ESL CONVERSATION GAMES

This esl conversation game is called "TABOO." TABOO is a fun esl conversation game that helps reinforce new vocabulary and it is a hoot to play! To play this esl conversation game the teacher will first divide the class into two teams. The teacher will then pick a number from one to ten. Whichever team guesses the correct number gets to go first. After one team has won the right to play first... the English teacher will bring one of the students up to the board. The teacher will turn the student so that his/her back is facing the blackboard / whiteboard. The teacher will write the KEYWORD on the board. For this example we will say that the Keyword is "SPIDERMAN." Spiderman will now become TABOO. And because Spiderman is Taboo, none of the students can say the word "Spiderman." Underneath the Keyword the teacher will then write three other words which are also Taboo. This means that the students cannot say these three sub keywords either. For this example the teacher would write three words which the students cannot say - because it would give away the main keyword. The three words under the main keyword/taboo word will be: Peter Parker Mary Jane Web The blackboard / whiteboard will look like this: SPIDERMAN Peter Parker Mary Jane Web

The students cannot say any of the words listed above and they cannot make any ACTIONS to help the student with his/her back to the board. When the teacher says, "Start" the one team will get two minutes to help the student guess the keyword. The students may give hints such as these: "He is a man." "He has an insect on his chest." "He has a girlfriend." "His aunt's name is May." "He wears a blue and red costume." "Sometimes he fights Venom, Sandman and the Green Goblin." "He has his own comic book." "The insect on his chest has eight legs." "He was bitten by a radio active insect and it made him special." If any of the students say any of the Taboo words, his/her team cannot win a point. But if the student with his back turned to the board says, "Spiderman" - his/her team will get one point. And the team with the most points at the end of the ESL CONVERSATION GAMES lesson is the winning team. To see a video of this game go to: http://www.squidoo.com/eslgames_hgb

ESL CONVERSATION GAMES: WHEEL OF FORTUNE This ESL Conversation Game is called WHEEL OF FORTUNE. First divide your ESL class into two teams. One team can be the RED team and the other team can be the BLUE team. The teacher will think of a sentence or word(s) to write on the board. For example: ________ The ESL teacher (you) will write the above on the blackboard. Then you can ask one student from one team to guess a letter. If the student guesses a correct letter you will then write that letter on the dash that it corresponds with. For example: Team Red guesses the letter "I." The ESL teacher would then write all of the "I" letters IN THE TEAM'S COLOR. I_ i_ _ _ _ _ Then it would be the BLUE team's turn. If they guess a correct letter you would write that letter - in the teams color. If they guessed a wrong letter; then you would not write any letters. After each team has a guess, their turn is over and it is the other teams guess. You will continue to play this game until the sentence puzzle is solved. ANSWER: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ = IT IS A CAT When the puzzle is solved the teacher would then count up all the RED letters and all the BLUE letters. The team with the most letters wins. This is a great warm up ESL conversation game because the ESL students love to play it and you are teaching English at the same time. This game can be used at anytime in the class and you can always play it if you want to liven up the classes spirit! ESL CONVERSATION GAMES: HEART GUN BOMB Heart, Gun, Bomb is one of the newest and funnest ESL Conversation Games in the world. This ESL Conversation game is specifically for ESL teachers that want to help their students learn faster and have fun at the same time. Heart, Gun, Bomb can be played solely on the blackboard but I will explain to you how to play a variation of this game using cards. The rules to play this ESL Conversation Game: Heart, Gun, Bomb are as follows: Divide the class into two teams. Write all of the students names under their team name and give each student three hit points. Team 1 Barry OOO Sally OOO Mitch OOO Susan OOO Bill OOO Team 2 Susan C. OOO Jerry OOO Sean OOO Amy OOO Jill OOO Next, draw a grid on the board with the number 1 - 10 on to the top; and write the letters A - J on the very far left side. Now the students will be able to choose which box they want to pick. Then ask every student to stand up; after they answer an English question they can sit down. After every student has answered an English question. One player from team 1 gets to pick a box then it always switches to the other team; so that the game is fair. In Gun, Heart, Bomb -- a Gun can shoot one hit point off the opposing teams player. -- a Heart can give one extra hit point to someone on that players team. -- a Bomb will blow up and destroy one hit point off from who ever picked it. The ESL Conversation game is over when one team has no more hit points; thus the other team would win.

