DIRECTOR’S INTRODUCTION
In a time of increasing factionalism and entrenchment, a time of warfare so routine that our airstrikes are barely reported anymore, a time in which there is no credible parliamentary opposition to our rulers in either Westminster or Holyrood, a time in which the right holds ordinary citizens to account for the actions of banks, whilst the left chases its tale in a quagmire of identity politics – at such a time it is necessary, vital even to look to forms of cultural expression that have the potential to shake us out of quotidian rhythms. Short film is in essence no more or less radical than any other art form. Yet at its most interesting it has an immediacy and a categorical fuzziness which, wedded to the communal experience of cinema viewing, offers a glimpse of new ways of thinking. Nick Zedd knew this thirty years ago when he penned his semi-serious, semi-comic, semi-self-mythologising Cinema of Transgression manifesto (see page 47). Intended to define a movement in much the same way as Lars von Trier’s equally self-knowing Dogme manifesto ten years later, the Cinema of Transgression manifesto gave common purpose to disparate filmmakers making highly individual work in opposition to the normative outlook of mainstream cinema. Thirty years on Zedd’s strategy of social upheaval through extreme confrontation arguably appears juvenile and self-defeating. And yet, against a backdrop of absurd moves towards legislating for the right not to be offended, maybe there’s something in the suggestion that “any film which doesn’t shock isn’t worth looking at”. We don’t promise that every film in this year’s programme will shock. But we hope that every film represents short film at its most exciting – formally challenging, pugnacious, questioning, boundary-devouring, rough-edged and above all open-ended. DELEGATE INFORMATION Delegate accreditation to GSFF16 is open to industry professionals, filmmakers and film students. Accreditation costs £60 full price, £45 for students. For more information or to apply for accreditation, please go to www.glasgowfilm.org/gsff. The GSFF Guest Desk is situated in the CCA foyer, and is open from 12.00 until 21.00 on Wednesday 16 March and from 10.00 until 22.00 for the rest of the festival. Guests and delegates are welcome to attend any public screening or event, subject to availability. Collect tickets from the Guest Desk on the day of the screening. Please note that there is a limited guest allocation for each screening, and any unclaimed tickets will be returned to the box office for public sales one hour before the screening. After this time delegates may be obliged to buy a public ticket. There are several delegate-only screenings of international and Scottish competition programmes – see Calendar (pages 8 – 9). No ticket required, just show your pass for entry. For entry to Brutal Measures on Saturday 19 March at The Glue Factory, just show your pass on the door. No ticket required.

SCOTTISH AND INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS
Themes of intoxication, infatuation, dissent and protest run throughout this year’s International Competition, which features thirty-four works from twenty countries. Alternative societies are forged in the face of oppression, individuals struggle to retain a sense of self, or conversely to free themselves of their identity in order to embrace a fleeting vision of what they could be. Several familiar faces from previous editions return. We welcome new films from Patrick Buhr, Mark Chapman, Tom Chick, Mike Hoolboom, Kaveh Nabatian, Jennifer Reeder and Joern Utkilen. As opposed to last year’s US-heavy edition, this year’s selection is predominantly European, but also includes work from India, Iraq, Iran, Argentina, the USA and above all Canada. This has been an exceptional year for cinema from Germany, Switzerland and Austria, all of which are represented heavily. In particular, we’re thrilled to present the International Premiere of Sebastian Brameshuber’s In, Over & Out, a deceptively simple piece of work that somehow contains the entire history of cinema in its ten minute duration. The Scottish Competition consists of twenty-six titles, including nine World Premieres. There is a melancholic strain running through the selection, as films return repeatedly to themes of loss, death and pain. But as one would expect from Scottish filmmakers, often these themes are handled with wicked dark humour, none more so than in Last Exit to Ricklesburgh. Strictly speaking not a short film, rather the opening episode of an on-going web series, but we were laughing so hard we weren’t going to quibble. di^pdlt=peloq=cfij=cbpqfs^i=OMNS
