Ego, Essence, Enneagram
By Mark Sheehan For thousands of years, masters of wisdom have been unraveling the ego and charting a path to enlightenment. The “path” involves techniques for stilling the mind, becoming present, and freeing the self from the tyranny of the ego. Among the more interesting tools for understanding how we get trapped by our conditioning, and uncovering how we can become free from it, is the enneagram. Used by the Sufis for centuries, it was introduced to the West by the enigmatic and stern taskmaster, G. I. Gurdjieff. One technique that came from that work was ‘self-remembering’ – maintaining a state of witness even while engaged in daily life. In the 1960s, Americans returned from travels to Japan and India touting the benefits of zen meditation, martial arts, and surrendering the ego to achieve states of bliss as exemplified by Hindu saints. These Eastern approaches were then merging with Western explorations in consciousness as innovators sought synthesis. In 1969, Claudio Naranjo, resident teacher at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, heard about the work of Oscar Ichazo in Chile. This psychologist claimed to have experienced LSD states of clarity from doing a new kind of work. A small advance team promptly set off to check out this phenomenon. They came back assuring their friends at Big Sur that Oscar was the real deal – that he could, in fact, induce amazing states of clarity that he claimed could be permanent if one did enough work in the right order. The hook was sunk. Oscar agreed to accept students, but the terms were daunting: ten months of intensive work to test and prove his system. Soon, an eager group (mostly from California)
had formed and waited for word from ‘the master.’ Confirmation came in a cryptic telegram: “There is a fool, full of love, in the desert, waiting.” They started packing their bags. In the summer of 1970, fifty seekers arrived in Arica, Chile to start a demanding routine involving martial arts, mountain climbing, desert isolation, group clearings, Sufi meditations, and dozens of group and individual exercises drawn from many traditions. One of those students was the LSD and dolphin researcher, John Lilly, who left the group after four months to share his experience of Oscar and his teachings. When The Center of the Cyclone came out in January 1971, it was snatched up by people who had been tantalized by the early reports. I was one of them. Within two months I was in the first three-month training in San Francisco. It was a far cry from the academic life I had prepared for. This was a turning point in my life. No description of the exercises we did could explain the transformation that took place in me. It was a profound and permanent upgrade to my sense of self, my vitality, and my view of the world and my role in it. And I saw equally amazing changes in the 63 others who completed that training.
Not long after that, I left a dream job in higher education research at U.C. Berkeley to join the Arica Hawaii teaching team. Our first 40-day training was held at Seabury Hall in 1973. The ‘before and after’ photos of our 15 brave trainees reflected the deep inner changes that took place in each of them. How did the system effect such transformations? At the core of the trainings was a process of recalling and releasing the past, which involved not only remembering traumatic incidents, but also exploring what you were taught about love, sex, power, money, authority and religion. Many exercises shaved some of the edges off the ego while other techniques connected trainees to the current of love that flows through humanity. It was amazing and wonderful work that lit up the students and teachers. The Arica system can be explained by understanding key enneagrams, or nine-pointed graphs that deal with key elements of the structure of our psyche. A fuller description will be given in a future article. In the last issue of Maui Vision Magazine, due to editing errors, my article mistakenly understated Oscar’s role as a “contributor to theories on the enneagram.” In fact, he developed the entire knowledge base of the enneagram more than 40 years ago. As a small business owner for many years, I can certainly tell you there are a lot of benefits to owning your own enterprise. You set your own hours (which often become unlimited hours when you first start out), do everything yourself in the beginning to save expenses, and then at the end of a lot of work and investment, count your blessings when you start operating in the black. Extra blessings come from repeat customers who have benefited from your expertise and tell others. From my perspective, if you create a product or service of intrinsic value to others, and give your customers a lot more than what they are actually paying for, both they and you prosper and thrive from the interaction. Small businesses can and do grow from garage to gargantuan; look at Apple Computer! But I can tell you from experience, bigger isn’t always better. Mirror, Mirror
