SHOULDN’T WE GET A PIECE OF THAT PRIZE? An app allowing people to share calendars with friends and family won the top prize at the first ever Maui Startup Weekend, held May 16-18 at the Maui Research & Technology Park in Kihei.

The app, called TabTop, was the idea of two California residents visiting Maui for their vacation who said they read MauiTime’s May 15, 2014 story on the event and decided to sign up.

“TabTop was built from scratch during the weekend by Tam Thao Pham and Adam Tait, a couple on Maui for vacation from San Francisco, who just happened to see an article about Startup Weekend in MauiTime Weekly and decided to show up and register on the spot,” stated a May 21 Maui Startup Weekend press release.

Maui Startup Weekend is one of many such events held in cities and towns all over the world. All just 54 hours long, they allow programmers, engineers and just people with ideas to thrash out possible business opportunities. Maui’s version was organized by Arben Kryeziu, Bump Networks founder and co-founder of the mbloom startup incubator fund.

As a result of their win, TabTop now has the chance to raise up to $50,000 from investors registered on CrowdAlliance, “a web-based technology platform that enables accredited investors to view and subscribe to private investment offerings posted by issuers who seek funding for growth in their respective markets,” according to the company.

“In addition to the potential network benefits of platform membership, the TabTop.co will also receive technology services and transaction support to aid in their offering campaign that are typically beyond the bootstrapped budgets of lean startups, such as investor accreditation services, access to escrow services, as well as customizable data room and marketing/ communication functionality,” stated the Maui Startup Weekend press release.

Those units were among the most famous in the American order of battle during the war, partly because they were serving while their friends and families were imprisoned in stateside internment camps but also because the units were among the most decorated in U.S. history.

Even for those who pride themselves on historical knowledge, the exhibit is eye-opening. That the unit won so many decorations–while sustaining horrific casualties–is well known. Lesser known is the fact that Lieutenant (later U.S. Senator) Daniel Inouye couldn’t get a haircut after the war because of his race.

of importance to everyone who lives on and visits Maui. Written by anthropologist Carol A. MacLennan, Sovereign Sugar describes in fresh detail all the might sugar plantations’ environmental and socio-economic impacts on Hawaii over the last century.

Ah, sugar. Given the importance the industry had on the development of postContact Hawaii, it’s hard to believe Maui is the last remaining island with a working sugar plantation (that would be Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar, which employs 800 works and farms about 37,000 acres of sugar cane). But here more than any other island today, we can see the power of Big Sugar, even as it defends itself against charges of environmental pollution.

Sovereign Sugar is not the public relations history of sugar in the islands that comes from the big mills. Instead, the book offers real analysis from a researcher who’s spent decades here.

THINKING ABOUT VIOLENCE Spent Memorial Day weekend thinking of violence. Partly it was because of the horrific mass shootings in Santa Barbara (just a few blocks from my old college apartment) but it was because I appeared briefly on the Hawaii Public Radio show The Conversation to talk about my recent story “Transition Has Been Hell,” about the recent suicide of my friend Chris Atencio and the thousands of veterans who kill themselves every year–numbers far in excess of non-veterans, according to statistics released by the Veterans Administration in January.

My girlfriend and I also decided to visit the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center in Wailuku. It’s a tiny but compelling museum, full of haunting images and powerful sentiments. That’s because right now they’re showing Eric Saul’s Go For Broke exhibit, a collection of large photos showing the Japa-

it–The Hawaii Internees’ Story, which details the internment of Japanese Americans on Maui and throughout Hawaii–though as yet they don’t know when that might begin.

MAUI MATSURI FESTIVAL RESULTS The 14th annual Maui Matsuri festival, held May 10 at UH Maui College, celebrated Japanese culture with food, art, crafts, entertainment and several contests.

New this year was a kendama tournament sponsored by Kaleidoscope Maui.

Kendama, a super-popular traditional Japanese toy, was the center of a three-level competition. Bryson Caolle won first place in the beginner level-one category. Dasiah Campos took second place in the beginner category. In the intermediate level-two category, Aaron Casallo won first place and Michael Casallo came in second. Ken Vanhtha was the first place winner in the advanced levelthree category. The second place winner in the category was Earlie Marie Domingo.

The Maui Matsuri festival also hosted a noodle-eating contest. The winners in the 13th annual Sam Sato saimin contest were Tyler Orikasa, who took first place in the adult division; Barry Kurasaki, who came in second in that division; and Julius Orosco, third.

