MVP RICHARD4481 takes a look at Zipper Interactive’s latest title... Unit 13 is Zipper Interactive’s latest title on a PlayStation console. They have a long-standing association with the PlayStation platforms, bringing us the likes of the SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs brand on the PS2, SOCOM Fireteam Bravo titles on PSP and more recently the likes of MAG and SOCOM 4 on the PS3. So let’s take a look at their latest venture, Unit 13, which is released on the recently-launched PS Vita. Unit 13, like most of Zipper’s recent output, is a tactical third-person shooter. The mission modes vary from covert missions to direct action, deadline to elite. Each mission mission also has a ‘Dynamic mode’, which has random difficulty, random insertions and objectives, though these dynamic missions do not earn you stars or have a leaderboard rating. From the off you’ll notice the whole experience is very dependent on the touch screen, which works flawlessly, from navigating the menu
screens to using touch in-game. I had no issue with button lag or any other flaws of this nature. Each time you start a mission you can select a different operative from the likes of Commando, Technician, Pointman, Gunner, Infiltrator and Marksman. Each operative can be ranked up to level ten, increasing their abilities. This also includes unlocking weapons, some of which can be used across the whole team of operatives. Every mission also has leaderboards on which you can compare yourself against your friends’ scores, Near, Region and Global rankings. This adds to the game’s longevity with a lot of entertainment to be had going back over missions, trying to improve scores to beat my friends and also get more performance stars, which are required to unlock ‘High Value Targets’. In-game controls such as snap to cover work wonderfully well with no real issues of getting stuck to objects; lean and peek also works a treat as you would expect from a great developer such as Zipper.

CHOOSE OPERATIVE ...from the likes of Commando, Technician, Pointman, Gunner, Infiltrator and Marksman. Let’s get onto the Gold stars: these are awarded to you when you achieve certain goal requirements of the level. These gold stars allow you to play locked ‘High Value Target’ missions, so collecting the maximum possible amount for your mission is a must and this adds substantially to the replayability. Ranking up your operatives is important to achieve the extra bonuses that you’ll need to improve on your final score.

Fortunately it’s a great title, setting a very high standard for other games to follow! This is a day one purchase for any fan of Zipper, shooters and overall awesome challenging games!
Sadly my review copy did not come with a online pass so I was unable to review the co-op part of Unit 13 but judging by the single player I can only guess it will make the game more fun. Last but not least is the ‘Daily Challenge’. Each day, a new challenge is presented, which lets you battle it out with everyone across the globe to become the daily champion! It’s a great addition to the game as every day you get a fresh new challenge. OK, the Vita is hardly inundated with shooters at the moment, so Unit 13 is your only choice.

You control Ryu Hayabusa in this hardcore ninja stealth-em-up, seeking to avenge the slaughter of his clan’s shrine maiden. Classic Ninja Gaiden action ensues, and features silent kills and ninja skills, and there’s even an easy mode for more casual gamers.
In the eternal battle between suburban householder and undead menace, only the garden centre’s finest crop can stand in the way of your zombification. This brilliant twist on the Tower Defence genre is addictive and hilarious and the gameplay is honed to perfection.

Has Heavy Rain changed the landscape for storytelling?

