JULY IN GERMANY The July was a fabulous month for competition and freesailing. Windy summer are rare in our region and I can’ t remember to score such a good one in the past. All in all a balanced mixture of warm temperatures, wind and solid waves. I hope that it remains like this for a while. Hanstholm delivered again great conditions to improve your skills. Almost every weekend my friends and I drive to that lovely place to enjoy the playground. Check out some pictures of my last session.

Competition side, the conditions were great as well as already mentioned. At the Supremesurf Big Days in Weißenhaus our teammate Klaus Twilling was on fire and impressed the judges with a great performance in a really strong fleet. In the end Klaus managed it to reach the sixth place. I was not happy with the result. In my last heat against Moritz Mauch and Mick Kleingarn I could not find any ramps to jump and ended up on a ninth place. In Kühlungsborn, a contest as part of the GWA Tour, I jumped on the fifth place which is a good result for me. In both contests Leon Jamaer, Max Dröge and Moritz Mauch were the standout sailors and deserved the places on the podium. Great to see that meanwhile Doubles, Tweaked Pushloops and Takas are standard in German competitions. Holger Beer

MORE ABOUT THE BIGDAYS The BigDays is one of the most popular, if not the most popular, standby contest in Germany. The contest is only kicked off when the Forecast predicts wind speed at at least 30kts (or more). The format is simple, everybody can participate and nobody is set due to a rankinglist. That means amateurs can compete against pro-windsurfers from the first round on. In Germany there are a lot of unkonwn good windsurfers, mavericks, which are good for a rise to the podium. When the first people showed up at the beach in "Weissenhaus" the waves were not really promising. However, the atmosphere in the fleet was very good. Everybody was excited because the last event was held already 1,5 years ago. Within the first heats the waves and the wind started to show their potential and everybody was lucky to sail in proper "baltic sea" wave conditions. The Windspeed was good, about 35kts I guess, the Winddirection was a bit more westerly than you would like it in Weissenhaus. That made the conditions a bit gustier than ususal and I was pretty happy to sail on a five button 4.0qm MS Legend which felt pretty stable. I was powered up on the 4.0qm but I kept this choice in every heat while others were switching sails steadily. The Waves were in between 1,5 and 2,5 meters, the best sets were about Logo hight.

This year the organizers adopted the World Surf League (WSL) heat format. The winners of the first round heats directly advanced to the third round, while the second place advanced to the second round. Until the quarterfinals we started with four men per heat, from which the best two riders advanced to the next round. The Heats were about 8 min. long and judging criteria consisted of 2 Jumps and 1 Waveride. Holger and I fought our way to the quarterfinals, unfortunately my heat was re-sailed and I realised that too late. This cost me quite a lot energy so I was really suprised to hear that I advanced to the semifinal after the re-sail. The next heat was against Moritz Mauch but I couldn´t repeat the performance from the heats before. I couldn´t find good ramps for jumping and I knew Moritz favourite discipline was waveriding. My opponent made much more out of the conditions, he landed a wave three sixty, a goiter, a solid backy and a table forward. I was pretty impressed to see Moritz improving his level during every heat, actually he sailed really smart competitionwise. Good to see him on the podium at the end of the day - smart young talent!

Maui Monthly

The 2015 Ocean Jump is the 10th anniversary of this format. Windskater and BMXer jump over a ramp into the water and show their best airmoves. They choose a small harbour direcly in Kiel downtown, the North of Germany. There are competitions like championships and best trick ratings according to the motto "Windskater aggainst BMXer". Additionally there are nightshows with fireworks and laser effects, where up to 7000 spectators cheer and celebrate with. The ramp grows every year and is now 10m high with a 4,5m distance kicker edge and water surface. The windskater use small normal sails with a special skateboard. Meikel Thies from team MauiSails Germany took part of the event for his first time. "Every time I stand on the ramp, looking down to the kicker and in the crowd of spectators I felt a rush of adrenaline in my body." He reached the 5th place (2nd windskater)in the best-trick competition with a clean and very high delayed double Funnel. "It is really painful when you lost the control in 8m altitude andd it wrong on the smooth water surface." Meikel used the Legend sail in size 3,7qm to get a stable one with fast rotation.