In the children’s division, Gabriel Salazar took the first place honor, Shanyce McAvoy was the second place winner and Kami Kutsunai was awarded the third place honor.

The winners in 10th annual Iwamoto Natto eating contest were Dean Tagalan, first place in the adult division; Darrell Kurosawa, second; and Jonathan Forte, third. In the children’s division, Devynn Kochi placed first; Gabriel Salazar came in second; and Jena Suzuki took home the third place award.

Ramon Coratibo was the big winner of the fifth annual hanafuda/sakura tournament.

Maui Matsuri also hosted a manga art contest. Erin Kobashigawa won first place in the third-fifth grade category. Josh Krueger was second in the category and Jaime Tirona came in third. In the sixth-eighth grade category, Allison Bacay took the first place honor; Frances Cabulisan, second; and Kiki Bekkum, third. The ninth-12th grade

to bring each match closer together, building upon lessons learned and experiences shared the previous week. The after-school mentoring programs help at-risk youth overcome challenges by placing positive role models in their lives. The programs also support each relationship to guarantee positive outcomes.

“We couldn’t be more appreciative of the generous gift from our friends at Walmart,” said JD Wyatt, Director at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui. “Walmart’s generosity will help ensure we maintain our high level of program quality and service to the children of Maui in need. Walmart recently gave Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui a $2,500 grant to support two local after-school mentoring programs at Kahului Elementary School and the Mentor Center. The grant, provided by the Walmart Foundation and Maui’s Walmart Store, supports Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii in counteracting the negative influences that at-risk youth face. The grant will also help Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mission to ensure that Maui’s keiki see a brighter future.

“We believe that your organization is doing important work to the communities you serve, and we are proud that we are able to support you in your efforts,” stated a Walmart Foundation press release.

Four members of the Paia Youth & Cultural Center received a combined $6,000 as recipients of the PYCC Campbell Scholarship Fund. The scholarship fund, which launched in 2005, is open to any active member of PYCC who is a high school senior, has a GED, or is in their first year of community college. To qualify, each candidate must submit an application and be personally interviewed.

This year, the center awarded Derrin Allan Kamanaokekai Johnson a $1,000 scholarship. Johnson is a 2012 graduate of King Kekaulike High School. He has been a member of the PYCC since he was eight years old. This is the second year that he has been awarded this scholarship.

Johnson has participated in every one of the PYCC’s programs. His first job was at the PYCC StoneWave Skate Park.

Among Johnson’s academic achievements is being the first of his siblings to graduate from high school. He is attending UHMC to pursue a degree in renewable resources or sustainable energy. His hobbies include playing basketball, playing the ‘ukulele, body boarding and skateboarding.

Itara Sved-Wood, who is in the culinary program at UH Maui College, won a $2,000 scholarship. Sved-Wood is passionate about cooking and pursuing her dreams. She intends to continue her education to achieve a master in culinary arts after she has achieved the associate degree in both culinary and baking.

Sved-Wood hopes to one day own a glutenfree, sugar-free, all-natural bakery on Maui.

Brennen Almeida, a 2014 graduate of King Kekaulike High School, won $2,000 from the scholarship fund. Almeida plans to attend UH Maui College next year. Almeida has been an active PYCC member for the past six years. He has participated in PYCC radio station, RadiOpio, the Hekili Multimedia Lab and the Paia Bay Café cooking program. His current academic interests are psychology and culinary arts.

Abigail (Abby) Robinson, who won $1,000, is the fourth recipient of the Campbell Scholarship Fund. Robinson has been an active member of PYCC since she was 10.

This past year she served as an intern and

helped run the PYCC drop-in program. She also created a fitness challenge for the youth members. Robinson plans to attend UH Maui College next year. Her scholastic interests include management, business and art.

Big Brothers Big Sisters’ School-Based Mentoring programs provide services to at-risk children and high-school mentors, who interact weekly in one hour structured sessions under the supervision of a Case Manager. Case Managers provide weekly activities designed

In April, Anton Purisima filed a claim in Federal District Court in New York City that the Lowering The Bar blog calculated was for the largest monetary demand ever made in a lawsuit–”$2,000 decillion” (or the number two followed by 36 zeroes, which of course is many times more money than exists on Earth). Purisima’s lawsuit names Au Bon Pain, Carepoint Health, Kmart, the New York City Transit Authority and LaGuardia Airport among the parties allegedly causing him so much distress (by fraud, civil rights violations and even “attempted murder”). Lowering The Bar also noted that “$2,000 decillion” could also have been accurately nominated as “$2 undecillion” or even “two octillion gigadollars.”

