THIS YEAR WE ARE RELEASING ONE RACE SAIL DESIGN WITH TWO COLOR WAYS (ORANGE AND RED) Over the past year we have developed a light weight metalized scrim laminate which is to be used in the upper section of the leech. Further refinements to the upper twist and lower luff curve of the designs has increased performance and stability. Now you get one version and all the performance needed to win races.
ALSO NOTE TWO NEW SIZES 9.3 AND 7.7.

SEPTEMBER IN FRANCE

After my record in Peru and my third victory on the AWT, i went directly to Hossegor, in South West of France. In September, conditions are not good in Guadeloupe so i prefered to train my surf here, in the french surfers’ paradise. As everybody, once a year, i try to meet with my family, and it was the perfect occasion: my sister and my brother are not living far from there. My mother joined us and we could enjoy all together before everybody starts school or job. My little brother Tom is as addicted as me to windsurf and surf, so we shared some waves and were in the water from the early morning till the night. There is nothing better than practice his passion in family. What’s more, at the end of the month, there was the Quick Pro France, the french step of the WCT. I could surf with the best surfers in the world and take inspiration from them while watching on the beach. It’s interesting to see the difference between surf and windsurf in the reading of the wave. I really learnt from that. It was a great event where i met a lot of old friends, that was cool. I stay here until the 6th of october, before going back to Guadeloupe. Then, Maui ! I just got to know about the joined competition (AWT and PWA), and i’m already feeling so excited about it ! Soon will be out a video that i recorded with my new Go Pro Black edition, thanks to GoPro France. Meanwhile, here is some pictures of my month in Hossegor. See you soon ! Camille Juban

SEPTEMBER TO REMEMBER OR MAUI MONTHLY 101 Getting older is less fun than it might be thought to be, and living with my 98 year old mother gives me that lesson every day. The mind is willing but the body often has other ideas. In her case, she can fracture her bones doing laundry. In my case, it was time for a change. So I have effectively ’retired’ from MauiSails ... :) packing and shipping department and other small day-to-day things I have been doing for years. So if you liked the way your requests were treated, and how your orders were packed and handled, thanks for that. I will still be participating daily in the forum, and will be there for consultation with Art and Phil, and am happy to remain an interested and active shareholder. I’m sure the company will continue to deliver properly packaged goods and services without my aging spine in the picture. So ’retirement’ aside, I will be around for as long as possible.

Cornelia got another level of deck treatment finished and now needs only one more cabin top section to be prepped, painted, and www.RaptorDeck.com applied to get the major portion of the surfaces soft and safe. I have developed techniques using a clever dust capture shield hooked directly to a large shop vacuum, so the grinding is just noisy, not a big mess. When the last big cabin top area is finished, only the cockpit and the small stern cabin will need to be finished. What a pleasure to walk or sit on this giant SUY (standup yacht). It’s great to see the old girl coming back to wholeness after all these years of hard work. Art, his wife Amanda, and daughter Maja have shown great interest in the slow sailing as well, and Maja is a natural on the helm. She has great concentration and holds a good course now, even when heeling 15 or 20 degrees and charging along. Although she is now happily learning to windsurf, I encourage her to consider sit-down sailing for another side of the fun on water. And the time together is great for easy discussions about materials and shaping of the new sails. Not to mention some beer and pupus to finish the day. I consider this MauiMonthly issue 101... the first course in a new curriculum. See you around more. Aloha, Barry Spanier

MAUISAILS MASTS DEVELOPMENT Very important development has taken place in the masts. We have recognized some areas we could improve so we have initiated a change in the bend curve to be more in line with the industry standard. Now our masts are more constant curve instead of hardtop. And we have improved the strength of the bottom section of the mast by adding a Kevlar laminate to the outside layer. Overall we have a much more durable and better performing mast. HOW DOES THIS EFFECT MAUISAILS CUSTOMERS WITH PREVIOUS VERSION MASTS AND WANT TO USE THE TR-10? We have done extensive testing with both masts over the past 6 months and while the new mast is BETTER in performance and more durable the pre 2014 masts will work well in the TR-10. HOW DOES THE CHANGE OF MAST EFFECT OLDER SAIL DESIGNS, FOR EXAMPLE IF SOMEONE WANTS TO PUT THE NEW MAST INTO OLDER TR RACE DESIGNS? Again, we have tested these combinations and are happy to report the new mast will increase performance of previous versions of race sails. Furthermore, but not encouraged‌.. customers with other brand masts can now use them in the MauiSails TR-10 and have a very good match. Race masts are now called SRS Race 100-K and SRS Carbon 75-K TO SIMPLIFY OUR RDM WAVE MAST LINE WE ARE NOW OFFERING TWO DIFFERENT RDM MASTS BOTH WITH KEVLAR REINFORMENT IN THE LOWER SECTIONS. Katana Wave 100 RDM is the 100% carbon pure high performance and light weight wave mast. Used by the highest level of wave sailors looking for peak performance from their sails. Gladiator wave 75 URDM is our new BOMB proof RDM wave mast. Still a great match to our wave sails but built very strong and durable. Slightly narrower in diameter than the regular RDM, hence the name URDM, ultra reduced diameter mast. With a slight reduction in diameter we were able to increase the wall thickness and strength while still maintaining an accurate bend to match the MauiSails wave models. Again the wave mast are now a little more constant curve, less hard top than before and bringing them more in line with the industry standard.

