ARAKAWA AND WHITE FIGHT A LAND WAR!

Business News story. That’s right–after all the political fighting and election campaigning and Supreme Court arguing, that’s what we get.

The thing’s been up and running since Oct. 15 (it was supposed to go live on Oct. 1) and, so far, less than 300 people across Hawaii have succeeded in using it to find health insurance. These numbers track nationally, with only about 106,000 Americans across the country able to purchase new insurance through Healthcare.gov, the federal government’s web portal that provides most people access to President Barack Obama’s beloved Obamacare (otherwise known as the Affordable Care Act or ACA).

“It didn’t have to be this way,” David Sirota said in Salon.com on Oct. 31. Leftleaning Sirota is proof that not all ACA opponents are Tea Party members.

“Back when Obamacare was being negotiated, Congress could have circum-

The ongoing war between Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa and the bulk of the Maui County Council really got heated today over a huge stretch of West Maui coast.

At issue is the Arakawa Administration’s proposed purchase of 186 acres of oceanfront property stretching from the Pali to Puamana that’s currently owned by the Makila Land Company (that would be Peter Martin, James Riley and Glenn Tremble). Doing so would protect this prime coastal land from further development. It could also, assuming sea levels in the future continue to rise, make it a great deal easier to move the highway inland.

Arakawa has been advocating both those things since his first administration.

Land acquisitions of this magnitude are tricky affairs under the best of conditions.

Add a heaping bowl of political animosity, and you’ve got the makings of a real tragedy.

Since the summer of 2012, Arakawa’s administration has been proposing to buy the land. According to information provided by the administration, Makila first offered to sell at $16 million. This Arakawa’s people found far too high, and they countered with $8.7 million. Makila apparently found this too low, and returned with a counter-counteroffer of $13 million–a price that comes from an appraisal conducted by certified appraiser Ted Yamamura. The administration also said that Makila wants the deal to go through

by Dec. 31–or the whole thing’s off.

But a sizeable chunk of the County Council–led by Mike White, who has squared off against Arakawa in the past over such controversies as the decision to demolish the old Wailuku Post Office–doesn’t accept the $13 million appraisal figure.

“The valuation is surprising when compared to an appraisal done on the same 214-acre parcel five years earlier by the same appraiser,” White wrote in an Oct. 27 Maui News op-ed piece. “The appraised market value in 2007 was $6.25–even though overall prices were 40 percent higher than today. Adjusted to today’s values, the price could be $4.2 million.”

White also questioned the Dec. 31 dead-

line. “Is the 90-day time frame part of a strategy to allow the clock to run on the council making an informed decision,” he asked in the op-ed piece. “Why? We should take the time and do everything possible to make sure we have the value right.”

In a new op-ed published in Nov. 15 Maui News–which is also the day the County Council took up the matter–Arakawa fired back, defending the $13 million appraisal and attacking White by name.

“For many residents, this area is priceless,” Arakawa wrote. “But White doesn’t think it is worth the $13 million price tag, and questions how the administration arrived at that figure.

In his mind, our negotiations were flawed.”

In his op-ed, Arakawa then laid out–with all the mind-numbing tedium that typically accompanies real estate negotiations–exactly how that $13 million purchase price came into being. In fact, Arakawa said the “spirited, and oftentimes heated” negotiations “ultimately saved the county about $5.5 million.”

As it turned out, White and five of his colleagues failed to find Arakawa’s defense compelling, and today they voted to call Makila’s bluff and ask for a new appraisal. Only Don Couch and Don Guzman voted against it (Riki Hokama took a pass on the matter).

For Irene Bowie, the executive director of Maui Tomorrow–which lives to see land parcels like these preserved from development–the fight has been troubling and demoralizing.

“It’s been a tough one,” she told me today by phone (she’s currently on the Mainland). “It’s really unfortunate that an

important conservation project has become a political football.”

As far as which side was right on the purchase price, Bowie couldn’t say, though she acknowledged that some members of her organization did feel that the $13 million price tag seemed “inflated.” That said, she also said preserving the land was extremely important.

Maui Tomorrow’s inability to arrive at a consensus on the land acquisition is understandable. White’s and Arakawa’s opeds notwithstanding, the bulk of the land deal negotiations remain secret–as is the case with most real estate transactions. But Bowie also pointed out an important fact about the land in question: it’s going away.

