THE WAVES PICKED UP ON THE NORTH SHORE THIS DECEMBER The waves picked up on the North Shore this December, and with a few good days of wind as well it was a pretty awesome month! When the first swell hit the wind was no where to be found, which made for some insane days for surfing and SUP. After a few days of lull in the swell, conditions returned and we had a nice stretch of wind and waves to get some much needed wavesailing back in. The Hookipa parking lot filled up pretty fast each day as it seemed everyone was eager to get back on the water. Hookipa delivered, with head-logo high waves and 4.24.6 conditions that put smiles back on everyone’s faces. I hadn’t used my 4.2 Mutant since before the AWT/PWA contest, and I fell in love with it all over again. Looking forward to some windier days ahead this spring! Just before Christmas I headed back home to LA to spend the holidays with my family. 80 degrees and sunny, it was great to be back home and see my parents, reminisce about the great experiences of the year, and look forward to what’s to come in 2014! Wishing everyone a great 2014! Cya on the water, Casey Hauser US-634

GREAT WINDSURFING CONDI December started off good. Great windsurfing conditions and getting myself back in the gym is just a perfect combination. I seem to be very motivated and ready for the new season. I’ve been putting the LOCO PRO to the test, taking them into the waves to see how they feel while wave riding and they are not bad. I have been sailing so much, trying not to skip a day, but at times the wind was too light go out so I did spend 2-3 days not sailing. Those days not sailing I have been working at one of the windsurf schools repairing boards and just keeping myself busy. On the last week of the month there was a long distance race and I won this race by far, using my Starboard Isonic 110 with a Zfin 41,5 and a borrowed TR-8 8.4. Wind was 18-20 knots steady. I was a bit overpower but nothing that I can not handle :). On my Athlete page www.facebook.com/TatyNB9 I have been posting so much photo and freestyle video from December and you can always stay updated on my daily news. I had two good days wave sailing at RED SLAVE and it’s the best TWO days I have sailed this spot ever. Using my Loco Pro 4.8 and my small Starboard Flare freestyle board. Speechless. Christmass and NEW year was time to spend with family and as soon the year end I was straight back to the gym and windsurfing and motivation was ON. :) Happy new year to each of you. All the best Taty Frans NB-9 :)

COLD AND SNOW OF WINTER IN UTAH Well it is that time of year again, time to wind down from the season, take some time off sailing and get a little different aspect on life. This year I decided it was time to head back to the cold and snow of winter in Utah to spend some time with family and friends over the holidays. This would give me a break from Maui, which I know it is hard to believe but it is nice, especially to go to the cold and snow.
It turned out to be a great choice as I got to spend a ton of time with my family and some old friends. We had all kinds of fun in the snow sledding with the kids, shoveling the drive way and doing a few donuts in the car. There was also plenty of time to discover some new outdoor areas in Utah looking for ducks and geese with friends, my kids and my brother. I did a lot of hiking out in the snow checking out new spots, saw some amazing sunsets and sunrises. It was a really nice change to be back in the mountains and the cold. We also lucked out and had a beautiful yet cold white christmas with lots of presents. I think me and the family got mostly what we wanted but we didn’t ask for to much as we knew we didn’t want to take to much back on the plane to Maui. Our New Years eve was very mellow and was spent putting the finishing touches on our packing to fly out back to Maui on New Years Day. I was also feeling a bit under the weather after a long holiday season so me and the family had an early night. But it was going to be a great New Year since we were heading back to Maui.

New Years also means time to get back to the serious training and prep for the upcoming season and since it looks like we are going to have an early start to 2014 in Margarita it means some serious double time on getting all the new gear ready and the body back in form. After some cold weather though I am really looking forward to warming the body back up!!! Aloha Micah Buzianis

T LANES FOR NEW YEARS IN LENS OF JIMMY HEPP

January 2nd , 2014. I starting the day with my normal routine ..running, exercises and swimming, because I knew was a Kona day here on Maui…...which usually doesn’t t happen very often. As I drive around the corner near Lanes I could see perfect side off shore wind, waves head to over head high. “It was LANES". I went out with my Legend 4.5. Going out from Hookipa is weird on Kona winds…... the sun in your face, current is opposite of normal , everything feels twisted/backwards. I went out on a long port tack upwind, my projection was Mama’s Fish house.