Filmmakers featured in the selection range from the very well established – Mark Cousins, multi-award-winning animator Ainslie Henderson – to the unknown. The student work featured is particularly impressive, including several Edinburgh College of Art undergraduate animations, films from University of the West of Scotland and an extraordinary documentary covering the refugee crisis unfolding in Calais from Screen Academy Scotland’s Frederik Subei. And we welcome back last year’s award winner Duncan Cowles, this time collaborating with animator Ross Hogg on an exploration of dementia that recalls the work of Don Hertzfeldt in its visualisation of mental incapacity. Twenty-one female directors and co-directors feature across the two competitions, curiously the same number as last year. As the number of films in competition has gone down by ten, the proportion is slightly better. But it’s still not enough. As ever, we’re careful to ensure that all submitted films are viewed ‘blind’ and that our selection panel and juries have gender diversity. But we must be more proactive in seeking out female filmmakers in future, just as we need to actively reach out beyond our comfort zones of Europe and North America in order to truly represent the most exciting developments in international cinema. None of which is intended to undermine this year’s selection! We never use the word ‘best’ but these films excite us, have kept us talking, and – we believe – represent the most dynamic range of new cinema at home and internationally. We’re looking forward to hearing your responses to them. NR
SCOTTISH COMPETITION JURY ROSIE CRERAR Rosie Crerar’s work across development and production includes the UKFC / Digicult Scottish shorts initiative, Scottish features Tomorrow is Always Too Long, Lore, Shell and Skeletons, and award-winning shorts Pulse, Paris / Sexy, Nocturn and Tumult, as well TV comedy drama and commercials. She was the co-founding director of Glasgow Short Film Festival; Programme Manager of Australia’s Flickerfest Short Film Festival, and Acting Programme Manager of BFI London Film Festival & BFI Flare. Rosie is currently a Screen Officer at Creative Scotland where she works across film development, production, exhibition & distribution. She is also the Screen team’s lead on Screen Equalities, Diversity & Inclusion. JASON RYLE Jason Ryle is the Executive Director at the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, the world’s largest showcase of Indigenous-made screen content, based in Toronto. Jason oversees all aspects of the organization including programming, operations, finance, and the annual Festival. He sits on the Board of Directors for Vtape, an independent video distributor, and is a script reader for The Harold Greenberg Fund, which provides financial aid to Canadian filmmakers. As an award-winning writer, Jason has written for the Smithsonian Institution and numerous publications throughout North America. He made his first short film in 2005 and is currently producing two animated shorts. STINE WANGLER Stine Wangler is a sales agent for short films, working in the KurzFilmAgentur Hamburg. KurzFilmAgentur Hamburg is devoted to promoting and improving the public awareness of short films through operating a theatrical distribution service, negotiating worldwide licensing rights, and more. Stine’s education includes Cultural Studies, Film Studies and Media Communication in Germany and United Kingdom.

She produced commercials for over 20 years and many award-winning short and art films, most notably her collaborations with Jane and Louise Wilson and with Daniel Mulloy, Douglas Hart’s Long Distance Information with Peter Mullan, Bombay Sapphire’s Room 8, and Gaëlle Denis’s Crocodile. With his short film Shipwreck, Morgan Knibbe won more than 20 awards, including two Oscar qualifiers, the Bill Douglas Award at GSFF15, the Silver Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival and a nomination for a European Film Award. His debut feature film Those Who Feel the Fire Burning was the Dutch submission to the Academy Awards for the category of Documentary Feature. Nominated at IDFA for best documentary feature, it also won the prize for best doc in Guanajuato and received very positive reviews: “Mesmerizing” (LA Times), “An unusual, visceral perspective” (NY Times). Morgan was Director of Photography for both Those Who Feel the Fire Burning and Shipwreck. JASON RYLE Jason Ryle is the Executive Director at the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, the world’s largest showcase of Indigenous-made screen content, based in Toronto. Jason oversees all aspects of the organization including programming, operations, finance, and the annual Festival. He sits on the Board of Directors for Vtape, an independent video distributor, and is a script reader for The Harold Greenberg Fund, which provides financial aid to Canadian filmmakers. As an award-winning writer, Jason has written for the Smithsonian Institution and numerous publications throughout North America. He made his first short film in 2005 and is currently producing two animated shorts.