Calvin Rodriguez was arrested in Port St. Lucie, Florida, in May as the man who had been using a shaved key to steal a series of cars from parking lots. His spree came to an abrupt halt as he sped away from police in a stolen Honda Civic only to crash into a huge alligator in the road. And on May 1, a wildlife trapper called to Pine View School in Osprey, Florida, south of Sarasota, removed four alligators (one of which was eight feet long) from the campus while classes were in session (but without disruption).

During a regional session of Spain’s parliament in February, a photographer from the newspaper El Diario Montanes captured a shot of legislator Miguel Angel Revilla looking at a picture of a nude woman (in a magazine otherwise concealed inside a folder). He explained later that he was of course just reading the articles. And in May, U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia of Florida was captured on a C-SPAN camera during a House Judiciary Committee hearing casually eating his earwax. In the sequence, described on a Time magazine blog, he dug into his ear, inspected the results, placed them in mouth, then went “back for seconds.” Rep. Garcia explained later that he was actually dealing with a “hangnail.”

LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES In April, India’s Delhi High Court judges declined to halt the local government’s program of posting pictures of deities on the walls of buildings in order to discourage public urination (that surely no one would soil his lord). The plaintiffs pointed out that the campaign was so clearly ineffective that perhaps the deities’ images were even making the problem worse–that “evidence” so far shows that confronting the images might even compel some people to relieve the “pressure on the bladder.”

FINE POINTS IN THE LAW The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled in 2013 that it was not necessarily illegal for

teachers to send students sexually oriented text messages–that the state law banning the practice violated “free speech.” As a result, in February 2014, prosecutors in Tarrant County dropped their case against a junior-high teacher who had exchanged 688 text messages with a 13-year-old female student over a six-day period in 2012, on topics such as “sexual preferences and fantasies” and whether either of them ever walked naked around the house. The messages would be illegal, the Court had ruled, only if they led to a meeting or an offer of sex.

ANNOYING RULING Despite a 1971 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court declaring that governments could not punish people who are merely “annoying,” dozens of towns (according to a March Wall Street Journal report) continue to regard the behavior as criminal. The justices decided the word is too “vague” to give fair warning of which behaviors are illegal, but an Indiana deputy attorney general told the Journal that anyone with “ordinary intelligence” knows what is annoying. New York has such a law, as do Lawrence, Massachusetts, and Cumberland, Maryland–among the 5,000 mentions of forms of “to annoy” in a computer search of municipal ordinances. Britain’s House of Lords in January blocked a proposed anti-annoyance law.

IS THIS REALLY PUNISHMENT? Among the discretionary punishments authorized to Georgia judges is banishing an offender from the county in which he committed the crime. Complained driver Ricardo Riley (who as of February is barred from Walton County), “I didn’t commit no murder, I’m not a sex offender, I’m not a criminal. I just got a speeding ticket.” Judge Brad Brownlow, perhaps irritated at Riley’s request to reduce the original $250 fine, instead piled on punishments–including banishment. Walton County is just outside the Atlanta metro area, and Riley, from adjacent Gwinnett County, has friends and co-workers who live in Walton–but whom he can no longer visit.

LEAST COMPETENT ADVERTISING WRITER The Asia Pacific branch of the worldwide advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather finally apologized in May for a recent “Bounce Back” ad in India for Kurl-On mattresses (whose general theme proclaims mattresses so comfortable that users “bounce” up after landing on them). was out surfing at Ukumehame (Thousand Peaks), enjoying a quiet and peaceful morning riding waves. That is, until I heard an annoying buzzing coming from your low flying helicopter drone filming us surfers. It was downright creepy. Whether it was for commercial gain, or just to get some shots of your friends, it felt like an act of voyeurism. Cameras mounted on surf and stand up paddle boards are no problem, but your drone created a nuisance.

It could have hit and injured someone. A swat with my surfing paddle could have put a swift end to it. Something needs to be done before these things proliferate. A guy wanting to buzz a surf spot with a drone should need to get the permission of every surfer out there. And you did not have my permission. ■

hough the word “summer” doesn’t really mean a lot on an island where it’s warm and sunny most of the time and a huge segment of the population works year-round assisting other people on their vacations, we still have that old instinct from childhood to think of these coming months as meaning we can enjoy ourselves outdoors. You know, stuff

like riding bikes and skateboards.

