November was probably the best month of my life... what a great month for me. Full of competitions and lots of fun during the races. We spent four weeks in a row doing events and racing. I’ll start with the Brazil Slalom nationals in a nice place and good winds. Many competitors this year came from Brazil and also some international sailors. I won this event for the second time and I was very happy for that. I had some nice races there with my friends Wilhelm Shurmann and Alberto Menegatti. One week later we all went to the FW Grand-Prix in my city, Fortaleza. The wind was great and we had fifteen races. I was extremely tired after the event, but all the effort was good because I had my first title in a competition like that. It was good to race in my city with all the top sailors and celebrate the victory with my friends and family was even better. Now I’m relaxing a bit. I’m doing some stand up paddle, surf, wave sailing, running... It’s a good time of the year to be at home.

How fast do days go by? Damn, it’s almost the end of the year. I have been training as much as I can and spent the first days of the month on my 4.8 and 5.2 Loco’s. The sails are just amazing... so light and conformable that even when the wind gets strong they still handle nicely. I am sure that in the light days (5.2 or 5.6 wind wave conditions) these Loco’s will be working great. I consider them more like an all around freestyle and wave sail. This month I have been trying to get my focus to see what we can change for the 2011 Loco’s. I have been spending much of my time training on the water doing freestyle. It’s hard to make big changes but sometimes a small change can make a sail work better. I found some small things to make Barry and Art work to improve the sails to a new level, but I guess it’s never too early to come up with ideas... better early then late right..hihihihi. Overall I like these loco’s sails: 4.8 and 5.2 are the best so far.

I also went to Curacao for the 2009 Curacao Heineken Regatta. We had four races with steady 15-18 knots of wind, perfect wind for Formula sailing. The races were done on the open sea. I won three races and lost one because I rounded the upwind mark wrong. OOPS. There were all disciplines from Windsurfers, sunfishes, racing yachts, Catamaran, optimist and more, a big event and all well organised. On the 22nd of November we also had a local event called the Lion’s Club Race: the discipline was Slalom and freestyle. This day we had the best conditions of the month: 30 knots for the whole day. Four Slalom races in the morning andI was on my 6.6 and Isonic 86. It felt great to be doing slalom again after six months not being on slalom gear. I won all the slalom races but most of the other guys were also close behind me. Tthe speed of the other guys seems to be increasing, and that’s good too. Freestyle was done in the afternoon and was won by Kiri, and I placed second, Bjorn placed third.. Stupid of me of not going to the freestyle skipper’s meeting and I didn’t know they were judging by as many moves you can make. I kept the PWA judging in my head and only did my best four moves on both tacks while Kiri was just doing many moves. But it’s okay. Conditions were sick and I was on my 4.8 and Starboard Flare 88.. After the event the next day the wind got lighter so the 5.6 was the sail I used from then and until the end of November. I had a great month and I can’t complain. I am just putting my mind straight and focusing for next year and getting my body ready to do a good 2010 freestyle season. You will hear from me next month on that. Until then, have a great time sailing. Smile always because life is good.. hahahaha Taty Frans NB-9

shop

GONZO

For many years I had this idea of opening a shop at my windsurfing club. For one reason or another I never managed to accomplish this. But this year it was different, and everything seemed to be in line. I talked to my buddy, Raul Saubidet, who taught my family to windsurf 20 years ago, and is owner of the club which I belong to. He agreed to start this with me. So I spent all November organizing the physical place where it was gonna happene and we finally launched our shop, “ARG3”, these past days. It was a very hard task as I had to do a lot of stuff that I’ve never done… but it was a very cool experience. We sponsored the national championships last week and we had the opening during the event. We put a sail to raffle thanks to MauiSails and everything went very smooth… Best regards. Gonzalo Costa Hoevel ARG-3 http://arg3.com.ar

They have something called " Hawaii time". Here in Cabo Verde we have "ora do Cabo Verde" which basically means the same as Hawaii time, just a little slower. So although we’re half way through December, for me November is only ending now because I’m on "ora do cabo Verde"

CABO VERDE

My family and I and our team here at Angulo Cabo Verde have gotten most of the major fine tuning for our windsurf center and surfshop tuned up for the busier part of the season which starts now. As if all that wasn’t enough, Claudia and I are now opening a new retail in Praia, The capital of Cabo Verde. It’s been about 5 or 6 years that we’ve been looking in that direction, but recently one of the best retail locations fell into our hands, so sometimes opportunity comes at unexpected moments and you need to make your calculated decision and move forward.

Our Experience, Your Reward

I’ve personally been spending the majority of November in Praia, ripping out walls, old electrical etc. and replacing everything with a new look. The new store is coming along great and we are taking advantage of our time in Praia to plant seeds with the government and local businesses for implantation of a watersports school in Praia of Gamboa , the beach that sits at the heart of the capital. It’s a beach that’s perfect for beginner, freeride and slalom sailing, so I really look forward to planting a new sport in a society. My personal windsurfing has been on hold, but we did manage to squeeze in a couple days of close to double mast high barrels followed by some completely lunatic waveriding at maxed out little Ho’okipa. I continue to have my mind blown by the conditions here in Cabo Verde. As if all that hasn’t been enough, at Angulo boards we’ve been finalizing sales an shipping of our new Magnum line in order to make sure everything is up to par for PWA and IFCA registration. We’re also stoked to add team rider Kiani Kurosh from Denmark as well continuing to support young French racer Steve Laubaney. Here’s wishing you all a Merry Christmas with family and friends...... Until the new year dawns! Aloha, Josh Angulo CV-1

we are now finishing the designs for the TR-6

no.55. November ’09

With November over we are now finishing the designs for the TR-6. I’m just getting ready to head over to the factory in China to check on the final samples. We are very excited on the progress made on the TR-6 sails as we have improved on a number of key elements of performance. The new sails have improved stability and balance achieved by a slightly more locked-in lower profile in combination with a more progressive twist pattern all the way to the head of the sail. We have used a combination of luff and seam shape tuning together with some outline adjustments to achieve our performance goals.