By Jenny Shaw In relationships, we human beings have a tendency to pretend we are not human beings. We are so afraid to be vulnerable that our coping vices range from smoking an insane amount of cigarettes to starving ourselves, overdosing and moving from one man or woman to another. Many come to me consumed with anger so large that I have to invest in a larger door just to guide them into my office. Some make it to my chair by the Grace of God, as they are so engulfed in shame, guilt and self-loathing. Precious angels, let me clear this up as best I can. You are human beings first and foremost. You are not responsible for another’s health, wellbeing, authentic happiness, prosperity or identity. You were not placed on this earth to fulfill everyone else’s dreams, goals, fantasies or worth. It’s not your job, nor your business, to stop your own oxygen flow in order to give that air to another person. You are amazing! You are worthy. You were perfectly designed and gifted your own life to live fully and authentically. The only relationship you need to commit to is the one you have been running from. If you want answers to your pain and angst, simply find your closest mirror and look directly into the reflection before you. Embrace the soul-being you see so beautifully and patiently. Smile openly, lovingly and vulnerably. Honor that being. If you honor your whole self as is, embrace all of your precious pieces, reside in your God gifted nakedness, celebrate the indescribable power of vulnerability, then, and only then, will you find loving safety in another. Remembering God Is My Employer
By Liah Howard Every person who starts his or her own small business wishes for success. Many factors take a person from the initial vision of a thriving business, to the reality of actually having a prospering business. We all know restaurants, health practitioners and stores that have had incredible grand openings only to close their doors a short 12 months later. While on the other hand, some businesses flourish as soon as they open their doors despite all odds with the economy, location or popularity of their product. Let’s look at some of the elements at play that distinguish a fruitful business from a struggling one. Baba Hari Dass, a wise spiritual teacher from India, illustrates an often overlooked component of business success. Babaji, as he is affectionately called, used to share a story about two shop owners who both opened their stores on opposite corners at the same time, selling identical merchandise. Both shops offered good service and were equal in accessibility. One of the shopkeepers became very prosperous and blossomed while the other shopkeeper constantly wrestled with keeping his doors open. Babaji explained that their success was based not only on their present circumstances, but also on their past karma. You see, the struggling shopkeeper had been pompous, arrogant and self-centered in a prior lifetime and misused his money for selfish means. He needed to learn humility this time around. The well-to-do shopkeeper, although quite poor in his past life, had been very humble and generous with what little he had, but he kept love foremost in his
heart. The moral of this story is that sometimes, no matter how hard one tries to be successful, it is simply not in the cards in this lifetime. Our souls may have a different plan. Rather than feeling discouraged if your business is not thriving, consider instead that success can be measured in many different ways. The bottom line is that our souls are always trying to encourage us to live the highest vision of ourselves in this world. This may include affluence or it may not.

From the soul’s perspective, true wealth is a loving state of being rather than big bucks in a bank account. A person who is happy, healthy and inspired is richer than a person who is sad, unhealthy and negative. Our higher selves want us to live a life of integrity, love and faith, and to model these characteristics in all our affairs, including business. These qualities, when used as yardsticks of success, reflect a much deeper connection to the wealth of the universe. When one sits in meditation and feels peace despite the fact that their business is floundering, they have found true freedom. Their happiness is not dependent on the external reality; rather, it comes from their inner divine connection. This inner bonding with the soul is the most powerful tool in being successful. When one is attuned to their inner voice, they are guided to the most perfect situations and circumstances for their expansion. Often there is a sense of grace or ease that comes when one knows they have done everything possible – they have done the groundwork for getting their business going and then they hand it over to the universe to manage. I once heard a fellow say, “God is my employer.” When I remember this, I can then trust and let go, knowing the business comes at the right time. By Rainya Dann Barbara Walters interviewed multi-billionaire Bill Gates and asked him, “Now that you’re the richest man in the world and you can have anything you desire, what more could you possibly want?” Gates replied, “To never stop changing. Whatever I do today, will be considered history tomorrow. I have to make sure that I never stop changing, and that I am always creating.” How can you set yourself on a path to create profit? A first key is to have a clear vision about a goal. Goals are energetic attractors. Envision yourself doing the thing you want. One famous saying of the Buddha is, “all that we are is the result of what we have thought.” A second powerful key is to set your intent. ‘Intent’ comes from the Latin ‘intendo,’ which means to ‘stretch forward.’ Say the sentence, “I wish I could go to my car.” Now say, “I intend to go to my car.” Notice how ‘intending’ is more empowering than ‘wishing.’ A third key is to gain closure in all areas of your life by clearing up past unresolved issues. You may be holding onto issues with people, places or things that create feelings of anger, betrayal, jealousy or other negative emotions. First acknowledge what you feel and honor it; then consciously say, “I choose to let it go.” Be mindful of your thoughts and feelings. Your thoughts create your reality. An easy self-hypnosis exercise for whenever you catch yourself having a negative thought is to say, “Delete.” Then say, “I choose, trust and know _____,” while visualizing what you do want. You will be amazed at the creativity and profit you attract into your life!