Sea levels are rising, which erodes the coast. We’re seeing this at Ukumehame, which has already seen recent realignment.

From the Pali to Puamana, Maui residents can see the worn concrete barriers and toppled trees that come with the climate change that’s altering our world.

Not web geniuses

Given such a reality, and a long-term view of land use, then both Arakawa’s and White’s proposed values are severely overstated and the county might consider just condemning the land. After all, what’s the value of a mansion built on land that’s dissolving away?

vented the private insurance industry by simply expanding Medicare to cover everybody,” he wrote. “Medicare isn’t perfect, of course, but it remains one of the most popular institutions in America because its single-payer model guarantees access to decent, cost-effective health care rather than just meager health insurance.

It also does a good job of preventing profit-taking middlemen from getting between patients and their physicians.”

Medicare (and the Veterans Health Administration) are both examples of single-payer healthcare. Congress and Obama ditched any discussion of that (the famed “public option”) years ago during ACA negotiations. Perhaps someday the big insurance company subsidy program known as the ACA will finally work as promised, but for now, we can only dream of what might have been had Washington not killed the Public Option in the crib. ■

portunity to use their skills as participants in Akaku Youth Media Exchange (AYME), taking their training to the next level.

Kat Tracy, Akaku’s Director of Education and YBEAM, said she saw a gap that needed to be filled in the training of the youth–they were lacking real work experiences. “After 20 plus years as a freelance producer, I recognize the value of putting one’s training to use in a real world environment,” Tracy said. “I remember reading an interview from Kevin Spacey where he talked about mentoring under Jack Lemmon and being told, ’When you reach the apex of your career it is incumbent for you to “send the elevator back down”.’ I feel I’m able to do that through our YBEAM and AYME initiatives.

I’m beyond stoked to offer the community a chance to support our youth producers and benefit as well! Win, win!”

AYME youth will be producing mobile field stories in their communities with professional mentoring – and they will be offered stipends for their work. The program is unique in that community partners who utilize youth talents by participating in the AYME will supply the stipend. That funding–which goes directly to the youth– matches Akaku’s stipend 50-50.

Akaku also will provide mentoring, equipment, transportation, administrative support and a meal to working youth producers assigned a story.

“This program will help Akaku realize its goal of finding employment in new media for our keiki while serving nonprofits and businesses at the same time,” says Jay April, CEO and President of Akaku.

YBEAM was spearheaded with a Federal BTOP grant designed to teach youth broadband principles through video production in an all mobile environment. Youth producers shoot, edit and distribute stories from the field. The stories ultimately end up on both the internet and Akaku cable channels. Both programs are supported by Akaku and grants from the Fred Baldwin

Foundation, the Atherton Foundation and the Bank of Hawaii Mike Lyons Maui Community Award. YBEAM is still offered free for youth ages 12-19 yrs.

MAUI DRIVE-IN NOW GONE Maui's only drive-in movie theater has officially closed. After operating for seven years, the permanent outdoor movie screen has been taken down.

The island's original drive-in theater, which closed in 1967, was recreated at UH Maui College with the help of filmmaker Ken Martinez Burgmaier.

But with new construction at the college now complete, it was time for the state’s largest screen to come down.

“We created some wonderful Saturday nights memories for our keiki at the Maui Drive-in Movie Theater that will last a lifetime,” Burgmaier said. “We brought it back to life and over 300 cars would attend each drive-in with live music, fundraisers for schools, non-profits and fun entertainment.”

Burgmaier first began the drivein theater idea on the grounds of the Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center in Makawao. But those events quickly outgrew the 60-car limit. So in 2005, he spearheaded a plan to build a large wooden panel between two 45-foot telephone poles at a soccer field on the west side of Maui Community College.

Hawaii’s keiki can win a trip to Japan by showing off their artistic skills in the 2014 Dream Car Art Contest. Students age 15 years and younger are invited to enter a drawing of “Your Dream Car” for the 2014 contest–hosted by Toyota Hawaii. One winner could score a trip to Japan to participate in the Toyota Motor Corporation world competition.