SEPTEMBER HAS BEEN GOOD HOLLAND
September has been good competing in the PWA freestyle event in Holland DAM7 and even though it didn’t go as I planned and I finished 9th in freestyle. But that Loco pro 4.0 is so sweet in the strong conditions, like i said in that Loco pro statement… finally Art got me that perfect freestyle sail :). and we sure did bring a great freestyle sail for all levels. I could have done better but my last heat to get in the top 5 i start doubting too much and that made me lose.

HOME
Well so far the whole month has been good. Heading back to Bonaire after Holland got me the time I need to be more focused and to really see what I need to do to get better. Being back home for just 10 days was good. I used that time preciously to make all the changes i need to do get better for Sylt, even though it was a very short time but it’s a start.

SLALOM
I hopped on my slalom gears to get my TR9xt 7.0 and 7.6 tuned up and ready for the Sylt. Also after receiving some slalom fins from Zfin for my ISONIC 110 it was perfect timing to get all my gears tested and ready for Westerland Sylt. I felt good tuning up my gears as the perfect fin that I found made me just enjoy my 3 days slalom training. Mostly I train to keep the sailed locked in as much as possible, train my jibe to be as close to the mark as possible and stay with speed thru the jibe.

FREESTYLE
no.101. September ’13
This time I did something different as for freestyle. I spend 3 hours on my freestyle gears 2 hours in the morning, then drive back home watch the video that Kuma made me. Search TATY 2013 KUMA. This helps with finding the confidence and also to try to pose your body in different position to go higher or land perfect. Then in the afternoon back on the freestyle gears to try that. it worked actually :) Hope you all had a great summer and are ready for the winter time. All the best Taty Frans

LOTS OF TRAVELING AND LOTS OF DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES September was a fun but busy month, lots of traveling and lots of different activities. For the first part of the month I was still in Utah, after Turkey I went straight there and spent the first week hiking through the mountains. I was carrying a pretty heavy back pack and my bow and was searching for a nice buck to take. It was beautiful fall weather, a nice temperature and beautiful scenery with the fall colors starting to come out. I saw quite a few nice bucks but never close enough, always the story with bow hunting. In the middle of the month I went back to Maui to work on the new TR10’s and some new masts. I had some great conditions while I was there, I was able to sail all sail sizes from 6.3 to 9.2, great testing conditions and training conditions for Sylt. The new masts felt great on both the TR9’s and the new 10’s that I got to try. Not big changes just some subtle ones to help the performance and the longevity on the masts, definitely worth the changes and the work!! Same sort of goes for the new TR10 also, not big radical changes just some subtle ones. A few shaping and luff curve changes to accommodate the new masts but also some new materials to help the performance and feel. So far I think the whole package is going in the right direction, after Sylt I will be back in maui to help Art, Phil and Barry finish them off.

A good solid week of sailing and I was feeling good and ready to head back to Utah for a couple days and then off to Sylt and the final racing event of the year. Sylt is always a tough one because it is such a long event, 10 days, and racing is usually always on hold as we can get sent on the water at any moment. Even though waves and freestyle are the priority it rarely gets more than a couple good days for either of them and sometimes they don’t even get any days. But I am pretty used to it and I have a good routine set up to try and make things go as smoothly and easily as possible. I am hoping we do get some good racing conditions so I can finish off the season with a good result.

