Maui Open Studios, Summer Edition Brings Artists And Enthusiasts Face To Face
By Carolyn Quan
The well-loved annual art event, Maui Open Studios, announces its 3rd Annual Summer Edition.
The MOS 2024 Summer Edition begins on Saturday, July 13 and runs for three consecutive weekends islandwide. Now with three events a year (July, November, and February), the annual Maui Open Studios events offer up great art, inspiration and an opportunity to meet artists in person and buy art directly from them.
Over three weekends in July, the artists open up their studios and exhibition spaces to show and sell their work to the public as well as talk story, connect, and inspire visitors through one-on-one interactions and in some cases, live demonstrations.
The entire event is free to the public and refreshments are often served.
The MOS 2024 Summer Edition in July features 27 participating artists working in various mediums including ceramics, mixed media, fiber, painting, and more.
Visit our online artist directories at MauiOpenStudios.com to design your self-guided tours and use your GPS to find artists on each weekend of the event. An interactive Google map is also provided on our website and can be used as an independent resource.
Artists will be open from 11am - 6pm each weekend.
The dates for the upcoming MOS 2024 Summer Edition are as follows:
Weekend 1: South Maui • Saturday and Sunday, July 13 and 14
Weekend 2: Central and North Maui (including Haiku) • Saturday and Sunday, July 20 and 21
Weekend 3: Upcountry Maui • Saturday and Sunday, July 27 and 28
* Note: The West Side artists will be showing on other parts of the island while rebuilding continues on the West Side.
MOS is pleased to announce the formation of a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Maui Art Alliance Inc., to
oversee and produce the Maui Open Studios events.
Their mission is to sustain the MOS events far into the future and to provide resources, exposure, and selling opportunities for Maui’s visual artists. Stay tuned for the upcoming Maui Art Alliance website.

Lahaina Recovery Continues
A Year After: Restoring Homes And Hearts
By Cindy Schumacher
As we move towards a year since the devastating 2023 Maui wildfires, disaster response efforts are still trying to address the urgent needs of survivors.
The island has a long road ahead before it fully recovers, with significant housing, infrastructure and economic challenges.
Maui wildfires continue to impact economic recovery with a sluggish economic growth in the 2024 forecast according to new information compiled by the state Department of Business Economic Development and Tourism. The information was part of the department’s second quarter 2024 Statistical and Economic Report. Construction remains a bright spot for the economy, according to the report. In April 2024, construction added 3,300 jobs compared to the same month in 2023.
On Wednesday, June 5th, The Maui County Council approved the first new budget since the devastating wildfires last summer. A $1.7 billion spending plan for the fiscal year 2025 starting July 1 includes aid to the ongoing recovery in Lahaina and parts of Upcountry to upgrade housing solutions for the approximately 12,000 people displaced by the August 8th fires. Also included are funds for the Maui Fire Department and the Maui Emergency Management Agency.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green has made it clear, “We must find or create housing, rebuild the historic town of Lahaina, provide financial assistance to survivors, and improve emergency preparedness. I am taking all issues into consideration starting with the biggest, which is housing. By the wildfire’s first anniversary, more than 90% of the destroyed lots will be cleared.”
Additionally, the list of organizations, nonprofits, and volunteers that have helped, and still are helping, local victims is colossal. The resilience of the community to come together and support each other has been nothing short of outstanding. Miraculously, people of Hawai’i

stepped up, worked together, and helped save each other. Putting aside all differences they did what needed to be done. There were terrible and beautiful moments.
While moving forward to physically restore and rebuild, there are still mental health issues that need to be addressed. "Trauma has made it difficult for individuals to navigate many of the federal assistance programs, to access federal resources, to address housing and property damage and other disasterrelated costs," said Dr. Bridget Bongaard, a board-certified internal medicine physician and medical director, who set out to help those who are experiencing grief and PTSD due to the Maui wildfires, or any kind of trauma. She understands that recovery efforts must also keep the trauma of impacted communities in mind.
Bongaard explained, “By helping people identify the difficult emotions they have experienced, and realizing that life is different now, they come to the question, ‘how do we move forward and begin to heal?’”
“The goal of trauma healing is to give participants a realization that they have control over their lives again," she said.