Each entry must follow a specific concept. This year’s concept vehicles must have an element that helps society live in harmony with the environment. Those entering the competition are encouraged to create a “dream car” with one of three themes: conservation/environmentally friendly vehicles; automobiles that promote world peace; or concept cars that encourage helping others.

“Last year we received more than 600 entries from local students, double from the previous year,” said Glenn Inouye, Senior Vice President for Toyota Hawaii. “This year, we hope to receive 1,000 entries. We invite all local keiki to share ideas about the future of transport by drawing their dream cars. We at Toyota believe in nurturing the creativity of the next generation of great inventors, thinkers and dreamers.”

In addition to a grand prize winner, finalists from Hawaii can win an iPad Mini or cash. As a new addition to this year’s competition, Toyota Hawaii will award five teachers throughout the state a $250 gift card for art materials and supplies.

Original, hand-drawn entries can be submitted to Toyota dealers statewide or mailed to Toyota Dream Car Art Contest, P.O. Box 2788, Honolulu, Hawaii 968032788. All entries must be received by Jan. 31, 2014. Entry forms and rules are available at all Toyota Hawaii Dealerships or online at ToyotaHawaii.com.

Additionally, all eligible artwork will be automatically entered into the People’s

Choice Competition where family, friends, and fans of the Toyota Hawaii Facebook page can vote for their favorite entries. Voting will be open between Feb. 17 and Mar. 9. Individuals are allowed to vote daily. The artwork with the most votes in each age category will be entered for final judging in the local competition.

The top winner in three age categories– under 8 years old; 8- to 11-year-olds and 12- to 15-year-olds–will receive an iPad Mini. Second and third place winners will each receive $100. The entrant with the most votes in each age category for the People’s Choice Contest will receive $100.

New this year is a teacher recognition award. During the contest period, each teacher who submits student artwork will be entered to win a $250 gift card for school/art supplies. One random winner will be selected from Maui, Kauai and the Big Island–and two from Oahu.

In March 2014, nine local finalists selected by the judging panel will be submitted to the world contest. If any of the Hawaii entries receive merits in the world contest, those students will enjoy an allexpenses-paid trip to Japan to participate in the final awards ceremony in August 2014. All students making it to the final awards will have a chance to meet Toyota Motor Corporation’s top executives in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture.

Artwork submitted by last year’s contest finalists will be on display at Kahala Mall from Nov. 25 to Dec. 23 and at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Academy Art Center at Linekona Jan. 1-30.

Downtown London residences are known to be staggeringly expensive, but media blogger Sam Cookney calculated in October just how much. Cookney said he can live in an upscale apartment in Barcelona, Spain, and commute almost every workday to London (700 miles away) for less money than a modest central London rental. (Sixteen commuter days over four weeks a month would run, in pound-dollar equivalents: $2,420 for a West Hampstead rental, $121 council tax, and $188 transit travel card, totaling $2,730.

Barcelona, in euro-dollar equivalents: $938 for a three-bedroom flat with three balconies near transit, no tax, $47 daily round-trip on Ryanair, $32 a day in airport transportation, totaling $2,202–a savings of $528 a month.)

Plus, he said, sunny Barcelona is on the Mediterranean. On the other hand, Cookney luckily can work on the plane, for each flight is two hours long.

Many parents long for armed protection for their kids at school, but a few parents at Entz Elementary in Mesa, Ariz., have the opposite concern–and demanded that local cop (and parent) Scott Urkov not wear his service weapon, or uniform, when he drops his child off in the morning. Lawyers for Radu Dogaru, who is on trial in Romania for stealing masterpieces last year from the Kunsthal museum in Rotterdam, Netherlands, said the heist was also the museum’s fault–for having such unimaginably lax security–and that if the museum did not admit that, Dogaru would sue. Museum officials said they had tracked some of the works to Dogaru’s mother, who is claiming ignorance, and the son’s lawyers hope to discount any insurance-company judgments against her by spreading the blame.