To play this game with cards the ESL teacher would first write on the whiteboard: A = 4 guns K = 3 guns Q = 3 hearts J = 1 gun and 1 heart 10 = 3 bombs 9 = 2 bombs 8 = 1 bomb 7 = pick another card 6 = pick two cards 5 = 2 guns 4 = 1 gun 3 = 2 hearts 2 = Miss your Turn When it is a student turn to pick a box on the grid; he/she will pick the box and then pick a card from the top of the deck. Whatever number he/she gets -- the teacher will write the gun/heart/bomb in the box. Play until there is a winner. And of course this is only a guide line. Feel free to be creative and add new items, twists or feel free to change what each card means. ESL CONVERSATION GAMES : CORNERS This ESL conversation game is called "Corners." It is very easy to play and it is a lot of fun! You can play this ESL Conversation game at the beginning of class to warm the students up; or at any time that you sense that the students focus is not well; or at the end of the class so that the students go home happy. This esl game is usually played with younger students, but it can be played with all different age levels. The best way to figure out if this game is a hit in your class is to test it out. If the students have a blast playing...play it more often. If the reaction is not great, then you should find a different game to play with them. To start this ESL game you will first tell the students "What corners are," and designate each corner a number. Corner 1, corner 2, corner 3 and corner 4. The teacher will close his eyes and count to ten. When he/she is counting the students will quietly go to one of the four corners and wait. When the teacher reaches ten he/she will then pick one corner. "Corner 2!" The teacher will open his eyes and every student that is at corner two is out; and those students must sit in their chairs until the game is over. The teacher will then close his eyes and count to ten again; the remaining students will then go to whichever corner they choose. When the teacher finishes counting to ten, he/she will pick another corner and attempt to catch more students. Keep repeating this process until there is only one student left; and that student is the winner! Hey! This ESL Conversation Game is called, "Change Seat if..." And instead of always saying, "Change Seats if..." you could also say, "Switch Seats if," or "Trade seats if..." This ESL Conversation Game can be used as a warm up activity, at the end of the class; so that your students go home with a smile on their faces; or you can play this game when you want to notice your students focus fading. To play this esl game all you have to say is, "Change Seats if..." - you have black hair! - you have a sister! - you like to eat hamburgers! - you are sitting beside a boy! - your favorite color is red! - you like to do homework! - you don't like to do homework! You can basically say anything after you say, "Trade Seats if..." and if whatever you said is true about any student in the class ~ they must "Switch Seats" with one of the other students who also has to switch his/her seat. Also, if you are teaching younger students you should use vocabulary that has already been taught. And if you are teaching more advanced students you should try to use vocabulary or subjects which they have knowledge about. This is one of the best ESL Games to play with your class and every student will really be happy to play it; and while you are playing this game you are also improving the students listening skills. So try this game out next time that you are in the ESL classroom! Http://www.squidoo.com/ESLgames_hgb

ESL CONVERSATION GAMES 2010 This ESL Conversation / Writing game is called "WORD WEBS." I believe that most people are taught how to make Word Webs sometime before high school... but if you never learned how, I will teach you right now. First you would pick a Subject. For this example we will pick the word "Winter." We would write "Winter" in the middle of the page/board. We would then draw a circle around the word. Next we would need to think of words that are associated with Winter. So, we could also write "Snow," and then draw a circle around the word and use a line to attach it to the "Winter," circle. From "Snow" we could attach "Snowballs," "Skiing," "Cold," "Snowman," and any other word which is related to the circled word. From the word "Cold," we could link other circled words such as, "Ice," "Freezies," "Ice Cream," and any other word which is related to the circled Keyword. The way that I use this game in the ESL classroom is: 1. I do one or two examples on the board. I ask the students for help to think of the keywords and if they are nervous to answer... I will do the first one by myself so that they get an understanding of how to make a word web. 2. I put the ESL students into groups. For my classes... I usually put them into groups of no bigger than four ESL students. 3. We pick a word to use as our main keyword/subject... 4. I give the students ten minutes to try to make the best word web. 5. Once time has expired... I will invite all of the students to come up to the boards and work as one group and make the best Word Web on the board. 6. Collect the papers and check the papers. ESL students love to do these word webs because they can write about anything if they are CREATIVE enough. http://www.squidoo.com/eslgames_hgb