“Since the fires I have been constantly busy helping others with their trauma and healing. Working with Dr. Bongaard was the first occasion where I took time to heal myself... Also, we need reminders to reframe a situation, to recognize that it is not hopeless, and that an opportunity to move on is there if we keep seeking it,” she said.
Bongaard concluded, “Everyone has experienced pain or loss in his or her life at some time. I encourage all those with hearts that need healing to reach out to those in the community who can help in that area.” For information about a workshop or consultation, call Dr. Bongaard at (808) 866-6155.
YBill Banning Transient Vacation Rentals Faces Long Journey Towards Adoption
The recent Maui Planning Commission meeting on June 25, 2024 focused on the potential ban of transient vacation rentals (TVRs) listed on the Minatoya list. This list includes over 7,000 units across Maui, with a significant concentration in West Maui and South Maui.
The proposed legislation aims to phase out these TVRs, starting with West Maui by July 1, 2025, and extending to the rest of the island by January 1, 2026. This move is part of a broader strategy to address housing shortages and aid residents displaced by the recent wildfires. Mayor Richard Bissen, along with grassroots advocacy group Lahaina Strong, supports this initiative.
According to The Maui News, Mayor Bissen made
these remarks at the beginning of the meeting: “We recognize that this bill is only part of the solution, and that we will also need to explore strategic tax policy and zoning changes to support our objective of creating more long-term housing.”
The plan, however, faces significant opposition from the short-term rental industry and property owners, who argue that phasing out TVRs will negatively impact the local economy and tourism. The Maui Vacation Rental Association (MVRA) is mobilizing efforts to contest the bill, encouraging members to provide testimony and advocate against the proposed changes. They emphasize the economic contributions of TVRs and the potential legal challenges the county might face.
The bill faces more meetings before potentially moving to the Maui County Council for final approval.

Dealing With PTSD
Aloha and thanks for picking up and reading our July/August edition of Maui Pulse! We’ll be publishing our sister publication in August, Maui Vision Magazine, and will be back with Maui Pulse in September.
As recovery continues, it is apparent the mood of many community members has been a bit of apprehension about the future, both for our individual economic survival and the threats to our low key lifestyle we have all come to enjoy.
Many people are challenged by rising living costs and with finding the basics of a roof over their head. Still, Maui keeps working it’s magic to attempt to soothe our souls with its magnificent beauty.
A year later, many of us are still beset with post-traumatic stress disorder, and on the pages of this issue, you may find some resources that can help offer you solutions to counteract your distress. And with so many arts events are taking place, take time to stop and enjoy!
I admit I am an optimist. In the end it all works out. It always does! - Eric T. Richter

Aloha Maui Pride celebrated a hugely successful Pride Week in 2024, with events that drew impressive crowds and vibrant participation.
"We are all very happy with the turnout and are already planning for June 2025," said Jim Doran, an organizer for Aloha Maui Pride.
Highlights of the week included the sold-out Pacific Whale Foundation Boat Party and the Pride Brunch at Nalu’s, which saw over 160 attendees. The Youth and Family Night attracted nearly 400 participants, while more than 20 hikers joined the Pride Hike to the Waihe’e Coastal Trail. The Pride Festival on Market Street in Wailuku was a major highlight, drawing over 2,200 attendees.
On June 5, the Aloha Maui Pride organization, along with Mayor Bissen, County of Maui representatives, and the Maui police chief, gathered to officially proclaim June as Pride Month. The Mayor’s Pride Proclamation and Flag Raising ceremony outside the County of Maui Kalana O Maui building in Wailuku had more than 65 attendees.
It was recently reported in "Maui News Now" that the Pride Flag was illegally removed twice at the County building in Wailuku.
Doran noted that: "The Flag matter ended up a non-event. The flag was taken down twice—but by the same person. He didn’t steal the flag. Each time he took it down he then left it in the County Building and recorded himself saying he would take it down every time it was put back up. The Mayor’s Office filed a Police Report and then he stopped."
The spirit of Pride Week is strong, and the community looks forward to continuing the celebration in the coming years.

