The recently completed Sylt PWA Grand Slam event got off to a great start for MauiSails with a huge performance in demanding conditions by Taty Frans taking a second in the Freestyle Single Elimination and then coming back to secure the Event Win with a double finals win against Kiri Thode. Highlighted in the victory was Taty’s superior speed, range and maneuverability of the 2010 Loco range of sails he was instrumental in developing with the MauiSails design team. A day of Slalom produced mixed results for the MauiSails Team except in Heat #1 of Race Series #3 where Angulo, Volwater and Costa Hoevel put their TR-5’s through their paces and finished 1, 2, 3! Demanding racing in the North Sea where simply getting off the beach challenged the world’s best sailors, Costa Hoevel qualified for 3 out of 4 Finals and earned a Top 10 finish. For the season Slalom rankings Volwater and Costa Hoevel earned Top 10 positions with Angulo very close behind.
Josh Angulo brought his spectacular wave riding form with him to Sylt and used the event to secure his second PWA Worldtour Wave Champion title with a Third Place finish providing plenty of points to stand alone at the top of the table. Fierce North Sea conditions produced spectacular performances and Josh knows how to deliver with the new 2010 Legends

Well, what can I say. The deal’s done, the fat lady has screamed acapella and in the fine words of a great wordsmith "Daffy Duck".... dadadada that’s all folks! The relief of having the tour end with a World Title in hand sure is relaxing. To be honest I would have been fine with a no wind event in Sylt and taken the easy route, but it wasnt to be. Instead we had one of the narliest events in history to decide the Wave World Title and I came out on top. Winning at a time when the "new school" is so highly heralded in the media makes the victory all that sweeter and the margin of victory was substantial for a 3 event tour. I’ve been around for quite some time and cut my teeth in the early days in first round heats against Bjorn, Robby, Kalama, Rush. I won events at 17 years old against the heroes of the day, Robby and Polakow and won my first world title in 2003 on a packed Sylt weekend in a do or die heat against Bjorn Dunkerbeck .

I’ve had epic battles with Kauli Seadi at the Notorious Ponta Preta and taken 2 out of 3 and have culminated this competitive wave career with a second world title in Sylt. At the moment the title was decided I was in my Sylt apartment with Claudia and Noah and as I watched the live-ticker, I felt it was about to happen so I set the stage with some cranking Christian worship music, Third Day on my computer and waited for the next ticker line which finally showed Klaas defeating Kauli and the World Title becoming mine. I danced and rejoiced with my family and even shed a few tears of joy. The realization of what just happened was awesome and the knowledge that the first ever Windsurf World Title for an African nation was certain was a huge blessing. I then headed to he beach, relaxed and all smiles, where I sailed probably the worst heat of my life to drop from 2nd to 3rd in the contest, but I was still happy as can be. Now as I write this, I thank God for the many good years. My family for the unconditional support and MauiSails for making the sailing side all possible, and a special thanks to all the readers, friends and windsurf enthusiasts who support us through your patronage and morale. We sure couldn’t do it without you. Obrigado, Josh Angulo CV-1

Kon ta: means: How is it? in Papiamentu. I have no idea how to begin regarding what I did this month. I remember I just wrote a month report, but for me it was like two weeks ago and then suddenly I receive an email from Phil asking for the September report. I was like. ’What is this??? How fast the days go by.’ Well I guess I have been really busy with my preparation for Sylt and working when there was no wind and sailing full power with Tonky and Kiri when the wind kicked in. We had wind for two weeks of the September month and mostly I was on my 5.2 and 4.8 Loco. These are my best sizes so far and I got really used to these sizes.
The 4.8 Loco is the sail i really would like to sail more. Whenever I feel a bit powered up with my 5.2 I grab my 4.8 Loco. Funny thing is that when I am on 4.8 and Tonky and Kiri are still with their 5.2 Echo I get more power and get going much earlier then them. The Locos are magic and they work really good in all conditions. The more I sail with them the more I fall in love with these sails. Tonky, Kiri, and I were really pushing each other on the water, and I mean literally training hard for the Sylt event. Kiri and I also put each week about 4 1/2 hours in the gym. I found it hard in the beginning but I am slowly getting there. Our fitness trainer really makes us work hard but I know it’s all for the best:).

Five days before I flew to Germany I spent an hour on the Formula gear, After I come back from Sylt I will be doing the Bonaire International Regatta, which is a big event in the Caribbean so I find that it is good and interesting to be part of it. I spent so little time on my gears but at least I have prepare a bit ;) Tonky, Kiri and I arrived on the 23rd in Hamburg and everything went smooth as silk with all our gear. We packed it in an organizer truck then got a taxi that dropped us at the Train Station. We met with Diony and were off to Westerland sylt on a three hour train ride. The third day was freestyle day. Sunday night I couldn’t sleep the whole night. It was frustrating because we had to be at the beach at 7o’clock for skipper’s meeting and here I am just trying to sleep... but my mind is busy figuring things out... Well Just when the sleepy moments came the alarm went on, I was like nooooooooooo, waking up I looked outside very windy and that cold morning breeze for the Caribbean boys is like brrrrrrr.. Walking down to the beach I felt very relaxed and comfortable. I had no pressure, funny feeling for me. But i was feeling pretty okay. My heats in the morning were sailed with my 5.2 loco and 98 liter Starboard Flare. I wasn’t looking forward to face Gollito because I knew he sails really good in Sylt, and I remember telling Tonky I know that I am going to lose and he looked at me and told me, ’DUDE DON"T LOSE FAITH, you are good, you can do it’. So that kinda hit and I came back in the heat and won. Tonky also won his heat against Brawzinho. I grabbed Tonky and we just hugged each other. i was very surprised and it felt good to win.

