. Paul Pedersen who lives and works in Worthing Would you like your photographs featured on EW Gallery ? email hi res pictures to essentiallyworthing@ gmail.com

‘Tis the season to be planning! I’m at pains to say it, but you have to accept the truth...yep, Christmas isn’t far away! November is upon us, and the smell of turkey is on the horizon! I suppose to a point, we now all have to accept that (at least in the retail industry’s eyes), the countdown to the festive season starts pretty much as soon as the schools go back from their summer holidays! In some ways, a shame – however, in other ways, inevitable! We are starting to make some festive plans here at Splash FM too! In the run up to Christmas, we’re going to have a huge giveaway, where one lucky listener will win every single prize on offer – delivered in time for the big day. The great thing is, to be in with a chance of winning, you won’t even have to answer a single question! More details on that coming soon! The festive season, of course, is a perfect excuse to have a good old fashioned knees-up, and we’re not short of ideas for you! Through December, we’re hosting a series of party nights at the Chatsworth Hotel on the Steinem – to find out more go to www. chatsworthworthing.co.uk There is also something else rather splendid that we are getting organised right now! You may well already be aware of “Rik Scott’s School Reunion”, which is on the radio every Saturday from 6pm. If you’ve heard it1 before (shame 12:00 on you!), it’s six hours 90mm never x 134mm.pdf 12/08/2010

of perfect Saturday night music – crammed full of songs that will instantly transport you back to the days of gum under the desk, and having to write “I will not talk in class” fifty times! Well, this festive season, we’re taking the School Reunion out and about, and hosting a special Christmas Party at the Assembly Hall on Saturday 22nd December. Rik Scott will be there with all your favourite school disco tunes, plus there’ll be a live performance from “The Wild Boys”, a great six-piece band covering all the great artists from the best decade in music. The 80s!

It’d be great if you get into the spirit of the evening, and dig out your school uniform too! Tickets for this amazing event are just £10 – so book your tickets early for what will be a fun and fantastic way to celebrate! To find out more, just keep listening to Splash FM or go to www.splashfm.com

Dr Sarah has the last word
Our resident doctor is asking us all to speak out and protect our children Who can say they were truly surprised when the Jimmy Savile scandal broke? It felt like the conscious and subconscious had finally had a conversation. A great big penny dropped with a massive clang. Looking back at the footage through adult eyes it’s alarmingly obvious, even tauntingly so. I was a child in the 70s and saw only with a child’s eyes, feeling nothing more than a vague unacknowledged discomfiture. But actually it was pretty explicit wasn’t it? It certainly seems to have been one of showbiz’s worst kept and dirtiest of secrets. The question now will be, why was it allowed to go unchecked for so long when so many people clearly had more than suspicions? There must be people today feeling very uncomfortable indeed about their involvement in acts of either comission or omission. So how do we protect children and other vulnerable groups from abuse? We start first by acknowledging that the unthinkable happens, however abhorent and that no-one is above suspicion. Child protection issues in hospital have become more prominent in recent years, particularly following high profile cases of such severe and sustained abuse that it resulted in the deaths of children like Victoria Climbie and ‘baby P’. What emerges each time is ‘multi-agency failures’. This means that individual professionals from a range of organisations who came into contact with children and families did not share their concerns. The pieces of the jigsaw puzzle did not come together until it was too late. When bad things happen, individuals and organisations- including ‘society’- have failed. Failed by turning away, ignoring or failing to see or to report abuse. Acts of omission are just as serious as acts of comission.
Rethink your life ....Take Control and Manage Anxiety and Phobias November is a mixed bag, like a winter mixture of sweets! Halloween and fireworks have finished and It is now time to start planning your Christmas break with or without friends and family These are all often times of high anxiety. Anti anxiety medication has reached a 1 in 7 prescription level in the UK. Many suffer in silence, you can ask for help. So many people suffer horrendously from phobias, anxiety disorders & panic attacks.
It can seem hard to steer a middle course between vigilence and paranoia, mindfulness and hysteria. Yet we all know right from wrong. Applying suncream to the parts of a dressed child in your care -ie face, arms, lower legs is fine. Comforting a child who is upset or injured is also fine. Speaking out and taking a stand requires courage. What if you are wrong? What if the putative perpetrator is in a position of power or authority? What if you are embarassed or ridiculed? But what if you don’t speak out? What if you choose not to ‘get involved’? What if your silence facilitates more unendurable horrors? Can you live with that? We face these dilemmas every day in A&E, especially with children. For each presentation with illness or accident we have to ask, is this account credible? were the actions taken reasonable? what
‘vibe’ are we getting from parents or guardians. It’s sometimes a tricky judgement call. Sometimes something just doesn’t feel right. When all is said and done and when, in this case all the dirty laundry has been washed and hung out to dry, we will perhaps reassure ourselves that that was then and this is now. We will imagine that it couldn’t happen again because we have learned. But it keeps happening again and again, and the only thing that will stop it is our ALL taking notice of what goes on around us and doing something about it however uncomfortable it makes us feel. Dr Sarah trained in medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.
Learn to breathe. The diaphragm is like a set of bellows, use it to breathe instead of just the tops of the lungs. Slow, long, deep breaths. Press into your solar plexus, between your ribs at the front. It hurts to (not too hard you’ll be sick) then put your fingers over that sore spot & expand as you breathe in, not out! You’ll make some odd shapes at first. It’s easier lying down too. When anxious, breathe for 15 minutes & see how you are. Buy some time. Acceptance: This is a huge one! The brain when anxious & scared releases chemicals. They make us edgy, ready to run and aren’t good for us. To say I’m ok being anxious, it’s ok for me to be scared is paramount. Use permission. Accept fear, accept fear every day and that allows that part of the brain to calm & YOU to regain control. We will happily buy a coffee, an energy drink or eat sugar for energy. Your fear is also an opportunity. It gives you that shot of adrenalin, simply ask how can I use this for me instead of against?
To work with someone and hear that they managed a shop, coped with going out or could talk to a stranger is amazing. They discover they DO have a choice!