GSFF16 OPENING EVENT: LOST TREASURE
Inspired by the work of the Dawn Cine Group, a 1950s Glasgow-based socialist filmmaking collective, Glasgow Short Film Festival has commissioned musicians Drew Wright (Wounded Knee) and Hamish Brown to compose and perform a new piece of music on overlapping themes of abandoned projects and rural depopulation. They have collaborated with filmmaker Minttu Mäntynen to breathe new life into footage shot sixty years ago for a film that never was. In 1956 the Dawn Cine Group embarked on their most ambitious project, Lost Treasure. A hugely ambitious and well-researched project, the twelve-page script told the story of the Highlands, particularly the draining of its human resources, and explained why that mattered for Scotland as a whole. Although forty minutes of footage were shot in July 1956, the filmmakers over-reached their resources and the film was never finished. Drew, Hamish and Minttu have devised an audio-visual performance that responds to the film and goes some way towards completing the story it tells. The abandoned film is in itself an apt metaphor for the Scottish Highlands, much of it either neglected or exploited by absentee landlords, and its people, so many of whom have been forced off the land in one way or another. Transit is a nomadic programme of artists’ film, screened from the back of a van. For its third episode, the roving screen presents a selection of moving image work by Dorine Aguerre, Miles Joseph, Lucie Rachel, Jane Topping, and Josie Rae Turnbull. The screening event will be accompanied by a limited edition free publication. With narrative film the dominant aesthetic, these artists choose a more transgressive approach: bending, rearranging, and rewriting the record. Momentarily, the screen becomes a palimpsest of ideas and images, stories overlaid and erased. After two unfinished courses of mathematics and mechanical engineering he took up studies in film and television directing at the Konrad Wolf College of Film and Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg in 2008. He graduated in 2014 with Der Unfertige (The Incomplete), which premiered at Rome Film Festival where it won the prize for Best Short Film. Jan contacts potential subjects through specialist Internet forums. With curiosity but without judgement he bears witness to the sexual practices of his subjects. He bonds naturally with his protagonists and has a collaborative approach to defining the story they wish to tell. In Ein Wochenende in Deutschland (A Weekend in Germany), for example, Jan not only shows the protagonists inside their sexual habitat but introduces a more complete picture of the elderly gay couple. He narrows his focus to the core of his protagonists’ world, allowing the viewer plenty of space for thought. The setting is reduced and unspectacular. This rawness creates an intense experience for the viewer; like Jan, we are direct observers, forced to watch. By avoiding any moral judgement or analysis of his protagonists’ behaviour, Jan provides an introduction to different sexual worlds RQ
in which the only limits are those formed by the prejudices and experiences of the viewing audience. His thesis is simple and consistent: beneath the surface of sexuality lies the need for love, the search for recognition but also power, control and self-fulfilment. John Canciani Topics like power, safety and control are getting clearer over the years in my work. In my films I am not interested in sexuality itself nor breaking taboos. I focus on the relations between a person and his body. I document their passion and I give their needs a space without judgement. The viewer can feel the protagonists with this practice. I believe that my way of documentary filmmaking is always an abstract form for each of my protagonists. The form of the film and the documentary method are showing in a way the emotional and psychological structure of what is shown. To be a slave in modern society, like the protagonist of Der Unfertige, is very similar to being a documentarian. BLACK & LIGHT The curtain rises and the lights go out in the cinema. Audience whispers gradually subside as we wait for the illumination of the silver screen and the beginning of a story to come with the light. But what happens when the screen stays dark and the blackness of the auditorium is extended into the film itself? It’s a twilight state between waking and dreaming, this sensibility that we gain when things, thoughts and shapes gain heightened contrasts after an all-nighter. The cinema appropriated it long ago for its machinery