The TR-6 sails feel very light and effortless on the water as the draft stays perfectly positioned while the leech of the sail consistently breaths and adjusts to every gust, allowing the rider to focus on their board trim and maximum speed. Most importantly, the TR-6 are blazing fast and are testing consistently faster than our previous efforts as well as the competition. On the water, November has been an epic wave sailing month with non stop swell and sideoffshore trade winds. We even had a rare combination of an extra-large NE swell together with very offshore ESE winds that turned certain North shore locations into epic point breaks. I had an amazing wave sailing session on this day as the offshore winds held the surf up well providing long, peeling vertical faces. It’s days like this when a real wave sail like the 5.0 Legend shines as it provides perfect release off the top making gusty offshore winds into smooth perfection. Maui is such a beautiful place that I always find it hard to leave, even for short periods of time. It’s especially hard to leave my 4 year old daughter and wifey. At least my daughter and I had some fun on the water this week with a good tandem surf session on the weekend and a little bit of Inspire, kid sail “testing” today. I put these sessions in my mental memory bank and they will help me through a week of grind in China. Aloha, Artur Szpunar

the best November for windsurfing in Europe in a long time

November has come around quick so it is the end of the year already. It was by far the best November for windsurfing in Europe in a long time, the weather has been very mild for the time of the year with lots of wind from the South. We’ve found some undiscovered Speed Sailing spots in Holland near ’Den Helder’ where there will be some records broken in the future, no doubt. I have stayed on stand-by but the conditions and tides never really came together for Speed. At least at the new spot ’Da Curve’ we finally have somewhere to sail with a bigger range of tides. For wave sailing it has been killer, there where some classic sunny & windy days at ’Wijk aan Zee’ - west of Amsterdam, working in southerlies. This is the spot where I always used to sail and train, back when only few of us guys where there. Great to see more then 200 people spread out along the coast with exceptional conditions riding clean and fun waves! Above all the atmosphere and buzz when it finally comes together on the weekend. The Legend Wave sails are just great, and trying some other sails confirmed the soft and lively feeling we have that really helps in a Wave sail.

When I arrived in South Africa, the summer’s just getting started and after taking a scenic drive down to Elands bay we scored long reeling left hand waves, no wind just surfing. The next days we were all over it, at good old sunset beach and an evening jumping session at Big Bay. Finally in the end of the month an early morning wave session at Scarborough in the Cape Point area and a Saturday night in town before connecting flights to West Australia. One quick week in the mother city and a taste for the soccer world championships which are taking place in SA in 2010. Check out my updated blog, please visit www.petervolwater. com. November has been great

This month we have seen lots of new protos and samples for the TR-6 and the work has been rewarding us with lots of improvement in both speed and range. Some of the changes are small, like the logical rounding of the clew area to reduce boom lengths about 5cm, and others are greater, like the change into more flexible materials to enhance the cam rotation while still allowing a tighter, smoother sleeve. Art really got that one right when he figured inserting the softer material would make it easier to get smooth assembly and function. We have been super happy to see young Gabriel Brown (BRA-50) win the Brazilian Slalom Championship and just recently, the Formula Grand Prix in Fortaleza. Gabriel had the lead in that event almost every day and in a grand fashion, on live National Television in Brazil, convincingly won the last two races (out of fifteen in good conditions) to keep the title with

a citizen. This event was attended by many other top competitors, including the current and former World Champions, and also saw Dennis Littel (NED 13) take a bullet in one round. Congrats to Gabriel. My afternoon project continues with bulkhead reattachment, furniture building, and further deconstruction/ construction of the galley/chart table area. A new cabin sole is in order before anything new gets built though. A view of the re-painted areas shows the ’new look’ with white and teak molding/ trim. The big event was getting Mom to smack a bottle of bubbly on the bow to make the renaming official. The boat is now called "Cornelia" in her honor and as recognition of her constant support and lively long life. At 94, she is still able to climb aboard over the bow pulpit and enjoy a day with friends in the cockpit of her namesake. Gotta love it. Aloha, Barry Spanier

MauiSails Boom Front End A good boom is much more than some carbon tubes. The key elements of the whole system are also the length adjustment locking parts, and the boom head that attaches to the mast. MauiSails frontend fits 37mm or 40mm diameter carbon tubes. Will fit most booms on the market. You can buy it in MauiSails online store at www.mauisails.com

chasing wind to finalize testing on the TR-6

Busy month chasing wind to finalize testing on the TR6. Most the real work has been completed for the TR6 and once again we have pushed to the last moment and made good progress on all aspects of the design and quality. A new look logo and mast sleeve, refinements of shape and twist to enhance speed and handling. It’s a never ending process but at some stage you have to say “we have achieved our goals for this race sail”, and send off the final designs for production. We will be registering sizes 4.3m to 10m for the PWA sail registration. The PWA has done a good job with the sail registration, all companies are complying and each year a few more companies join the PWA.

In the middle of November I took a trip to Australia. A little business and a little pleasure. I meet with one of our key dealers in Sydney, hoping to increase his business this year, as well as went Formula sailing on Sydney Harbour one afternoon. I also travelled cross country with my brother to a small country town called