Lahaina Barter Grants Offered
By Toni Ivey
Maui businesses affected by the Lahaina fires are eligible for grants of barter credits which can then be used to buy goods and services offered by members of the barter exchange Aloha Barter Group, based on Hawaii Island, and select barter groups on the mainland. Several mainland barter groups raised and donated over $50,000 in barter credits to be distributed to Maui. Of that $50,000+, more than $30,000 is still available.
Maui businesses can join totally free and then apply for a grant of $1,000-to-$5,000 in barter credits which can be spent with other barter members, thus conserving precious cash. Membership in Aloha Barter is totally free to join and no monthly fees for Maui members. For the first 12 months of membership, not even the 5% transaction fee is required.
Several Maui businesses are already members of Aloha Barter, offering such services as accounting, financial business coaching, photography, counseling, massage and other health therapies. We also have an online bikini shop, a sport fishing supply (doing Keiki classes on the beach), a jeweler, a computer supplier and a boutique.
New members can utilize these services as well as services by Aloha Barter members on Hawaii Island and thousands of businesses on the mainland through Aloha Barter’s reciprocal relationships with barter groups there.
In addition, Aloha Barter is currently in a campaign to encourage members that will offer such services as painting, cleaning, electric work, plumbing, food establishments, handymen, lawyers and advertisers. Just about every type of profession is needed on Maui. Maui businesses or affected residents can join free at www.AlohaBarter.com. If you have questions, contact Toni Ivey at (808) 895-3076.

Revering Our Native Culture
Exploring A Few Hawaiian Tales About Maui
By Jonathan Yudis
We all love Maui, but how many of us know about the legends of Maui himself?
Some call him the prankster, others a great cultural hero; perhaps he was both. Let’s explore a few of the famous tales about his magic and wonder.
Maui is often said to be ‘kolohe’ or mischievous, but it’s important to remember that he’s also revered for taking actions that better the lives of his loved ones and people.
According to certain Hawaiian traditions, he is known as the son of Akalana and Hinaakeahi, and though they had other sons, he is the one that received magical powers.
In ancient times, Maui was mesmerized by both the beautiful songs of the birds as well as their colorful and dazzling feathers. However, he realized that while others could hear their sounds, no one else was able to physically see them. The people didn’t know where these sounds or songs came from. Since Maui loved his people, he wanted everyone to be able to appreciate them fully, so he called upon his heart for a solution. He realized that compassion was the solution, and he used his magic to make all birds visible to the naked eye.
him along. He told them that if had they brought him, they would have had hundreds of fish, not just the one shark they had caught. So the next day they brought him with them. When they were far at sea, he flung his special hook, crafted from the bones of his divine ancestors, deep into the water. He told his brothers to paddle as hard as they could to keep up with the catch on his hook. When one of his brothers disobeyed and stopped paddling, the fishing line broke and his brothers looked behind them and saw that Maui’s hook had caught and pulled up the Hawaiian islands archipelago!
Maui’s brothers were avid fishermen, and they poked fun at him because they thought that he could not fish. Every day they would go fishing without him. One day, he chastised them for not bringing
Many, many, moons ago, La (or the Sun) used to move irregularly, coming and going as it pleased. This made things challenging for the people tending to the Aina. Maui decided that he must do something about this to help the people. First he lifted the Heavens from the Aina, creating space for the plants to breath, and more room for humans to move around freely. He then used his own hair to create a lasso which he could fling out to capture La, the Sun, and influence its travels at a more leisurely pace. La was then in harmony with the people. Thus we have Maui to thank for our regular and extended daily sunshine!
Wherever we are as we read this, let us give thanks to our beloved friend MAUI.