Before 2010’s Heavy Rain there was ‘The Casting’ and before Quantic Dream’s next offering the world has seen KARA. Demoed at the Games Developer Conference in March it showcases the natural progress of the technology showcased in 2006. If you haven’t seen the seven minute video, KARA is a female andriod, just another off the production line and is being routinely tested before she is shipped off for purchase. Whilst the faceless programmer goes through his checklist, other robotic arms are busy at work putting her figure together, attaching a torso and limbs. It’s all something that wouldn’t look out of place in I, Robot.
It would be no bad thing if KARA was to relate to Quantic Dream’s future project, despite Cage’s claims of the opposite, playing the life of a cyborg on the run or questioning your own existence and worth to society. Or perhaps as someone on the other side of things, working for the mass production company responsible for KARA and tracking down the rogue robot. Yes, those scenarios may well be pulled straight from Isaac Asimov’s classic short story but you can’t deny that it’d make for a great premise, particularly with David Cage at the helm.
The test goes through basic movements and also impressively tests KARA’s very impressive language test where she recites phrases in German, French as well as singing in Japanese, just three of her three hundred known languages. It wasn’t just the variety of dialects she knew, it was the way Quantic Dream had captured every syllable of every word, every emotion of every sentence. This was an evolution of a marvellous piece of technology and its use in the developer’s next venture is a very exciting prospect indeed.
With the next version of the Unreal Engine in the offing (or perhaps waiting for the PlayStation 4) KARA’s visual technology is certainly on par with Epic’s ‘Samaritan’ demo we saw this time last year. The fact that Unreal Engine 4 has also been shown off behind closed doors clearly suggests that the next generation of gaming is going to look better than ever.
Expressions, emotions and actual words spoken were all captured to what we thought was perfection. This is full facial motion capture that rivals Team Bondi’s efforts on L. A. Noire; this alone is certainly no bad thing but throw in Cage’s creative storytelling and the studio’s next production is looking to be something special. The emotion portrayed by the cyborg toward the end of the video is easily capable of tugging at heartstrings and it’s hard not to feel some sort of attachment to her, however briefly. The whole idea feels right at home with Cage’s ‘interactive drama’ mantra that was so well established with Heavy Rain. Although Cage has denied that KARA has anything to do with Quantic Dream’s next project, it is not impossible, taking into account the look and feel of the ‘The Casting’ and its similarity with Heavy Rain.

CAPTAINCORTEZ GOES TO HELL AND BACK Shadows of the Damned is a game made by Grasshopper Manufacture, published by EA, with Suda 51 behind character design, gameplay designed and overseen by Shinji Mikami and music created by Silent Hill 2’s Akira Yamaoka.
As you begin your travels, it’s at this point that you’re prompted to select your difficulty level to begin play. The modes to choose from are: Lemon Hunter – this is your standard easy mode, giving casual gamers less of a hard time, and more of an easy ride through the game.
As you begin the game, you’ll be greeted with a cutscene of Garcia (your main hero and protagonist of the game) messing up a demonic goat in a very dark and lifeless alley. Before the demon dies, it tells Garcia that he should worry more about his girlfriend ‘hanging in there’ at home, before suddenly laughing, at which point Garcia turns its head into blood paté. This is where you first get a taste of the gameplay.
Demon Hunter – This is medium difficulty and the mode I began play on. It offers a good challenge for your first play through and can become fairly hard later on. If you’re a hardcore gamer like me, this would be the best mode to start out on, as it’ll keep you on your toes and give you a rough idea of how challenging the next mode up should be.
You gain control of Garcia in his apartment where the game familiarises you with the controls, offering tutorials to hopefully ensure your survival across the whole game. Without too many spoilers, as you enter your apartment room, several things happen. Demons burst through the windows and start moving towards you (they’re asking for it really) and it’s up to you to show them what a real Demon Hunter is made of.
Legion Hunter – This is the hardest difficulty setting of the game. I’ve only played through the game once so far, but this mode ramps up the difficulty of all bosses and standard enemies, limiting access to ammo, gems (to buy and upgrade your weapons and life from Christopher’s shop and the pause menu upgrade screen) and upgrades, mainly due to the fact they’re so incredibly expensive.
After you rid your home of these hell monkeys, your girlfriend Paula is kidnapped by the Demon Lord himself (Fleming), at which point Garcia is quick to follow by jumping out of his apartment window and landing inside the portal to hell, a second before it closes. Good timing!
Now, while I’m on the subject, there are three downers that I should point out in regard to the difficulty modes.
This is the true beginning of the game. Oh and cue the amusing trophy that states the obvious (‘You go to Hell’).
Upon entering hell, Johnson (your weapon and sidekick throughout the game) has a little chat with you, before transforming into a motorbike to transport you to the actual gates of hell. Hell by the way, is located just beyond the sound barrier in this game, so it’s a little hard to reach for any mortal not destined to kick Fleming’s butt. Of course, Garcia is special so no normal rules apply to him. Such is the life of a Demon Hunter.
1. You don’t get a New Game+, so when you beat the game you have to either start a new game on the same (or harder – up to you) difficulty setting, or load your last checkpoint on the file you began and completed play on, so unless you just wanted to beat the end of the game again, it’s pointless. 2. The three modes of difficulty you can select from remain the same throughout the game. You cannot unlock harder difficulty settings. 3. Even if you beat each difficulty setting, you unlock absolutely nothing other than a trophy to tell everyone of your great achievement. Plus, you can’t just jump on to the Legion Hunter difficulty expecting to unlock all trophies at once. You actually have to go through each mode once, completing the game three times in total (once on Lemon, once on Demon and once on Legion) to unlock each difficulty trophy. As you may have guessed, there isn’t much replay value to be had, but that still doesn’t stop Shadows of the Damned from being a great game. It’s an incredibly creative and fun title, but could have done with a little extra love. Maybe a survival mode could have been added, or a time trial mode to get through all of the bosses as fast as possible and of course, New Game+ would have been nice. Even so, think of this game as a more polished version of Resident Evil 4 with a much faster pace, incredibly fun gameplay mechanics and unlike Resident Evil, it allows you to run and gun, as well as dodge oncoming hordes and attacks with the X button.