PEACE IN OUR TIME Perhaps thousands of Baghdad residents have been killed by bomb couriers who had passed through supposedly secure checkpoints that were “equipped” with useless ADE-651 bomb “detectors,” but the devices were surely to be history following the April fraud conviction of the British scam artist who made $75 million selling them. (American officials had warned Iraqis for years that the ADE-651 was basically a novelty golf-ball finder.) But despite the debunking evidence brought out at trial, Iraqi police continue to use them, according to an October dispatch in London’s The Independent, with the September death toll at nearly 1,000 from bombers who passed through checkpoints, past silent ADE-651s. Even Prime Minister al-Maliki vouches that the ADE works “up to 60 percent” of the time.

In September, San Diego Superior Court Judge Patricia Cookson, perhaps sensing an autumnal whiff of romance in the courthouse, agreed to perform the wedding ceremony, in her courtroom, of Mr. Danne Desbrow and his fiancee, Destiny–and even to serve the lucky couple homemade cake afterward. But Judge Cookson did all of this immediately after sentencing Desbrow to a 53-year-to-life term for first-degree murder and for threatening a witness.

DEAF TO THE WORLD The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has been delaying a decision for months about whether to punish the Apache ASL Trails housing complex in Tempe, Ariz., for the sin of renting 85 percent of its units to the hearing-impaired– for whom the facility was actually designed (equipped with comfort and safety features to serve the deaf). But HUD has threatened to withhold federal funding because Apache is suspected of illegally discriminating against the non-hearing-impaired (who under guidelines should, HUD believes, occupy three-fourths of Apache’s units). State officials and Arizona’s congressional delegation have voiced pride in Apache’s mission, but the HUD secretary’s indecisiveness has left Apache tenants in limbo, according to a September Arizona Republic report.

BAD TIMING This year, the Florida legislature passed the Timely Justice Act to cut short the legal dawdling that allows death row inmates to postpone their execution–sometimes for more than 25 years.

Among the first “victims” of the act was to be Marshall Gore, set to be executed in September for two 1988 murders. But his date was once again postponed–because Florida’s tough-on-crime attorney general had scheduled a re-election campaign fundraiser that conflicted with her presence at the execution. (Gore will instead die in January.)

MATCHED PAIR Prominent Los Angeles cosmetic surgeon David Matlock is himself a finely chiseled specimen of muscle and zero body fat, but he said that when patient “Veronica” came to him in 2007 for “vaginal rejuvenation” surgery, he instantly fell in love despite her somewhat-pudgy figure. Time Is Money Does new County Auditor Lance Taguchi have the time, resources and will to help the county in a meaningful way?

ne of the little observed results of the 2012 election on Maui was the decisive approval of a Charter Commission proposal calling for a County Auditor. While not the sexiest job around, a decisive majority of voters (54 percent to 29 percent) voted to bring Maui County into the 20th century and hire an independent auditor–a person whose sole job is to investigate county departments and make sure they’re working honestly and efficiently.

Of course, the election was more than a year ago, but the role of the County Auditor is still getting fleshed out. In July, the Maui County Council budgeted $900,000 for the office and voted unanimously to hire Lance Taguchi, a certified public accountant who most recently was working as Deputy County Clerk for Maui County. He’s also held worked as a legislative analyst with the County Council, an executive assistant at the Maui Mayor’s Office, field auditor with the State of Hawaii Department of Taxation and as an auditor with Deloitte, Haskins & Sells in Wailuku and with American Savings and Loan in Honolulu.

For a reporter like me, the notion of an official County Auditor looking at the things like the Maui County Police Department and Department of Liquor Control is just too delicious.

But though he’s been in office for four months now, Taguchi is still far from delivering his first report.

On Nov. 18, I sat down with Taguchi in his new Wailuku digs–a still mostly empty office filled with temporary furniture (including two folding plastic tables on loan from the County Clerk’s office)– and we talked story about his new role in the county, what’s expected of him and why his office seems to be moving so slowly.

Q: A:

What’s your criteria for conducting an audit?

We’ll look to other offices that are well established–the state auditor, city auditor and to a certain extent the legislative auditor on the Big Island.

They have helped a lot. For the first audits, a good start would be to look at third party auditor’s management letters. I have been in contact with Kobyashi, Kanetoku, Doi, Lum and Yasuda CPAs–an auditing firm in Honolulu–that’s audited the county.

I also used to be an analyst on the Budget and Finance Committee of the County Council. But keep in mind that my office is new.