Kumu Kahua’s Drama Ua Pau Set For July 27-28
Maui Arts & Cultural Center presents the Kumu Kahua Theatre (KKT) production of Alani Apio’s drama, Ua Pau. Performances are in the MACC’s McCoy Studio Theater at 7:30 pm Saturday, July 27 and at 2:00 pm Sunday, July 28. Tickets go on sale at 10:00 am Tuesday, June 25 online only at MauiArts.org.
In Ua Pau, past and present collide as Stevie returns home from college and uncovers hidden truths about her family. Devastated, she begins to experience and unravel the inter-generational trauma that haunts them all. Her struggle to release old ghosts and claim her place – and her kuleana – will determine whether she and her ’ohana survive intact,
or at all. Playwright Alani Apio grew up in Pu‘uloa – also known as ‘Ewa Beach – in a family of fishermen. He graduated from Kamehameha Schools and the UHM, with a degree in Drama and Theatre. He currently resides in Kailua.
Apio is a noted Hawaiian playwright, sculptor, and actor. His plays Kāmau and its sequels Kāmau A’e and Ua Pau tackle
complex issues related to Hawaiian identity and family relationships.
He’s a founding and current board member of Hui Aloha (huialoha.org), an organization dedicated to bringing houseless and housed people together to create solutions to homelessness. He also works as a community consultant for companies on sustainability projects and projects that have potential Native Hawaiian burial issues. The play has been directed by KKT Artistic Director Harry Wong III. Based in Honolulu, Kumu Kahua Theatre’s mission is to present plays about life in Hawai´i, by Hawai´i playwrights, for Hawai´i’s people.
Under Managing Director Donna Blanchard and Artistic Director Harry Wong III, Kumu Kahua Theatre is the only theatre solely devoted to theatre specific of place in the islands.
Kumu Kahua has been staging Hawai‘i themed projects by island writers since the 1970s, at the outset of the Hawaiian cultural renaissance and Maui Arts & Cultural Center has become the presenter of Kumu Kahua on Maui.
Tickets are $30, plus applicable fees. MACC members receive a ten percent discount. Tickets are available online only at MauiArts.org. Due to some of the play’s content, it is not suitable for all ages.
Wing Foiling Takes Maui By Storm
By Taryn Kama
Wing foiling, an exhilarating blend of surfing, windsurfing, and kiteboarding, is rapidly becoming the go-to water sport on Maui, attracting enthusiasts from around the world. With its consistent trade winds and vibrant water sports culture, Maui is now a premier destination for this thrilling activity.
Maui’s consistent trade winds provide the perfect conditions for exciting wing foiling adventures. Popular spots such as Kanaha Beach Park, located on Maui’s north shore or the Kahului Harbor offer expansive beaches and often steady winds, ideal for honing skills and pushing boundaries. The picturesque coastlines and vibrant water sports culture make Maui a hotspot for wing foiling enthusiasts.
Stefano Maffini, a wing foiler and longtime windsurfer, has witnessed the sport’s rapid growth.
“It’s been growing so much in the last three or four years,” he said. “It’s attracting a lot of new people because it’s a sport that is very fun—even in flat water and light wind conditions,” he said, “Now, you can see full families wing foiling together. People who have never done watersports before can do it—that’s why it’s become so popular.”
Maffini recommends taking lessons to learn more about wind direction, safety, and to gain more confidence in the water.
Maui’s local wing foiling community is also thriving. The sport presents an opportunity to connect with a like-minded community of water sports enthusiasts. Spending time at Kanaha Beach Park and participating in local events provide avenues for riders to showcase their skills, learn from others, and foster a sense of camaraderie within the wing foiling community.
Beyond its physical and social benefits, wing foiling on Maui is accessible to all ages and skill levels.
Environmental sustainability is another angle. Wing foiling is relatively low-impact compared to other motorized water sports. This aspect aligns well with Maui’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty and promoting eco-friendly activities.
Maui’s local businesses have responded to the growing demand by offering specialized equipment rentals and dedicated wing foiling shops, making it easier than ever to dive into this exciting sport.
As wing foiling gains traction as one of the most exciting water sports worldwide, Maui’s idyllic conditions make it a sought-after destination for wing foilers of all levels. Whether you’re looking to master new tricks or simply enjoy the sensation of gliding over the water, wing foiling on Maui promises an experience that is both exhilarating and deeply rewarding.
With its unique blend of physical challenge, environmental consciousness, and community spirit, wing foiling on Maui is more than just a sport—it’s a way to connect with nature and like-minded enthusiasts in one of the world’s most beautiful settings.

