Keeping Your Carpets Clean On The Holidays If there is one thing that happens with the holidays, it’s the mess of hosting the family at your house. Of course, you love spending time with them and having everyone over, but you can’t help but cringe when you see a drop of red wine or some cranberry sauce drop on the carpet. However, there the important thing to do is remain calm and clean it with patience – if you rush the process, which isn’t too long, you can change the texture of the carpet fibers and even turn it into a permanent stain. So, here are some quick cleaning steps for the holidays since at least one spill is guaranteed,
First, there are a few things you do NOT want to do…
Don’t drown the stain with cleaning products. Don’t rub the stain otherwise you’ll just damage the carpet fibers. If the mess is dry, don’t wet the cloth to clean it, vacuum first.
Secondly, here are the things you DO want to do…
First, you want to clean up as much of the stain residue as possible. If it’s dry then vacuum, but if it’s thicker, use something to scoop it off the carpet (scoop, NOT scrape). If the stain is pure liquid, blot it with a dry cloth. Then, take that wet cloth or rag and dampen it with cold water. After you get the cloth wet, you want to blot the stain (this won’t take the stain out, but it will collect more debris). Once the stain is saturated, you want to blot it dry. ALWAYS blot, never wipe. The next step is crucial to remove the stain. You want to make a mixture of clear dishwashing soap and lukewarm water. Dip the rag in the solution you mixed together and begin to wipe the stain inward, towards the middle of the spot. Lastly, dampen the cloth again with plain, cold water and blot the area to remove the soap. After that, you just want to blot it dry.