REVIEW Now, going back to the game itself, as you might have expected, Hell isn’t a very nice place. Dead bodies are everywhere and range from sitting at tables slumped over each other as if they’ve been having some kind of dead tea party, to being launched sideways into a wall where they explode on impact into a bloody red mist of muck. Corpses hung up on butcher hooks (yes, you can punch them and watch them swing back and forth) and stacked up on top of one another like slaughtered pigs is fairly horrific, but adds to the dark humour of the game. As you might have gathered, Shadows of the Damned is a very gory game, having organic-looking areas that may fit in with the themes of Hellraiser, at the same time as offering fun and amusing references to films like The Evil Dead and Ghostbusters. You’ll laugh when you see the references for yourself and that’s part of what this game is all about. It may be gory and incredibly dark, but Shadows of the Damned is actually all about the fun, darker side of humour. It takes itself seriously when it needs to, but has a lot of comical value throughout the course of the game. It’s crazy, over the top and definitely a Suda 51 game. His style is scribbled all over it, like a passionate kid’s crayon drawing up the side of his parents living room wall. Now for the good part – the Weapons. You get three weapons over the course of the game (excluding the melee torch), but most weapons can be upgraded into a new form twice (using blue gems you find upon killing a boss). This means each weapon has three forms and thankfully each form upgrades in such a way that it feels fairly different from the last, giving variety to different combat situations and still managing to keep things fresh.
but becomes fairly powerful later on. Its colour scheme is red, offering red laser sight for pinpoint accuracy. This upgrades into the Hot Boner which looks slightly different from the standard Boner and allows for you to fire out sticky grenades (which explode after you fire the gun normally). Inside the ammo compartment of the gun is an unknown, white substance. Need I say more? Finally we have the Big Boner. However, you don’t get this via a blue gem upgrade. Instead, you acquire this gun in a more interesting way, though sadly you’re limited to using it in only one section of the game. It’s a bit of a shame, though, as its power is deadly! The Teether > The Teethgrinder > The Dentist The Teether is your standard machine gun typed weapon, with the colour scheme being blue. It fires out teeth at a decent rate, later on upgrading to the Teethgrinder which lets you lock on to an enemy and fire, whereas the Dentist lets you lock on to multiple enemies at once, at which point you can fire into the air randomly and watch as the teeth home in on their targets. The Skullcussioner > The Skullfest 9000 > The Skullblaster This is your typical shotgun typed weapon, with the colour scheme being green this time around. It starts off as a shotgun that fires out skulls for ammo and later upgrades into the Skullfest 9000, which allows for you to hold the trigger, charging up a maximum of 4 skulls to be fired off at once, and later turning into the Skullblaster, which if you charge for long enough actually surpasses the four skulls animation of the 9000 and allows you to fire off one giant skull like a huge bowling ball that rolls towards your enemies and explodes! Something I liked about upgrading a weapon was that whenever you received a new version of each weapon, your upgrades still remained the same, so if you maxed out the damage of a weapon, your new version would also have maxed out damage. The combat normally always stays fast-paced and if you fire light shots off at anything other than a boss, if close enough, you’re usually prompted to hit the square button where you can perform finishers that allow you to jump and stomp on downed (but crawling) demons, kick them in the crotch and pretty much punch their heads off. If you’re fast, you can hit enemies behind you with yet another button prompt that pops up on the screen right before impact.
On top of this, each weapon has an alternate fire option which allows you to fire off a ‘light’ shot (with any gun), stunning any opponent it hits. Bosses however, are usually immune to this. The weapons and upgrades are as follows: The Boner > The Hot Boner > The Big Boner The Boner is your starting off weapon. It begins as a pretty weak pistol
Now, I should also have mentioned that Johnson (your talkative floating skull head of a sidekick) can also turn into a torch. If you press the circle button once, it’ll hit things rapidly away from you and if you charge up the torch by holding the button, you’ll unleash an incredibly strong 720 degrees double spin attack that knocks your opponents over and sometimes kills them. This is your crowd-control weapon for when you run out of ammo, or just want to preserve some shots for bigger and more threatening creatures.