We all want to make personal connections, to be heard and understood. We crave that as individuals. When you ask me a question and I answer, how do I know if you heard me clearly or comprehended what I said? Although our days are filled with conversations and discussions about countless subjects, I wonder how much real communication is transpiring. In our age of non-stop contact, are we talking more but connecting less? If so, we can solve this problem and experience quality communication by choosing to enter a “conscious listening zone,” where we focus on the other person and enable them to express themselves without interruption. Relax your thoughts as the conversation begins to unfold. Clear your mind and connect deeply with your heart by allowing yourself to be open. Take time to detach from distractions and look into the other person’s eyes as they speak. Let yourself feel their words and recognize the emotion within them. Be aware of your personal filters and preconceived ideas by staying neutral and nonjudgmental, as we tend to hear what we want to hear. Practice listening without thinking ahead to what your next comment will be. Create space for others and their thoughts by pausing after what has been stated; allow their words to hang in the air before responding. Finally, repeat back what you believe you heard to minimize or avoid possible misunderstandings. While conscious listening with heart may not come naturally, and requires more energy and greater effort, the rewards make the challenge worthwhile.
Do We Really Need To Juice Cleanse?
By Craig King We all get a little off-track occasionally, and sometimes we need a plan laid out before us to get started again. This is often when people turn to juice cleansing to “detox.” But what does this actually mean? There is a lot of misunderstanding around the subject of detox. The truth is, we don’t know everything. We are living in an unprecedented time on the planet in terms of toxins. Our bodies are amazing, designed to deal with toxins on a regular basis. In theory, we shouldn’t need to do anything special. Our bodies have the wisdom to filter out toxins effectively. However, at no time in our history has there been a period like this with such extreme amounts of toxic influences. Our bodies offer us very personal feedback on how they are doing. When we feel tired, our bodies are telling us to rest. When we have problems digesting food, we are likely putting in foods that do not serve us. The list goes on. Diabetes, heart disease and cancer on many levels can be extreme levels of discord. Over time, not listening to how we feel and covering up symptoms with a band-aid approach will lead to problems down the road. This is when doing a juice cleanse enables our bodies to rest, nourish and reset. Our bodies find it easy to absorb nutrient dense juices that do not burden our systems to digest. (About 10 percent of the calories you consume – approximately 200 calories a day – will be expended on digesting, absorbing, metabolizing and eliminating food.) Nutrient dense juices and broths boost the activity of vital enzymes and nourish the body’s most important detoxifying organs – the liver, lungs, kidneys and colon – so they can do their jobs better and more efficiently. But juice cleansing needs to be done in an honoring and safe way. Not eating anything for days at a time in the hope to “cleanse” one’s body is a very extreme and sometimes dangerous road to achieving health. During a juice cleanse you can focus on getting an abundance of essential macronutrients, micronutrients and phytonutrients, enabling your body to recover from the onslaught of processed and allergy inducing foods. He then knew he was hooked and addicted, that he loved restoring and transforming properties, especially historic ones. Sharing his talents with others, he co-founded the Los Angeles-based architecture and design firm, TempleHome. Maui entered the picture as he and his partner at the time were seeking to purchase a retirement property here. One day they came across a listing for the present campus of Lumeria. “I had no idea I wanted to do this, or even move here. Spending time on the land, I saw what it could become.” He says the property spoke to him and “revealed what it wanted to be.” Navigating numerous zoning, renovation, financial and construction roadblocks, Xorin pressed on to create the magnificent environment Lumeria is today. The site boasts 24 elegant and individually appointed guestrooms and suites, delightful meeting rooms, workshop/yoga spaces, meditation gardens, pool, spa, restaurant, and an array of inspiring programs. What kept him going? He admits, “There’s a part of me that is a little relentless. I felt there was a calling, I was meant to do this. Conscious Life = Conscious Business By Maribeth Theisen The consciousness you bring to life is what you bring to your business. If you are having a happy and joyful day, it will be reflected in your smile, cheerful words and sunny disposition. The energy you project will be reflected back to you as people are drawn to you and respond positively. Similarly, others