Students Focus on Science: STEM Day And Excite Camp
By Cindy Schumacher
Before summer break, Maui Economic Development Board (MEDB) STEMworks™ team members and local STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) experts traveled to Moloka’i to lead STEM Day activities for Kaunakakai Elementary School and Moloka’i Middle School students.
The event occupied an entire school day, with hands-on activities utilizing a wide variety of technology tools. In total, 126 students participated.
In a session on artificial intelligence (AI), led by AI consultant and e-sports coach Gabrial Yanagihara, students learned how to use AI to design their own books and generate images using original story ideas. Anna Sikkink, the STEMworks computer science specialist, led a session using virtual reality (VR) headsets to teach students about astronomy and Hawai’ian history.
“This immersive experience puts students on board the sailing canoe Hōkūle’a under a clear night sky,” Sikkink explained.
“They can highlight constellations and the Hawai’ian starlines; observing how the stars rise
and set relative to the Hawai’ian star compass.” More information about the Kilo Hōkū VR application used during the activity can be found at kilohokuvr.com.
Joseph Abraham, a Maui-based game developer and artist, introduced the students to the basics of game design. They were able to design videogames of their own using RPG Maker. Computer programming was also covered by Daniel Valente, an IT specialist and computer programmer with UHMC.
A student noted, “I learned the basics of coding using a free online program and Scratch.MIT.edu, which can be used to create animations and games. I learned so much today!”
Another session, led by Cassandra Saranillio, the stroke program manager with Maui Health, taught students to recognize the signs of a stroke using 3D pens to visualize the anatomy of the brain. Saranillio also helped the students memorize the signs of stroke using the acronym, BEFAST: Balance issues, Eyesight issues, Facial drooping, Arm weakness, Slurred speech, and Time to call 911. STEMworks also offers free afterschool STEM programs to middle school students across Maui County, including Moloka’i Middle School.
20th ANNUAL EXCITE CAMP
On Maui for its 20th year, the MEDB STEMworks Excite Camp program recently wrapped up four days of student activities. The day camp, which started in 2000 and focuses on the intersection of STEM and Hawai’ian knowledge and culture, welcomed middle school girls this year from across Maui County, including students from Hāna, Moloka’i, and Lāna’i.
The free summer program aims to support and inspire young women, especially those of Native Hawai’ian and Pacific Islander descent, to
pursue post-secondary education and careers in STEM while staying connected to Hawai’i.
Lalaine Pasion, the Excite Camp program manager, shared, “Since its inception, Excite Camp has evolved tremendously. This year, we’ve expanded the days and hours, with new sessions and diverse speakers. Teaching STEM skills while incorporating Hawai’ian values ensures our activities reflect and respect our culture.”
Field trips are central to Excite Camp’s mission to engage girls in STEM through placebased activities. The campers visited the summit of Haleakalā to honor the historic site and learn from aerospace professionals about astronomy and telescope technology. This year’s camp was the first to also include a day trip to Hāna. The students made ho’okupu and learned oli to prepare for both site visits.
Zoe Mai Zane, Maui High School student mentoring at Excite Camp, said, “Being a woman in STEM and being able to have equal opportunities to pursue and thrive in STEM careers is important to me.” Sienna Jolie Raccoma, another Maui High student, added, “I’ve been in STEM for seven years and it has forever changed my life.”
In addition to Excite Camp, STEMworks uses the real-world expertise of STEM and Hawai’ian culture professionals to enhance its STEMworks AFTERschool program, the annual Hawai’i STEM Conference, and numerous career awareness field trips, such as Agriculture Field Day and Healthcare Exploration Day.
For its paid internship programs, STEMworks partners with businesses across the state to place over 100 high school and early college students in project-based internships every year. Outdoor Adventures
Nature Talks
By Enrique Diaz
Through the clouds, oceans, forests, waterfalls, animals, its landscapes of shapes, colors, textures and scents ….nature is always connecting with us waiting for our response. Nature Talk is recognizing the subtle messages given to us by nature and our ability to receive from it messages for energy, joy and healing to name a few. It is similar to Ecology the study of the relationships between living organisms and their environment.“
Nature is always helping us through all forms with its Ebb & Flow but humanity is slowly losing its natural instincts due to over external stimulation of cell phones and technology. However, here on Maui connecting to nature is easy though I never realized how much deeper my connection would become when in 2015 I started Soulvoyage Adventures offering Outdoor Spiritual Explorations.
The ancient Hawaiians knew the importance of connecting with Nature. One example is the practice of HUNA a shamanistic tradition that recognizes the 7 Elemental Powers that can be tapped and the connection of each one to a Hawaiian Goddess. Another example is OLI or chanting that was used before European & Western contact to pass down stories of history and myth from generation to generation through song, hula and also before a ritual like Lomi Lomi massage or entering a sacred place.
Basically, these elements run in our DNA for example:
- Air: is the breath we take & inspires.
- Fire: represents the passion that drives us & energizes.
- Earth: is grounding like the trees & practical.
- Water: flows through us limitless & cleanses.
- Space: moves in the night sky & illuminates.