Thinking back, it seems that we spent our whole summers as kids attached to some device with wheels. Riding just about any contraption can be enjoyable, but bikes and skateboards brought an additional ability to get somewhere without having to bum a ride off mom.

Overwhelmed with nostalgia, we set out to recapture some of that fun with this

year’s Summer Guide. Jen Russo has a story about how bikes aren’t just for tourists, while Anthony Pignataro wonders if the County is overreaching in its effort to regulate the bike tour industry. And Tim O’Connor took his kids to every skatepark on Maui, and somehow lived to tell the tale.

So get that bike and/or board out of your garage and get to it. Just remember to be safe.

Here’s our handy guide

M

aui barely registers on the map of cycling destinations. In fact, a recent Bike League report card ranked the state as 40th out of 50 in terms of biking policies, infrastructure and laws.Yet we have some of the world’s best scenery and weather–you could basically ride year-round on this island.

When it comes to Maui cycling, most people think of the bike down the volcano experience on Haleakala, but the island also has a robust bicycle community that includes road biking, mountain biking and BMX riding. Renting bikes, bike camps, guided tours, mountain trail riding and elite races like the Xterra or

not so sure you want to spearhead your own self-guided tour, Maui Cyclery books complete tours that include titanium bikes, all the calories you need on the ride, water bottles, garments and shoes. Tours start at $140.

“We take people out for three hours of peddling, about 3,000 feet of up and down climbing,” says Rob Anderson of Maui Cyclery. “That is our standard tour. We can also customize the ride if the client is not up for that. We can do a ride up Haleakala [but] we cannot take people into the national park. Ninety percent of the time people are using our bikes. It can be a lot of work and money to get bikes boxed up and

Cycle to the Sun are just a taste of some of the popular activities for adventure travelers.

Cycling isn’t part of the local culture like surfing, sailing or kiteboarding, so there is definitely less hype about the sport. But it’s an easy sport to engage in solo, with a group or as a couple.

Since the best place to learn about island biking is from a bike shop, I stopped by West Maui Cycles. There I spoke with Nathan Blades, one of Maui’s cycling enthusiasts (he’s depicted on this week’s cover). He gave me the skinny on padded shorts, jerseys and riding.

Blades says he rides at least every other day.

“Really what you want to do is be content longer on the bike,” he says. “The small seats on the road bikes gives less resistance to the legs and is made to fit your pelvis.You wouldn’t want a chunky seat like on a cruiser. So the padded shorts are a buffer for your bum, and you will get less fatigued while you ride. Same with the proper shoe. Clips are twice as good as regular shoes, so you can lift and push.”

Average rides take about three hours in length, and many start early in the morning to take advantage of cool temperatures. If you’re

The Maui Mountain Bike Coalition works hard on trail maintenance and tries to keep trail access a priority in Maui. Their website (mauimountainbike.org) has the best descriptions on the trails in the Kahakapao Recreation Area in Makawao and the Poli Poli region. Their Facebook page lists opportunities for trail clean-ups and trail weather checks.

For those who aren’t ready to strike out on the public trails, Bike Park Maui plans to open in June with an all-levels, family-friendly trail park with bikes to rent. They even equip as young as six, something the rental shops don’t do.

Blades says the community is diverse and because of that there’s no one organization on Maui for cycling. But a lot of the shops organize group rides or know of one you can get into if you’re interested. South Maui has a Wednesday morning cycle for speed demons, and everyone is welcome–”if you can keep up.”

Jaime Boote, West Maui Cycles’ owner. “We have them all listed on our web site. We will also be trying to make a few more. This month we are going to host the first ever women’s group ride starting from the store on May 29.”

Boote says his shop doesn’t host guided mountain biking tours because all legal trails are on state land and you need special commission permits. But he does direct customers to private guides if they’re interested. At Maui Cyclery, they have added cycling camps in the winters where visitors can get an immersive cycling experience.

They also organize the annual Cycle to the Sun– an uphill race from Paia to the Haleakala summit.

