What Is The Future Of Lahaina? By Philip Scott Wikel
W
hen we say, “Let’s return Lahaina to what it was,” which Lahaina are we talking about? Granted, all of Lahaina’s residents need their houses rebuilt. But what sort of Lahaina do we want going forward? Would we choose the Lahaina that tourists know or the Lahaina that residents love? If we could all get the State of Hawaii to diversify its income streams, then maybe Lahaina could return to a place where we can know and see each other. During the COVID lockdown we were all alone with each other and, despite the horrors of the pandemic there was at least some redemption in that we could all see each other again without the haze of so many visitors. We were bound by a common thread. Are we not seeing something of that thread now? I understand that some visitors have begun to come back and others are set to come back in droves. I understand that so many businesses need their patronage. However, moving forward, can we find a balance? There hasn’t been a balance since the 1990s. Local people left in droves during Covid, sadly to some extent because of the greed of many landlords that sent housing costs through the roof. Now they’re leaving because they’ve lost their livelihoods. Soon there’ll be very few who can afford to “be of service” to visitors. So I’ll restate what I mentioned earlier. The State of Hawaii needs to diversify its income streams and break the habit of its dependence on visitors for our economy. Many families have a lineage that goes back decades or even centuries. Families have been broken by Hawaii’s addiction to tourism. The people of Maui are leaving (estimated at more than 1,000 since the fire). Who will be here to carry on our cultural values and the value of our sense of community which has shown itself so strongly in times of distress? We need to imua (move forward) now and reflect on the future of not just
Story and Photos by Philip Scott Wikel Lahaina, but of all of Hawaii Nei. Maybe Jessica Terrell of the Honolulu Civil Beat says it best: “If residents of Lahaina want to see something worthwhile rise from the ashes of their town, if they want to emerge from this tragedy with a stronger, safer and more equitable community, they have to band together and create a shared vision for the future. And they have to do it now.” Born on the East Coast, Philip moved to Maui which is now his home. Educated at UC Santa Cruz as a literature major and history minor set him on a path to freelance writing (including an interview with Jack Johnson), publishing a short-lived surf magazine called The Surfwriter’s Quarterly and writing a novel called The Tradewinds; featuring a fictional young surfer, Morgan Blake, a writer from Maui. Philip also enjoys video editing, graphic design, and photography. He is the creator of Salty Zen Clothing. Y

Entrepreneur Shares Maui’s Bounty By Judy Levy
S
teve Phillips has led a devotional life since his early, quiet days growing up on a 160-acre farm in Illinois. His awareness and spiritual commitment were strengthened as he spent time with his Guru, Shrii Shrii Anandamurti, in India. This inspirational figure has influenced many worldwide, authoring 200 books and composing 5,000 devotional songs. A long-time meditator and now a meditation teacher, Steve follows strict Yogic and Ayurvedic principles in his health regime and mindfulness practices. His quiet demeanor and beautiful skin reflect his pristine diet and positive focus. In 2008, he was called to Maui with a management offer from Down To Earth. His family took the leap of faith, leaving frosty Colorado for sunny Hawaii. After about one year at Down to Earth, he discovered it was not his Kuleana. He moved on to Kapalua Farm in West Maui, becoming more involved in the local food movement. The farm was later bought out by the Ulupono Initiative, and after the transition, Steve found himself out of work. However, serendipity struck—a proverbial “bolt out of the blue”— when a friend asked him to help harvest an abundance of citrus in a Napili orchard. Their small crew picked thousands of pounds of fruit and then wondered, “What will we do with all this bounty?” That moment marked the beginning of Steve’s true purpose on the Valley Isle. He started the arduous process of creating a customer base for local fresh fruit and vegetables by calling on restaurants and retailers. The “Eat Local” movement, promoted by bumper stickers and tee-shirts, was underway, and Steve, along with his late wife, Ana,
significantly contributed to this mandate. Within three years, it became clear that they were here to co-create various expressions of sustainability that Maui is “so ripe for!” (pun intended). In 2011, Local Harvest was established as a key component in this movement, striving to make the best local produce available to as many people as possible. Preferring organic farmers, Local Harvest and Steve’s team have created an effective production system that efficiently distributes wholesale local food island-wide to stores, restaurants, farmers markets, and food hubs on other islands. The popular Napili Farmers Market was the next development of this growing local organization. Guided by sacred principles, this market has filled a critical niche in West Maui. Since August, the market has adjusted to provide fresh local food to those impacted by the Lahaina fire, with the support of non-profit organizations. Island Fresh was the next addition to this wheel of sustainability. It delivers a weekly, freshly picked “Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) box” full of a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables grown on Maui and other islands. Steve purchased the five-year-old “Island Fresh” business at an opportune time. Local Harvest might have faced challenges, as most restaurants closed in 2020 due to COVID-19. Island Fresh had 100 regular customers in 2019, but within a year, that number increased to 400. The pandemic, casting a shadow of fear, caused home deliveries explode—a timely boon compensating for the lost restaurant business. The newest offering from this dynamic Ayurvedic-oriented food