A few months ago after leading an exploration here on Maui, I had a client share with me the healing experience they had. This client visited this site years back on their own which resulted with a trauma putting their creative career on hold.
The client was hesitant to revisit this site again but felt safe with my guidance when signing up for the exploration. During the session they felt a sense of connection, peace, reverence and healing for this location. This experience with nature rekindled their creative spirit allowing them to get their creative career back on track.
It is important to consider that taking nature lightly without respect is not wise; therefore with an open heart, understanding and study of nature’s behavior one can decipher the deeper meaning of its messages.
For example, through my study of turtles I know they have a long life span due to their slow breathing and pace. Here on Maui the sea turtles are abundant and on one day while observing the ocean to relax, I saw sets of three different sea turtles surface out the water for air; this was my clue to slow down and breathe in the moment
Also, during hikes I see heart shape rocks of all sizes which to me at that moment is nature telling me to get out of my head in go into my heart’s desires, these are few examples of my experience with nature as I pay attention to its messages.
At Soulvoyage Adventures my passion is to help people experience nature in a holistic way with Outdoor Spiritual Explorations. These adventurous, heart opening and mind-expanding explorations assist in the healing and transformation of the mind, body and spirit. For more info. visit: soulvoyageadventures.com.
Using Technology To Capture The Love Of Your Life: Expert Tips
By George Gordon
So you met a nice Russian model on a singles website and after two messages you decide to get married. Working as a washing machine janitor at the Happy Valley laundromat you want to impress her with a photo of yourself standing in front of your house.
Making a fast decision, you download a picture of Mar-a-Lago. Now you have to figure out how to paste your photo standing at the front door and at the same time hiding Malania looking out the bathroom window.
I’m gonna show you how to open up the photo of yourself standing next to a garbage can of Tide Soap boxes and capture only you in it then paste it onto the photo of Mar-a-Lago.
So open up photos, choose your garbage can photo and right click on the image and a menu pops up. Choose “Copy Subject”. The subject is outlined. Ok, now open up your Mar-a-Lago photo where you want to place your picture. Right click on” Image” and on the top of the page choose “Edit With”. A menu pops up with all kinds of apps to choose from but just choose “Preview.” A new Preview screen shows up with Mar a Logo and now click on “Edit” at the top and choose “Paste”. Your photo shows up so position it at the front door of Mar a Logo. Finally Click on “Edit” and click on “Save”. Now go ahead and hit the Waikapu pawn shop and buy a used KAY JEWELRY fake diamond ring. You can use this technique of pasting images for many embarrasing situations like pasting your new girlfriend over your old one. Have fun with it. Remember that I repair computers and you can contact me at 808280-5055 or mauimist@aol.com.

Breakthrough Noninvasive Brain Therapy Now Available in Maui, Hawaii
Brain Waves Maui is offering PrTMS (personalized repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation) to those seeking more for their mental health and overall brain health.
PrTMS utilizes an external noninvasive, drug free, magnetic device to realign neuronal electrical conduction to restore neuronal synchronicity. PrTMS addresses a variety of psychiatric and neurological conditions such as depression, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorders, insomnia, concussion, and many other conditions.
The goal is to restore neuronal harmony in all areas of the brain, leading to a much healthier brain and reduction of a variety of mild to severe symptoms and improve overall brain performance. PrTMS has the significant advantage of utilizing in office painless qEEG (“brain mapping”) to measure the state of neuronal alignment in 19 different regions of the brain. The qEEG and other clinical information are used to guide the delivery of low grade electromagnetic impulses, customized to each individual, specific to each patient’s unique brain wave patterns.