“We do cycling camps in December and February, and I can arrange private camps as well,” says Donnie Arnoult, Maui Cyclery’s owner.”I will also be doing an all-levels, just-for-fun ride from Ulupalakua Ranch in December. We will ride out toward Kanaio. At the end of the race, we will do lunch at the Ulupalakua Ranch Store.

We switch it up year to year. Sometimes it’s the pancake ride, and we go out of Kula and loop back to the Lodge for breakfast.”

Rules Of The Road The Maui County Council wants to make downhill bike tours safer, but will they overregulate the whole industry?

est Maui Cycles in Lahaina is like a lot of bike shops. It’s relatively small, offers a nice selection of road and mountain bikes for sale and has a maintenance and repair shop. It also rents bikes– even offers maps so visitors can find a few local sites and, more importantly, not get lost.

“I do not offer tours,” said owner James Boote. “Never have.”

But under proposed new regulations currently pending before a Maui County Council committee, West Maui Cycles’ rental of bikes may actually meet the definition of a “tour,” potentially forcing them to seek an annual permit and pay fees.

“We don’t have hundreds of people on our bikes every day going down the road,” Boote told me last week, adding that any additional permit and fee requirements would “significantly” impact his business. “I’m not feeling that it’s fair. And I’m not sure it’s fair for downhill companies, either. If you’re going to regulate, what about all the surf schools at Breakwall? Or the kayaks at Olowalu?”

The proposed rules have been under development in the county since 2007, when the state gave counties more regulatory authority, though Upcountry residents and activists–who’ve had to deal with multiple downhill bike tour groups descending Haleakala–have been calling for bike tour regulations for about 20 years.

“Over time there has been a proliferation of escorted bicycle tours and unescorted bicycle rental companies, along with a large growth in resident and tourist populations,” states a 2007 Kula Community Association (KCA) position statement on bike tour and rental safety.

The statement outlines 17 concerns, including “blockage of the road by tour vans,” “inexperience of some riders” and “lack of mandatory safety checks for all bicycles.”

A county study on bicycle tour safety in 2010 states that Haleakala downhill tours began in 1983. “At present there are seven companies, a relatively stable number that has not changed since the National Park Service decided to prohibit commercial bike tours

within Haleakala National Park [following three bike tour fatalities in 2007],” states the report. “These companies have experienced a relatively tumultuous period in the industry beginning with limited access to the national park and the ongoing economic recession.”

The proposed ordinance dealing with bicycle tours came up for discussion during the Mar. 17 meeting of the Maui County Council’s Infrastructure and Environmental Management Committee. The bill, nearly seven pages long, includes a host of changes to the industry. Among them:

• “No bicycle tours shall begin prior to 8:00 a.m. during weekdays.”

• “Bicycle tours may not pass through any areas in Makawao or Paia towns that are zoned business country town.”

• “To insure adequate spacing, bicycle tours shall wait at least ten minutes from the time another bicycle tour begins from the same area before beginning a bicycle tour.”

Of those, Phil Feliciano–owner of the downhill bike company Cruiser Phil’s–testified before the Infrastructure and Environmental Management Committee that, at least as far as he was concerned, “most” of the rules “seemed to be pretty good.” But he did point out that his company’s research showed that a 10-minute gap between groups was “excessive” and that a threeminute interval was perfectly acceptable.

The proposed ordinance also mandates that all companies show a safety video to riders before the tour starts. Most controversial of all, the new law defines a tour as “a group organized for the traveling from place to place for enjoyment, pleasure, or sightseeing, whether or not a guide is present during the tour.” It’s those last 10 words that concern shops like West Maui Cycles.

When asked about that tour definition at the Mar. 17 committee hearing, Corporation Counsel attorney Michael Hopper said, “I see no distinction” between groups that have guides and those that don’t. Feliciano also

said he was happy with the new tour definition, saying it creates an “even playing field.”

One thing missing from the proposed ordinance was any mention of adding pullouts to the roads used by downhill tour groups. Such pull-outs, longtime KCA activist Dick Mayer said at the Mar. 17 hearing, were “absolutely necessary” and “essential.”

Mayer said he “strongly supported” the bill, but also felt pull-outs–which he suggested could be funded through a new $3 registration fee–should run every two miles at least, and every mile if possible. Once the pullouts were built, Mayer added, the fee should go away. Bobbie Patnode, a KCA member who also testified in favor of the ordinance, told me last week that even without the pullouts, the bill was a huge step forward.

“The pullouts would be great, but let’s get as much as we can,” she said. “A lot can happen without the county spending a nickel.”