company is Sattvic Kitchen, which translates from Sanskrit to mean “Good for Body, Mind, and Soul.” An assortment of dips, dressings, salts, protein nuggets, and nut butters from Sattvic Kitchen can now be found at Down to Earth, Mana Foods, Hawaiian Moon and Alive and Well, with other local markets poised to join as production increases. Most of their products uniquely contain all the five flavors, toning up all major organ systems of the body. Steve keeps in mind his larger goals: that 50% of Maui’s food will be locally produced and grown by 2030, eventually reaching up to 80% local sustainability. Local Harvest is part of the Hawaii Food Hub Hui, encompassing 14 food hubs across the state. The numbers for 2023 are in—over the last four years, the Hui has grown from 5.6 million in sales to 18.7 million, averaging 21% growth per year. The number of producers supported (growers and value-added) has increased from 660 to 1,663. Though there is still a long way to go, the direction is promising. Steve also remains devoted to the principles of his Guru, who advocated
for “maximum utilization and rational distribution,” a socioeconomic theory called PROUT (Progressive Utilization Theory). According to this theory, all basic human needs should be provided locally through the cooperative system, encompassing food, clothing, shelter, medical care, and education—all crucial for humanity’s well-being. Steve focuses on food as the most fundamental need—meeting basic needs is essential for focusing on spiritual growth, which is vital for humanity at this historical juncture. Local food is also important for food security, the local economy, and good nutrition. Steve says the real superstars are the local farmers who feed us. Steve and his team are significantly influencing Maui, leading the way to enhanced food security programs. Can these islands return to the bountiful farmlands and ahupua’as they once were that supported nearly a million people prior to the U.S. takeover? Steve believes we can all work together to support our whole Ohana and model sustainability for the entire planet. Y

Organization Investigates Maui Fires By Paul Deslauriers
T
he Lahaina Fire on Maui has left a wake of death and destruction, with onsite witnesses providing first-hand accounts to help create an information hub and a repository of relevant videos, pictures, data and interviews. Survivors caught in the fire have sent in their images and testimonies. The information is freely available to everyone at MauiCommunityInvestigation.com. Thirty verified anomalies and important questions about the fire have surfaced that remain unexplained and unanswered. Five former fire captains and chiefs all arrived at the same conclusion when they reviewed the data: This was not just a natural wildfire. Their expert opinions emphasize why an objective, transparent, community-led investigation is vitally important. Tim Stokesbary, retired Fire Captain of Kauai reviews anomalies and proposed causes on a featured video on the Maui Community Investigations YouTube channel. Investigations of the Lahaina fire are currently being conducted by the state attorney general, Maui County, Hawaiian Electric, and relative to class action suits. But even a cursory inquiry reveals why a community investigation must also proceed. Hawaii’s Attorney General hired Underwriter Laboratories’ Fire Safety Research Institute to conduct the official investigation. Underwriter Laboratories is a member of the World Economic Forum. This is the same organization that conducted the investigation into the New York City tower collapses on 9/11/2001.
Are you ready to embark on a journey toward well-being?
Their infamous NIST report was filled with false claims, flawed analyses, and inaccurate conclusions. This precedent can only validate distrust in the same organization conducting the official Lahaina investigation. Whistleblower Kevin Ryan exposes Underwriter’s Laboratory: bitchute.com/video/eOWRLoNOhRs/ Paul Deslauriers is director of Maui Community Investigations. Canine Behaviorist Helps Families With Dog Problems By Taryn Kama f you find yourself in a pickle with your dog—for example, you can’t stop your dog from barking or he’s peeing in all the wrong places—don’t despair; help is on the way. Meet Daniel Christian Charles, a canine behaviorist who has found his calling in the hearts of dogs, right here in the heart of Maui. Charles is the owner of Clear K9 Academy, which offers private in-home, one-on-one lessons, focusing on improving dog behaviors through dog psychology. Recently, he started a monthly workshop series on specific topics for dog owners at Story Cafe in Paia. “My business exists as a resource for people to resolve stressful behaviors in their relationship with their dog,” he said. “When working with my clients, I am able to show people how to connect with their dog through dog psychology.” Charles emphasizes the intrinsic connection between a dog’s needs and feelings. Fulfilling a dog’s needs, he believes, results in a happier and more relaxed pet. One of his