Then I went on beating my brother and got stopped by Kiri and finished second in the single. After the double got started, people tell me take your wetsuit off, you still have a long time before you do your heat. But I don’t like to take off and on the wet suit in these cold weather so I kept it on and just felt that I was warm and ready to go at anytime. When Gollito started winning and moved to take Tonky again in the double elemination, I watched the whole heat and somehow I felt that Tonky could win this. Six minutes passed and I was already out on the water waiting for my next opponent. On the beach I saw Tonky running to his gear and Kiri was congratulating him... I was like Wooooooo sick sick sick, Three Bonerians in the top and we are all family... woooooo yes!!! So to me that moment was like a relief and I just was so relaxed and confident. So I sailed my best to beat Tonky, then went against Kiri and beat him once I felt very good and surprised about it, then we had to re sail again because i have to beat him twice. When on the Podium and the announcer said that the winner is Taty Frans, in like one second Tonky grabbed me and lifted me. I was speechless for a moment. :) :) I just smile and smile.. I tell you at this moment when I am writing this down I still can not believe that I won. :) I am very happy with myself. Like Tonky and Brawzinho told me you deserve this, it’s been a longtime and you are sailing good and you did improve so much after Fuerteventura. Note: the sail I used was the 2010 4.8 Loco and the 2010 flare 88 with a 2010 choco fin Taty Frans models 15 cm

That was just a great year for me! From the beginning I felt it will be a good one:) I start my season in February, doing some RS:X Olympic Class training and racing till April when I got my Formula gear delivery. As RS:X is the best physical preparation for all windsurfing disciplines it was just a matter of setting up my new TR-5 and Starboard 161. Like always I trained a lot with my brother Pawel who helped me to feel comfortable on

my equipment, and also with Sarah Hebert sparing for one month. I was quite stressed this year about defending my titles so I trained a lot and hard to feel strong in my mind. And all went great... First I got Polish FW Champion next I won FW Europeans and last fight was for the Worlds title which I won just with the last race so I’m even more happy about that.

Moreover this year I’m very happy about my Slalom performance. 3rd place in Costa Brava gave me a lot of confidence and made me believe I can fight for first place in PWA Slalom soon. At the very end of competition season I had one more important event to do. Polish RS:X Olympic Class Nationals which took place in Leba this year. Strong wind and quite big waves were just perfect conditions as it feels like easy to ride with 8,5 sail instead of 11m.

Summer turning to autumn and the usually windy September is normally my favorite month back in good old Holland. I was injured bruising my ribs crashing hard on a sand bank speed sailing. While not having had any injuries for a long time it’s good to be trained and fit. Six days after the crash I took it to the water again in flat water on the IJsselmeer close to my home. With a steady NE flow we sailed almost every day and to come prepared for the last PWA event of the season I ended up doing a lot of bike riding to train fitness for the grand finale. Sylt brings out the best and worst in people! Tough conditions with a very bumpy sea, a start line miles upwind and wind picking up. It turned out to be my worst racing result of the year and finished 8th place overall for the season. I made some wrong choices in the unpredictable wind and got stuck on too big a gear in the first round, sailing half the heat unhooked on my 8,4 and 81 wide board to avoid nose diving. The first reach was super broad and had to hang on for life. In the last race #4, afraid for making the same mistake I took 7,6 up to the start line. Now I was on too small gear.... Just had a bad day, but the sun was shining and the public entertained. So much for coming early to train for the event! The waves were a lot more exciting for me, ultimately finishing in 7th place. I don’t know how, but it could have something to do with the sweet Legends I’ve been riding;) I managed to send Philip Koster back to the beach, winner of Gran Canaria at the age of 15 and flavor of the year. The North Sea being my home advantage, I sailed a smart heat and was super stoked when my name was announced over the speakers: off to the next round!
my favourite month
In the double elimination I beat Boujama Guiloul, Jonas Ceballos and Marcilio Browne - all pretty much the hot shot young guns. As an old dog wave rider got to be pretty happy with that! I just lost to Klaas who was on fire this event. The conditions where cranking and I probably should’ve been on a 4,0. When Antoine is on a 4,0 and I’m on a 4,2 there’s something wrong...either he is underpowered or i am stacked!