of illusion. After all, the cinema has always been a dark place in every sense of the word, into which no decent young lady would venture without a chaperone. As the film theorist Siegfried Kracauer wrote in 1928, it is a dark room in which every little shop girl could dream of glamorous palaces and make-up rooms without being watched or judged. This freedom to dream of obscure worlds led to the police of imperial Germany imposing rules of conduct for the darkness of the film theatres. The magic of darkness and twilight has its place in all films, whatever the genre. You’d be hard pressed to find a Western without a decisive dawn. Just think of the epic films of John Ford in which anxious cowboys whisper to one another that Indians never attack at night because they have no shadow then. Film always tends to conflate its myths of the Other, the unknown, with the iconography of opaque darkness. There is hardly a melodrama without a night in which the love of a lifetime dissolves into brittle alienation. Every hero worth his salt has to face special trials in the darkness, and every fear can grow to monstrous size in the blackness of the night. In the velvet darkness criminals, vampires and lunatics come crawling out of the hiding places that keep them safe from the lucid daylight, the day worker’s righteousness and the precision of visual examination. After literature and theatre, only the cinema seems able to transfigure these nocturnal creatures into myths once again, since it is a creature of the night itself. It is a sandman, throwing pictures into the eyes of the audience in darkened halls. At night, at the zero point of Cartesian doubt, when the nine-to-five workers are asleep and only thrill seekers, the homeless and the doubtful ones venture forth, thoughts on the world take on a different shape. This is one reason why auteur films discovered the cinematic night and turned the blackness into their notebooks. Science fiction too gains its special grandeur from the confrontation with darkness. In comparison to the great empty darkness of space, tiny humans with their ridiculous umbilical cords connecting them to their mother ships look like mere insects under the microscope of a monumental researcher. The blackness and the endless night is always a place of God as well. It’s the place of a metaphysical system that regards all human rationalist campaigns of conquest with the face of infinity and the vast universe. Black & Light compiles films that oscillate between chiaroscuro and pitch black. We follow unknown people into the undergrowth (Sorcière japonaise) and travel through charged expectations (Darkroom) into the blackness of night, where belief in miracles can nestle next to trauma. The substantiation of fear as well as previsions and designs for the future can all be found in the darkness of these films. We visit lightless places of neglect and epiphany. Our eyes nibble their way through poorly lit found footage material, stumble through film tears (Rod Gröth), fumble for shapes in the growing darkness and lose themselves in the pure imagination of unexposed black film (Black). A horror film is torn into black and white, making Barbara Hershey scream in front of her own mirror image (Outer Space), pilgrims go on a quest for miracles (Paradise Drift) and the creature-like nature of the sleeper (At Night) is shown. From the subtitles of Anouk de Clerqc’s ode to darkness Black: “...for me, black does not have anything to do with unpleasant gloom. On the contrary, it is related to a concentrated form of living. With essence and substance. Immense like light. Intimate like the pupil of an eye. What is exactly that we are looking at when we are looking at a black image?” In the darkness, both audience and film itself fall back on themselves, and the cinema reflects on its creations, its material of light and shadows and the horror or the enjoyment of thoughts below the surface. In the mountains of BosniaHerzegovina, thousands of people climb a rocky slope at night. They look up to the sky, expectantly, with strange white eyes. What are they looking for? Is the aeroplane an omen? This wordless film is about man's quest for higher things and the interchangeability of miracles.
Black is a two-fold operation: it foregrounds black as a core component of the visual. At the same time, the film is a tribute to black, or rather to darkness. It is not so much about the colour but about the event: the instant of darkness as it occurs in cinema spaces. The instant in which the screen and the room fold into one indistinct space.