We’ll get there. Audits take time. Investigations take time. A lot of people don’t understand that government is designed to be slow because of taxpayer money. I want to be able to do a good job–credibility is the key. Once you lose your credibility, it’s difficult to get it back.

What’s your staff situation so far?

Why did you want this job?

I hesitated at first. I have a young family–a seven-yearold and a nine-year-old. But I’d be starting a new office and would hopefully make some improvements in the county. Also the money–like I said, I have a young family.

Scott Kaneshina is my senior analyst. And I have an administration officer starting tomorrow. That will be it until the latter part of the year.

It’s challenging, but I kind of like it. I knew what I was getting into.

What sort of improvements do you mean?

First of all, this office is not responsible for implementing improvements in county government. We never implement recommendations–we only report them. But we can focus both the administration and the council on them. I don’t view this job as trying to come to an opinion as to who’s right, who’s wrong–we just bring out the facts. I think that’s pretty consistent with other auditor jobs.

Q: A: Q: A:

As I understand it, your office has to do a complete financial audit of the county–a Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) audit. How is that coming?

This office is not responsible for the audit–we con-

tacted with a third party agency to perform the audit. We have a RFP [Request for Proposals] out for the June 30, 2014 audit. We should get proposals in December.

Have you devised an Audit Plan to show what you’re going to look into?

For the first year, my understanding–from the Corporation Counsel’s office–is that I’m not required to do one. That being said, I’ve stated that I intend to have an audit plan for audits to be implemented by early January 2014. For 2015 audits, that will be transmitted in May or June 2014. It’s not required, but I thought I’d transmit it.

Q: A:

The county’s Cost of Government Commission has publicly advised you not to do an audit of the current mayoral administration’s decision to demolish the old Wailuku Post Office. They met on Nov. 15, and I guess they’ve sent you a letter saying as much. Have you made a decision on whether to audit that?

I haven’t received that letter yet. And I haven’t decided whether it will be included in the list of audits for either 2014 or 2015.

You’ve said that you’ll have an open door policy. Does that mean you’ll take suggestions for audits from the public?

We’ve had a few people stop by the office. My first response is, “have you spoken to the department?”

If you can’t get results there, you go higher. But when you come to my office, I don’t have the resources or authority to fix it. I can only investigate it and come to an independent analysis of what happened.

Q: A:

What sorts of audits will your office be doing? Strictly financial or will you also be looking at performance?

It’ll be a mix of both. The CAFR audit will always be done by a third party auditor. But we’ll do a mix of performance and compliance audits.

Will you be adopting any sorts of auditing standards?

I’m pretty sure I’ll adopt Yellow Book standards. They were adopted by all the other auditor offices in Hawaii.

People ask me why–the reason is so the reader can see the audit has been to a high standard. It also has a peer review process.

There will be times when the auditee refutes the audit. It’s important to have credibility. We have to stand on our documentation and our standards.

Q: A:

A few months ago you told the county Cost of Government Commission that you and your staff would be undergoing training. What sort of training?

The Association of Local Government Auditors has classes, training, seminars. It’s a requirement of Yellow Book. We’ll definitely be getting that training. It’s to ensure that when we do the first audit, we do it in the proper way.

See, my senior analyst and myself–we don’t have a background of doing Yellow Book audits. The County Council could have selected someone with lots of experience with Yellow Book audits, but who had no experience with this county. In the end, they decided to select me.

Q: A:

Let me ask you this: The County Council hired you, sets your budget, but you have the authority to audit any county department–including the Council. How do you maintain the independence required to do that?

It’s no different from any other auditor’s office. You also have to understand that the Charter sets this office up. I have a six-year term, and can only be removed for cause. The Council has two-year terms. That provides some insulation.

Second, if the office is doing a good job, regardless of what it finds, it will be difficult for them to cut the funding for the office because the public in general will get upset. It was the public’s wish that we establish this office. That’s my belief.

Q: A:

Over the last few months, the Cost of Government Commission has returned to this topic–even to the point of theorizing that maybe your office and theirs would merge.