I turned and started looking for my next wave, looking around 30-40 yards ahead, I couldn’t believe how far the wave was away from me. So I started, two-three-four bottom turns and top turns to adjust the target . it was a very long, smooth and glassy wave. Looking at the lip far down the line and gaining to super speed in the offshore winds, and hoping not to hit any angry chop on the way (there were none).. .. Now finally I’m ready to hit the lip…..guessing an average aerial around 10 feet ..and right then as I take off the gust of wind projected me way higher than I anticipated….”like an ELEVATOR” I went up and out, I was screaming with joy. "That’s LANES…..Long smooth powerful waves to fill your soul" Aloha Ferdinando Loffreda

COMING BACK HOME I took the beginning of December to put the pressure down after the contest and trip in Maui.. coming back home always feels peaceful at first. But then my friend, photographer Pierre Bouras arrived and he didn’t want to have peaceful time, he wanted to get some shots. At least we are really lucky with the wind in Guadeloupe this year, and since I came back from Maui it’s been windy almost every day. There is no real swell but the wind brings just enough waves to play around and make some pictures for the magazines articles.. By that time I was also pretty busy with the organization of the waves kids contest that I was promoting. It’s been the second year that I did that and this year the organization was way better because all my friends, family, and sponsors gave something or helped me somehow. I put one of my Mutant 4.2s as a demo so the kids could try it and compete with it. It was Sunday, December 29th, and we had great conditions and because everything was well organized everyone had a good time, I was also super happy to put smiles on the face of the 14 year old kid who won the 4,5 Legend that he really needed.

I think it’s good to think like this and help the youngest because one of them will probably become pro or help the windsurf too. And then like a normal guy I did Christmas and New Years eve with the family and I wish a happy new year to all the windsurfer on the planet. Camille Juban

THE ENDING OF A GREAT YEAR... December is always quiet and looking into the future. From what I see and hear from Art and some others, the good stuff is already in the pipeline for getting off the line quick and speeding into that first mark rounding. It’s my dream to see the TRX in the hands of many new and satisfied users. Anyone who misses out on Art’s drive for perfection will be sad for sure. And the new material is already getting to find its way into new wave sail designs, including some three batten experiments to maintain the trend flow. I guess soon enough we will be back to Tri-radial soft designs with head battens only. Done right there is no reason it can’t work quite well. It did thirty years ago :) Personally I am still Samantha’s right arm and have been so happy to see her push me aside and say "I can do it!". She is regaining the use of her hand, the grip is coming back, and the flex and extension is increasing with each exercise period period, at least three a day for an hour. There is still lots of pain for her, and definitely no sailing. I have been able to keep the grass from growing on the bottom of the boat though with a couple short sails that have happily included Art and his family. Even young Maja is getting comfortable on board and I feel she has the attitude to be a great sailor, no matter what part of the sport she might like to do. The whales are back and there are big numbers of them to watch out for when charging along with the big genoa doing seven knots. I’ve been going ’cover crazy’ after getting the dodger finished last month, and now there are a lot of new smooth waterproof protections all over. And the depth sounder is finally functioning after some challenging installation requirements. The thing was in a box for two years just because it was going to have to be in one of those locations in the boat that required some sort of strange under floor yoga to achieve, but in the end, it was less messy and difficult than I had imagined. Mom is doing just fine still, and made Christmas magic for all of us by getting out all her very old decorations, ornaments that were 75 years old, little figures of Santas and such all over the house, and a spirit of continuity that drove it all. She will be looking forward to her 99th birthday in some months, so I’m sure there will be some sort of great celebration to go with that. I’m looking forward to getting her out on ’her boat’ as soon as the weather is a bit better. The odd cold has really messed with what is normal around her. Happy New year to all. Aloha Barry Spanier

END OUR 2014 DEVELOPMENT CYCLE As we welcome 2014, we also end our 2014 development cycle and move on to 2015. The TR-X have started to show up at beaches world wide and the buzz is spreading about their exceptional speed and acceleration. It’s great to hear the excited feedback and makes us excited to see Micah and Taty unleash it on the PWA race circuit. After a busy year, it was great to get a little time off during the holidays and enjoy it with the family. The wind has been a bit light on Maui lately, but it’s been OK for taking our 8 year old daughter out for some windsurf practice. She’s currently all fired up on using a harness, insisting on it even when the wind is only 5 knots. Thanks to Barry, we also got the family out sailing on the boat, making use of the light conditions and checking out the marine life. The break was good for getting reenergized for some of the interesting projects that we have in store for 2015 wave sails. Some exciting new developments, some improving of existing models. Stay tuned for more insight over the coming months. Aloha, Artur Szpunar