sense and are drawn to your choice to give each interaction your very best: prompt phone calls, convenient hours, quality products, informed expertise and a professional attitude. What happens when we are tired, stressed, grieving or worried, and we don’t feel upbeat or responsible? Recovering From Fake Friendship By Paul O’Brien Friendships usually begin by meeting someone at work or school or in a social group. You are open to new people, discover that you have something in common with some of them and decide to enhance the experience of common interests with the spice of good companionship. Shared interests and experiences become the basis for genuine friendship wherein both parties come to understand and care about each other over time. There’s a difference between developing such tried-and-true friendship and the acquisition of friends via social media, which, by appropriating the term “friends,” has actually cheapened the whole concept of friendship. Despite claims that social media is helping us be more connected more of the time, all too often we’re not really feeling it. Why not? Because like reality TV, it’s not quite real. “Friends” who are too easy to get can’t be counted on to provide support, share experiences or communicate on a heart level. Having hundreds of so-called friends on a site like Facebook – which can be a lot like a staged popularity contest – is no substitute for the real deal. Some interesting phenomena go along with the general demeaning of friendship. As Sherry Turkle points out in her book Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other, ours is rapidly becoming a “performance-based” culture, where image is everything and self-expression is a performance for attention from others. She explains how it is that so many young people refuse to have live conversations because texting is a performance they can better control. A disheartening aspect of modern friendship is how ready people can be to ‘go dark’ after a broken agreement or even just an argument. They
feel no compunction about cutting another person off rather than resolving things for the sake of clarity or the salve of closure that can preserve the memory of warm feelings. Understanding brings freedom from blame, including blaming oneself for expecting anything. This is happening more in all kinds of relationships, including between friends who had some falling out. A ready willingness to go radio silent is the dark side of a narcissistic trend where people find it easy to ostracize each other. Abandonment is more convenient than dealing with awkward feelings… and the world becomes a colder place. Trust is vital and precious. If there is such a thing as emotional security, it depends on trusting and trustworthiness. Fake friendships and ‘going dark’ damage people’s ability to trust. Empathy is the capacity to read the emotions of another. You must have empathy to experience sympathy or compassion, to ‘be there’ emotionally, to trust the other. It is a pity to live in such a shallow society just as it is a heroic challenge to serve as an empathic antidote. Oxytocin, the bonding hormone, helps and we can increase it to the benefit of friendship. Studies demonstrate oxytocin’s role in social recognition, pair bonding, orgasm and motherhood. Personality-wise, oxytocin promotes empathy and altruism. It’s good for the tribe, it’s good for civilization. In both sexes, oxytocin rises instantly with a single touch. (Its power is more abundantly available to and through women because of how it synergizes with estrogen, whereas testosterone counteracts it.) Generate as much oxytocin as you can. The food Farmacy is serving up is not only good for you, it really makes you feel good. And that’s what medicine is supposed to do – make you feel better. This former shave ice spot has recently been transformed into an organic oasis of delicious vegetarian cuisine. Having opened their doors at the end of June, Farmacy’s four co-owners knew what Mauians were hungry for – fresh, local, non-GMO ingredients that satisfy your taste buds, and customer service that’s delivered with the true spirit of aloha. With four friendly staff chopping, blending and mixing away in the open kitchen, and a front counter gal named Tuesday who doesn’t get frustrated no matter how long the line gets, this take-away café is a model for how all island businesses should be – friendly, fun and focused on a customer’s overall experience. Because everything is made to order, there’s a longer than average wait time, but it’s so worth it. Juices and smoothies made with Kula cane juice are supersized (a 20 oz cup or a 32 oz jar) because they’re so tasty. They offer hot bowls and soups, sandwiches, salads and acai bowls; they’re all farm to fork goodness. The Pono Bowl layered with quinoa, the day’s soup, kale salad, garlic cashew dressing, feta cheese and spiced popcorn tofu were incredible. I’m still wondering how they made that tofu taste so darn good. The prices are reasonable and the portions…well, you’ll want them to be bigger because after you’ve tasted their food, you’ll be left wanting more. Get yourself to Farmacy immediately. Courage Is Required