The Cost of Government Commission is concerned about it, in their way. But the strength of this office is its independence. Anything that takes away from this office’s independence, I’m going to fight. The public will protect this office as long as I’m independent and doing a good job. ■

Check out Maui’s electronic music scene this Friday at Charley’s Charley’s with Sandwich Island Bass. He says America has been great but they need to turn up the bass. Vadim’s home base is in London but he won’t be stopping there long–he says he’ll spend the next few months touring Europe, Greece, Turkey and India.

While Maui may not be a hub of electronic music, it certainly is a nesting ground.

Vad, is on his last stop for his recent US tour. In the last 60 days, he’s been to 40 cities in 35 states. He’s been doing shows with the Polish Ambassador, and says nearly all of them were sold out.

“I haven’t eaten a thing since Portland yesterday,” Vadim jokes. “I have been everywhere in the last two months. Jackson Hole was beautiful, the Donner Pass is covered in graffiti. Thirty of the 40 shows were with Polish Ambassador in their onesies.”

roll–they don’t know what to do with a band with no guitar. I’m like, just turn up that bass!”

On Maui, the dance scene may not be as big as some of the mainland spots Vadim recently visited, but SIB says Jonathan Herman at Charley’s was one of the first to see potential. They say they will create a Tropical Bass Soiree this Friday night.

“I always play Reggae-influenced house– Troppy Step,” says Vadim. “Soulful with a bassline that makes the people move. I think people who live in the islands have a different taste [in music]. It’s more tropical.”

The guys throw out numbers like mathematicians of beats–108, 110 deep house, 90 to 110 and zouk bass. Everyone is publishing their music on Soundcloud.

“What’s Mumbaton?” I ask.

“Moombahton,” Castorina corrects me.

“It’s based on African folklore,” says

national clout with their sound, but getting venues to take notice is proving difficult.

“The problem is that we find the promoters that do shows on Oahu just won’t take a risk on local DJs,” says Quinsaat. “They want the international names that sell-out shows.”

In the not too distant past, electronic music was underground. EM followers had to hike out to distant cow pastures and crazy warehouse spaces, and venue shows were trite. But this Friday, you’ll only have to trek through the streets of Paia for a world-class lineup of DJs and dancing.

New Band Plays Old Bar The Kittinger Jump kicks off Sports Page’s new concert series

T

he dark and climate-controlled Sports Page has been a Kihei fixture on Game Day for years.

But when I got the call that they will soon start a concert series, I thought, more power to them, but where will they fit it in?

Turns out the bar is getting a minimakeover. A new stage is being built, complete with a new sound system and extra insulation, and they plan to pump it.

The Sports Page Concert Series is all about highlighting up and coming local rock artists, and they plan to put on shows about once a month or so with local bands you may not have heard of.

Their first band, The Kittinger Jump, is the perfect example. In fact, when manager Darren Sarno told me their name, I said “Who?” and asked him to spell the name.

Their name should be familiar–they were

the 2013 champs of the Battle of the Bands at the Hard Rock Cafe. They’re named after US Air Force Colonel Joe Kittinger, who set the world record for the longest free fall skydive in 1960, jumping from a highaltitude balloon more than 19 miles up into the stratosphere. Kittinger’s record remained

unbroken until 2012 when he helped Felix Baumgartner with his jump as part of Red Bull’s Stratos Project.

It seems only fitting that Red Bull is jumping on board this project, as well as Jagermeister and Jose Cuervo. Special guests at the show will include Black Ocean and DJ Carone. Presale tickets are available for $10 at the Sports Page, Aloha Discount Liquor in Kihei and Request Music in Wailuku.

To find out more about Kittinger Jump, I sat down with drummer Michael Russell.

MAUITIME: So who’s part of The Kittinger Jump?

MICHAEL RUSSELL: The Kittinger Jump is Chad Kaya (vocals, guitar), myself–Michael Russell (drums), Ryan Sawtell (bass) and Chris Sendrey (lead guitar). We consider ourselves a progressive rock band focused on writing original music that is melodic, yet heavy.

MR: As of yet we don’t have a Soundcloud account. We’re still waiting on our finished recordings. We do have our Facebook page though which you can access some of our music as well as some YouTube videos.

MT: Tell us about being a Battle of the Bands winner. How has winning affected you?