REVIEW Also, make sure you’re stocked up on alcohol throughout your adventure, as liver-destroying liquids actually serve as your go-to life source! You get three types of alcoholic beverages that heal a certain percentage of life and although these have to be bought primarily with your white gems, you can actually find some drinks around the levels in containers and barrels. The three types of alcohol you can purchase are: Saki – This heals about 30% of your health Tequila – This heals about 50% of your health Absinthe – This heals about 75% of your health You could say it’s strange that the more potent the drink, the more health you get back, but in Hell, very little is meant to make sense and instead of harming you, the alcohol serves as your only ward against death. So, best get drinking! Bosses are next up on the menu, offering very interesting and unique fights that make good use of the light and dark aspects of the game. The Darkness drains your life essence and can kill you if you remain in it for too long, which is why goat heads are so handy. Every time you shoot one with a light shot, it rids the area of darkness, protecting you and making your time in hell that little bit safer once again. Think of them as demonic condoms…that can move and make lots of noise. However, you’re not safe for long as you need to embrace the darkness at certain points if you’re to progress through the game. This is because the darkness reveals the weak points of bosses and can show you where demonic switches and locks are, that need to be shot in order for you to unlock a door that will lead into the next area. Just be careful, as the darkness also protects all demons, powering them up and making them much harder to kill.
I won’t go into too much detail where the bosses are concerned, but I will say that Elliot was my favourite, entirely for the fact he was completely off his head, balls-to-the-wall insane. Boss fights are great for changing the pace of the game, when you’re not having to constantly run away from your psychotic and semi-evil girlfriend, Paula. Shadows of the Damned has a good pace to it, offering a great mix of fast and addictive gameplay, along with puzzles that make good use
of the light and dark gameplay mechanics. Due to this, I feel if you’re a fan of puzzle solving, you’ll definitely have things to figure out, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say the puzzles are incredibly difficult to solve. They just offer enough variety to keep the game fresh from start to finish. Overall, Shadows of the Damned is a unique experience with a lot of great talent behind it. The gameplay is solid, the light and dark mechanics are a nice addition to an already decent genre and the character design is definitely up there with the best of Suda 51 and Grasshopper Manufacture’s imaginative designs. The music and haunting sound effects are great, adding atmosphere to a game that was already full of it and the visuals remain crisp, clean and creepy from start to finish. It would have been nice if the soundtrack came free with every pre-order, but sadly that wasn’t the case. The storyline is a little shallow and doesn’t really do a huge amount to make the trip to Hell worthwhile, but the main focus I think here is on the gameplay and no matter what anyone says about Shadows of the Damned, the gameplay is spot on. Shadows of the Damned, although flawed, is definitely a great game where lots of fun can be had. The only real thing that lets the game down for me personally is the lack of replay value and a lack of unlockable content, along with the weak storyline. It could have been better, but it’s a very creative game that should be played through at least once, sheerly for the experience. I give it an 8/10.