Feliciano agreed that pull-outs would help, but chafed at the idea of a new fee.

“The fee right now is $100 to get my bicycle tour permit,” Feliciano said. He added that the current one-time registration fee for each of his bikes is $15. When Councilman Don Couch asked him if tacking on an extra $3 to that bike registration fee was “excessive,” Feliciano said that, yes, “I would say it’s excessive.”

Of course, as with many new ordinances, the whole issue of enforcement is a giant question mark. In fact, during the Mar. 17 Infrastructure Committee hearing Maui PD Lt. Ricky Uedoi said the bill was “outside the scope of the police department.” When pressed for more on why the department was against enforcement, Uedoi backed off slightly.

“What we’re opposed to is enforcing the regulations as far as gaps [between tour groups] not being met–we won’t enforce that,” Uedoi said. “Anything dealing with safety, yes, the police will enforce that.”

Given the Maui PD’s complete lack of enthusiasm for enforcing the bill, the committee then turned to–wait for it–the county Department of Finance (because they issue company licenses). “We could write a letter,” Finance Department Deputy Director Mark Walker told the committee,” but we don’t have the staff.” When pressed, Walker said the department could get additional staff, and place them at the Haleakala crater at 7am.

Failing to come to any agreement on anything at the Mar. 17 hearing, Committee Chairwoman Elle Cochran adjourned to a future date, after the County Council finished its budget talks. At the end of the hearing, Cochrane asked if people like Patnode and Feliciano would get together in a kind of working group. Everyone agreed, but Patnode told me last week that nothing has yet happened.

What’s more, though the issue is the preeminent item on the committee’s “List of Matters,” which was published on May 7, the committee hasn’t yet placed it on a future agenda.

And that makes people like West Maui Cycles’ James Boote nervous.

Skating In The Sunshine A local family tours Maui’s skateparks

F

or my son Lewis’ sixth birthday, he asked for a “real skateboard.”

Mom had her reservations, but his involvement in tackle football and dirt bike racing seem to have softened her opposition to skateboarding (when he was three he rode with me on my down-hill longboard).

So when his birthday came, we fulfilled his wish. A full complement of pads, and a nice helmet also helped ease mom’s tensions.

But as many parents experience, Lewis’ siblings soon took notice. Just a month later, his sister Amber got her skateboard for Christmas. Soon after, Oscar got one, too.

I was also surprised to find that the drops my six-year-old made regularly were humbling me–so much so that I later purchased elbow pads. Still, the kids there were kind and supportive of one another, and just seemed to be out having some good, clean fun.

Our spring break camping trip to Hana included a few trips to the Hana skatepark.

Like Lahaina’s park, Hana’s skatepark was completed in 2012, and is a popular ad-

The County of Maui maintains all these skateparks, and one free event is held at each park throughout the year. Drinks, snacks and awards are provided for the participants of these events.

County officials, as well as the YMCA and The Boys and Girls Club of Maui, have at times managed the island’s skateparks here. They also managed to get ongoing maintenance of Maui’s skateparks as a line item in the county budget. While recent county budget cuts have defunded past skate programs, there is hope for the future. In fact, students at King Kekaulike are actively working to bring a skatepark to the Upcountry area.

I know that for many people, skateboarding remains a radical, counter-culture sport for hooligan, ne’er-do-well delinquents. It’s still banned from many public

Not happy with the idea of simply turning them loose in the streets with their new boards, my family began a tour of Maui skate parks. We started in Lahaina.

Built in 2012 out of concrete, the Lahaina skate park is one of the newest parks on Maui. It came after seven or so years of residents asking for a Westside park. It was finally completed thanks in large part to various members of the community, including Lahaina Skate Company owner Donovan McNabb and resident Pamela English, whose grant-writing raised a half a million dollars to complement the County of Maui’s funding.

As usual, it was a beautiful day when we arrived at the park. We spent hours there skating in the sunshine.

People of all ages were there, ranging from four to the mid-sixties. Everyone was kind to us. While Lewis tried his “tricks,” Amber negotiated the rolling slopes. I sat in the shade snapping pics until the kids were worn out. But they were hooked.

Our next skatepark was Kahului. The

The skate park was made possible through county funding, extensive public donation and cooperative efforts from the Hana community. Though currently very nice, the Hana skatepark is supposed to get an additional section sometime in the future.