By Lavenda Schaff Being tied down to a lifestyle of materialism, but intuitively feeling called into a different direction, can be depressing and scary. Taking steps to align with and move towards your passion often seems unrealistic. It requires courage, and it also might require leaving your familiar environment and stepping outside of the norm. Leaving Germany 21 years ago was easy because I knew I wanted to live in Hawai’i amongst people who spark my heart and spirit the most. I disregarded the risks of not having health insurance, a retirement plan or legal security. I recently became professionally affiliated with a cultural wellness center in Wailuku, joining with some of my most beloved Hawaiian friends. It’s the greatest gift that has come from following my passion to live here! I recently saw a 74-year-old man named Frank Dmitri on the television show “America’s Got Talent.” He sang a Frank Sinatra song like a professional entertainer. Frank auditioned to be on this television show despite his age. He knew this was his chance to show his talents. He dared, despite the risk that people may laugh at him. Who knows what fruits he will enjoy in the future from this incredible performance. Frank received incredible compliments from the professional jury. Asked why it took him so long to come forward with his gift, he replied his stuttering had been in the way all his life. He overcame that obstacle and sang himself into the hearts of millions of people. Once passion is found and a spark is ignited, it makes one ignore obstacles and challenges. Sometimes a childlike ignorance is required to dare and be the driving force to move forward. Towards A Utopian World
By Eliza Bassett During 1993, the slow moving outer planets Uranus and Neptune met up in three conjunctions in Capricorn. These planets can create a feeling amongst the population that Utopia is just around the corner, sometimes known as ‘Millennial Fever.’ Those born with this conjunction in their chart can hold a personal understanding of how they can make the world a better place to be. They blend arts, mechanics, science and disparate parts of the physical world to support their vision of a better world. This aspect can influence children born 5 to 10 years on either side of that year. Some call them Indigo or Crystal Children. While Mercury was retrograde in June, I realized how many are appearing with their youthful focus and practicing in various fields of interest. A few notable ones include Jack Andraka, who invented an inexpensive test for the early detection of pancreatic cancer; and Boyan Slat in the Netherlands, who invented The Ocean Cleanup Array to remove plastic from the world’s oceans. Young women are also presenting their ideas. Elif Bilgin invented a method for creating bio-plastic from banana peels, and Ann Makosinski created a flashlight that runs on the heat from our hands. In the world of music, there are the two brothers who form the EDM group Disclosure, and the singers Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran. Palmer Luckey, the inventor of Oculus Rift, the virtual reality headset, will be 22 years old in September. Kudos to all of these young people and others who are pursuing their passions to create a better world. Also, I offer my deep appreciation to their parents and other elders who saw their genius and supported them. May societies welcome all those yet to appear with their genius, and support the changes they offer to create a world of utopian grace. By Rich Ralston Many people come to me and ask me to help them discover their purpose on Earth. I help by tuning in to their high soul and listening to their reasons. The high soul is located behind the frontal lobes of the brain and in front of the pineal gland. It can move in and out of the aura at will. The answers vary depending on the person, because we each have unique karmic journeys that we’ve chosen to fulfill. Our interests and passions are related to our soul’s purpose on Earth. Sometimes emotions and limited thought patterns can prohibit us from expressing our passions. I help individuals free themselves of those emotions and patterns that get in the way, and I teach them how to manifest their desires. Once an individual is cleared of blockages, the process can begin for them to live in alignment with their soul’s purpose on Earth; this process involves creating new desires and ideas, and developing talents and gifts. So, who profits when someone is living their passion? The individual, of course; and so does everyone else, directly and indirectly. A person who lives their passion creates joy and positive energy. This uplifting energy inspires others to also follow their passions, which helps others to fulfill their life’s purpose. The individual who lives a meaningful and fulfilling life full of love, joy and peace also attracts profits. The law of attraction is based on the principle that the intention of the energy you put out returns to you in the same manner. If you emit joy, you will receive joy. So enjoy, but be careful how you use your passion.

