The Rookie of the Year title has long been considered one of the most prestigious accolades to be awarded to aspiring windsurfers hoping to make their name on the professional windsurfing circuit. In the past years, the winners have included the likes of Philip Koster (Starboard / NeilPryde / Dakine), Alice Arutkin (Starboard / North) and Kai Lenny (Naish / Naish). Joining this distinguished list of athletes, it’s with great pleasure that we announce the 2010 Rookies of the Year as Jamie Hancock (Tabou / Vandal) and Xenia Kessler (JP / MauiSails). Following the announcement of their awards, PWA caught up with Xenia to get the low down on her first seasons on tour.

PWA: Xenia. Congratulations! What does being recognized as Rookie of the Year mean to you? XK: "Thank you very much! I am super happy and proud to receive this title! It means a lot to me. An appreciation like this makes me want to improve more, and obtain better results in 2011. It is very motivating! I look forward to competing on the PWA tour in 2011, and hopefully to see more women doing the same thing. " PWA: What was your highlight of the 2010 season? XK: "There has been a lot of good moments really. To finish top 5 on the PWA women’s freestyle world tour was for sure one of them. Also winning The Curacao Windsurf Challenge earlier this year was a great experience, and it was my first win on the international scene. But when I look back through 2010 there is a lot of nice memories; instructing on the JP Young Gun Camp, clinics in Denmark, training in the Canaries, training in Bonaire and a lot more. This was the year I got my first board sponsor as well, and my first ever new freestyle board. I’m still very thankful for that! Super sick! " PWA: Historically, winners of the PWA’s rookie of the year award have gone on to do big things later in their careers, do you think you will live up to the expectation? XK: "I hope so, and I am gonna do my best! For sure this gives an extra push, and also a bit of weight on the shoulders, but I like it. It motivates me a lot! "

PWA: What are your career ambitions in windsurfing? XK: "I like to push and challenge myself, and I would like to move further up the ranking on the World Tour. I take small steps, and work my way up. Also I don’t want to forget how I got to where I am, and I really want to keep doing clinics, presentations, camps and loads of free sailing with all the up and coming windsurfers at home and around in the world. I want more people to enjoy the sport of windsurfing as much as I do it myself. " PWA: What are the strongest and weakest aspects of your sailing? XK: "My strongest aspects are probably that I have a hard time giving up. I think that is important especially in freestyle. You have to really want it, and work hard, stay persistent. And I also like to just play on the water, and try new things, having fun with the surfers around me. My sailing style is pretty smooth but powerful when I am at my best. My weakest points are still my lack of real power moves, but I will keep on working on that." PWA: What aspects of the tour have you found most challenging? XK: "The first year I was a bit shy. I did not know the girls so well, and there was a lot of new impressions and also practical things to learn."

PWA: How will you be preparing for next year’s tour? XK: "I just came home from Tenerife, where I spend some weeks in December to get some wind and warmth. My favorite spots at home are all covered in ice, so it’s amazing to get to some warmer spots. Next up is Bonaire, where I like to be training in the winter. It looks like I will go to Vietnam first though – I’m super stoked that women’s freestyle in Vietnam is being confirmed! So cool! I really look forward to go. Big ups to PWA and the organizers in Vietnam about this! "

Yo yo yo Wassup my friends? December has been really bad on Bonaire, cold, a lot of rain and not as much wind. Before the rain clouds we had some 30 minutes of sailing but after it starts raining the wind dies completely, so this has been the forecast for the whole month of December. A small amount of sailing but it’s better then nothing right? 4.8 is what I have been sailing the most as the wind gets about 30 knots during the rain clouds. I have also started a small clothing company which is called YOUNG & TALENTED, we make stylish, bright, funky colors T’shirt. As i put enough energy in it I have sold about 130 pieces in just about 10 days. I am not trying to get really big. At the moment I just want to stick to a small amount and to make sure which whatever is made get sold out. It has been a great long year for me. I am really satisfied with my results and what all I have achieved in 2010. I will stick with my previous sponsors: STARBOARD, MAUISAILS, MAUI ULTRA FINS, MYSTIC clothing and Bonaire Windsurf Place. Yet again I find myself sitting in the middle row of an airplane, heading from Los Angeles on my way down to Los Barrilles, Baja, for the Lord of the Wind Showdown starting on the 12th of January. There’s been a lot of hype about the event, as it’s the first slalom/freestyle event with some prize money to hit North America in a long time! With big air Kiting, Stand Up races, bikini contests and more scheduled to go down, everyone is stoked for what’s to come! Ingrid and I started out our month in Maui still, and though the wind wasn’t quite as dependable, we still had some great days, and some awesome surf sessions! I headed back to Los Angeles to visit my parents and friends for the holidays, and my 25th birthday! For me, it was the first time that I’ve been able to spend more than 24 hours at home in awhile, and it was really nice to catch up with my family, and friends from high school and college. I also got a chance to catch up with some of the LA windsurfing crew, the Knights, Freemans, and Pighinis, and am definitely planning on getting back down to Lake Isabella, Cabrillo, and Leo Carrillo in the spring! I kept my fingers crossed for some winter clearing winds at C-Street up in Ventura, but unfortunately they did not deliver. As if the timing couldn’t be better around the start of 2011, I re-sorted a bunch of pictures from our travels over the last year that were on my computer. Looking through them reminded me of how privileged I feel to be a part of this windsurfing community, and the MauiSails family. More than the places we get to luckily spend our time at, it’s the people we meet along the way and experiences we share around windsurfing that makes it truly extraordinary. TR-7 done. Time for skiing
Having completed all the major TR-7 design work, the beginning of December saw us performing the final design detail check and preparing all the measurements and diagrams for PWA registration. With the TR-7 complete, tuned and ready to blow minds it was time for a little break. My wifey and I packed up the skis, board, boots and our 5 year old daughter and headed off to Utah for some snow time. Our luck could not have been better as almost immediately after our plane touched down a massive storm started rolling in. The next 5 days saw almost 6 feet of snow dumped on the Wasatch Mountains and we were fortunate enough to take full advantage of it. We dropped our daughter in ski school and promptly rallied to our favourite spot to score numerous fresh lines in epic pow. Skiing deep snow during a storm is a lot of fun as you never really feel bottom and with the low visibility and snow shooting up and over your shoulders sometimes it’s hard to tell where the ground ends and the sky begins. It was a great feeling to be able to rip up these perfect conditions with my wifey, Amanda who was charging the whole time.