NATEC87 goes on a journey with ‘thatgamecompany’... So few games come along these days where you instantly feel a connection with what the developer is trying to do. That’s exactly what thatgamecompany has achieved here, and with aplomb. Your journey starts as a lone wanderer, surrounded by sand and only a bright light emanating from the peak of a mountain in the distance. There is no tutorial, no real guidance but you are naturally compelled to head in the direction of this mysterious glow. The moment you set off you’re faced with an area full of graves. Or are they graves? Are they not monuments? Or statues? The beauty of the game’s lack of context is that it gives you the opportunity to put your own spin on things. Why exactly are you heading toward that beacon of light? These are all questions you will hopefully answer for yourself once your journey is over.
Gameplay is simple and primarily consists of jumping and singing. Your crimson robes are accompanied by a scarf, the length of which dictates how long you can jump for. This can be extended by collecting small white cubes dotted around each landscape. Jumping is not infinite so needs to be recharged by scarf cloth and these pieces of cloth are automatically drawn towards you when close enough. You can also sing to gain access to other areas, surrounding yourself with scarf cloth to launch yourself to higher heights. The journey to this unknown mountain peak can be taken alone but it is the game’s multiplayer element that really succeeds. But how?! Despite your fellow journeyman not actually affecting your adventure, you can’t physically help each other out, hell, you can’t even talk to each other properly, a bond is formed the second you discover each other. You instantly feel compelled to wait for your companion, alert them to areas of interest or just highlight your genuine excitement that they are here experiencing this with you.

As well as playing alongside an actual character, you play alongside a quite outstanding soundtrack courtesy of Austin Wintory.

Whether it’s your first journey or your twentieth, you could inadvertently find yourself in the role of leader or following around your partner as they show you the ropes and where to find that elusive scarf extender. Only at the end of your playthrough do you find out who you were traversing these beautiful landscapes with. Even then it’s pretty difficult to remember and identify who they are when they were at your side. As well as playing alongside an actual character, you play alongside a quite outstanding soundtrack courtesy of Austin Wintory. Paced and executed to perfection it really rounds off a flawless experience. After my short-lived journey, a full playthrough clocks in at around 90 minutes, I realised I had never felt like this about a game. There are no giant shocks. No gaming clichés. Journey is something else entirely and I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I were to say this is the greatest game I’ve ever had the joy of playing.

PSN: SIX OF THE BEST SHATTER Block basher Shatter made its debut on the PSN in 2009. It’s pretty asyou-were regarding gameplay: destroy all blocks, defeat boss, progress to next level. There’s ten in all and there’s a lot of fun to be had in all.
NateC87 takes a look at six of the best PSN games currently available to purchase on the store.
One thing that certainly stands out is the soundtrack. The game’s deceivingly dulcet tones blend well with the on screen action. Even as the action antes up with the boss battles the music keeps you in control. The variety in level design and throughout each stage is enough to ensure progression never becomes a chore.
SUPER STARDUST HD A remake of the Amiga’s Super Stardust, it is one of the older titles on the PSN. Despite its age it certainly hasn’t lost any of its charm and is still an essential purchase from the Store. Defending planets from falling asteroids is the order of the day and there are plenty of power-ups to boot. Local multiplayer and online leaderboards give the game a competitive edge and you’ll find yourself striving to beat a stranger’s top score in no time.
DEAD NATION Zombies, zombies, zombies! A trophy in the game requiring you to kill 53, 596 of the blighters gives you an idea of the wave after wave gameplay in Dead Nation. It’s standard zombie-story fare here, not far away from a certain Capcom series. The blade cutter, rocket launcher & shotgun all feature in your arsenal but you’ll need more than big guns to stay alive. Distracting your undead foes with a car alarm or drawing their attention with a flare are just some ways you can get by in the game’s ten generously lengthy levels. Both local and online multiplayer (with voice chat support) make this a must have for any PS3 owner.
FLOWER Unsurprisingly thatgamecompany makes another appearance on our list with the second of their three titles on the Store. Moving on from their first PSN title, fl0w, it wasn’t entirely unexpected that the next game would border that of an actual game and interactive artwork. Taking the role of a gust of wind you amass petals and travel through levels providing colour to landscapes that were once without. Another game that established the developer as a leader in innovative gameplay and game design.
JOE DANGER Yes, it may be available on that other one as well but Joe Danger thoroughly deserves a mention regardless. Joe’s goal is to get back to the top of his game as a famed stuntman. You’ll do this by taking on certain tasks in levels filled with all sorts of hazards and obstacles. Don’t be fooled though. The game plays unlike a racer but is more tuned to a platformer. The tight controls really do the gameplay justice.
WIPEOUT HD The futuristic racer has grown up massively since its Playstation days and despite the series’ latest release on the PS Vita WipEout HD remains an essential purchase for any PS3 user. It gives a fresh alternative to those racers that are ground in realism, the commonplace for this generation. It may be standard WipEout racing but the speed and excitement is unmatched. Thanks to the Playstation 3 the series has never looked so good. Fun to play, difficult to master.
The game’s sandbox mode adds huge value to the downloadable title and being able to share levels over the PSN is another major plus.