MR: Winning Battle of the Bands 2013 was such an honor for us.The competition was definitely nerve-wracking as it was our first

series. The Sports Page is gonna surprise a lot of people with the new venue set-up. Misha Vosburg and Darren Sarno at The Sports Page have really come up with some great ideas and it’s definitely gonna change the face for live music in South Maui.

MT: Tell us what the future has in store for The Kittinger Jump?

MR: Mid-December will be our first offisland show on Oahu for Underworld Events’

show ever. We had been writing and rehearsing heavily in the months prior to the competition.

In the end though, we walked away with a great learning experience as well as gained confidence in our band as a whole. Winning also helped us get a head start with our recordings (Ola Shaw, W.A.M. productions), as well as getting our name out on Maui.

MT: Since the win, you haven’t played a lot on Maui. What gives?

MR: We’ve been really focused on our recordings with Ola and working very hard on writing new material. As a band, we’re our toughest critics and from our past music experiences we all feel that taking our time and doing things right the first time is more important than our volumes of shows. Quality over quantity, if you will. The Sports Page Concert series will be our final show of 2013 on Maui, and we’re honored and excited to be chosen as the first band to kick off this

“Metal Fest” with “We came as Romans” and “Crown the Empire” at Hawaiian Brian’s, which should be a mental show. 2014 should be a busy year for us with many more shows on Maui as well as more recordings and hopefully a small Mainland tour.

MT: Describe your ultimate gig and show.

MR: I guess playing for as many of our friends, family, and fans as we could possibly fit in a room. In the end, that’s what it’s about.

This Weeks Picks THURSDAY, NOV. 21 W.S. MERWIN FILM PREVIEW – Here’s a special glimpse into the life and work of Pulitzer winning poet and environmental activist W.S. Merwin. The documentary Even Though the Whole World is Burning follows various events in Merwin’s life that lead him from one side of the country to the other. Before the film there will be a special reception that includes pupus, wine and an opportunity to visit with the Merwins and filmmakers, as well as a poem from John Burnham Schwartz and Hector Elizondo.

HEALTH FAIR FOR THE HOMELESS – Designed to help Maui’s homeless community, the 14th annual Health for Homeless Fair returns this Friday. The Salvation Army, University of Hawaii Maui College ADN Nursing Students and the Ho‘omoana Foundation are this year’s sponsors. Forty agencies and events will be there to provide health education, health screening and assistance for those in need. Game Changer ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ is way better than the first movie Hunger Games: Catching Fire

he new Hunger Games won me over immediately, with an opening that not only sets the scene but addresses a problem I had with the previous film. We begin with Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), survivor of the kill-or-be-killed “games,” hunting in the woods. She kills an animal with her bow and, for a moment, hallucinates that she’s killed a person instead.

It’s a shocking moment, one that quickly establishes the grim tone of the film, and directly suggests the psychological horror of a teen killing another teen for sport.

While it was a massively popular, hugely successful film, I really disliked the first installment. In addition to being flatly directed and dull, I found the premise distasteful. The concept of teens having to kill one another, in order to survive a futuristic sporting event, seemed tacky. Considering that the brilliant Japanese blockbuster Battle Royale had this same angle, but also applied biting satire, the adventures of Katniss came off as a rip-off.

Even worse, the PG-13 violence tried to soften the bloodshed by turning the camera away from it. In doing so, the movie was accessible, to the point where most teens were more taken by the love triangle and female empowerment than the halfhearted commentary on murdering your peers for sport. In the sequel, this mistake is corrected in the first scene, where Katniss is visibly haunted by her having to kill to survive. The story progresses so richly, I’ll avoid a tidy synopsis.

I mean no disrespect to Gary Ross, who made the first film and Pleasantville, but the former director of Seabiscuit was a poor choice. The follow-up is directed by Francis Lawrence, who made I Am Legend, and effectively draws emotionally charged performances, paces the film well and better combines live action with convincing CGI. It’s not merely a vast improvement on the original but a darker, bigger, better take on the concepts previously established.

This is a strange film for the holiday season, though its grim tale and exciting character dynamics should rivet those who liked the wobbly first installment. Less a watered down re-telling of Battle Royale

and more a parable on how social/political uprisings occur, this is a dour but never less than compelling portrait of a bleak future and the need for activism in the age of indifference. It may play even better for adults who fondly remember Logan’s Run than the young adult audience it seeks.