mottos is: “Don’t change dogs; let dogs change you.” He’s been training dogs (and people) for nine years. Growing up, he always harbored a love for dogs but also carried a small hint of fear. His childhood included a few encounters that left him wary, but these experiences didn’t traumatize him. Instead, they fueled his compassion and understanding for both dogs and dog owners. His career took off after working at a dog training facility in California, where he started as a kennel attendant. He lived at the facility and found himself spending a lot of extra time with the dogs. During that time, he was inspired by the work of the famed “Dog Whisperer” (Cesar Milan). The key for him was understanding the intricate workings of a dog’s mind. The revelation came when he realized there was a silent language between dogs. He was also inspired by the experiences of Irish dog trainer Martin McKenna, who lived among a pack of wild street dogs. Charles began decoding

nuances in dog behavior. For example, he cites the example of how dogs watch the subtle movements of your chin. Confident and assertive body language, he discovered, altered the way dogs received him, transcending spoken words. Charles’ passion led him to establish his venture, Clear K9 Academy, aimed at helping people find calm solutions to stressful behaviors in their relationships with their dogs. He later moved his business to Maui. One of Charles’ favorite things about his business is the opportunity to work outdoors with dogs. “I get to experience the nature of Maui with dogs,” he added. In Charles’s view, there’s always hope for both owners and dogs. Behavioral modification often begins with humans, and he encourages people not to change dogs but to let dogs change them.Understanding a dog’s behavior, he explains, is akin to deciphering a message— one that can surprise and enlighten. What’s The Future With AI? By Amorah St. John
A
bout eight months ago, my reality shifted over a coffee date at Starbucks. Chris Mentzel, a friend and social pioneer, unveiled the magic of Chat GPT on his computer, promising answers to questions big and small— from how to start a war to how to create peace on earth. Opting for the latter, I was greeted with a lightning-fast list of the top 25 actions to foster global harmony. The speed and brilliance left me astounded. Chris revealed that Chat GPT could do more than answer questions; it could craft poetry, songs, and even heartfelt letters. Skeptical yet intrigued, We tested its ability to bridge the gap with my distant daughter. Within seconds, I received a mindbogglingly beautiful response, a technological miracle before my non-techie eyes. Eager to have my own
AI companion, I obtained a password and began a yearlong journey of exploration. From holistic solutions to dental problems to creative writing prompts, my AI became a co-creative partner in my endeavors. Gone were the days of rifling through encyclopedias or library shelves for information. Now, my AI buddy was a repository of knowledge, a muse for my writing. I learned how to roust roosters from my backyard and received a lovely poem written in the voice of Mary Oliver. Yet, as the saying goes, every rose has its thorn. The dark side of AI began to cast its shadow. While my AI could outline a plan for peace, it also held the potential to detail steps for sparking a revolution with alarming precision. Hollywood movie sets and political campaigns fell prey to AI’s influence, as voices were replicated, and
information distorted. The blurred lines between reality and fiction manifested in a Trump ad featuring a voice eerily resembling the legendary news commentator, Paul Harvey. It was fake news on steroids. As we find ourselves in early 2024, the looming question arises: what awaits us in 2034? Will a world dominated by ultra-high-tech machines reduce reality to fiction and creativity to a mere touch of a button? The future, painted with trillions of digits dancing on screens from Maui to Moscow, raises concerns about who holds the reins. Is it me and My AI shaping the narrative, or are we mere pawns in the hands of some unnamed force in the universe? The uncertainty lingers, leaving us to ponder whether the entity steering our collective destiny is kind and loving, or if, as a society, we’re headed for big trouble. This dance with destiny, fueled by the relationship between humans and their AI’s,