Lollipop Chainsaw, like most of Suda 51’s games, looks set to be one of the craziest, wackiest and most insane Zombie death-fests in gaming history.
How did he lose his head, you wonder? Well, a zombie bit his arm, so Juliet felt the only way to save him was to decapitate him with her overly large, elongated chainsaw.
With the voice talents ranging from Michael Rosenbaum (of Smallville fame) and Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead), Grasshopper Manufacture are going all out this time, no doubt in an attempt to create one of the most engaging titles they’ve ever developed!
For a blonde moment of this level, I’m amazed poor Nick managed to hold onto his own consciousness. Still, with a game based so much around the supernatural, it’d feel odd if you didn’t have a talking head by your side!
Lollipop Chainsaw is about a teenaged girl named Juliet, who, during her time at High School, has somehow survived through an outbreak of the Undead. It’s now up to her to use her cheerleading skills to put an end to the Zombie Apocalypse and stop the crazed, issue ridden student who created this whole mess in the first place.
If you were to compare Lollipop Chainsaw to games of the current gen, you’d have a hard time doing so, because it takes so many great elements from a series of already existing titles, throws them into a blender and creates something incredibly gory, yet oh so wonderful. Obvious game inspirations however, come from titles such as Dead Rising, Devil May Cry, No More Heroes and bizarrely, the Scott Pilgrim film.
You’re not in this alone, however! Of course, where would a cheerleader be without her boyfriend? He may be a complete and utter headcase (no really, he’s just a head), but Nick will aid you throughout the course of the game and is key to some of your signature moves (such as ‘Nick Shoot!’, where you pull your boyfriends talking head off of your belt, throw it up into the air and blast it at the enemy like a football!).
Zombies die in comical ways, bosses use microphone stands in a similar manner to DMC3 Dante’s sword dash. On top of this, crazy dialogue much akin to that featured in No More Heroes is ever-present in the game, with truly weird but satisfyingly strange story elements being slung all around the place.

Then of course, let’s not forget that the styling is very reminiscent of the Scott Pilgrim movie. In short, the game is nuts! There have been four announced bosses in the game (known as “The Bosses of Zombie Rock!” with multiple secret bosses promised) so far and they are: Zed – Microphone User / Lead Singer – The Punk Rocking Misfit Mariska – Harp User – The Queen of Psychedelia Vikke – Drummer – The King of Viking Metal Josey – Keyboard player with 8-bit bombs – The Master of Funk
Mariska uses a harp and seems to have psychedelic abilities and giant hands to attack our main protagonist, Juliet. She also looks like a more twisted version of Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Vikke is your average Viking, sporting a horned helmet, a massive axe (not the guitar kind) and of course, shockingly powerful electric attacks. Josey however, wears a nappy with Voodoo face paint, hi-top trainers and a pimp cape! His special skills consist of, but are not limited to, moon walking, surfing on giant platforms and throwing out 8-bit bombs. Not so normal now, eh? Lollipop Chainsaw is strictly for adults, of course: Blood and Gore; Drug Reference; Intense Violence; Partial Nudity; Sexual Themes; Strong Language.
If the descriptions sound pretty normal to you, consider this, Zed screams words (that can follow and damage you) through his microphone, using both his voice and the microphone stand as his weapon.
and always have a habit of pulling things off perfectly. This is usually down to a good balance of mindless humour, unadulterated fun and addictive gameplay... all of which would be for nothing, if it wasn’t for how consistently original the character designs were.

Lollipop Chainsaw may not be for everyone, but with a unique and zany storyline, excessively stylish gameplay and enough one liners to create a single yellow line around the whole of London, Lollipop Chainsaw looks like it has a lot to offer fans of this unique genre, as well as being a good choice for those of you who want to try out something that’s a little different, but also fresh and new.