There, my son made a new “best friend” out of a kid who was giving him pointers on dropping in. Not surprisingly, Lewis was seriously disappointed when it was finally time to go. Though the rest of us were starving, his new “best friend” was still skating. Still, it was time to go.

Next on our list was Paia’s skatepark.

This park is run by the Paia Youth Center and was the only one to charge for admission. The money collected helps support the center, so I had no problem contributing. There was also an uncle there monitoring the kids. He took time to help the keiki with pointers and offered encouragement and advice as they tried new maneuvers.

By now, our tour had just one stop left–Kihei. Located in Kalama Park, this

But the time we spent at the county’s skate parks has proven to be only positive for us. The parks are spaces of exercise, camaraderie and creative expression. The kids using them weren’t disrespectful, counter-culture skate punk delinquents– they were just finding their way through life and enjoying the freedom and creative expression that skateboarding and these skate parks allow them.

They were supportive and creative, often filming videos or snapping pictures of each other. We didn’t see them smoking (anything) or littering the area with foul language. And nearly every visit has proven that skateboarding still appeals to adults as much as kids.

When Does ‘A Million Ways To Die In The West Fail?’

When Seth MacFarlane first appears on screen A Million Ways To Die In The West ★★★★★ Rated R-13 / 116 Min.

I

t’s easy to pinpoint exactly when Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West stops working. It’s the moment, a few minutes in, when MacFarlane first appears as the hero of his own picture. While proving elsewhere to be a versatile comic force, with his ever-popular Family Guy on TV, the hit and miss but massively popular Ted and a CD of his crooning lounge favorites, MacFarlane doesn’t have what it takes to carry a movie. The man who gave us Baby Stewie is best behind the camera.

The plot is a series of predictable story threads from other, far superior westerns, given a sarcastic twist. MacFarlane might call his film “satirical,” but it’s not smart enough and its targets are too easy. The story: a kindhearted but inept sheep herder (that would be MacFarlane) loathes living in the bloodthirsty, trigger-happy west and has just been dumped

by his girlfriend. He rebounds by falling hard for a headstrong gunslinger (Charlize Theron), unaware that she’s married to a fearsome and very jealous outlaw (Liam Neeson).

MacFarlane has many scenes where he complains to the camera about all the human indignities of the wild west, scenes that come across like a stand-up comic working too hard to hold the room. The part was written for a Woody Allen type and MacFarlane should have sought Allen for the role or hired someone else. Theron is too good for this movie, though it’s refreshing to see her give a sunny, sweet comic turn after playing so many ice queens.

Neeson gives one of his few poor performances, never coming across as strongly as needed.

While Ted cleverly mimicked the format of a TV sitcom, this film attempts to copy the style of a grand, old-fashioned western.

A few scenes are framed nicely and evoke an affection for the genre but can’t elevate a comedy with so few laughs. Although the audience I saw this with was flush with fans of MacFarlane’s prior work, the theater was awfully quiet for most of the movie.

There’s only one sustained joke here: that living in the days of cowboys was a nightmare,

as lives were cut short on a daily, if not hourly, basis. The blend of anachronistic language, text-speak and vulgar language interspersed might have worked better on a Family Guy episode. After an energetic start, the movie runs out of steam. A long scene with MacFarlane wooing Theron brings the movie to a complete stop. It’s one of many scenes where the screenwriters (one of whom was MacFarlane) unwisely assumed audiences would be engaged in the movie’s by-the-numbers plot.

When even Neil Patrick Harris can’t breathe much life into this (unlike his knockout appearances in the similarly raunchy but preferable Harold and Kumar movies), you know something went wrong.

More than once, this approaches the surreal awfulness of Freddy Got Fingered or All About Steve. In addition to the limp musical number, a

foot-stomping ode to mustaches (which sounds funnier than it plays), there’s also a dream sequence that aims for Monty Python but plays like bad Cheech & Chong. Fans of Family Guy won’t be more forgiving, as that show offers more wit than anything here. A truly surprising cameo appearance helps a little and is the sole moment that will remind Family Guy fans of MacFarlane’s random film references.

As for comic shock value, the film includes a few jokes that are racist, mean-spirited and culturally insensitive. Too bad none of them are funny or even on hand long enough to count as more than desperate throwaways. John Landis’ Three Amigos! and Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles were the models for this movie; they remain such hilarious, superior works that you’re better off seeing them and skipping this wagon train of desperation altogether. ■