An epical film that gets interrupted in multiple ways, about a man who is kept from doing what a man has got to do. Trying to position this man as the cinema legend he is supposed to be becomes almost impossible. Rod Gröth experimented as early as 1980 in a very nice (and perplexing) way with Dolby Surround. The audience was baffled.

Chris Cunningham’s masterfully gloomy video to one of the last songs by Gil Scott-Heron takes the viewer into the underworld of the New York subway. The environment is only recognisable through dim flashes from the dark, seemingly endless subway platforms race by and above all hovers almost prophetically ghost-like the master of spoken word-soul Gil Scott-Heron. The official instruction to the projectionist is: “Set the projector to as dark as possible.”

THE SUM OF ALL FEARS
A common conception about a good short film is that it has boiled down its story to its essence. In the case of these nine minute condensed versions of classic horror feature films it certainly holds true. These films are so called abridgements of Universal horror classics. Through the wider availability of television, classic Hollywood movies came back into fashion in the early 1960s and the struggling distribution company Castle Films was quick to catch on. Over the next two decades Castle produced a multitude of shortened features for domestic projection. Most popular were the horror films. Not many people could afford to buy the full version, but with the abridgements, one could cheaply build up a personal collection on 8mm or 16mm. In the 1980s home video came along and Castle Films’ days were numbered. No mere footnote in film history, these films demonstrate skillful storytelling in several layers, and you have to be impressed by the abilities of the unknown, uncredited editors. In some cases the condensed version improves on the original, by sheer immediacy if nothing else. In others, the restructuring creates staggering effects. Take The Mummy for instance. The film opens with a dreamy flashback that sets the tone for the whole piece. It plays up the love theme, but also clarifies the original’s shared sensibilities with the surrealists. Boris Karloff meets Maya Deren in ways that were never allowed in the feature version. Frenzy sees Castle Films on its last legs, but the distributor goes out with a bang not a whimper. The abridgement invents a new pre-credit sequence and takes interesting liberties with the material, all the while keeping the plot on track and somewhat intelligible. That’s no mean feat. The films are screened in stuttering and fluttering 16mm, with faded images sometimes turning red from causes other than blood. It’s the way they should be seen now. Do it, before it’s too late! Boris Karloff re-awakens John Carradineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dracula, who in turn sets off on a spectacular horse carriage ride that has the intensity of a modern car chase scene. The transformation scenes are also a sight.

For Scotland’s Festival of Architecture 2016, the Glasgow Institute of Architects has commissioned filmmaker Chris Leslie to create a new short film. (Re)Imagining Glasgow looks at Glasgow’s regeneration over the past forty years and the pledges made by the Corporation of the City of Glasgow. The film playfully reworks Oscar Marzaroli’s 1970 film Glasgow 1980 and uses previously unseen footage shot by Marzaroli for an uncompleted follow-up film, Glasgow’s Progress, alongside new footage of Glasgow today. It shows how Glasgow has been torn down, reimagined and transformed, and questions the city’s seemingly never ending urban renewal. ANGER LIKE FIRE
Nina Simone famously wrote Mississippi Goddam in under an hour, as a response to the horrific murder of four girls in September 1963 at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. The song bristles with rage; it transformed both Simone’s own political identity and the US civil rights movement. Taking its title from Maya Angelou’s belief in the cleansing power of rage, Anger Like Fire considers fury as creative inspiration, and asks whether film can be as effective a channel of rage as more immediate forms of expression. Does the process of creating a film transform simmering anger into reflection or melancholy? Can that raw emotion be authentically caught on screen or does it get overwhelmed by aesthetics? The programme opens with Ken Jacob’s Perfect Film. Consisting of untreated found footage – newsreel interviews with eye-witnesses to the assassination of Malcolm X – the film ostensibly captures the feelings of those who were there, unmediated by the filmmaking process. And yet, already we see a man almost unconsciously refine and reemphasize his account as he is asked to repeat it. Santiago Alvarez’s Now! could be considered a cinematic companion to Mississippi Goddam, as Lena Horne sings furiously over