My trip over to Sylt ran into a snag in Chicago when my flight was delayed and then I was going to miss my flight to Hamburg and not make it until registration day. Luckily though the airline took care of me and redirected me so I arrived a few hours later into Hamburg and was still able to make it to Sylt that day. I did finally make it in time and the first few days have been off shore winds, tough racing with light and gusty winds. I didn’t start off horribly but not exactly what I was looking for, with a win in the losers final it could have been worse. The next two rounds didn’t go so well either, the off shore winds are very tough in Sylt. Strange chop, gusty winds and very hard to choose what sail sizes to take made it a bit of a crap shoot. A TRANSITION MONTH FOR CASEY
September was a bit of a transition month for me, wrapping up the summer season in the Gorge and getting ready to make my way back to Maui for the winter season. For the first part of the month we were welcomed with an indian summer in the gorge, with great weather and awesome conditions. To make it even more special, my parents came back up for the month and we had some fun sessions together at the hatchery before the weather took a drastic change as fall approached. Sunny 3.7-4.4 sessions were quickly replaced with watching radar maps to dodge an ever increasing amount of rain squalls for sessions, and had me quickly longing for the month to come to a close faster so I could make my way back to Maui and the warm waters that awaited! Packing up my stuff for the winter in Hood River, it was off to the airport with way to many oversized bags, containing everything I own, as usual, to make the journey back to Maui. Flying in over the north shore, I almost jumped out of my window seat as I saw a flurry of whitecaps and beautiful lines of swell reeling in along the coast. Met by my roommate at the airport, it was a mad dash to pack up the bags, drop them at our new house, and head down to hookipa to get on the water. Every year I’m lucky enough to come back, I always forget just how amazing it is to be on Maui and a part of the windsurfing mecca.

Skipping along the sand like a kid who just got let out of school for summer break, the warm water welcomes me back, and I feel right at home again. Though the locals, and myself, were a little disappointed at the lack of swell, it was only a minor letdown, as good wind and decent waves still provided great conditions to get on the water. Heading back to the loft, it was great to see the

MauiSails family again, and see all the development that has been going on over the last few months, great changes are coming- and the new TR-X’s look insane!!! I also was able to pick up my new quiver of 2014 Mutants, and they have been working great! So far I’ve been loving the 4.6 and 4.2, and can’t wait to get on my favorite size, the 3.8, on a windier day!

FALL CAME EARLY TO HOOD RIVER THIS YEAR We saw rain, colder weather and unreliable wind. Needless to say, not much time on the water. I did get a couple days on my legend 3.5, and one blasting day on my 2.9 at the hatchery, but September consisted mainly of time at the office, and mountain biking for me. I must say though that I had a blast getting back into freeriding this summer. Training for super D’s and enduro mountain biking the last few years, I hadn’t spent much time jumping my bike. But this month, we’ve shuttled a bunch up at post canyon and I had such a rush, going for bigger jumps and gaps almost every ride! With the AWT Aloha classic coming up at Hookipa at end of October, and talk of a PWA event there also, I decided I would head to Maui early this year. So I got my Hawaiian physical therapy license renewed, found work, and am excited to say that I am on the plane, on my way to the great waves of Hookipa as I am writing this newsletter! Maui, here I come!

THE MAN BEHIND TR-X
.48
no.101. September ’13
We have been putting the finishing touches on our 10th model of the TR series and it is without doubt out most devastatingly fast sail yet. We worked hard to bring all the elements together for the TR-X, refining shaping, developing new materials and improving masts.
One of the key elements to The TR-X has been a careful examination of skin tension throughout the sail body and mast sleeve. The resulting sail panel layouts are based on a composition of different films and laminates, each material located to optimize its properties for sail performance. Our custom, lightweight, metallic scrim laminate gives quicker response and a lighter, smoother feel in the leech’s twist zone. Monofilm in the forward and lower profile sections maintains a crisp, stable feel. A loadpath oriented seem provides a clean interface between the materials.

.49
Maui Monthly
The high tension areas of the sleeve as well as the batten pockets utilize ultra low stretch and light weight Technora tm scrim laminate, while the lower sleeve sections use more forgiving woven cloth for a super clean leading edge and smooth cam rotation. Sail body shaping has been refined, together with the new materials to provide a more stable profile and improved, progressive release throughout the leech. On the water, the sail feels amazingly balanced even in very gusty conditions, breathing and converting each gust into forward acceleration. We can’t wait to unleash the TR-X on the race course and devour the competition (thanks to our online friends for the nick name). We were stoked to have James and Olivier (OP) from Carbon Art visit us on Maui this past month as well. It was great to test out James latest boards and I’ve been having some great sessions on the Wave SC 78 thruster. Sailing this with my Mutants, I have a whole new desire to hurt the lip. Thanks to OP for helping us out with the TR-X photos as well. Aloha, Artur Szpunar