Kedar shared an inspiring and powerful metaphor – that our challenge on Maui is one of the ‘village’ facing the terrors of ‘the dragon.’ No corporate names were necessary; we knew the daunting presence he referred to. The concept of the ‘heroes’ cultivating the courage, with cooperation from the ‘village,’ to slay the ‘dragon’ with ‘the sword of truth’ describes the SHAKA movement’s growing legions of spiritual activists. We are ‘crusaders’ of the 21st century. What an honor and privilege it is to be here now! I celebrate my karma daily – that I / we have manifested our ‘light work’ assignment here on magical Maui. This paradise is filled with irony; so many environmental issues affect the quality of life for many people here. This causes concern for Maui lovers and residents who are awakening to the kuleana that we all share. We each must make our unique contribution to the health and welfare of this precious island, and we have many options to choose from. Get educated and involved with just one issue and communicate your passion about it with neighbors. Work with a candidate. By Debbie Dehm I was fortunate these last few weeks to trade healings with a few healers in our Maui community who I hadn’t met before. It reminded me how important it is for us, as healers, to make sure we receive healing as well as give healing. One of my teachers told me that you should never give from an unfilled cup; you give from the energy or abundance that overflows from your full cup. We all have had times when we felt burnt out because we let our cup get too empty without replenishing ourselves. When we give from that place, we can start to feel resentment and we may even forget what our intentions are as healers. We forget our intention to be of service when we may not be making a good income from our work, or when we just don’t feel appreciated. I hope we all keep in mind our true intentions as we work and keep our cup full. Of course, sometimes our good intentions are not enough to fill our practice with clients, so to help the community out, I have changed my website (www.healingsforhealersonmaui.com) to give other healers an opportunity to advertise what they do and to experience what I do. Clairvoyant Seeing
By Laura Van Wagner A clairvoyant, using his or her inner vision, sees images that are not always present to the conscious mind. We all see images, but most of us have never stopped to explore what they really are. Have you ever closed your eyes to fall asleep and seen images floating through your mind? These are the images that a clairvoyant reads. So how does this relate to you? Are you clairvoyant? Answer the following questions and find out. 1) When the phone rings, sometimes do you know who it is before you answer it? 2) Do you sometimes know what people want before they ask for it? 3) Do you get a vibe about people before they even speak? 4) Do you get intuitively drawn to or repelled by certain places? By Lila Danielle “People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” – Simon Sinek In my twenties and thirties, I sold intangible services – gym memberships, weight loss plans, massage school curriculums, life coaching programs. As a salesperson, my job was to ask questions, perceive wants and offer solutions in order for a prospective buyer to make an informed decision. Clients didn’t buy what I sold them. They bought what they dreamed of – toned abs, a slimmer physique, a better job, a more satisfying life. But those aren’t the things they really bought. Behind every dream of ours – whether it’s a prestigious job that pays big bucks, a house with a huge backyard, a round-the-world ticket to travel, or a lifelong partner who loves us – is the reason why we want what we want and that’s what makes us buy. Gym memberships and toned abs are the what. To be and feel healthier is the why. As I’ve gotten older, why I do what I do has become far more important than what I do. When someone meets me for the first time and asks me the proverbial question, “What do you do?” I usually respond by saying what I like to do in my life in general rather than what I do to make money. I’d much prefer you to know me as a passionate person rather than a profitable one. Building A Loyal Clientele