After having our excitement in the mornings it was a lot of fun to ride the chair up with our daughter Maja and see her enthusiasm to take more and more runs. The only time she really got upset was when we didn’t let her go down the black diamonds. The first storm passed and left a few dry days over Christmas which was good for some rest and family time. Though we probably would have been satisfied with those first sessions, there were no complaints when another intense system moved in a few days before new years and dropped another 2.5 feet of snow. Coming home from vacation is always good when home is on Maui. We’re already on to the next task-2012 wave sails. Just need the wind to return. Aloha, Artur Szpunar

Slow down, it goes too December... gone already? What happened? The early part of the month simply careened along with the last of the testing and finalization of the bigger TR-7. The weather was totally cooperative and gave us some perfect days for checking the new protos against the old. Results were very satisfying, some even being confirmed by one-on-one open matching with a top local pro on his new gear. That test put the 11.0 easily even upwind and at advantage downwind. Switching out the rigs had the local pro much faster off the wind than with his own rig. Very encouraging that we improved the handling and control off the wind so much. The 10 and 12 have shown similar characteristics and recent testing in Australia by Steve Walsh has returned some excellent feedback. The TR-7 is definitely a new creature: shorter, wider, and nicely manageable. I’m hoping the Australian conditions will favor Peter’s using the 8.4 and 7.0 he has, so there can be more confirmation. So far, he has raced with 8.4 and had the best speeds on the course against a good group, including Chris Lockwood. After a final flurry in the last days before deadline, we did some sail measuring for registration. Much more complicated and detailed than last year. The rule compliance must have been weak because photos of details are now required, as well as accurate positioning of clew eyelets, tack pullies, etc. Maybe some of the fellas had some sketchy things going on around the cutout/clew thing. This year it will be much more difficult to come with something updated during the season. In addition, the registration date is moving up to October so basically development will start right after wave sails get solid. I like this schedule better because it puts race sail development, manufacture, and shipping into better timeline for the whole world. The rules say that sails will have to be available to all sailors in quantity by November, probably in reaction to one manufacturer registering two lines of sails but only supplying one of those to three riders. The Art left for a holiday well deserved, skiing with his family in Utah. Phil was gone to Oz, and I promised Mom I would be with her in her home for Christmas. And suddenly, the only stirring in the office was Caroline organizing the details for delivery of everything possible before Chinese New Year. Orders have been good and getting all the ducks in a row is always a challenge. Not to mention, no Christmas party :( In San Francisco I was able to meet up with a group of sailors at The Tipsy Pig. Royce, Tim, David, Steve, and Emily filled me in on what is going on in the Bay. Emily was leaving the next day for San Carlos, running from the big nasty cold storm that was coming to California, thinking about the swell she would get down there in the sun.

When I came back before New Years, I was able to complete a new awning. It’s sort of a development project, aimed at making the lightest and tightest thing possible. A new material normally used in commercial sun shades had replaced the nearly twice as heavy ’yacht’ material. It is measured and fit to be tight, with battens tensioned with the old windsurfing buckles and straps. Then after it fit so good, we went to a party at the residence home of my mother-in-law, Wanda. It was all folks over eighty, lots of horns and hats, a few bottles of champagne here and there, and celebration of the turn of the year at midnight... New York time :) (7:00 P.M. local time). By 7:30, they were all headed to bed, and we went back to Lahaina to bring in the year in our time. And the sailing on New Years Day was spectacular, big genoa, great wind direction for smooth water, and whales, whales, whales.
If the old adage holds true, that the first day sets the pace for the rest, MauiSails is on track for the best year ever. I offer many thanks to all who come here to follow our trek, and who use and enjoy what we create. Being able to survive and continue to have the freedom to dream the future is amazing to me sometimes. 2011 will be our year. Aloha Barry Spanier

Light wind December With another year winding down the winds lightened off here on Maui but overall we had a very good year at MauiSails. Business was up from 2009, quality of products was improving and customer satisfaction was up. Our flagship product in the TR7 just got finished for an early December production run in China. I got a final and very good test on the 12m as the wind lightened off so the timing was perfect. Art and Barry have done a fabulous job on the designs, it’s safe to say all the sizes have improved and we have done our very best again to product a race winning design.
I had a great trip to Western Australia completing my second Ironman triathlon in 12 hours, 6 minutes. While in WA I got some epic sailing in, doing some local racing on the Swan river and hanging with my buddy Mark De Friest at Rockingham (good times). Mark and I had a 25 knot day at Safety Bay and I completed a coast run back to Rockingham on a 5.9. On the way back to Maui, I stopped off in Honolulu to run my tenth marathon in 4 hours, 16 minutes.
