UNSUNG HEROES OF THE HOLOCAUST (READ THEIR STORIES HERE) While many people were being murdered at the hands of the Nazi’s, there were many unsung heroes that survived the horrid prisons that were Nazi concentration camps and did what they could to shut them down.
A majority of those inside the concentration camps were forced in against their will, but there is a small group of the unsung heroes that entered at their own risk in the hopes of making it out alive and serving as a living testament to the unbelievable torture that occurred behind the walls.
Denis Avey
Avey’s official military portrait. During WWII, Avey joined the British Army in hopes of salvaging what was left in the destructive trail of Nazi Germany. While battling in Libya, Avey was captured, but escaped before taken to a concentration camp by heading to Greece via the Mediterranean Sea by packing crate. However,
once he hit land, he was recaptured by German’s and taken prisoner. During his time as a POW [prisoner of war] in a camp located near Auschwitz, he managed to become friends with a Jewish prisoner who was a subject of Auschwitz III. During their friendship, Avey managed to trade their uniforms twice in order to gain information on the German’s treatment of inmates.
His testimony never made it to trial as his commanding officer saw his experiences differently. Therefore, during the Nuremburg Trials, when the prosecutor’s sought his infamous testimony, there were claims that they were unable to trace him. Avey was decorated with the award of “British Hero of the Holocaust,” and wrote a memoir of his experiences after being told to keep silent on what he saw.