By Bentley Kalaway and Keith Ranney In the best of all possible worlds, our Maui mom and pop businesses would have fiercely loyal customers, willing to go out of their way to support and participate in a thriving local economy. We could keep more of our hard earned dollars here, instead of lining mainland corporate pockets. Central to the Hawaiian culture is the willingness to share one’s spiritual essence (alo) with another via one’s breath (ha). Aloha expressed through commerce is makana, or a gift. Is there a way to combine the spirit of the gift economy with the ease and efficiency of a technology-driven economy? How can we level the playing field for Maui’s small business owner? What if we could bring local businesses together into a loyalty program that encouraged each business to enroll its own customers, where the customers would also be rewarded for enrolling their friends and family, thus benefiting everyone financially? Using the system, local shops could manage their customer relations with the high-tech tools that big corporations use. Healing For Eyes And Vision
By Sam Berne, O.D. Vision is a dynamic process that involves connecting our eyes, brain, body and psyche. Instead of focusing on pathology-based symptoms, I use a holistic model that addresses the causes of dis-ease. During my 29 years as a practicing optometrist, hundreds of people have successfully restored their eyesight and their visual fields, despite prognosis from traditional optometry that such results were unlikely or impossible. I recently treated a 58-year-old woman who suffered a growing blind spot in the optic nerve in her right eye. The specialists offered no answers regarding cause or treatment options. Hope For Tourette Syndrome
By Erin Elster, D.C. A new treatment focusing on cervical (neck) injuries, known as upper cervical chiropractic care, shows promise for patients with Tourette Syndrome (TS). According to medical research, TS is a brain disorder that is frequently linked to head and/or neck trauma. It is thought that trauma triggers abnormal nerve impulses and neurochemical (serotonin and dopamine) levels in the brainstem, which leads to the tic disorder. Symptoms include sudden, rapid movements (motor tics) or sounds (vocal tics) that are repeated over and over numerous times per day. Upper cervical chiropractic care works by correcting trauma-induced misalignments of the upper cervical vertebrae, thereby restoring normal brainstem function. The most common traumas that lead to TS onset include blows to the head, whiplash and/or concussion sustained as a result of motor vehicle accidents and falls, and through sports such as skiing, cycling, horseback riding, gymnastics and surfing, to name a few. Following trauma, tics can be triggered immediately, or they can take months or years to develop. Even in cases where a patient does not recall incidences of head trauma prior to his or her onset of tics, upper cervical misalignments may be found. To determine whether a patient may benefit from upper cervical treatment, two diagnostic tests of the cervical spine – thermal imaging and digital x-ray – are performed. After determining a diagnosis of cervical injury, each patient’s injured neck is corrected by administering a precise adjustment by hand on a specially-designed knee chest table. Many patients notice improvement in tics with just a few treatments. Tourette syndrome is a debilitating disorder that affects the quality of life of millions of people. The relationship between head trauma, tic onset and upper cervical treatment provides hope for these patients. Cleanse And Get Balanced!
By Samana Benedetti Recently, I taught a class about nutrition, detox and rejuvenating the body. These are my favorite subjects because they offer the most potential for transformation. As a group, we commit to a 30-day cleanse to start allowing the liver to lighten up; the colon gets cleaner and all the organs begin to release toxins into the bloodstream, which we eliminate through urine and waste. Soon, all of the bad stuff clogging the system is replaced with plenty of antioxidants and nutrients so that the body can function optimally. I will warn you newcomers about the initial drawbacks of starting a cleanse. During the first few days, you may experience fogginess, headaches, fatigue, and sometimes cravings for all the foods that caused the need for you to cleanse in the first place. Any cleanse where you don’t feel significantly better by the fifth day either is not right for you, or needs to be adjusted. A cleanse is not the same as a fast. When you cleanse, you still eat. You are re-programming the body to want healthy, healing foods. The benefits are that you begin to have more energy and desire less food at each meal. The weight drops and you feel inspired! Today, on day 4 of 30, my students reported that the taste of food is enhanced and preparing meals is joyous. They feel life has slowed down and they don’t have to react; they can allow things to just be. Many are already getting insights into their patterns and seeing with new perspectives. This kind of cleanse can also produce mental and emotional detox. Balance comes from attention to all parts of the whole.