fast-edited found footage scenes of racial conflagration. This approach finds a modern counterpart in the work of Jean-Gabriel Périot. The Barbarians assaults the viewer with scores of photographs of unified groups – politicians, soldiers, workers, families – before disrupting the pattern with images of protest. And yet these direct polemical references to acts of dissent can seem paradoxically calculated and aestheticized, and therefore removed from the reality they portray. Mark Cousins’ Your Eyes Flashing Solemnly With Hate and Yosep Anggi Noen’s A Lady Caddy Who Never Saw a Hole in One both take a poetic, considered approach, to portray murderous anger resulting from contradictions of class and sexuality. Using mostly photographs clipped from American magazines such as Life, Álvarez creates a dynamic montage of images in juxtaposition with the lyrics of Now! sung by Lena Horne to the tune of the Jewish folksong Hava Nagila. The resulting film is a remarkable precursor to the music video format, twenty years ahead of its time. Indeed, in presenting a vivid critique of racism in the USA and as a call for action, Now! stands as a model of the form, far superior to most self-aggrandising music videos. BLEEDING EDGE: FILMMAKING AND THE VIRTUAL WORLD
Digital technologies and information have infiltrated every aspect of our lives. There is no escaping the on-going digital doom debate and its concerns about the way we are being conditioned by applications and images, about whether we sacrifice our ‘natural’ social lives for ‘artificial’ communications, about the mainstream user’s supposed obliviousness to their dependency on technologies and their subsequent loss of privacy. Are we in control of our own actions, media consumption and presence within the digital sphere? Bleeding Edge considers how the digital age has also pervaded cinema, both in terms of form and content. The works in this programme attempt to negotiate the multi-platform non-linearity of digital and online technologies through the linearity of the film medium, yet all with a different focus – some political, some social, some entirely concerned with digital imagery. The diverging implicit judgments within these films offer us a grey space between the black and white terms in which we often consider the digital age. All That is Solid offers a pointed critique on our Western relation to technology through documentation of digital waste grounds and metal mining in Ghana, whereas the desktop fiction narrative of Noah explores the lack of nuance of social media, and its impact on young people growing up today. RIP Geocities takes us on a nostalgic trip through the familiar early visualisations of the Internet in Hollywood cinema, while the seemingly light-hearted Disconnector plays on our conditioning by digital media and its overwhelming consumerism. In Howto, a software tutorial turns uncanny as the programme takes on a life of its own, balancing between humorous and sinister. A similar balance can be found in the entirely drone-recorded Drone Aviary as well as in MakeUp Tutorial: How To Hide From Cameras, both of which raise red flags about the increasing surveillance and lack of privacy in our societies. On the other hand, Webcam Venus proposes that we step away from the presumption that the digital age is reason only for concern for our human nature, through an unusual but optimistic look at sexcam workers and performers. Bleeding Edge is named after Thomas Pynchon’s 2013 dotcom novel, referring to highly advanced, brand new technologies that imply a certain risk for users, but also hold a wealth of new opportunities. This year’s retrospective guest, German filmmaker Jan Soldat, makes documentary portraits capturing the sexual practices of his subjects interspersed with moments of casual intimacy and domestic banality. Join Scottish Documentary Institute’s Flore Cosquer for an in depth conversation with Jan, as he discusses how he finds and approaches his subjects, and how he forms the bond of trust that allows him privileged access to their most private and intimate lives. I don’t see [the world of my subjects] as another world different from mine or yours or anyone else’s. I see my subjects living in the same society I do. They practice other things I don’t, and maybe things I do in my life are not that extreme, but it’s just a different layer to an existence. I’m interested because I don’t know about something… It’s incredible to see someone like Klaus, the slave [subject of Der Unfertige], looking straight into the camera and saying yes, I am different or society says I’m different, but I like myself and I find myself beautiful. The workshop will introduce artists to the methodologies of film production; explore forms of research and development; and advise them on how to effectively pitch moving image projects to funders, partners and financiers.