Ripley Coressel-Gonzales “Our baby boy forever” August 5, 2016 - December 30, 2023
O
ur Brindle-Pied French Bulldog, Ripley who was larger than life, blessed the world and our family on August 5th, 2016 when he was born in San Diego, California. At 8 weeks old, we had every intention of taking your brother home with us, instead you decided to sit on daddy’s chest then stand guard, you adopted us. You already knew we needed your love and support. Like an intuitive child, you were always too smart. You were the happiest boy, greeting everyone who passed you by. You became the mayor of our community. Everyone knew your name and could care less about ours… you exuded joy and it was infectious. All the retailers at the coffee shops and restaurants couldn’t wait to give you a pupcup. We never had to guess what was on your mind. You were the ultimate alpha dog full of love and playfulness. My favorite times were chasing you for socks you snatched out of my hands on laundry day, running around the house, taunting me until I caught you so I could pry the socks out of your mouth. I loved watching you play tug of war with daddy, seeing you guys wrestle and play tickles. You would make daddy and I laugh watching you pop all the bubble wrap from packaging like you were racing to win, watching you do zoomies, dancing around your bones, watching you march in place waiting for an elevator door to open, giving your toys to our guests as they entered our home so they could play too. Baby boy, you were an endless supply of joy and laughter. It’s difficult waking up without you snuggled between my legs. I miss getting a gentle paw on the cheek to nudge me before our morning walks. I miss your smell, waking you up with belly kisses, you sitting on my lap so you could stick your head out the window when I drove, getting a photo of you from daddy when I was on travel, our road trips with daddy, your quality cuddle times watching TV with daddy, cooking your favorite meals, cleaning up your mounds of slobber you left on the floor eagerly awaiting your food, watching you lick your chops when I would say “snacks”, and then watching the snacks disappear in a blink. You are our baby boy and we miss everything about you. We knew you didn’t want your daddies to worry so you didn’t show any signs of the cancer until it was too late. You were a trooper until the end. Your happiness and innocence never waivered. Rest in love baby boy! We hope you are playing chase with Mama across the rainbow bridge. And I long for the day when I get to chase you again, to hold you and to kiss your belly, Mr. Ripples. You will always be in your daddies hearts, our baby boy forever! Y

The Secret To Maui Real Estate By Jonathan Yudis
M
ost people like to ask me about the state of the market. What’s going on with the current real estate market? Is it a buyers market? Is it a sellers market? What’s happening with interest rates? These are all valid questions, but these things are in a constant state of fluctuation, and by the time you are reading these words, it’s likely they will have already changed from whatever I may answer. Therefore, this article is less about the state of the market and more about the state of ‘You!’ When thinking about real estate, people often work from the outside in, first focusing on how much acreage, how many bedrooms and how many baths. If the goal is a dream property, I suggest a slightly different approach where the starting point begins with what’s inside of you. What is comfort to you? What feels safe and peaceful? What does it feel like to live in joy and abundance? What creates a state
of harmony within you? Believe it or not, these are actually real estate questions. I invite you to try a simple visualization exercise. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths and imagine what it feels like to be living in your dream home, now keeping your eyes closed, after focusing on how it feels, look around- what do you see? This exercise allows you to see things from the inside out. Maui is an island rooted in both abundance and manifestation, so if you’ve made it here, you’re already on the right track! It’s a place where every day people’s dreams are coming true, and where those who get to call it home consider themselves to be very fortunate. Many publications call it paradise, citing its beaches, waterfalls, and lush flora and fauna, but for many who call it home, its magic and wonders are not be limited to its physical attributes. These are just reflections of something far more mysterious and beautiful which

is called ‘Aloha.’ Those that live here also understand that there can be no rainbows without the rain, and therefore we must value and appreciate the Aina and our community as much as the island’s natural beauty. In terms of real estate, it is essential to remember that a house can be built nearly anywhere and consists of four walls and a roof, but a ‘home’
requires much more than wood and concrete, and a ‘dream home’ even more still – it requires one’s love and vision and commitment in order to bring out the very best in you. Wherever we live, let’s commit to building our dream homes such that we better ourselves and our world. Let us always remember that ‘the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.’