NEWS FROM AUSTRALIA AUS747 - BYRON MCILVEEN

Our Experience, Your Reward

.25

I have just returned from racing slalom and GPS at the Australian titles at Green Island QLD. Wow what an experience one of the best weeks of my life. A bucket list thing ticked off. With clean warm waters and a paradise island and the best of the best windsurfers in Australia and some Professionals form oversees the scene was set. They set a 3 sail one board or 2 sails 2 board’s limit. I took my TR11 6.6m, TR11 7.7m, Exocet RS2 90l, Exocet RS4 111l, V max fins. Great combinations. I just love the new sails and masts there performance was excellent.

When we got 30 knots with the 6.6 and the RS2 that was heaven on a board. I recorded 36.6 knots during a slalom race in rough water showing what control the gear had. I sailed 6 days straight in winds from 20 to 25 and one day was to 30. I won the Australian GPS wining 3 out of the 4 races and a second. In the slalom I made every winners final. I went over in the first final to get a DNF. But was consistent and did not drop one jibe for the event. I managed to come 6th overall 1 point behind 5th it was just so close and just so much fun. Having a beer at night with all the sailors from around the country it was just a great vibe. I’ll be back. Byron Mcilveen

IN SUMMER, JUST HAVE FUN!

Our Experience, Your Reward

Around Paris, we have not the sea but we got ideas to navigate throughout the year at a lower cost and to practice our favorite sport. It’s called Kiff! The rule is very simple, just being a member of a free website: www. kiffmembers.fr . This is actually a carpooling website dedicated to windsurfing, which has been existing for many years.

Maui Monthly

When we can plan a beautiful session, a post is immediately published that outlines the conditions and suggests a meeting point. The place is often the same, a Mc Donald’s parking on the cross of the two main roads leading to the North Atlantic. Once there, we load up cars and trailers. Results, it is the insurance to pass a good time among friends, meet new people, have fun on the water, sharing the journey and save money. After the session, everyone does their small report to tell the session, share photos and videos. A short video taken in Le Crotoy, summarized the spirit of our last trips: https://vimeo.com/131412618

Maui Monthly

Summertime is the right period to organise carpooling for the nearest spots from Paris:Wissant, Le Crotoy, Berck-surMer, Le Touquet, Courseuilles ... The objective is first to sail together, out of the urban part and just have fun. We relax and avoid avoid getting worked up. In freeride, slalom or waves. With the latest equipment or old equipment, who cares, the main thing is to sail all together. It is also time (end of June - early July) for the 2nd largest French windsurfing event: Le Raid La Tranche-Ile de Ré. The spirit of this raid corresponds to the spirit of the Kiff, where pure slalom riders are alongside amateurs, whatever the material or wind. The event lasts three days and generally offers good thermal wind. This is often for some Kiff’s members, their first competition. It is always warmfriendly and it is quick to get caught up in the game. We don’t care about general results, the raid is a great opportunity to compete with friends, using our bigger sails and boards, hoping first of all a good start. The event is often broadcast on giant screens in the city and on TV news. Antoine Albeau, who comes from Ile de Ré, participated this year, once again, to the event. It also allows the public to discover windsurfing, especially since the arrival is performed on the beach! The summer has started well, we already had some good sailing conditions. To be continued during holidays in August… Xavier Le Saux – FRA 420

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SLALOM WINDSURFING SYLT With 76 male and 10 female riders it’s a big competition. I planned to aim for a top 40 position. The first 2 days the men had 3 eliminations and I’m in 29th position with a 20th, 31th and 37th score. The last is my discard and worst score because I got a mast on my nose from another competitor. The circumstances are again very challenging here at Sylt, high waves already at low wind conditions. So sailing with TRXI 8.4 and the 82 wide board in difficult 1.5m waves. The last days we only could wait for suitable circumstances but saidly no racing was possible. A fun event to participate in and also a great experience. Marco van der Leer www.facebook.com/ned207