It’s too long, won’t make sense to newcomers and, as it was the first time out, the characters and the world they inhabit are thinly drawn to all but readers of the books.

Still, even though we sense there’s something missing, everything is presented with a clearer sense of purpose. Stanley Tucci’s Oompa-Loompa-meets-Richard-Simmons talk show host feels like a sharper spoof of TV personality insincerity than before. Effie is a still a Gaga-esque caricature played overboard by Elisabeth Banks but there’s now a sad desperation in view.

Returning stars Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are still excellent, as is Woody Harrelson and a touching Lenny Kravitz. Donald Sutherland’s first scene, a tense confrontation with Lawrence, is so good it gets his character and the movie off and running. Philip Seymour Hoffman, likewise, adds so much grit to his mysterious role. Only Liam Hemsworth is once again bland as the pretty boy suitor Katniss leaves in waiting.

Once the games of the title take place, there’s rich suspense and atmosphere (the film was shot in Georgia and Oahu). Instead of déjà vu, we’re seeing how good the first film should have been. This is edgy material with thoughtful subtext. Above all, it’s a great movie, worthy of the hype.

A franchise that looked DOA leaving the starting gate has been modified and nearly perfected the second time out. ■

On the one hand, when you finally do get a stinging slap in the face from an over-inflated emotional kickball, you’ll know you’ve finally met your match, for good or ill. On the other, the person with whom you’re exchanging volleys now could one day be your match (even if they’re not now), if you’d just ease up long enough for them to catch up. This week, try that.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) What do you want to do today? What about tomorrow, next week, and next year? If you’ve got it all planned out, you’re screwed. It’s good to have goals, and general directions in which to head. But if you tailor your future and try to control or conceive of every detail, you’re really just screwing yourself over. Why? Because the best things that are going to happen to you in the next year are those things you didn’t plan for—provided you allow them enough room to enter your life. Take those precautions this week. It’s a win-win: you’ll see a much better way to get along, and neither of you is likely to burn out or overdose for a long, long time.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Rams start life with so much flash and pizzazz it becomes your daily challenge to outdo yourself—until at some point you cross a line of karmic progression towards your astrological neighbors, the Taureans, where you understand the beauty of the spotlight, of presentation, but it’s no longer the be-all, end-all of your existence. From then on you devote your life to quality, not just glory. Jump the gun and hop forward a few steps in your own evolution this week.

Simply acknowledge the new habit you’d like to acquire or the old one you’d like to lose, then diligently practice that wish, whether it’s eating less junk food, going to the gym more often, or ditching your tobacco habit once and for all. If you start it this week, you have a better chance of your new way of life actually taking root and sticking with you than if you try it during any other week all year.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Ask for what you want this week. This is a habit you’ve been cultivating in general, and hopefully you’ve found that if you clearly articulate your dearest desires you’re much more likely to get them.

This week, particularly focus on your most important unmet need—this isn’t necessarily the most pressing one, just the one that matters the most in the long run. Then figure out what would satisfy it, and just flat-out request it, in simply the most lucid and honest words possible, even if it means taking out a personals ad, making a phone call to a neglected rich uncle, or confronting your boss.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Staying on top of the latest trend doesn’t interest you, generally. True, virtually every Leo has a phase (sometimes as short as a week or two, sometimes as long as a decade) where that’s important to them, but generally being au courant isn’t that high on your priority list. However, being stylish is a desire that never fades from the proud lion’s list of wishes. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Be a glutton for perspective. Seek out high places and other vantage points where you can see for long distances, catch glimpses of big pictures, and just generally view your life through a wider lens than you have in half a year or more. Don’t miss this window; if you achieve the whole-life panorama I’m wishing for you, it’s yours to refer to for months to come. If you don’t take the time to check it out now, you may not be able to find it again for the next month and a half, and you’ll also be missing out on all the good shit you could do with your expanded viewpoint during those six weeks.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) There’s a difference between knowledgeable wrongdoing and an unconscious mistake. Errors in judgment far worse than anything you’re capable of are generally more excusable because they’re done without the awareness of what’s so bad about them.