It has been a busy month at the loft as we have jumped right in to race sail development. Throughout the season we have been getting reports from all the guys on our slalom and formula racing teams, giving us valuable feedback that helps us progress the performance of the sails even further. We combine the competing pros feed back with our own rigorous GPS based testing here on Maui as we continue our relentless quest for maximum speed and performance with good handling. A sail that is truly efficient is not only blazing fast throughout its wind range but also feels light and manageable in your hands, it should be stable but also able to “breathe” and respond to gusts. I think that these characteristics are something that attracts many sailors pro and recreational alike to our TR series race sails. This season we are working towards sails that will be faster, more stable and have a continuous, more progressive twist pattern that perfectly balances power with gust response.
race sails
Out on the water, the fall north swells have been arriving right from the start of the month. It’s still early in the season but we have already had several nice logo to mast high days with perfect side-offshore winds. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of lining up on a clean, steep wave face, seeing the late afternoon sun over the west Maui mountains and charging down the line.

Congratulations to Josh on his PWA #1 wave title! It was nice to get a Hookipa session sailing with him just before Sylt. Aloha, Artur Szpunar

I have to say...What a nice month for me !!! I went to the Formula Windsurfing World Championship in Santa Pola,Spain. The event was really good and very well organized. Also the conditions were great for us with wind everyday. In the end I finished ninth overall and this is my best result in a FW worlds. I’m happy. We had the opportunity to test one more time all of our sails in a strong fleet and they showed to be consistent and nothing happened during all the event. The TR-5 12.0 is a machine, very easy to sail, and super fast going downwind.

Now I’m back home in Fortaleza-Brasil. We had last weekend our third event of the local races. I won it again. This event is good training for the events that are coming next month in Brasil. We will have the International FW Grand-Prix in Ilha Bela, a beaultiful island on the coast of Sao Paulo. And then there will be the slalom nationals. I will do my best and hope to have good results. See you on the water, Gabriel

our work is to windsurf A good month for testing, sails, masts and stuff. We had really good conditions here on Maui for the month of September so it gave us a chance to continue work on the race sails for 2010 and start looking at wave sails again. We had some good early swells that got everyone excited on Maui who windsurf’s and surf’s. It’s always amazing how many people are at the beach all of a sudden when the swell comes up, good thing they have good bosses or maybe night time jobs, who knows but the you can’t beat the life style in Maui, especially in the Fall. We had the arrival of our 2010 wave sails and everyone who tried them are super stoked, we sold out of most sizes on Maui already. So now the challenge is going to be how to improve them, but it only takes a few small changes to improve a sail, so we will continue to gather feedback and look at design concepts over the next 3 months as we come into the wave season. On the multi-sport side of my life I ran my eighth marathon since 2006, it was the annual Maui Marathon, yep just got in my van at 4.30am and drove to the starting line at Kaahumanau shopping center for a 5.30am start. Headed off on the 26.2 mile journey to Whalers Village in Kaanapali, which took me 4 hours and 9 minutes. A really hot day and a very difficult last few miles, but that is why I like this stuff, it’s always different and a good learning experience. Aloha, Phil McGain

Last month i alluded to an announcement of something wonderful. Well it all came together and in a very good way. On September 2, we took possession of a fine older 42’ cruising cutter (a Westsail 42) built in 1974. Thanks to the generous help of my good friend, Fred Haywood, I was able to secure the deal and take all the rest of the necessary steps to have her ready for delivery to Maui. Five long days in the boatyard eating old bottom paint over Labor Day weekend and she was floating again all clean and ready to go. Now named "Cornelia", after my mom, she is on Maui and getting a regular evening visit to charge on with the necessary reconstruction. The previous owner, Dave Chandler, bought her three years ago and had ’the dream’. Sadly for him, and good for us, he had a family situation that required him to leave Hawaii and take up the management of a forty acre farm in Michigan. During his tenure with the boat he did lots of good work to the basic hull structure, deck, and diesel power systems. He was just getting into massive rebuilding of the interior when forced to stop.

Basically she is gutted to the hull and needs a new interior. This is fine with us and will allow a lot of latitude in designing simple solutions to the basic needs. I plan on lots of ways to use the regular supply of 100% carbon tubes that are no longer masts :), and to have things that are made from mesh and sewn canvas, rather than heavy house-like furniture. The list of stuff to do is daunting but all within my experience to handle easily. Soon we will be taking her to new locations around the islands for photoshooting and story telling.

She’s a big girl... 13’ wide and 33,000 pounds, but sailed remarkably well on the delivery to Maui from Oahu. We made the trip across the channel to the harbor on the backside of Lanai in exactly twelve hours, about eighty miles over the bottom, most of it close hauled in strong wind. I can tell you I had a big smile on my face when we made it all the way to Molokai without getting a big splash on deck. A good sign for future expectations.

For the moment she is safe in a slip, but with the current state of the Hawaii harbors and the scarcity of docking, we may be on a mooring, and not sleeping quite so soundly. I’m sure that there will soon be some real good ocean sailing times in our life again. No plans for leaving though. There’s way too much MauiSails left to accomplish and plenty of good cruising right here in the neighborhood. Aloha, Barry Spanier
My son Zeppo loves the sailing as much as I do
